Liverpool’s Martin Skrtel is sidelined with a hamstring injury. Villa are sweating on the fitness of Micah Richards, Papiss Cisse is set for further scans on a groin problem, whilst Claudio Ranieri fails to mention Jamie Vardy’s hamstring niggle in his pre-Gameweek press conference.

Skrtel Sidelined for Reds

Martin Skrtel revealed via Instagram that he’s poised for a six-week spell on the sidelines after being forced off with a hamstring injury at Vicarage Road.

The Scout Says: The Skrtel news adds to Jurgen Klopp’s woes as the Reds look to recover from their 3-0 hammering at Watford. Dejan Lovren is expected to be passed fit for the Boxing Day home encounter against league leaders Leicester, with Mamadou Sakho only returning to action last weekend after recovering from a similar complaint. Alternatively, Klopp could turn to Kolo Toure or Emre Can at centre-half, though considering his side have registered just two clean sheets in nine since his installation, it will be a major surprise if their backline is able to rebuff the advances of Leicester’s effervescent attack. Beyond that head-to-head, back-to-back road clashes against Sunderland and West Ham carry more promise.

Drinkwater still absent for Foxes

According to Claudio Ranieri, Danny Drinkwater is yet to shake off the hamstring knock he picked up against Chelsea and will not feature against Liverpool this Saturday. Aside from that, the Italian boss alluded to a clean bill of health, yet Jamie Vardy was conspicuously absent from the Foxes’ training pictures on Tuesday:

“Drinkwater is getting better but I don’t want to risk him. King played very well. Robert Huth comes back and is ready. Everybody is ok.”

The Scout Says: With Andy King performing admirably in the last two matches, Ranieri is clearly taking no chances with Drinkwater’s fitness as the Foxes look to extend their lead at the summit. The main issue is, of course, Ranieri’s lack of an update on Vardy, who was subbed off late on against Everton due to a slight hamstring knock. With no more updates from Ranieri prior to the trip to Anfield, Vardy’s 57% owners will still be confident in his fitness, given he has a history of playing through the pain barrier – as evidenced earlier this season when he shrugged off a wrist complaint for a number of weeks. With the fixtures coming thick and fast, though, it’s another reminder that we need to have strong benches at this time of year to plan for every eventuality.

Richards remains doubtful for Villa

Remi Garde revealed that Micah Richards – who’s been sidelined for the last three Gameweeks – has a chance of recovering from his knee injury in time to face West Ham United on Boxing Day:

“Micah is a little bit improving. I won’t know until the end of the week. It is early in the week so it’s difficult for me to give more information than that.”

The Scout Says: Ranking joint-second-bottom for clean sheets (two), the Villains have been devoid of Fantasy appeal on the defensive front. Nonetheless, the West Midlands club now embark on an exceptional run of fixtures (WHU, nor, sun, CRY, LEI, wba, whu, NOR) through to Gameweek 25, which may yet prove beneficial to their budget rearguard recruits, with Richards’ security of starts making him arguably the only certainty in Garde’s back-four.

Cisse Set for further scans

Papiss Cisse is set to undergo a second scan on the groin injury he sustained during Newcastle United’s 1-1 draw against Aston Villa. Steve McClaren confirmed that the Senegalese striker is a major doubt for their home tie against Everton on Boxing Day, but had more positive news regarding the rehabilitation of Jamaal Lascelles, Rolando Aarons, Emmanuel Riviere and Steven Taylor:

“We don’t know about Papiss, he’s just had one scan, I think he needs a second opinion on another to gauge the severity. How long? We still don’t know, but he’s a doubt for the weekend. Jamaal (Lascelles) trained this morning for the first time, Rolando (Aarons) will train come the end of the week, and Manu (Riviere) by next week will be training. So it’s a bit of a plus, and Stevie Taylor is coming along really well, so a fortnight into January he could be back training as well.”

The Scout Says: Cisse’s injury has potentially paved the way for Aleksandar Mitrovic to earn a run of starts in the lone-striker berth. The Serbia international fashions attempts at a greater frequency (one every 36.6 minutes) than the likes of Cisse (42.9) and Ayoze Perez (45.7) but ultimately harbours minimal allure when he’s competing with the 6.1-priced Odion Ighalo (12 goals and five assists) in the budget bracket. Although the Magpies’ form has picked up of late (two wins, one draw), they still charted joint-bottom for attempts (29) across the last four Gameweeks and with a tough upcoming schedule (EVE, wba, ars, MUN) to follow, few will be willing to bet on any of their strikers right now, with midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum looking a safer option.

