Theo Walcott and Olivier Giroud grab a goal apiece as Arsenal defeat City at the Emirates. Mesut Ozil provides a pair of assists and has now produced points in 11 successive Gameweeks. Sergio Aguero lasts just over an hour for the beaten visitors, with Yaya Toure’s late strike proving scant consolation.

Ozil Guides Gunners to Victory

Arsenal moved to within two points of the summit by way of a 2-1 home win over fellow title-chasers Manchester City at the Emirates last night. Mesut Ozil delivered attacking returns for the 11th Gameweek in succession, turning provider for both of the Gunners’ goals. The Germany international has now amassed an incredible 15 assists in 16 league outings, positioning him seven clear of Gerard Deulofeu (eight assists) on the distribution front.

Theo Walcott set the tone for the hosts with a searing strike in 33rd minute, while Olivier Giroud doubled their advantage with his seventh goal in as many matches – illuminating the wealth of viable routes into Arsenal’s attack. Aaron Ramsey didn’t trouble the scoreboard at the Emirates but was the only midfielder among his team to card a shot inside the box (three), illustrating his penchant for late runs into the area.

Given that the north Londoners enjoy two favourable home ties (BOU, NEW) beyond a trip to Southampton, the Gunners’ chief protagonists look well placed to perpetuate their purple patch. Only Everton (eight) have shipped more goals than the Saints (seven) during the last four Gameweeks, while Bournemouth and Newcastle United rank joint-second for goals conceded (32) this term, which bodes well for Arsenal’s attacking prospects.

After the match, Arsene Wenger admitted that Ozil had struggled with illness for most of the week, and with Alexis Sanchez suffering a minor setback to his hamstring injury, the Gunners boss is keen to court caution with his players’ fitness:

“He (Ozil) had a chest infection for the week and was in bed. He had only one training session yesterday and for a guy who could not prepare well he has done very well physically. I’m a bit cautious because we have lost three or four players recently so I have to be cautious a little bit….He (Sanchez) had had a slight one (setback)… he planned to be on the bench tonight but he is so keen he got a little bit of a pain and we didn’t take a gamble. I think he will be back January 10. Christmas period – you can’t count him.”

City’s Away Woes Continue

Save for a 15-minute spell at the end of the encounter – inspired by Yaya Toure’s languid strike – Manchester City looked short of ideas, culminating in their third defeat in five fixtures. Toure has served up attacking returns (two goals and one assist) in three of the last six Gameweeks but looks a far cry from the dominant Fantasy asset that chalked up 20 goals and nine assists during the 2013/14 campaign.

The travails of Manuel Pellegrini’s troops in the final third are denoted by the fact they failed to register a solitary big chance and rank second-bottom for big chances (three) across the last four Gameweeks. Indeed, Kevin De Bruyne’s 27% ownership have suffered in the form of three successive blanks, while the 3,409 early Sergio Aguero adopters were left scratching their heads as the rusty Argentine mustered just two attempts against Arsenal before being withdrawn just after the hour-mark.

After the match, Manuel Pellegrini conceded that Aguero – who played for just the third time since Gameweek 8 last night – is far from full match sharpness right now:

“I think that it was important for Sergio to return to the team. Maybe he needs a few more matches to return to his form but it was important for the team that he played tonight”.

Notwithstanding the scoreline, Bacary Sagna scooped three bonus points by virtue of his assist and defensive efforts. Speaking of the Sky Blues rearguard, they’ve now conceded in five consecutive league clashes and recorded just two shut-outs in the past 12 Gameweeks. It’s safe to say that Vincent Kompany’s stock has risen immeasurably over the past two months, while the Fantasy appeal of Man City’s other rearguard starters has diminished considerably.

Ultimately, Sunderland’s visit this weekend will act at a litmus test to ascertain the extent of Man City’s malaise before they travel to Leicester and Watford – given that they’ve picked up just two points from their last five away fixtures, scoring twice along the way, some Fantasy managers will be thinking twice over loading up on the Etihad outfit right now.

First time I've had 2FT's all season and I have no idea how to use them!

    Butland (Mccarthy*)
    Toby, Bellerin, Moreno, Kolarov*, Richards*
    KDB, Ozil, Mahrez, Alli, Coutinho*
    Kane*, Vardy, Lukaku

    3.3ITB

What would you do here? Coutinho to Ramsey perhaps? Kane to Aguero? Any ideas guys? Really need to start making a move up the ranks.

I'm holding as coutinho and/or firmino need to go first. I do find it quite shocking that I can have coutinho, firmino, silva in mid who all have blanked the last 3 weeks and still put up scores around 70 pts in those weeks. Good thing the majority have coutinho, kdb, deulofeu who haven't fared much better

True, but I've a feeling Walcott's pace will be useful, particularly as Soton will press at home and, Bertrand aside, they're not the most mobile of back lines.

I can see it happening Rover, but doesn't Pellegrini choose Kolarov for the easier games hat city need to attack, and traditionally Clichy when they have to defend? You might be with some luck here

      1. The Bandit
        • 15 Years

    2. Billy Gilmore
      • 13 Years

I think he'll play most games this season. Clichy has been terrible for ages now. Plus, the games aren't even clumped very badly this year.

    3. Ginkapo FPL
      • 14 Years
      10 years, 1 month ago

Can you see Kolarov taking it easy of Christmas day? He's still going to be w@nkered on boxing day, probably still better than Clichy though.

    4. Pasqualinho
      • 16 Years
      10 years, 1 month ago

I don't think so. My theory on Pellegrini over the Xmas period is that he has one set of defenders for the weekend, one for midweek. So I'd say Kolarov plays Boxing Day and Clichy on the 29th.

As usual, the theory needs testing, though.

I remember being burned with Clichy last year, expecting him to get rotated in. It didn't happen, except for one harder game.

Pretty sure Kolarov will play v SUN

Walcott this season is like Aguero for last season for me, as soon as he has any semblance of form I want to bring him in.

Madness? I think that he is a nice little attacking differential to load up on, particularly bearing in mind the fixtures and the Newcastle game which he loves to score in.

Oh right, fair enough. I don't understand why game developers don't include split screen for all FPS games as standard these days. They have lost sight what gamers actually want. I miss the days of Quake, Goldeneye and the first few Halo games.

I'd say that this is the new manager time when Hazard will actually start bringing in the points. (though personally i favour pedro). If you have hung on this long why ditch now?

City seem a bit flat at the moment, so dont jump aboard that gravy train too quick.

Personally, I'd take it slow and keep banking a free transfer for when something big changes. Its a solid attack, and short of fixing that awful bench theres nothing worth a transfer. (And the bench may as well wait for a wildcard whenever that may be)

I think the box to box CM Ramsey will thrive this season. Could've easily got a brace yesterday. Walcott will be more explosive though - and Ox could start ahead of him for one game in this festive period, no?

Forgot about Ox but he's likely to replace campbell rather than walcott.

I can see early withdrawls for walcott, whereas ramsey nailed on for 90 most games. You never know walcott might get a game up front at some point too, although prob unlikely given giroud form.

Won't start every game. When he starts, gets subbed off at 60mins. Very inconsistent and not a very good footballer yet. Poor finisher of the ball.

It's pretty obvious that this "he's due" thing is nonsense. Vardy, Lukaku and Ighalo's consistency shows that form will generally continue. People have been saying Hazard is "due" all season.

Don't get people just because they play for a certain team, get the individuals who will score most points. Bony plays for City, doesn't mean he'll outscore a striker like Ighalo.
