Im Not Marshal Foch Im Not Marshal Foch
Share:

If ever a game summed up a player, surely Sunday’s match between West Brom and Manchester City showed us all the two sides of City’s prodigious striker Mario Balotelli. The Italian rewarded the faith of his manager with two goals in six minutes in only his second start in the Premier League. Unfortunately for Mancini, Balotelli made the transformation from hero to villain with a straight red card in the second-half for a reckless kick during a tangle with Youssouf Mulumbu.

Todays dismissal highlighted Balotelli’s addiction to controversy and for Fantasy Football Managers was the equivalent of an espresso at the end of a drunken meal. Certainly it would have made many managers wary of bringing in a striker who, whilst has obvious talent, still has a hot headed fieriness. Temperamental players are the last thing the majority of Fantasy Football managers want or need.

This game and the display of Balotelli served to ease the pressure which had been building on manager Roberto Mancini who has been looking to stop a run in which had City lost their last three games. Mancini was clearly happy with his strikers performance;

“For me, Mario Balotelli played very well. The referee should not have given a red card, absolutely not. It’s possible we may appeal.”

That will be promising to the ears of those who are looking to bring in the fiery Italian. However it is worth remembering that frivolous appeals can often lead to extended cautions so City, and FPL’s finest will need to tread carefully.

The inclusion of the Italian saw James Milner dropped to the bench and increased the rotation risk around the Manchester City team. From an attacking perspective it is nearly impossible to determine the line-up for the Citizens and going forward investment in Manchester City midfielders and attackers, bar talismanic captain Carlos Tevez, is becoming more of a minefield. Caution and patience is recommended.

Unfortunately this is not something that 1,282 managers displayed this afternoon. That is the amount (and rising at time of writing) who knee-jerkingly transferred in Balotelli today. A large number of those did so during the game. If ever there was a test case in why you shouldn’t do your transfers early then this was it.

-Elsewhere Liverpool overcame champions Chelsea with a first half performance from Fernando Torres which reminded us all why he is so revered throughout the world. Two goals, the second a sublime curling effort, proved too much for Chelsea at Anfield and served to open up the title race. It also exposed how Chelsea struggle without their big hitters Lampard, Essien and Drogba. It was no coincidence that their performance improved in the second half with the introduction of the Ivorian, but for those who have the big striker in their team, a single point was a disappointing return.

Overall this week served up its fair share of headaches, underperformance of key players and low scores across the board. Thankfully we only have two days before the next Gameweek comes along.

You're in danger territory when you start claiming that players are 'fixture proof'. For every 9 pointer against Utd, there's a 39 minute cameo vs Newcastle....

Carroll is playing Blackeye Rovers, not Stoke, but I guess that the point stands. Still, you surely have to start him?! Are you planning to take a point hit so that you don't have to play him??? Utter madness if so!!

Carroll would be on the bench. I'd need to take the hit to rid myself of Clev (BOO) and Hernandez (Double BOO) VdV and Odim have bloody good fixtures, i want some of that. Time for me to leave the future of Man Utd to develop in peace.

Will Hernandez even play? If you play 4-4-2 then you'll most probably lose, and that means only one of Hernandez or Berbatov will play.

Besides, without Giggs, Nani, Rooney et al you'll struggle to score against a very good Citeh defence.

And... with all the dodgy decisions that Stoke have had recently I bet they'll be given a soft penalty in one of the next to games. And Methers will step up and bang it in!

Out of hernandez and rooney for lone striker I'm pretty sure Fergie would be hard pushed not to start hernandez- maybe pretend berba has flu still...

Also, with scholes in midfield you can always see a lot of chances being created, and I reckon chica's got the pace to get round the back of citeh and cause a lot of problems- IF they decide to actually attack....

With this seasons 442, yes berba and hernandez/rooney might just play vs the big teams. The 442 has 2 defensive mids, and berba drops deep.

    My thoughts…
Piquionne: short term – say the next 4-5 GWs.
Odemwingie: long term – the next possibly 10-11 GWs

Of course things could change significantly but I’ve gone for Piquionne.

    Nani, Malouda, Nasri, Fabs, Adam
    Varney, Drogba, Hernandez

I have 2 free transfers and 0.4 in the bank

With Jara and Nani out for Weds....what transfers to people recommend. Nasri to a KDavies is my current thought.

I can't believe this gw just gone-it's an unpredictable game and makes me think twice about taking points hits. I would have had 15 more points if I had made no changes as I would have had Simpson and Enrique playing-I honestly felt they were in danger of getting negative scores-bizarre!

I've just done some very bad and unreliable maths...

My overall rank last year was 63.8 points per week. To be the same rank now is 57.7. Not as much of a difference as I thought, actually.

Using another 'completely random' team, 45th overall last season was 67 points per week, and this season is 58.9.

It was the easiest one to find an equivalent for. If I'd known Reeson's winning total from last year then you'd have been on the cutting room floor, and I know you wouldn't like that.

Spent a little while working on this. How's this for a transfer plan...?

GW12: Coleman and Simpson for Jones and Alcaraz (2 free)
GW13: N'Zog for Nasri (at home to WBA)
GW14: Cesc for Malouda (for Tottenham... could be back to best)
GW15: Kolarov/Bosingwa in for Faye (if either hold down starts)
GW16: Robinson for Jaaskerlainen (Blackburn enter a run of good games)

Cheers Andy... I know, always risky planning in advance, but I like to have something there to keep my eye on (even if I end up doing something different), it keeps me focused

King Cabbage, I think you've mistaken my meaning... I meant Fabregas in for Malouda (not out for). I currently have Malouda and Nasri, not the other way round

Would leave me with a core base of 3-3-2 who could play every week

      Elmo, Bos/Kolarov, Konch

      VDV, Nani, Cesc

      Drogba, Tevez

Then each week I would simply have to pick two out of Simpson, Coleman, Adam, N'Zogbia, Carroll, depending on fixtures

It simple wont happen....Something will crop up.

By then I reckon Coleman will be gone, somebody will be injured and another will be off form.

2 weeks tops are the length of my plans now. And they are fluid enough to still allow 2 or 3 different variations.

I can't remember the rest of the 'joke', but it's bound to be stupid.

trust me dont have a plan.

i had a plan set up a few weeks ago to get fabs and vdv in and guess what i dropped dempsey last week for fabs and this week vdv got injured. Getting almohammady for alex to release a bit of money did work but just be prepared to change your plan , dont get into the thinking they are must haves. Review it every week is my advice.

To paraphrase a great man "[Fantasy] Football- bloody hell!"

The two players who high scored for me this week are the two I was extremely close to leaving out- and to top it all fabs/nasri do zip!

It's always fun when Fabregas, Nasri, Drogba and Alex score a grand total of 3 points between them.

I foolishly thought that I was on for quite a good week after getting off to a relatively good start on Saturday. But captain Cesc and his merry band of idiots f*cked that up!
