Our usual Saturday morning scour for some overlooked alternatives serves up three players who, on their day, are proven Fantasy royalty. We plunder Chelsea and Arsenal’s midfields as the search for an Alexis Sanchez replacement intensifies, whilst we call upon Liverpool’s fit-again frontman to do the business at struggling Newcastle.

Eden Hazard

Admittedly, Eden Hazard (10.9) is in the midst of his worst spell as a Chelsea player, having notched just one goal and three assists through the first 14 Gameweeks. There are signs, however, that both he and the Blues have arrested their descent and are now primed for an upturn in form ahead of a trio of strong home matches (BOU, SUN, WAT) in the next four rounds of fixtures. Indeed, the Belgium international was a thorn in Tottenham’s side last Gameweek, fashioning two of the best chances throughout the encounter.

In terms of his statistical output, Hazard can count himself unlucky that he didn’t record a single assist over the last four Gameweeks, considering that he racked up 10 key passes. Although he’s not posting eye-catching figures on the attacking front, the former Lille winger has still posed the most threat among Chelsea’s midfield contingent, amassing a solid return of seven attempts and six shots the box since Gameweek 11.

Jose Mourinho was delighted with how Hazard fared as a false nine at White Hart Lane, but there’s no guarantee he’ll retain that berth for Bournemouth’s visit. Regardless, Hazard is well placed to profit from a Cherries defence that charts joint-top for goals conceded (18) and top for big chances conceded (22) on the road.

Aaron Ramsey

In the wake of Santi Cazorla being ruled out until March with a knee injury, Aaron Ramsey is poised to enjoy a run of starts in the double pivot. The Welshman will be relishing his return to a central role, given that he rose to prominence in the 2013/14 campaign with 10 goals from a deep-lying midfield berth. With most erstwhile Alexis Sanchez owners plumping for Mesut Ozil as their replacement Arsenal coverage, Ramsey represents a cheaper alternative (8.0 compared to 9.4) that arguably offers more goal threat.

Despite being consigned to the treatment room for a quartet of fixtures, Ramsey has still carded seven more attempts (28 to 21), six more shots inside the box (19 to 13), 13 more penalty-box touches (64 to 51) and one fewer shot on target (seven to eight) than Ozil. Ultimately, the ex-Cardiff City recruit fires off attempts at a much greater frequency (one every 32.3 minutes to 55 minutes) than the Germany international, highlighting his points potential.

Bolstering Ramsey’s case for investment, the Gunners match up against Sunderland (home) and Aston Villa (away) in the next two Gameweeks. The Black Cats under Sam Allardyce will be a tricky proposition for an injury-ravaged Gunners but, in Ramsey, they have a player capable of making late runs into the box to plunder vital goals.

Daniel Sturridge

Daniel Sturridge (10.1) bagged a quick-fire brace on his return to the Reds’ starting line-up for their midweek thrashing of Southampton, reaffirming his capacity for explosive returns. It was a similar story earlier in the campaign when he netted a double at home to Aston Villa, prompting 130,000 managers to hastily recruit the high-priced forward.

Granted, the fact that Sturridge has been sidelined for 53% (564 out of 1060 days) of his Liverpool career renders him a serious risk – but one that could pay dividends. His exceptional eye for goal proves that he’s capable of delivering strong returns even on a short-term basis, with the Merseysiders’ favourable schedule (new, WBA, wat, LEI, sun) facilitating that narrative. Certainly, Sturridge will be rubbing his hands at the prospect of facing a Magpies defence that’s conceded more shots inside the box (69) at home than any other side.

Although Sturridge is unlikely to last the distance at St James’ Park, Jurgen Klopp said that the former Chelsea striker is available for selection after coming through the Saints victory unscathed. Christian Benteke and hat-trick hero Divock Origi are also options, but you’d imagine Klopp will be keen to help Sturridge establish rhythm and consistency of starts.

I've gone Kane over Mane due to Mane being a let down when you expect him to do well, a bit like Lukaku last season. Banking on WBA being outclassed and out hustled by Spurs, and WBA not being as strong as Pelle on here would have others believe.

I’m struggling with UFPL selection for December so I’m writing everything down, enjoy the spiel, this is just part 1 😀

First of all when planning wildcard teams in any game, I like to write a long-list of every player I might seriously consider, to get on this list a player usually needs to meet a couple of the following criteria:
      • Good form (surface or underlying stats)
      • Good fixtures (in UFPL this is can be easy opponents or just MD2/MD3 matches)
      • Good history
      • Budget Friendly (for defenders this is especially important within a team context)
      • Explosive potential
      • OOP (proper OOP not CB -> CDM)

Under these provisions here’s my team-by-team by longlist with fixtures and a brief statement on each team. For MD2/MD3 fixtures I have asterixed them ** or *** accordingly:

Arsenal (SUN, avl**, MCI***, sot, BOU) -Top 4 team w/ good fix.
Cech, Bellerin, Mertesacker, Monreal, Ozil, Ramsey, Walcott, Giroud, Chamberlain, Giroud, Campbell