Cameron Struggling for Potters

Mark Hughes admitted that it’s unlikely Geoff Cameron will feature again this calendar year as he contends with a hamstring problem. Meanwhile, Peter Crouch and Stephen Ireland will also sit out the Potters’ Christmas match-ups with their respective hamstring injuries:

“It is probably a little too close to call with Geoff at the moment given the time before the game at the weekend. I would suggest that he is more likely to miss out than to play however, which would mean we may not see him until the New Year. It’s a busy period for us and we certainly won’t be taking any risks with anyone. We have a large squad and we will utilise it if we feel the need to. It’s good to see Crouchy back amongst the group, but he is going to need a full weeks training before we can realistically look at including him.”

The Scout Says: After a number of weeks on the periphery, the 4.4-priced Cameron had started each of the two matches prior to last weekend’s home loss to Palace in central midfield and looked to offer a cheap route into a defence with seven clean sheets in ten. Fantasy managers still keen on Mark Hughes’ rearguard could still turn to Philipp Wollscheid (4.5), though Jack Butland – who’s bagged five clean sheets, seven save points and nine bonus points in his last seven starts – represents the most enticing option amongst the Potters’ defensive regulars. In light of the fact that Manchester United (10) and West Bromwich Albion (11) rank in the bottom three for shots on target across the previous four Gameweeks, Stoke could well harvest further shut-outs in their next trio of league ties (MUN, eve, wba).

Saints Stoppers on the Mend

Ronald Koeman said that Maarten Stekelenburg returned to training at the start of the week and is subsequently in line to start against Arsenal this weekend:

“He’s ok. He did training sessions today and yesterday, and if that continues for the rest of the week then he’s available.”

Similarly, Fraser Forster expressed his delight at returning to training in the wake of a lengthy layoff. The ex-Celtic shot-stopper confirmed he’ll build up his fitness with reserves outings over the next month:

“I’m delighted – obviously a lot of hard work has gone in to get back to this point and I’m thrilled to be out there with the lads. It’ll take a bit of time to get up to speed, but every day I will get better and better, so I’m just buzzing to be out there. I’ve got to take it day-by-day and see how I get on. I think I’ll play some under-21 football in the New Year and we’ll go from there. We’ve been patient the whole way and done everything correctly. That’s got to continue really. It’s important we do the next part properly, not rush and make sure I’m right and ready to come back when I do.”

The Scout Says: Southampton surpassed everyone’s expectations from a defensive perspective last term, conceding the second-fewest goals (33) and chalking up the third-most clean sheets (15). They kicked off this season with three shut-outs in the opening five Gameweeks but have since notched just two in 12 outings. Beyond their home clash against the Gunners, the Saints’ schedule throws up a favourable quartet of match-ups (whu, nor, WAT, wba) that look conducive to clean sheets. On that note, Virgil van Dijk – who’s recorded two goals already and ranks joint-fourth among all defenders for shots on target (five) – presents the most convincing case for investment, though it remains to be seen whether Ronald Koeman can halt his side’s alarming defensive decline

Has anyone seen HDAL here recently? It would help a lot once again if he could ask Vardy's missus if Jamie is fit or not.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Who has won 2015/16 so far - dullards or mavericks?

This was an issue we discussed last night on the Scoutcast.

For the mavericks - they can point to the victory of spotting Leicester and Watford's promise early on and captaincy Mahrez from the off. These mavericks also shunned previous good sources of points from Chelsea and Manchester United and opted for flair picks from promoted or mid table sides

For the dullards- they can point to later in the season where percentage playing is necessary. Those without well owned players like Mahrez or Lukaku face a ratings slide. The pool of players to choose from is also smaller this season which plays into the hands of dullards who hate change. Dullards have also profited from players' consistency. Why swap out the likes of Lukaku or Vardy when they are performing week in week out?

I'd argue that the likes of Mahrez, Vardy, Ozil, Ighalo were maverick to begin with and then became dullard bandwagons.

I haven't owned the latter three at all yet, hence why I am ranked 450k...

In previous seasons the dullards often start well - Chelsea have had good starts so dull picks like Hazard and Ivanovic have done well. Mavericks are then forced to catch up. Those that are dullardinho will always prevail in the end - opting for the safety of a few good reliable scorers mixed with an element of flair.

This season though it has been the mavericks that started well and the dullards have had to catch up.

That's why I think this season truly belongs to the mavericks so far. The season has gone dull - but the mavericks are the ones laughing about that.

Dullards who quickly recognised the Mahrez/Vardy/Ighalo/Butland/Barkley's.

I picked Mahrez from the start, did it get me much? Nope. By GW2 my whole ML had him.

I tried to mix maverick and dullard. Jumping on the Vardy/Kolarov/etc trains, but ignoring the Ighalo (didn't think Watford would score enough goals - oh my), Barkley (couldn't get previous seasons out of my head), and Butland (those fixtures) for players like Mane etc.

