After picking up just three points in the opening eight league matches under Dick Advocaat, it was no real surprise to see Sunderland part company with the Dutchman last month. Given that new manager Sam Allardyce has never been relegated from the Premier League, the Wearsiders will be optimistic of yet another great escape, though so far, the jury is out on Big Sam’s start at the Stadium of Light.

Although the former West Ham boss registered a first win and clean sheet of the campaign – courtesy of a 3-0 victory over neighbours Newcastle – their 6-2 thumping at Goodison in the following league fixture brought them firmly back down to earth.

With three losses in his first four fixtures at the helm, then, we assess Allardyce’s impact on Sunderland as they look to build momentum and claw their way out of the bottom three.

However, one of the things that make him very special, like my little hammer, are his pass completion rates. This more or less guarantees that he will have other "purple patches".

Active it after the gameweek starts, then use something like fplstatistics to buy the players who are going up. You'll be on the lookout for potential double risers/people that you plan to have in your team.

    Bottomed :
Hi Guys, aware that this is very random but would really appreciate your thoughts.
I am in my first year at uni at the moment (20 years old) and at present am making my CV so that I can apply for some internships with investment banks.
Over the last few years I have won various fantasy games run by the telegraph, fantasy league and even Wimbledon and as a result have made about 2k and won some nice prizes.
Is this something worth including in my CV?

I feel it could go one of two ways:
    1) They really don't like the sound of it, don't like the link to gambling
    2) They like the fact that I am good with statistics, have analytical skills blah blah blah.

I wouldn't count it out completely. You might not need to leave the money part out but mentioning analysis and statistics if relevant isn't necessarily a bad thing.

I have a friend who mentioned raiding in World of Warcraft for an example of team work and for my last job application I mentioned FFS 😀

Really, really depends on the position you're applying to.

(also, word of advice, try to tailor your CV to each job you apply for if possible)

In general though, I'd avoid putting fpl in it.

Would definitely agree with the first 2 points here. Tailoring your CV for each job application takes time but is WELL worth it. It stands out so much more than when you create one CV which can be generally used for any job.

And yeah - including fantasy games will depend on the position.

No i would avoid, it has nothing to do with the job and it will be classed as a hobby, just like saying you have won many games in Fifa on the Xbox. It is unappropriate in my opinion. The CV should demonstrate only the best attributes you have as IB is very very competitive.

Would somebody applying from Oxford or Cambridge include Fantasy Football on their CV? because that's who you will be competing with. Good luck anyway.

It does depend on the job you are applying for but I have somebody in the family working at Citi Bank VP level as a recuriter also. If i presented him a CV saying I had fantasy football expertise and won prizes, it would brutally honestly be thrown in the bin.

When you asses the calibre of students that apply from Cambridge,Oxford,Imperial,UCL (and other red bricks) these small details really matter a lot.

The only place I would ever consider including Fantasy Football info was if I was trying to get a job working on a website such as this.

Even for these roles, the term statistical and analystical takes a different meaning in the finance district. It doesnt liken itself to fantasy football, pokemon, world of warcraft etc. Its a harsh truth mate, but better to understand it now and avoid problems later on when you are thinking why HR didnt take your application further.

It's important to have a 'skills and activities' section of you CV, particularly if you're a student. If you don't have a lot of other things to put in there then I definitely would. It shows good analytical skills (which for investment banking is massively relevant).

I've recently done an internship and been offered a grad job for when I finish my final year, and they were genuinely more interested in what you do outside of your studies - although I'm not sure I could comment on investment banking.

      Good luck!

Leave it for the interview, would be a funny example of analytical skills to cool the air. In the CV they will be looking for STAR (Situation, Task, Action , Result) for each of the core competencies they are looking for.

You can/should mention it but state them as tournaments that you've won and earned prizes from but don't mention any money. Of course emphasize that winning involved the use of data analysis, statistics, etc. And don't make it seem like you spend all your spare time on ff

Step back guys, I'm a recruiter for investment banks, I've got this covered...

There's nothing wrong with including it under hobbies, but I wouldn't exactly make it a focus. I wouldn't mention the money aspect, but it could be good to mention as a link to statistics as you say.

Also, if you drop me an email at johnoconnor91@hotmail.co.uk, I will reply with my work email and you can send me your CV. We don't generally work with internship roles, but I can see if I know anyone in the industry who would be able to help. Do you know any specifics on what kind of area of a bank you would want to work in? Would you be looking in London?

I have to go off for a lecture in a bit but I will drop you an email this evening with my CV and the answers to your questions.

No worries 🙂 I can't promise I'll know anyone, but one of our company directors worked in the City in investment banks for 20 years, and the other has been in recruitment in the City for 25-30 years, so hopefully they'll know someone who can help!

I won't mention how I got your CV...

Have to say I am amazed by the response, shows what a fantastic community this is!
Judging by these responses, I am thinking I shouldn't include it.
However, if my CV passes the test there will usually be phone/video interviews which as some of you have said may be a time to mention it if it is appropriate.

Probably not appropriate. Most interviewers probably dont have a great sense of humor.

I remember 20 odd years ago at one of my first interviews, the chap asked me what is 'yield to maturity' (financial/accounting term). Anyway my mind went blank, so i tried to be humorous and replied ' thats when you give way to senior citizens'. Needless to say i didnt get that job.

20 years later and im on the other side interviewing candidates, and from this sides perspective, definitely would think such a cv stating that 'good at fantasy games' would be a negative for me.

        Just my 2 cents worth

Thanks for the response, I am thinking that if I did include it, the wording would be exceptionally important. I effectively funded travelling on my gap year from the money I made from it which maybe would be something more appropriate.

