Im Not Marshal Foch Im Not Marshal Foch
Share:

If ever a game summed up a player, surely Sunday’s match between West Brom and Manchester City showed us all the two sides of City’s prodigious striker Mario Balotelli. The Italian rewarded the faith of his manager with two goals in six minutes in only his second start in the Premier League. Unfortunately for Mancini, Balotelli made the transformation from hero to villain with a straight red card in the second-half for a reckless kick during a tangle with Youssouf Mulumbu.

Todays dismissal highlighted Balotelli’s addiction to controversy and for Fantasy Football Managers was the equivalent of an espresso at the end of a drunken meal. Certainly it would have made many managers wary of bringing in a striker who, whilst has obvious talent, still has a hot headed fieriness. Temperamental players are the last thing the majority of Fantasy Football managers want or need.

This game and the display of Balotelli served to ease the pressure which had been building on manager Roberto Mancini who has been looking to stop a run in which had City lost their last three games. Mancini was clearly happy with his strikers performance;

“For me, Mario Balotelli played very well. The referee should not have given a red card, absolutely not. It’s possible we may appeal.”

That will be promising to the ears of those who are looking to bring in the fiery Italian. However it is worth remembering that frivolous appeals can often lead to extended cautions so City, and FPL’s finest will need to tread carefully.

The inclusion of the Italian saw James Milner dropped to the bench and increased the rotation risk around the Manchester City team. From an attacking perspective it is nearly impossible to determine the line-up for the Citizens and going forward investment in Manchester City midfielders and attackers, bar talismanic captain Carlos Tevez, is becoming more of a minefield. Caution and patience is recommended.

Unfortunately this is not something that 1,282 managers displayed this afternoon. That is the amount (and rising at time of writing) who knee-jerkingly transferred in Balotelli today. A large number of those did so during the game. If ever there was a test case in why you shouldn’t do your transfers early then this was it.

-Elsewhere Liverpool overcame champions Chelsea with a first half performance from Fernando Torres which reminded us all why he is so revered throughout the world. Two goals, the second a sublime curling effort, proved too much for Chelsea at Anfield and served to open up the title race. It also exposed how Chelsea struggle without their big hitters Lampard, Essien and Drogba. It was no coincidence that their performance improved in the second half with the introduction of the Ivorian, but for those who have the big striker in their team, a single point was a disappointing return.

Overall this week served up its fair share of headaches, underperformance of key players and low scores across the board. Thankfully we only have two days before the next Gameweek comes along.

Lads, we're helping each other here... give me a position of Def-Mid-Att (not sorted the keepers yet) and a future 1-5 GWs + upper price bracket and I'll tell you which is the best player to go for.

I am tempted to do Shawcross to Kaboul for the very short term. He plays against Sunderland and Blackburn at home in the next two, he only costs 4.8, King seems to be out, so he is guaranteed a place and he is a great aerial threat at set pieces.

Kinda answering your question but as I am very low rankied at the moment compared to you, it is more a discussion with you rather than a suggestion.

It does not always work like that. It is not only for which team he plays but also what kind of player he is and if he can score a goal even when his team concedes. I will agree with you in a way about West Ham but only for Da Costa if he is fit. Forgot to mention him because I bought him last week but then he turned out to be slightly injured. If he plays he is a very good choice as well in my opinion at least in the attacking department of defenders.

Barton is the steadier pick for me, he is on set pieces and attracts BP. Nolan will have the odd big week, but is more prone to 2 pointers.

Nolan has the same number of bonus points as Barton and SIX more goals. Barton manages an assist about one game in four and Nolan has none. But it's still got to be Nolan, surely?

Honestly, not for me. If they continued with the 4-5-1 there would be more call for him rather than Barton. However in the 4-4-2 I think Nolan is going to be a new version of Rob Lee, he used to start every season with a shedload of goals and then do nowt much for the rest of the campaign. More logically though, if you consider a game like today's, when we are in a tight contest our main strength is danger from set-pieces, Barton delivers those. Nolan has also gone down the penalty list which needs to be borne in mind.

Yeah its a tough one, mainly gut instinct but I think Samba does really well against big physical opponents. I think Newcastle will win, but it will be a low scoring affair with someone tricksy like Gutierrez scoring. Keep an eye on Ameobi in the match too, with Samba having his hands full marking Carroll I'd fancy Ameobi to do a little damage

Djourou's spot will very soon be under threat from Vermaelen. Oh & the Arsenal defence is a bit crap

Makes me wonder why people buy into the Arsenal defence. Carroll being something of a giant, was going to have a field day in that back line.