If I had just done Barkley for Mane 5/6 GW's ago like I very nearly did I'd probably be well inside the top 5k. Ah well. Instead I've haven't learnt my lesson and have put my maverick faith in Theo (with I imagine the same consequences).

I was doing okay without Leicester boys (didn't own Lukaku as well before last week) But Mahrez has absolutely killed my rank in last 3 gws. From 67k to 419k

Its like he decided enough of Vardy's record now its my time

          • 12 Years
          9 years, 11 months ago

Of course the Dullards always win out in the end, but this has been the mavs innings so far. I think two of the big factors would have been the Dullards' reluctance to double up on Leicester attack and also the reluctance to spend big at the back, when rotating Smalling, Kolarov, Alderweireld and Bellerin seems to have been the big winner defensively.

Going by the established definition of Maverick and Dullard, the Leicester and Watford players would've tumbled from the Maverick list into the Dullard list pretty quickly 😉

It's been the Dawn of the Dullards in terms of the prominence that a "template" team has taken on.

Aside from a few season keepers in previous years, I can't remember a time when teams both in MLs and also on FFS have looked so similar, with just 1/2 variants.

For example, I'd say that a template front 7 has been:
      Ozil Mahrez KdB Barkley
      Lukaku Kane Vardy

And so many people have had it - you've been punished for not having one (for example: I never owned Vardy this year)

I look at my ML and wonder how the **** I'm going to usurp the top 2 players because our squads are SO similar.

My friend is in his first season and he's 60 points ahead in the ML (me 2nd). This week we got exactly the same score and annoyingly I shared with him my plan to captain Mahrez. I agree with you here though, I got Ramsey in order to have ONE differential to him in my front 7. Otherwise, we're exactly the same.

I feel your pain. Lots of people either playing "properly" or in their first seasons outstripping me - I think it's just the captaincy calls that have really screwed me up. I've been too cautious this year.

Really feeling a maverick punt this weekend. Raheem is the early forerunner.

I think I'm gonna go with Mahrez again. As a Liverpool fan, it'll be less painful watching him tear us apart if I'm getting double the points from it. Ighalo was the silver lining during our abysmal display on Sunday.

So many people have realised this though, thanks to FF resources on the net like this site and Triggerlips'.It's unluckily you win it as a dullard now because everyone is doing it. This is the perfect time for a maverick to leap over the huge flock of sheep. We just need the template to break. And it will.

It's a real mix of both, the dullard picks are obviously the template ones like Ozil, Lukaku, Mahrez, Vardy etc.

But I think the key to success is sticking with these template picks and splitting yourself from the those above you by differentials or maverick picks in those 2 or 3 midfield slots and in those 2 or 3 defensive slots that are not template like Ozil and Mahrez

Of course, the mavericks got an early lead, and are stretching out due to their fearless captaincys. I think the playing field is level now but mavericks got the early lead and there is nothing we can do but hope to catch them

maverick picks now the dullard picks ? now were all looking for the next maverick pick, especially if you are chasing, difficult to gain ground with same mid/forwards
lot of the mavericks in my m/leagues played all their chips to try and gain early lead
but now they are panicking as the more patient ones hold on to their chips for the dgw,s
its amazing how players like kun haz etc are now considered maverick picks
think you need a mix, dullard picks, and hopefully 2-3 good maverick picks
      good luck to all

Dullards easily. In the early stages, those who dared to go without Chelsea players did well, but anyone who copied the template as soon as it formed has been guaranteed success.

Mavericks are really suffering since there are no differentials... but Aguero should change that.

I'm not even sure it is Mavericks that have been successful, in my league every year my mates just point chase, this year they point chased very early on with Mahrez,Vardy,Barkley etc they have just kept on giving.
So if anything I would say it is the point chasers that have won 15/16.

The top owned front 7 for the past number of weeks has been:
      Ozil KDB Mahrez Barkley
Vardy Lukaku Kane (recently overtaken by Ighalo)