Aston Villa (sot, ARS**, new, WHM, nor) - Awful team, but fodder options
      Richards, Hutton, Westwood

Bournemouth (che, MUN, wba, CPL, ars) - Awful fix, but fodder options
      Smith, King, Stanislas, Gosling

Chelsea (BOU, lei***, SUN, WAT, mun) - Resurgent top 4 team?
Courtois, Zouma, Ivanovic, Hazard, Willian, Costa

Crystal Palace (eve***, SOT, sto, bou, SWA) - Good fix & budget friendly
      Hennessey, Ward, Dann, Bolasie

Everton (CPL***, nor, LEI, new, STO) - Good fix, attacking team
Howard, Coleman, Funes Mori, Barkley, Deulofeu, Lukaku, Kone

Leicester (swa, CHE***, eve, liv, MCI**) - Hard fix, attacking team
      Simpson, Drinkwater, Mahrez, Vardy

Liverpool (new**, WBA**, wat**, LEI, sun***) - Great fix, resurgent under Klopp
Mignolet, Moreno, Lovren, Skrtel, Henderson Coutinho, Firmino, Benteke, Sturridge

Man City (sto, SWA, ars***, SUN, lei**) - Good fix, title contenders
Hart, Otamendi, Kolarov, Silva, KdB, Sterling, Aguero, Bony, Iheanacho

Man United (WHM, bou, NOR, sto, CHE) - super strong defence, boring af.
      DDG, Smalling, Lingard, Mata

Newcastle (LIV**, tot**, AVL, EVE, wba) - Awful team, hard fix, 2x MD2
      Elliott, Wijnaldum

Norwich (wat, EVE, mun, tot, AVL) - Hard fix, fodder options
      Ryan Bennet, Grabban

Southampton (AVL, cpl, TOT, ARS, whm) - tricky fix, top 6 outsiders
      VVD, Wanyama, Mane, Tadic, Pelle

Stoke (MCI, whm, CPL, MUN, eve) - Awful fix, Walters OOP
      Whelan, Walters

Sunderland (ars, WAT, che, mci, LIV***) Awful fix, resurgent under BFS?
      Billy Jones, Watmore

Swansea (LEI, mci, WHM**, WBA, cpl) - Poor form, okay fix
      Ayew

Tottenham (wba, NEW**, sot, NOR, wat) - Great fix, Top 4 contenders
Lloris, Walker, Alderweireld, Rose, Eriksen, Alli, Kane

Watford (NOR, sun, LIV**, che, TOT) - okay fix, good budget options
Cathcart, Paredes, Anya, Watson, Ighalo, Deeney

West Brom (TOT, liv**, BOU, swa, NEW) - Turgid team, 2 good home fix
      Myhill, Darren Fletcher

West Ham (mun, STO, swa**, avl, SOT) - Not the same w/o Payet
      Lanzini

So that’s 93 players in total who’ll need to be shaken down to a balanced squad of 25 that has options every position, and a good 18 (11 + 7 subs) most weeks.

oh aye, many many 4.0 gks/defenders and 4.5 mids/fwds in there to cover bases just for starters. Also I wanted to have at least one option from each team just to should there are options everywhere.

Now matchday 2 & 3 fixtures are where you turn a good week into a great week and you need to cover each available matchday well so here’s a quick shakedown of the Sunday and Saturday matchdays, and teams with captaincy potential I’ve generously marked with an asterix:

        GW15, MD2:
        Newcastle vs Liverpool*
        MD3:
        Everton* vs Crystal Palace*

        GW16, MD2:
        Aston Villa vs Arsenal*
        Liverpool* vs West Brom
        Spurs* vs Newcastle
        MD3:
        Leicester* vs Chelsea*

        GW17, MD2:
        Watford* vs Liverpool*
        Swansea* vs West Ham
        MD3:
        Arsenal* vs Man City*

        GW18: #N/A

        GW19, MD2:
        Leicester* vs City*
        MD3:
        Sunderland vs Liverpool*

From here you can see Liverpool [4], Arsenal [2], Leicester[2], Man City [2] and Newcastle[2] are the major players, although Leicester [CHE,MCI] and Newcastle [liv, tot] have torrid fixtures in their Sunday/Monday games. Leicester I feel are much better equipped to deal with their matchups than Newcastle however.

Liverpool are definitely a team to take 4 players from while with Arsenal, City and Leicester I will aim to take 2 or 3 from each depending on how my other picks look. I will have a few core “essential” picks from other teams and the rest of the team will plug the gaps.

Such a long article yet the writer leaves out Butland from Stoke.

Reminds me of the Blackadder episode where Dr Johnson writes the first ever dictionary and misses out the word 'sausage' from his printed version.

IMO Stoke aren't the real deal, they have very hard fixtures for December and if I'm picking a goalie with MD1 games only, its almost certainly DDG.

        FORMATION:

As goals are more valuable in UFPL (6 points in any position) than FPL, getting goalscorers is hugely important and puts more of an emphasis having an attack heavy team. Furthermore this means you need to be on all the right heavy hitters and cannot afford to spread your team too thinly. Generally, I find it best to select a team around a 2/5/6/5 formation and then pick 7 fillers accordingly with remaining cash and picking out any remaining MD2/3 fixtures.