Amazing that Sanchez is in the top 5 (or higher) for both the assist potential AND the goal potential charts, even when playing "tired", and people are considering switching him out for Ozil who is only top of the assists chart, which are worth less points.

Here it is in an equation:

Potential - tiredness - international 180 minutes halfway across the world - no results last three games - his high price factor = maybe I should get him out for Ozil.

I have both though, so I'm not exactly advocating getting him out, especially given the upcoming fixtures.

That's fair and could well mean Ozil is a better pick for this week, but for Sanchez is a season keeper unless he's actually injured.

KdB looks pretty well set for returns all season too so it may come down to:

Partially agree since I did see him as a season keeper at 10m. I missed that train and don't want to pay 10.8m especially with Silva coming back in for cheaper. He's yet to show his worth but I think he is capable

this is why I want to keep him

                  680 minutes
                  3 goals
                  4 assists
24 chances created (translates to one every 28 minutes)

Played with Silva only once (scored 15 points).
Played with Aguero only 4 times (averaged 8.75 points).

if you have him, it's a tough call

given his current fixtures and the fact that when Kun is back he's not a captaincy option IMO I'll pass.

I have both, but Ozil is 2m less than KDB and for less than 10.0 I don't necessarily need a (c) option

I plan to sell Ozil to fund Kun.

it would be nice to have KDB and Kun and I can understand a desire to keep him and have both but I'd rather KDB than Sanchez, for nearly 11.0 of my budget I want a player I will captain.

        I have both

I have said all through this break that I think selling Sanchez for Ozil is a mistake. I do believe that, regardless of this fatigue stuff, Giroud is the key, he is much less mobile than Theo and tends to occupy the space that Sanchez like to drift into

Is it worth is to do Cedric > Bertrand? I know it's a bit sideways but Berty seems more nailed on and likely to get assists too. It, it's for a hit.
I got burned pretty bad when Cedric was dropped for the last game.

      @Doos,

Didn't mean to sound like I was bashing your little hammer as an option the other day, I've looked into his stats and he looks like a great player, and I would probably go for him over Bolasie / Deulofeu regardless of his harder fixtures..

My point was just that I don't think he's quite at Payet's level yet, he just doesn't have the experience, though he may be in the future.

Same way I'm not at my line manager's level yet, but give it a few years and.......

His pass completion is immense alright, if he can keep that up after being pushed forward into Payet's position then I'll be eating ALL of my words..

OR, he could turn into a Cazorla without pens.

Afternoon all. SO glad to be getting back to business this weekend. Best of luck to you all.

Given the uncertainty of Vardy and the fact I'm on a WC, I may just look to move on from him this week. How does this WC team look then?

      DDG, Hennessey
      Bellerin, Rojo, Dann, Moreno, Bennett
      KDB, Ozil, Mahrez, Deulofeu, Lanzini
      Kun, Kane, Lukaku

      0.7ITB

I could also stick with Vardy for now and have Sanchez or any othe rmid instead of Lanzini. Then come GW 14 or 15 (assuming Kun is fit and firing), do a double transfer to get the team above.

      Thoughts?

I like him as well, but the injury he has could be something that lingers for awhile, and their fixture list also gets tougher.

WOuld you do a front line of Kun, Vardy and Lukaku (no Kane) with a stronger midfield?

Agreed, he's a punt, but he's the 5th mid in my equation and I can easily downgrade him to a 4.5 to upgrade KDB->Sanchez.

I go back and forth on either KDB or Sanchez now. Sticking with KDB for now given Sanchez current form and want to see how City play with all their playmakers on the picth now.

If I were wildcarding I'd rather bring in Kun now as you get to save that ft to use on issues that will surely pop up. No Vardy is a bit risky
Are you set on ddg? A cheaper gk could free up some cash for you if you want to keep Lanzini as a 5th and do kdb to Sanchez. Any consideration given to Silva?

Good choice on the PS4 though. If you're into RPG/action games, pick up Fallout 4. Only had it a week and I've already sunk 20hrs into it (even if it is pretty much identical to Fallout 3).

      A) Pelle to Lukaku (was planning to next week, but can't afford if Lukaku rises tonight...)
      or
      B) Francis to Moreno

Rest of the team, any thoughts appreciated!

      Howard (Myhill)
      Bertrand, Darmian, Francis (Nyom, Dawson)
      Sanchez, KDB, Ozil, Mahrez (Hoolahan)
      Vardy, Kane, Pelle

Pelle owners who were gonna sell after this GW, are you bothered by the fact that Lukaku and Kane will most probably rise before you bring them in? I am...

            "Firmly" agree.

Although with Deu, I'm expecting regression, he has a poor attitude and I think that'll get in his way.

      Having benching headache:

Mahrez/ Vardy(obvious reasons not to bench them)
Ayew (kept him for the fixtures.. Probably sell him after this game. Really want to use him one last time)
Willian (Payet replacement.. And a good differential. Would have gone for the 5th mid'er if there hadn't been too many yellows (doubtfuls) No way will I bench him after taking a hit to buy him)

Which one should I reluctantly drop? Thanks!

Debating this myself. His high ownership makes it scary to drop him, but I do think he'll slow down for a bit now.

I may kick the can down the road one more GW

of course it is taking consideration that there are a lot of other options available (more expensive though) and with the tougher fixtures it could slow down his goals too

He still could get charged for that middle finger. Maybe FA are holding it till the record attempt is over. No way in the world is he getting away with that

I'm getting rid after this week with that and fixtures in mind