If you got on each one of them early, you were a maverick.
Ozil - always been inconsistent in previous seasons, Sanchez was tearing it up early, lots of hype on Walcott being a striker
KDB - in a star studded City midfield, a new player to the Premier League, high price point, big risk compared to safer proven options like Silva, Yaya or even Sterling.
Mahrez - had shown promise last season but nobody expected him to fly like he has - probably the least maverick choice to begin with as he would have been a 4th mid st a good cheap price
Barkley - fitful to begin with, Everton had horrific run of fixtures early in the season, Deulofeu caught the eye more, and Lukaku is the proven option as well as focal point of their attack.
Vardy - early on was a good 3rd striker option, but nobody knew how Ranieri would set up or play - and rotation risk from the Tinkerman given Vardy was 1 of 3 or 4 strong striker options for the Foxes.
Lukaku - had a history of trolling, a shocking fixture list to begin with and was overpriced in many eyes to sit alongside a premium pick like Aguero, Costa, etc.
Kane - Spurs weren't consistent at the best of times, and a new manager threw doubt over their style and Kane's involvement. Europa duties were a factor too, plus being priced at 9m put a lot of pressure for him to perform consistently, which he didn't at the start of the season.
Ighalo - ok, had a good record in the Championship, but as a massive gamble to include in your first team, especially with Vardy as "the cheap option".

        Mostly correct.

However, I'd say Deeney and Wilson were the "3rd striker options" touted around FFS. Not sure Vardy and Ighalo were in many starting teams.

My GW1 Mahrez punt did quite well. Also, I punted on Ozil when he was 8.4m with reasonable success. And back when Wilson got injured I took a gamble on Ighalo as my replacement, he's done okay. Dullards keep making my punts template 😉 (My failed punt list is longer 😉 )

      .
Maverick's can beat dullards if they appreciate that certain players are essential, and punt on the correct quality of player, and in moderation. It is certainly FPL Hard Mode though.

The ones who have been agile enough to be both:

Open minded to bandwagons and not afraid to let go of luxury names in the first six weeks, then assured enough to stick to the best performers when many around them flailed about denying the obvious in these past six weeks.

Basically the opposite from how I have played the year. Conservative then flair is like a poker player on tilt trying to win back all his lost chips with one crazy push.

thinking about it maybe this is the season the dullards went maverick and the mavericks became dull.

There are at least two different varieties of dullard.

Some (including many experienced veterans) rely on underlying stats and on players who have done well in previous seasons and may consider new players' successes to be unsustainable. That is often a successful strategy, but it hasn't been working very well so far this season.

Others (including many newcomers) rely more on chasing FPL points from the current season, and that method has worked out much better this time.

Many in the current top thousand are there either because they got lucky with their initial selections or because they played their chips early. But having made their best ever start, some of these may have then decided to take FPL more seriously this season.

It's often the dullardinhos who win in the end, but there's also a place for inspired mavericks like Andy Goddard whose differentials are well thought out and not just risky punts.

...There is also a third variety of dullard - the sheep who mainly just follows the majority opinions as expressed on this site.

Being a dullard can take you quite a long way, but to be really successful you have to find the right balance between dullardity and maverickness.

    Lloirs (Henne)

    Wool Moreno Bellerin (VVD Simpson)

    KDB Alli Mahrez Barkley Ozil

    KANE Lukaku (Vardy) 5.4 ITB

Thinking of Aguero and Giroud for Vardy and Kane -4? Question is do I go for it or leave it as I can do Kane to Aguero once Aguero is firing again. Both are rising, so need to do it now or never, if I do both. Then i'd sub Barkley and Capt Aguero? Cheers!

I've worked out how to overcome the post incorrect captaincy decision. The post selling of the wrong player decision before he goes and get a brace and the post can't quite fit that player into my team and suffer as he gets a brace - again (Ighalo)

    Bet on them.

They may not be in your FPL team, but if you bet on them and they come in no more wrong transfer, wrong captaincy decision, no player in my team blues!

After many years of festive fixtures I can say that over the three games at least one will be a bit of a disaster and if you are lucky you will get two good game weeks. With rotation (and that often actually means 1pt cameos not bench players coming in) there will be a week where everything that can go wrong will go wrong.

What I do now is just look at all three games as one, except that one will be poor and hope that over the trio I can get a good average.

In previous years I set the bar at 50 for acceptable score, 60 for a good score. These days though if the high owned players do well I'd probably say that 60 a week average (so 180 over the three games) is acceptable, while 200 plus over the three would be fantastic.

Considering the freak results and Form crushing fixtures this season maybe that 3 game average will even be higher than 60.

Jonty's who do you think the biggest differential in defence is for the festive period ? There's absolutely no point going with the arsenal fullbacks and Toby A if there ownership is so high amid good fixtures. As defence seems the only way to climb up the ranks who are we looking at ? Scoutcast you guys pointed out Cresswell and A.Williams, anyone else ?

We ll probably get 70 pts this game week and get a red arrow *Sigh*

In terms of clean sheets I think West Ham and Swansea are good diffs.

In terms of that little something extra I'd consider Sagna - if Kompany is back and Zabaleta is out - that's a perfect storm of clean sheet, bonus, nailed on ness and assist potential.

Also old stagers like Ivanovic and Baines for those who fancy a punt.