        LIVERPOOL:
This one is really tricky for me as they are the key to the entire month so you have to get all 4 spot on. The 7 I’ve narrowed it down to are Mignolet, Lovren, Moreno, Coutinho, Firmino, Benteke & Sturridge. I’ve dropped Skrtel & Hendo because their alternatives are more attacking and with Liverpool assets we need to look at absolute points rather value when they are to be relied on so heavily.

The key problems are Coutinho may miss this week and Lovren may miss the final week with Sakho returning. However these pointers don’t immediately rule out Coutinho or Lovren as they’re my preferred options when fit.

        GOALKEEPERS:
The way I see it there are 3 possible ways to plan goalkeepers.

        A) One main GK with two fodder (Hennessey & Elliott) around him
        B) Two matchday rotating GKs with a rotating fodder around them
        C) Three matchday rotating GKs

The problem with C is that although it is possible, it is a prohibitively expensive way of ensuring a GK clean sheet, especially this month where the “ideal” Hart/Courtois/Mignolet.

A looks best with DDG playing 5 matchday 1s with Hennessey and Elliot on the bench once each, Courtois in a similar situation to DDG, or with Mignolet with 4 later matchdays and Hennessey featuring around this (3x MD1 and 1x MD3).

Meanwhile B looks amazing with DDG + Mignolet + Hennessey for 4 weeks of MD1/MD2 rotation with Hennessey looking on from afar. Alternatively Courtois + Mignolet + Hennessey looks similarly strong but with two potential weeks for a MD1/MD2/MD3 treble.

This is another issue that relies on many other moving parts so I’ll leave these options below to come back to:

        • DDG, Hennessey, Elliott
        • Courtois, Hennessey, Elliott
        • Mignolet, Hennessey, Elliott
        • DDG, Mignolet, Hennessey
        • Courtois, Mignolet, Hennessey

Honourable mentions to Howard, Cech and Myhill who I've now cut.

        DEFENDERS:

Although I can understand the appeal of loading up 3x on a defence and backing it each week, thats far too much risk for me and if you can get ⅔ clean sheets at the back each week with maybe an attacking return thrown in, you’re grand. For this reason I’d look to getting the best attacking defender from a handful of big teams and rotating them as applicable.

Teams that strongly need considering in defence because of fixtures are essentially all of the top 6 contenders bar Leicester, who can’t defend anyway. So looking at my attacking defenders list with one eye on CBI & Recovery numbers on the UFPL site.
        http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/public-stats-tables/view/12209/

        Arsenal:
Bellerin is marginally more attacking but Monreal puts up Monster CBI and Recovery numbers so I’m going to edge it towards Monreal here.

        Chelsea:
No Chelsea defenders make my list but Zouma looks a good bet as the cheapest route into the defence and nailed.

        Everton:
There’s only one option really, Seamus Coleman has the pedigree and is showing it again on return from injury. Funes Mori is dangerous from set pieces but he’s no match for Coleman.

        Liverpool:
        As covered, Moreno or Lovren.

        Man City:
Kolarov at 5.5 is a no brainer even with rotation risk.

        Man U:
Smalling is the only nailed defender so we can’t really look past him. Thankfully he has shooting and CBIs to back him up too.

        Tottenham:
Alderweireld, Walker and Rose all look good bets and spurs may be worth a double up here. If taking one, it is Alderweireld who gets first preference with goal threat and CBIs & Recoveries to his name.

Beyond these, Joel Ward and Billy Jones interest me as attacking threats while Smith, Bennett and Simpson all pop up as playing bench fodder who may be worked around the core picks. Watford’s Paredes at right wing and £4.5m also interests me having started for the first time last week but like Ward & Jones will probably be 0.5m too expensive to justify his pick.

My first two picks confirmed in my team are:
        • Alderweireld
        • Kolarov
While Smalling and Zouma’s fates may rest on my goalkeeper decisions.

        FORWARDS

These are crucial, you want 3 playing each MD1 and ideally two subs each gw but a minimum of one. From my hot shots table

        http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/public-stats-tables/view/12374/

Vardy, Kane & Lukaku pick themselves. Aguero looks like an option best loaned in when he’s fit & firing, Kone has concerns over gametime, Deeney can be replaced by Ighalo for 0.5m to save money and Sturridge looks like a must due to all his MD2s.

Taking Lukaku, Kane, Vardy, Sturridge my situation for the gameweeks looks like this:

        gw15: Vardy(1), Kane (1), Sturridge (2), Lukaku (3)
        gw16: Lukaku(1), Sturridge (2), Kane (2), Vardy (3)
        gw17: Lukaku(1), Kane(1), Vardy (1) Sturridge(2)
        gw18 All (1)
        gw19: Kane (1), Lukaku (1), Vardy (2), Sturridge (3)

Although Aguero is extremely tempting for the gw16 fixture at home vs Swansea and gw17 md3 vs Arsenal, I am going to add Giroud and Ighalo for added balance at less cost and more assuredness of starts.
