Yesterday I saw Bony was at -61%

Thought I was cool, thought I could wait for AFTER tonight's games before taking him out... And then BAM! Price drop... How?!

Because the price prediction sites have little to no clue about the price change algorithm. Possibly because FPL changes it in the course of the season to fool us.

Possibly the latter because up until now, FPL statistics have been pretty accurate about price rises and drops

    THE VALUE OF STAYING AHEAD

I was wondering if we take are incredibly scared of taking the odd -8 a lot and maybe underplaying the value of staying ahead in the game.

2 transfers you make now also mean 2 transfers you don't have to make in the future. Now i don't recommend going batshit crazy and taking hits every week but an occasional -8 once in 2 months is kind of underrated around these parts. How do we account for the transfers we won't make in the future because we are playing the safer game now?

For example, like i mentioned on the previous page, this is my current dilemma and it got me thinking.

If i gamble on Kolarov starting this GW, i can field this team.

    Butland
    Rojo Bellerin Kolarov Alderwield
    KDB Sanchez Mane Deulofeu
    Vardy Lukaku

    McCarthy Bony Francis Westwood

Alternatively, i do Bony + Kolarov -> Aguero + Ward/Souare and be 2 transfers ahead.

Now let us say i play safe. I am most definitely going to remove Bony and Kolarov from my team next and get in Kun + a defender in the 4-5M bracket. To do Bony -> Kun i need a hit with a defensive upgrade irrespective. But not doing these moves this week also means i don't potentially do lets say a Mane -> Coutinho next week (Let us assume that Coutinho has scored again and now deserves a lot of our attention). Looking at these fixtures i am definitely considering Mane -> Cout next week but can't do it because i must cater to Bony + Kolarov first.

This circle then plays on further and further. My thinking then is if you are going to eventually make dead certain moves (Bony to Kun is a dead certain), are we underplaying staying ahead and having a healthy team so that you don't always have niggling issues to cater to and can jump on some steals?

How does one balance these out and what is your thinking?

I would do the moves once in while a -8 . Once in a while doesn't hurt if you are gonna setup team for a month or two. Do the moves.

      I agree with you.

If you're getting in a valid captaincy material (someone like Sanchez, Aguero, Hazard when in form), I think the hits would pay off long term, especially when you're getting rid of 2 players that you'd not want in your team because of injury/rotation. In this case, Bony's injured and Kolarov's going to be a rotation risk.

It's something I am trying to incorporate in my game this season. Change isn't an easy process though.

Yep, I agree with this entirely. Esp if you have a few players that need to be gotten rid of, take the hits early and all at once rather than waiting and losing ground. Just avoid making luxury transfers (even with a free) I reckon.

Mane-Coutinho is something you can afford to wait for though, IMO.

But you see people putting off transferring Payet out to save 4 points, for example. Ridiculous!

Mane to Coutinho was an example of a move i could not make next week if i did not take the double hit this week.

could wait a few weeks for, I should have said.

It's just not a wise transfer with Mane's known explosiveness and Coutinho's known tendency to have 1000 shots before eventually scoring. Mane-Ozil would make total sense this week IMO.

I personally don't see Aguero starting this week. Pellegrini has always been patient with him after injury. Let's hope we know more about it in the pressers.

If he does start, I think these transfers are definitely worth it.

I definitely agree LR. I appreciate the value of a good hit every now and again.

Problem I have is it gets addictive, and do take one too many. Half the time the pay of immediately that week in terms of points, but I've made some silly errors too.

      1. Super Tim Cahill
        • 10 Years

^ this is the problem with hits IMO. Thinking in terms of a one week payoff is all well and good when you want the guy in your team for the next month or two. But when its someone who you'll be looking to get rid of in 2 weeks, not so much.

Having said that last year I remember taking a hit for Calum Chambers (mainly to create funds for someone else) and having him score about 16 that gameweek....