The only expensive defender worth their value, is Cashley.

Yeah fully agree. I think there is value to be had around the 5ish mark, Samba, the big Scouse Greek, Elmo, etc but wouldnt be pushed about spending too much more.

Samba to Coleman is looking so obvious to me, but I keep thinking Coleman might get rested, would give me:

        Foster
        A.Cole Simpson Coleman
        Fabregas Malouda VDV Arteta Nzogbia
        Drogba Carroll

        Jaas Elmander Gohouri Tamas

        GW 12: Nani - Young
        GW 14: Malouda - Nani
        GW 14: Chamakh - Tevez

Good plan? It means having Chamakh on my bench for 2 weeks.

Yeah he's been really impressive on and off the field. I thought our standout players were Enrique who did really well against Walcott and Tiote had Fabbers in his pocket for much of the game, never seen Fabregas so frustrated.
I must say I was delighted to see RVP back.

Yup, you were impressive. Tiote was good but i wouldnt say Cesc was in his pocket, he just had a real bad game, sloppy passes, bottled every 50/50, not at his usual pace, quite worrying. Hopefully RVP stays fit!!

Young has Man Utd, Arsenal and Liverpool in the next 5 weeks, and Villa have no fit strikers for him to cross to (suppose he might play up front, possibly). It's a bit risky, but Blackpool at home might pay off.

Nani and Tevez from GW14 look fairly essential.

just sent my first ever email to fpl towers. next thing you know kygiakos' will be mistaken for Ryan Babel!

Hi, I'm sure I'm not alone brining up this issue, but you never know so here goes. It seems the press association have managed to get 6ft 2 Ivorian Yaya Toure mixed up with 5ft 7 Spaniard David Silva (or sexy little chipmunk) as my sister calls him. In doing so the assist for Man City's second goal today was given to Yaya Toure for a pass David Silva made. This error has filtered through onto FPL unfortunately. Had it been John, of Jedward fame, who made the delicious pass over the top of the West Brom defence, and the press association gave the assist to Edward I could understand the mistaken identity. These two ludicrously paid individuals however are easier to tell apart.
Thanks for your time, and keep up the good work.

the debateable issue about the assist was whether balotelli loses possession of the ball or not in turning tamas, throwing an uninvolved yaya toure into the mix was baffling

He didn't lose possession though did he? His first touch was possibly not quite as he meant it (amazing if he did) but Tamas never got a touch. It's sure to be given to Silva.

Stick with it. You might get nice returns from Bos if he starts next two (same goes for Mal and Drog). Look at Simpson for a direct swap for your 3.9 DEF. As I said, stick with it, your squad should come good.

Im thinking of using my free for the following

Out Kolo Toure (already have hart
        out Berbatov

        In simpson
        In Torres

Is this likely to work out well or is it a bit silly?

Roonandez partnership would do well i reckon. Wayne could be in the hole and get more involved in the build up play too.

Er, yeah Berba annoys the p*ss out of me. Not his style of play, it's the way he moans and whinges to the other players, creates a bad viiiibbbbe maaaaaaan.

It has been a bad weekend, still nice to see Chelsea lose 😀

Seeings as your reserve team beat Wolves im sure we'll struggle next week with our first 11. I can see a draw. Oh really, i havnt seen him moan but then i dont follow utd as much as you. Getting Tevez in for the derby? I know you want to! 😉

If it does turn out to be the turning point for Torres, you'll have got in at the start of a big purple patch. Berbatov just looks a no go ATM.

Thiiiiiink. Match winning goals vs Valencia and Stoke. Couple that with no other stand out players apart from Vida, easy choice. Plus the fans voted for it, and they (we) love him to death. Btw the stuff about conspiracy regarding Balotelli getting banned for the Utd game is seriously retarded. Remember Rio getting a 4 match ban when that Hull player attacked his elbow with his face? You rentboyz, unbelievable!

Since when was there a conspiracy? Balotelli deserved to be sent off, although these things do have a habit of happening before a match with Utd. And the reverse happens with Chelsea, like Joe Cole getting injured a week before the game today. 😉

Do the Champions League games count? Surely not, so that Valencia goal means shit.. So a match winning tap in against Stoke is worth being crowned as the best player in the league for an entire month? Give over.

its tough... need tevez somehow which basically means axe malouda or fabregas. It's annoying because I've waited for odem but as a long term third striker I'd rather have carroll. If i drop fab I can get him in easily for malouda later... its just malouda has two juicy home games coming up
