Thomas Vermaelen returns to action for Arsenal and declares himself fit for the weekend game against Chelsea. David Moyes reckons Jack Rodwell is benefitting from Mikel Arteta’s departure, while Roberto Martinez lavishes praise on one of his Wigan wingers. Here’s this morning’s Scribbles, folks:

Last night saw the return of Thomas Vermaelen to first-team action for the first time in two months. The Belgian played in Arsenal’s 2-1 Carling Cup win over Bolton but was withdrawn towards the end of the game and while post-match reports had earlier indicated he had to come off due to a calf problem, Vermaelen confirmed after the game to he was fine:

It was great to be back and to get time on the pitch. I felt fresh, I’m OK and am available for Saturday.

Ju-Young Park scored in only his second game for Arsenal last night as the Gunners came back from one down to send Bolton out of the cup. Arsene Wenger sang the praises of the South Korean and reckons he’s now in the mix for league action:

He showed intelligence in his link play with others, the quality of his movement was exceptional and his finishing was absolutely fantastic. He’s ready to play a league game.

Sir Alex Ferguson named a strong side for Man United’s trip to Aldershot last night. Nemanja Vidic’s return to domestic action saw him partnered with Phil Jones in the heart of the back-four, while the likes of Dimitar Berbatov and Antonio Valencia celebrated rare starts by grabbing a goal each in the 3-0 win.

With a goal and assist in the weekend game at Fulham, Jack Rodwell caught the eye. Speaking yesterday, David Moyes reckons the red card the midfielder received against Liverpool, and its subsequent withdrawal by the FA, has helped improve Rodwell’s game. Moyes also went on to admit Mikel Arteta’s move to Arsenal has had a positive impact on the player:

In a way, I think the backing he has got off everyone after the red card has actually helped him – to see everyone felt it was the right thing to do has shown him his tackle was a good tackle. He’s tackling in training and the way he’s gone about things has improved….I think Jack’s feeling as if he might have to be one of the main men since Mikel left. Before, he was always just ‘the boy’. He has to take on that mantle and he’s just beginning to look as though he might be able to carry it. He’s got the ability to score with both feet and he’s a good striker of the ball. I think he’s beginning to believe a wee bit more.

Owen Hargreaves is injured again. The midfielder is out of tonight’s Carling Cup game with Wolves and is set to miss the weekend’s league match with Mick McCarthy’s side after suffering a knock in training. Hargreaves received a kick on the calf that has prevented him from training for the last few days, though is expected to return to full training with Man City this morning. Coach David Platt described it as nothing more than a niggle.

Aston Villa have suspended Barry Bannan until further notice amid allegations of drink driving. The young Scotsman has made a strong start to the domestic campaign but a club statement announced he will be unavailable for this weekend’s trip to Sunderland. Villa received some good news yesterday, though, with Chris Herd’s red card overturned by the FA after his wrongful dismissal against West Brom last Saturday. Alan Hutton is doubtful for the weekend, however, after picking up a facial injury in the home defeat by the Baggies.

Man City finally found Carlos Tevez guilty at a disciplinary hearing yesterday, after the Argentine’s defiance at Bayern Munich a few weeks back. The bottom line, though, is that he is now available for selection to Roberto Mancini, though it’s doubtful whether the City boss will ever recall his former skipper. Tevez looks set to appeal the decision and reports even suggest he is looking to sue Mancini for defamation of character.

Roberto Martinez reckons the return to fitness of Albert Crusat will be significant to Wigan’s bid to push up the table. The winger has been blighted with an ankle injury since joining the Latics this summer but made his first start in last weekend’s narrow defeat at Newcastle. Martinez said yesterday:

The way Albert plays, the explosive pace he has and the impact he can make, can really kick-start our season. It was great to see him involved at Newcastle and I thought he looked very sharp. As you saw, Albert is a player who will flourish in the Premier League, someone who’ll give us a lot of options in attack. We have to be patient with him while he finds his feet, but, once he does that properly, he’ll be worth the wait.