But if you get a short term pay-off, and then sell him short term, great!

If you want him longer term, and there are value issues around you either signing him or his rising value stopping you buying another future target, then there's an argument that losing a few pointsof your -4 is not the end of the world.

This sort of agrees with my logic that EVERY transfer is worth 4 points. Free or not. It's the value that's been assigned by FPL possibly the only known known. (The assumption is based on the fact you will never let one go to waste)

I agree completely about taking a -8 for things you will definitely do later down the line. The cost is the same and assuming it makes the team stronger for the short term then it should be done with strength. Your example is probably one of these times with only he aguero minute time the debate.

It also allows the transfers you have later to be used on he certain issues that will arise like they always do after each gameweek.

This is a valid strategy and the most difficult one to pull off. Its predicting more than a GW ahead i would say. Its trying to hit the players that will hit form rather than in form at the moment if that makes sense. Not necessarily, but you catch my drift.

I would say it really depends what you are playing for meaning, OR - ML only - FIFFSA tourney - H2H only etc etc. So, it has a lot of variables. For example if someone is high in OR at the moment and is playing that game i would say this strategy is not needed, better to play safe and try and focus on captain picks. Setting up a team early like you said might be extremely beneficial if you get it right, but if not its a devastating. For example, you took -8 and got 3 players in on a punt, something stupid happens and they dont play. Means you are in a big hole. Something along those lines.

I personally think its a good way of thinking, but it all depends how and for what you play the game

      1. buffrey
        • 12 Years

I agree with this completely. It does very much depend on the type of game you're playing.

But I guess I'm the most basic of basic terms, hits should not be used for punts but only for mid-long term stategy.

(Caveat to that is the final weeks when chasing a mini league and punts might be needed)

I am thinking of giving him another week. The luxury of saving a FT and getting Aguero next week with minimal damage is tempting, also, there's the Ward-Kelly situation we aren't aware of, should know more this week.

Noooo...we plays Spurs after NOR...sell him at that point

You need 1.3m more to fund Costa > Aguero
Maybe , keep Williams this week ,and next week ,

I completely agree with you. KDB is playing great in an advanced position and looks a threat of scoring every game. Silva and Aguero back will only improve his output.

The only reason to get rid is if you're stuck with a low team value and can't downgrade anyone else to get Aguero, but surely that can wait til at least next week?

Also inconsistent, but could potentially do great against SUN & NEW in the next two games.

Or, as you say, go much cheaper (if you can afford them not to play this week) and upgrade Ayew next week.

Willian - best fixtures, worst team

Mané - Good player, good fixtures, inconsistent.

Eriksen - Differential, good fixtures, best player, inconsistent.

Soooo.... Probably one of the last two.

he looked like one of the only ones to do something in Chelsea. And i reckon they will bounce back now.

So I see Belgium v Spain has been called off. Obviously sad and not a good thing to have to happen, but the FPL consequences is good for the sizeable Belgian and Spanish contingents in our teams.

2 free transfers, 1.2 in the bank.

    Schmeichel
    Kolarov, Azpi, Francis
    Sanchez, KDB, Mane, Mahrez
    Lukaku, Pelle, Vardy

    Butland, Ayew, Dawson, Richards

Looking at just Francis to Souare and saving the other transfer. Any other suggestions?

I could also do Pelle to Kane or Mane to Ozil but thinking save?

I did Pelle + Yaya -> Ozil + Lukaku for a hit if that helps anything..

I think Ozil is making himself pretty "essential"

Yeah good fixtures as well, just not sure if anyone is worth getting rid of this week in my midefield. They all have decent fixtures themselves

Yep you should probably look to upgrade one of Francis / Dawson / Richards alright.

Not too pushed on Ayew either but he's not a huge priority.

I only have 6.0 to spend on a 4mid if I plan to.bring in Kun.

Tempted to do Payet to Silva and Martial to Lukaku.
