A double Dutch weekend, rescued for some by the elegant brilliance of the Arsenal skipper, after Alex Ferguson had conspired to baffle us by attacking Liverpool with a blunt instrument. With such unpredictable madness afoot, even the brawn and bluster on sale in the Potteries is beginning to appeal…

The Player

The build-up to the weekend was dominated by talk of Robin Van Persie and merits of trading from Wayne Rooney to the Arsenal skipper. On Sunday, Van Persie’s performance compounded the misery of those who held firm on Rooney, only to see their man twiddling his medically enhanced fringe on the bench at Anfield.

The Dutchman’s one-man show in Arsenal’s stuttering 2-1 victory over Sunderland underlined his potential to rival Rooney and City’s Sergio Aguero for the Golden Boot, cementing a place in our Fantasy forward lines. The opening goal after less than 30 seconds hinted at an avalanche that never quite arrived; nevertheless Van Persie was unfortunate not to add to his tally with a turn and chip of Bergkamp-like brilliance – the Emirates woodwork denying him a coup de grâce. Van Persie had his match-defining moment, however, his beautifully flighted deadball effort instantly dismissed Seb Larsson’s own quality free-kick as inconsequential – Arsenal had their three points and Van Persie had delivered on his promise.

Having promoted him to the top of Watchlist last week, we were quick to push him above the Manchester duo for the next few gameweeks. Both Rooney and Aguero square up this weekend, whilst Van Persie has another Emirates encounter to size up. Stoke will likely provide a significant obstacle, but, on Sunday’s evidence, those who choose to ignore the Dutchman again will go into gameweek nine feeling ill at ease at the prospect of another rich return for the Arsenal maestro.

The Team

While City powered their way to the pinnacle and Newcastle defended their unbeaten record like their Geordie brethren protecting a pint, our vote goes to a team gradually emerging as a Fantasy force. Stoke’s 2-0 win over Fulham at the Britannia was never in doubt – they simply swamped their opponents with a relentless and powerful showing. Fulham we’re bullied; given no time to settle and produce the kind of cultured flourishes that had Neil Warnock spitting out excuses following his side’s 6-0 slaying at the Cottage.

Stoke were a monster. Tony Pulis’ rigidly regimented unit have now conceded just a single goal in four home matches, emphasising the value of their defensive assets. The flipside of this is that, in attacking terms, they continue to struggle with just 4 goals scored at the Britannia although, with Matt Etherington demonstrating intent with two assists and Jermaine Pennant remaining fit (for now) on the opposite flank, prospects may improve.

A trip to the Emirates next weekend will be a test of Stoke’s progress and Arsenal’s ability to play through the most muscular and stubborn of opponents. Following that however, Stoke have three home matches in four which promise to cement a placing in the top reaches of the table. Newcastle, QPR and Blackburn all visit the Britannia before the end of November and, with a trip to Bolton amongst that group, Pulis will have his sights set on four positive results to take them into December and the Christmas programme. Fantasy managers will surely be taking note and preparing for an acquisition.

The Talking Point

Alex Ferguson appears to be playing some kind of rotation roulette with Roberto Mancini. It’s as if they’re competing to see who can put together the most expensive bench lineup and still fetch the three points. While Sir Alex saw fit to omit Rooney, Nani and Anderson from his teamsheet for the clash with arch-rivals Liverpool, Mancini looked to better him by preserving the talents of David Silva, Samir Nasri and Edin Dzeko with Villa in town.

For Fantasy managers, this recent trend creates a nightmarish scenario. Clearly, around Champions League fixtures, we have to ready ourselves for this rest and rotation to continue, for millions of our Fantasy talent to go to waste or be limited to a 20-minute cameo.