Newcastle suffered an injury blow yesterday with the announcement that Cheik Tiote is a doubt for Monday night’s trip to Stoke due to a knee problem. The Ivorian has been an ever-present in Alan Pardew’s midfield this season and has been instrumental in their unbeaten start to the campaign. Steven Taylor has a broken nose but is likely to play, though should miss tonight’s Carling Cup match with Blackburn.

Tony Pulis received some good news on the defensive front yesterday. Jonathan Woodgate has missed the last three Stoke games due to a calf problem but could feature in tonight’s Carling Cup clash with Liverpool.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Yeah maybe but at 4.0 it makes a difference in my future transfers.
Huth seems to be out of favour and wanting to go home from what someone posted midweek and Stoke fans seem to think he is first choice and one of their best lately.
Think Wilson is at risk after the last few weeks plus left-back isnt his position, but he is a midfielder on fpl anyway so nobody should have him

Maybe. What annoys me about FPL is that not every player is available to select, for example take Fryers for us last night. Let's say he had a stormer and scored 4 goals (somehow....), he could start again at the weekend but he wouldn't be available, why not?

Just asked you a question and then they went and did a new post :-). Good start to the season for you. I have a very similar team to you , the main difference is i have mata and you have silva. I want to put silva in but im not convinced he will start this gwk. Changing silva to mata would give me coverage for all the top teams ( im assuming thats what you have gone for with your selections also). What do you think?silva or mata, i would have to change before silva goes up again but would leave me with nothing in the bank. Its never good having no money spare.

People are very iffy about Silva atm and I can see why, he isn't amazingly consistent points wise...but he is brilliant City coverage as he seems to start 8 games out of 9! Ii may help you to know I was too on the Mata wagon, but thanks to my WC I transferred to the VDV and Sturridge combo, very luckily timed as well....I would prefer Silva for Mata to be honest as I think he'll be more consistent in the coming weeks, he is City atm. Mata has proved that he has anything more than an assist a game so far...and that's what prompted me to switch, that and Sturridges awesome price 🙂

A bit waffley but I would suggest to yes make that switch to Silva.

He has only had 1 out of 8 start where he has scored less than 5
                9 10 2 10 5 6 6 1* 12

Ok cheers, i always intended to get silva i just couldnt decide who for,i think mata would be the best option cos taking nani out would leave me with no united cover and i have been burnt by that in the past. It will be a disaster if silva misses this gwk if i transfer him in cos it will cost me 4pointsto do the transfer. His price just keeps going up, i was hoping he woud stay at 10.2 so i could do the switch next gw for free .

Alas Abedayor is owned by more than VDV, so not a differential sadly.

That aside I do think it is a good idea. RVP is about as essestial as they come at the moment and Ade gives you some Spurs coverage at least. You just have to hope the VDV doesn't go mental!

I think Boyata is not a very good pick, mainly due to the fact that Bolton have one of the worst defences in the premiership and that at that price you can get a bit more for your money with players like Wilkinson and Simpson... ... Oh wait, you've already got them!!

Turner (4.3m) is just out of reach, which is a shame as that would be an improvement.

However, not worth a transfer. Save them for next week. I wouldn't worry too much about Tottenham coverage- you have VdV!

I decided early in the season to captain Rooney every week regardless of fixtures, as i thought he would probably finish the top FPL player, and i dont want to miss out on any big points hauls by shifting my captain choice. However im starting to have second thoughts on this tactic. Any thoughts on this subject guys?

I've sold Rooney in my WC. May regret it but would rather see him do well out of my team, than do crap in my team. Horrible memories of Drogba last season who was a ''season keeper'', with good fixtures and a perma captain. ''One more'' week syndrome drove me insane. Something is clearly up with Roo and whilst on pens and not playing as bad as last season, I'd rather have Nani as my coverage for the time being.

Nani is having limited game time this also worries me. I'm WC'n in a few weeks and Rooney is the first man on my team sheet but I dont know that'l be the case if he's still in a mood. I got off Drogba at the right time last year but I too fear Rooneyws best days are behind him. Last year Rooney went a couple of months without decent FPL points, alot of people forget this.

