The concept of a player being fixture proof in Fantasy football is a much discussed topic around these parts. Wayne Rooney put forward a strong case a few gameweeks back, defying United’s tricky opening to the season with a points tally that left all but Sergio Aguero in his wake. Today, Robin Van Persie perhaps presented even stronger evidence that, when a player has talent and form, no opposition can stand in their way.

Van Persie is certainly a force of nature right now. Seven goals in his last three games have propelled him to the top of every Fantasy manager’s most wanted list. The Dutchman, along with Rooney and Aguero, have all enjoyed devastating spells of form this season. Any Fantasy manager who has failed to catch at least one of them, surely finds themselves floundering.

Ironically, it’s Wayne Rooney who has been hugely overshadowed by Van Persie’s recent returns. Today at Goodison, Rooney dropped alarmingly deep, as Alex Ferguson charged Danny Welback and Javier Hernandez to push on. In Fantasy terms, certainly as far as our own ICT Index is concerned, Rooney suffered his least effective 90 minutes of the season – the numbers are there – our Members can see for themselves.

Van Persie meanwhile, made a mockery of the fixture list which told us that a trip to Chelsea would pose him problems; that perhaps he couldn’t maintain his recent form at Stamford Bridge. Friday night’s decision to go with Van Persie over Sergio Aguero in the Scout Picks wasn’t taken lightly. We suspected that the Chelsea defence would be unable to keep the Dutchman at bay. Nobody could have predicted the havoc he would cause, the delicious end product he would deliver.

In three games, Van Persie has returned 36 Fantasy Premier League points – a tally that will surely increase with bonus points on Monday and perhaps the award of an assist for Theo Walcott’s goal. In contrast, Rooney has produced 5 points over the same three gameweeks. When you throw in the captaincy, that’s a big swing and painful reading for those who held Rooney with faith that his undoubted talent and early season form would see him through.

Conveniently, then, that takes us full circle. While Van Persie has done so much today to prove the theory that, with class and form, the opposition is irrelevant, Rooney’s recent returns present strong evidence of the contrary. The matches against Liverpool, City and Everton looked tough for Rooney- five points is certainly proof of that. Another twist in what is rapidly becoming a fascinating Fantasy season.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    74 points for me before bonus, and this was a week in which I thought I'd do average, wheras I planned on next week being a great week with my big 3 strikers all at home. Crazy crazy FPL season.

    Had:
    Vorm 3
    Rangel 7
    Kompany -1
    Enrique 6
    B Johnson 7
    Sinclair 7
    Moses 2
    Mata (c) 20
    RVP 13
    Rooney 2
    Suarez 8

    Had Swansea kept a cleanie, and Kompany not been sent off, I reckon I'd have been looking at Team of the Week territory!

        I think Mata is a class act, I'm confident that Arsenal can't defend, and I thought Mata was due a goal tbh. Plus I don't have any Man City or Spurs attacking options. My vice was Rooney, and I even considered Kompany captain for an almost certain 12 points, so I got fairly lucky.

        I'm really worried about Rooney playing so deep - it's his least favourite position.

        I don't know if the boss has had a word or it's Roon himself but there's suddenly something wrong.

        The Man U fixture list looks tasty but so does Arsenal's and I have Man U cover still.

        I bought Arteta but his deep positional play has gone against him too ( except the assist today from a 5 goal fest) so he went to the bin.

        Nani looks good for a game or 2 then goes off the boil or gets rotated - Rooney SHOULD be a season keeper but I'm doubting it now...

          Similar... I mean, I thought he was a keeper because he's pretty much the only nailed on starter for the 'big' teams (other than Silva, I guess) but glad I got rid of him now. Can only see him being played deep now anyway with Welbeck/Chico so he should be a mid really as someone else said.

    Oh RVP you tease. Decided to stick with Rooney for one more week...but no longer.
    Roon -> RVP

    Or

    Suarez -> RVP,

    Issue with second is then have to downgrade elsewhere:

    Bos to a 4.1er leaving a fairly weak defence of Enrique, Simpson, N.Taylor, Walker and A.N.Other.

    Ship out Mata/VdV/Silva for a 6-7m mid - suppose I could bring in Sinclair...

    RVP = Legend

    Fail on nasri as skipper at least he stated so positive sign for future games

    RVP i would never have captained him for this game on paper it was a tough one and so i have no regrets as i never even considered him for this week.

    Next week is a different story but 16 points after bonuses isnt a bad return from RVP

    i posted yesterday how my last 3 transfers out had been RVP, Brunt and Dzeko, which immediately preceded said transfer-out scoring loads of points. My 3 transfers in scored an assist between them. due to this disasterous run, i'd decided to make no transfers this week, but then got caught up in theVDW bandwagon, and as i misguidedly wanted to hold onto nani, i took a hit and sacrifced suarez, who of course goes and gets 2 assists and probably bps. roll on VDW getting rested tomorrow.

    am i unlucky or just an omnishambles?

      Well Beunt and Dzeko were probably for good reasons, so unlucky. Bit silly to lose the others, though. They've been solid season-long picks for a while (says the man with Rooney instead of RVP)

      I think no. If I was asked Silva deserved the 3 BP, but with the new system A.J. seems to get the 3 BP ala MIlner. Dzeko and Kolarov also has outside chance to have some BP

    How did Ramsey only end up with 2 points today? Best player on the pitch behind RVP it's a travesty he didn't get anything and certainly won't get bonus.

    Another thing I noticed today is how well Koscielney played, really strong performance in amongst the pile of cack that is the rest of the Arsenal defence. Santos looks like a truly awful defender and Mertesacker doesn't look like he can cut it in the PL.

      Mertesacker is a beast in FIFA 12 though so it's not all bad. Shame it doesn't really translate to real life performances.

      Ramsey seems like the Arsenal man to have right now though.

      miss out on points, knee jerk and sell on basis of one game week, without lookin ahead.
      i dont have nani, but he surely will be a valuable player over the season.

      just think of the 8 pointers ppl are going to take to work rvp into their team

          Totally deprived of any service, plus up against possibly the best natural defender in the league - Koscielny. Would have scored twice in the first ten minutes if Sturridge and Cole haven't played horrendous passes when through.

    At least I got Bradley Johnson in though. 8) Hoping for him to be awarded the assist for the final goal too, although having watched a clip of the penalty, it's pretty unclear.

        ssshhhhh... I don't think it's an assist either, I suspect that Morison gets the last touch before the N'Zonzi handball. But that isn't going to stop me trying to claim it! Email time!!

        Not sure who I'm going to take out next, possibly Bosingwa and Petrov.