Suddenly a decent bench who can actually contribute some points to our gameweek effort might be the way to go. It’s surely foolhardy to risk going into a gameweek without the likes of Silva and Nani and yet, if Ferguson and Mancini persist with their policy around crucial European fixtures, we have to presume that this weekend’s disappointment will kick us in the Balotellis again. We need to be ready for next time; time to shift Shane Ferguson perhaps? I know this bloke down at Wigan who’s good for a couple of points every week.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I think this FPL game needs over hauling up to date. All the PL teams play with large squads now and we have to hope we guess whos playing every week. This week we have to make do with massive rotation and players resting. Maybe we too can have squads and rules about how many start and the auto subs rule is modified? It’s gettign a bit silly now and doesn’t really represent the same game Mancini and Fergy play.
I really like Adam Johnson but I noticed a quote in the scout notes “Despite his undoubted talents, his manager’s rotation policy will always make Johnson too risky a Fantasy proposition- a price tag of 7.0 only compounds this frustration”.

That's why is the most interesting fantasy game. I had Silva captain, but I still find it interesting this way. Well Mancini said Silva can't play every game and we didn't listen. Our mistake

Think the game is well balanced as it is. The rotation we saw this week is unusual and goes to show that having a good bench is important. Avoiding players that are not 1st choice like Adam Johnson is common sense.

This is what makes the game so unpredictable and exciting. It's all about having the right player at the right time. I had a terrible few weeks where my rivals were constantly captaining Rooney, but now that rotation has started playing a part I'm starting to reel them back in.

This game is about minimising luck reliability, while maximising your point tally.

What this game needs is reinstatement of the bonus monkeys. Was more fun when Ferguson always got 3, and players like Kocielny and Evans did not have a chance in hell.

I'm not winging chaps, Just a view!
Pointing out that all the premier league teams have a squad.
We don't have a squad. I'm sure the game could become more modern and with the times somehow we could all have a squad with certain limitations like so many players under certain price, 5 uk players, minimum of 7 players who came through a clubs youth system etc.???
It would be very hard but I just feel the game has moved on so much in the last year or 3 that we are left behind. I mean we all want to have a chance to pick players like Adam Johnson, Park, Carroll etc.
We all have our favourite players. It means also so much to younger players who can't pick their stars for fear of them not playing every other game.

A question I'm sure that will be asked much over the course of this week; Petrov or Walters?
Currently favoring Petrov as I can play him this week and he doesn't have Europe to contend with and that .2 will come in handy at some point no doubt.

Tough choice for captain this week between RVP and Suarez.

RVP coming off the back of a good haul and with FKs and pens.. but Stoke a more robust opponent than Norwich.

    Anyone else got this dilemma?

Yeah, totally. I'm going for RVP as Suarez seems to be playing well but not scoring many points at the moment. RVP (c) seems to be less of a risk but you could be rewarded big time if Suarez paid off...

I have RVP (c) Suarez (vc) at the moment although it could change a few times before the deadline!

Talk to me about Nasri and Anderson people? I took a risk on Nas after hearing that Silva was going to be rested, and turns out Nasri didn't play at all despite Silva not starting. Anderson, i thought was good entry into ManU at the time.

So what should I do? My team is fresh off a WC, and I did well last week. I am tempted to bank a freebie this week. Team link is in user name, thoughts or comments much appreciated. It was difficult to strike a good balance what will me missing a lot of the early season price rises but i would be interested to hear if you guys think it needs urgent attention or not. Cheers.

As sorry, I should probably clarify. It was just rumours heard hear and from a Man C fan friend of mine. Nothing concrete, and I was in a rush. Nasri slotted in with 0.1m to spare and Silva would have meant more tweaking I didn't have the time for.

Looks good to me. We won't see that kind of rotation every week and Anderson has looked very good for United so far this season. Nasri seems less nailed on at City and might be a source of frustration throughout the season.

I'm actually considering Ramires, after having written him off as a bad fantasy option early season. He seems to like getting into goalscoring positions, á la Fat Frank.

Eg. GW 12 - Kompany has Newcastle at home, Shawcross has QPR at home..so intead of playing Simpson away to City/Enrique away to Chelsea (which is what id have to do with De Laet) I can play McAuley at home to Bolton..simple 🙂

Bad logic in my opinion, both teams have been wide open. In trying to adapt a style to face and beat that Spanish side they (Man U especially) have neglected the defensive side. Who's gonna stop him in that left corner when he has the ball on his feet? They don't have an athletic dispossesor like a Rafael? Give him 5 encounters and Jones or Smalling are coming out with a card.