I captained him last week, as a I thought a pen or a freekick was likely even without a goal from open play. Debated whether to swicth to RVP or Saurez, when the Arsenal teamsheet came out I was chuffed I'd made the right choice...lol! But then I had him for both hat-tricks so can't win them all!

Still unsure for this week, all three away from home...

Hello Mr Norwich. Of your good value players who would you recommend - Pilkington? WesHoo? Johnson?

As a Leeds fan I'm very surprised Johnson is performing in the Prem. He was inconsistent at best even in League 1 for us. Nearly crashed when I was driving and heard he was being considered for England. Is he actually playing well or is he just good in FF because of set pieces?

I can't stop going on about Pilkington. Definitely worth it. Actually, I'll just copy what I said earlier:

Pilks is definitely our best midfield option. What suits him is our formation. Because we play with the lone striker, he has to cut in a bit to provide another attacking outlet for Hoolahan and Morrison, hence why he gets in a lot of goal scoring positions. However, since Holt came on and killed it against Liverpool, PL might change his lineup to get Holt in, which might restrict his goal potential. But it will mean he’s got a better chance of getting assists.

Johnson has been an absolute star. I never rated him at Leeds and was a bit disappointed when we first got him. Boy has he proved me wrong. His passes have been brilliant and he's provided a great anchor for the midfield. Plus his set pieces are very good and, considering we've scored 4 or 5 from set pieces this year, it's made him look good in FF. He's got a good long shot too

Interesting. I never thought he deserved all the abuse he got from the Leeds crowd as he always gave 100% and covered more ground than any other player. Quality wise I really thought he was lacking though apart from being quite good in the air.

Am I right in thinking he's basically playing DMF for you boys then?

      depends...

If you've got 2 transfers and can't see where else to do your transfer, then yes- worth it.

If you've got 1 free transfer, then maybe but probs not- save it for another week. I always think with such situations, if you wait a while, you'll get more information. Wilkinson will either play and become a better pick and probably better value, at which point you can still bring him in or he'll not play and you'll be gutted you wasted a transfer.

If it's for a hit, no way.

I've got the 1 free trade, but I feel my team is really nicely set up at the moment, it's just a matter of fine tuning.

Look at the confidence a score of 70 gives you!

Love the midfield! So strong. Like the strike-force but I worry you don't have the flexibility to get the likes of RVP, Rooney or Aguero for captaincy options in the next few weeks. That's why I'd keep the transfer, so you can grab the best captaincy options, without taking a hit.

Like the defence and goalies but not such a fan of Mertesacker or, like you say, Hall. This season I'd steer clear of Arsenal defenders- they defend like a mid-table team at the moment.
All in all though, good team- should climb up the rankings in the next few weeks.

Interesting article from Zonal Marking on the impact of Villas-Boas' pressing game on Chelsea's defence:

    http://www.zonalmarking.net/2011/10/26/chelsea-villas-boas-pressing/

It confirms my impression that they're committing more fouls at the moment and leaving themselves more prone to one-on-one situations due to playing a high line.

True, but as the article argues, when you defend more deeply, opponents are forced to shoot more often from distance out of frustration. A high number of shots conceded doesn't always mean that you're weak defensively.

Jack-off...didnt get a chance to your helpful comment on Silva on previous page......
I was merely trying to garner opinion (while offering my own) on whether Aguero or Silva is the better bet for ManC coverage. If you decide (as i have) that i am only going to have one, then it's a decision to be made. I think i made it pretty clear that Silva is going to get A LOT of points, and consisently as well...however i think Ageuro is the more explosive option...hopefully more likely to get you 10-15 points as your captain.

Agree. Silva's no doubt established himself as one of the best fantasy picks this season but if I knew Aguero and Silva were playing and had an easy fixture, I'd rather captain Aguero.