I'm saving my tranny to see who plays for either side this tuesday/wednesday, could be worth it. I see both sides scoring 3 goals at least.

And it usually does. I can see Clichy having real problems with Nani. And I would rate Anderson as possibly dangerous as well. I have none of them. I'm so close to dealing Danny W, but that voicein my head says after CL things will be much clearer. Still mad didn't pull the AJ trigger last week, in the long run last season he clogged the pipes for me.

Sturridge-Adebayor-Suarez have been in good form lately and much cheaper..plus the fact we (Arsenal) have been less than impressive.
Sturridge has qpr ARS bla LIV WOL new - the only tough defensive fixture looks like Newcastle away
Adebayor has bla QPR ful AVL wba BOL - just as good a fixtures as RVP
Suarez has NOR wba SWA che MCL ful - obviously 3 brilliant fixtures, 1 decent fixture and then 2 very hard ones but no way would I sell him until after the Swansea game.

Charlie Adam for the next three weeks?

Can't afford Gerrard and I'm happy enough with my three strikers (RVP, Gabby and Ade) so don't want to get rid of one for Suarez.

Adam's one major plus for FPL was his set-pieces, which have now been nabbed by Gerrard. I wouldn't go near Adam to be honest.

Adam will still be on a lot of set pieces...it will be Suarez who loses them to Gerrard in the main. Adam will get most corners and loads of free kicks.

I am considering getting Adam in but is he at risk of being dropped now Gerrard is back?

Also is Downing doing anything? Has he been a threat?

Adam won't be dropped and I'm also considering him.

Downing has been poor in the last few games for Liverpool and I wouldn't touch him at the moment as he needs Carroll in the team to have any chance of repeating last season's efforts.

And yet when Kenny plays Carroll with him he fails miserably there too. Nothing resembling decent service to lush. I beginning to think he'd play better on the right side than he has on the left, couldn't be worse.

    How does this look?

    Krul (Vorm)
    RTaylor, Bosingwa, Enrique (NTaylor, DeLaet)
    Gerrard(c), Nani, Young, Silva (Dyer)
    Rooney (vc), Sturridge, Best

Not bad at all, though I'm sure a Newcastle fan like Attila would tell you that Best is a witches nipple away from being benched for Shola Ameobi (who is cheaper), so this is a tough week to take a punt on that striker line. A better cheap surety would be Johnson for Fulham, the little guy could snake bite Everton.

Sorry this isn't a dumb answer, I just thought "Petrov of Bolton" sounded funny

Disasterous week, but have 2 freebies this week, but not sure what to do.

    Given

    Bosingwa Simpson Mertesacker

    Nani Silva Jarvis Petrov

    Agbonlahor RVP Rooney

    Subs: Vorm Brown Delaat Ferguson

I want Liverpool coverage but reluctant to lose any of my strikers for Suarez so was thinking Enrique in for Mertesacker and Gerrard in for either Nani or Silva. .6 million in bank. Suggestions please

You have 4 mid-price options in midfield. I'd be inclined to downgrade one of them to N Dyer and try and get in another big hitter alongside Silva esp with £1.2m in the bank.

I could be wrong but I think Riise has been playing ahead of Briggs in the Prem so change him if possible.

Finally, Liverpool have 3 nice fixtures coming up. Get Enrique in for Cahill maybe?

    Should I do:
    A) RVP + Barton > Sturr + Mata = 4pt hit, 2.2 in the bank
    B) RVP + Barton > Sturr + Gerrard = 4pt hit 0.8 in the bank
    C) Do nothing, Save my transfer for GW10

    0.7 and 1 FT

    my front 8 are:
    Nasri Petrov Nani Ramsey (Barton)
    Suarez RVP Adebayor

Nani to Gerrard is affordable but then I wont have any united cover...will that be risky? considering United might score off a Nani assist or goal???
Gerrard is certain to contribute that's for sure. Maybe I could think of the direct transfer.