That's fair enough then, I just think Silva is more essential.
With Nani failing at the moment, Mata yet to prove himself, Young in the Nani category and no other appealing high-price mid options besides VDV (most teams have at least 2 big midfielders/mostly 3)
Then against Aguero you have Rooney/RVP who are just as good/better, along with Adebayor and Sturridge offering cheaper value picks then there is more room to fit Silva in.
Plus with the CL and Balotelli and Dzeko both scoring recently, Silva is the more nailed on option.

Don't get me wrong, if I was wildcarding now, Silva would be in more team and if I had to choose between Silva and Aguero, I'd go Silva for the reasons people have mentioned above but I'd still captain Aguero over Silva IF I knew both were playing.

I don't think you can say that just because something Silva has outscored Aguero more often so far this season, that he will continue to outscore Aguero more often.

But yeah, I'm intrigued as to why people think Aguero might not start this weekend?

I know i know, but we can only base it on results so far and not the future.
If i has Aguero id captain him over Silva in an easy fixture i believe.
Just what certain individuals think on here, eg. VdV is not a good pick (said a few weeks ago not now obviously) or Sturridge is a huge rotation risk/isnt first choice.
He hasnt played much lately so he hardly needs a rest, he will get 60 minutes or around that IMO

Connor, I would also add that there are fewer Mid options with similar points potential as Silva, but up front, many more (Rooney, RvP, Ade, Suarez, Bent). That factors in my thinking, which is steering me to bite the bullet soon and switch Nasri to Silva.

Any thoughts on Hernandez as Man U cover from next week? Don't want Rooney and don;t want to lose Mata / Silva/ VDV yet.

    Transfers planned:
    Young > Walters
DeLaet > Walker (4 point hit)

I don't normally take hits for defenders, but done 2 this season, bringing Kompany and now Walker in. Can downgrade someone like Bosingwa/Ward to McAuley in a couple of weeks.

    Vorm (Krul)
    Kompany Bosingwa Walker (Simpson Ward)
    Walters VDV Silva Dyer (Petrov)
    Suarez Sturridge RVP

    Thoughts on transfers?

With no Rooney, I don't see why you'd ditch Ashley, certainly not for Walters. I'm also not a big fan of Spurs Defs, CS's are far too rare. I'd look at switching DeLaet for Wilkinson of Stoke this week.

Walters at home has impressed me and Young for his price isn't currently cutting it.

Walker is playing really well attacking wise.

OK, Cleverley is a reasonable option, but my Spurs Def view stands. Still, each to their own, makes the game interesting/annoying etc.

Im considering Cleverly also, at the moment I have no Nani/Young/Rooney but there is no way id go without at least 1 of them from GW11 onwards!
Nani for me unless RVP cracks in the next game before I get him in

I have Agbon in my team. I bought him for 6.5 just before he bandwagoned into the stratosphere. Now I get the feeling that his form is coming off and Bent is going to pick up the points in his stead. Add to that a pretty nasty run of fixtures coming up can anyone give me a reason to, hold onto him after GW11? Apart from Sturridge, is there anybody else out there at 6.9 who's worth buying?

Maybe take him out for GW12 then. Villa have Spurs, then a hard away game to Swansea (solid at home) and then Man U

You've answered your own question Piers, Studge is your man if you see Agbongo form dipping.

may not be an answer to your ques, but graham at 4.8 is a short-term steal, decided against shipping him out...returned 3 goals and an assist in 3 games.

Aggy > Bendy could be the informed choice here.

I've got him and will probably be removing him after the Norwich game. Gives you two GWs to decide who else is worth bringing in around that price (eg Sturridge, even Graham?) or if he may be worth keeping with his price continuing to rise

He looked very sharp in pre-season and very creative. I believe he has the potential to deliver quite a few assists but I'd be worried about game time. For not dissimilar price, Anderson may be the better shout for relatively cheap MU cover.

Very good I would have thought. Milner out Nasri in, Silva out ???, Johnson in. Silva's the big question.

We'll get a better idea after tonight's game. The form Wolves are in i would say Silva will get a rest so someone will come in.
