From Tanzania to Bhutan, 64 teams from around the world entered the FIFFSA 5-A-Side World Cup dreaming of glory. For half of them the dream is over, but the other half will be packing their suitcases ready for a virtual trip to Thailand for the finals.

Final Week of Qualifying

The final round of qualification began with one place or more in the finals up for grabs in all the groups except AFC/OFC A and CAF. Tahiti claimed top spot in AFC/OFC A with a narrow win over Japan and Djibouti beat Zimbabwe to lock up first place in CAF. They will be joined in the finals by Malaysia, Indonesia, India, Egypt, Zambia and the Seychelles.

Columbia’s win over Bolivia was enough to not only claim the remaining qualification place in CONMEBOL, but also propel them up to second in the group topped by Argentina. Bolivia could be the unluckiest team in qualifying. They were the fifth highest scoring team in the whole qualification process, but ended up finishing seventh out of eight in their group. In a last gasp bid for qualification Bolivia unleashed a wildcard, a bench boost and triple captain in the final round. Unfortunately for them the chosen triple captain, Riyad Mahrez, returned just one point before the armband bonus was added. Chile went out in style scoring 371 against a Peru side led from the front by captain BibelNissen, whose 96 was the highest score among all competing players this week.

Russia’s wolves_simmo scored 92 points, but luckily for Portugal he was on the bench and the Portuguese won by six points to cement their position at head of UEFA B. There was a six-way fight beneath them for the three remaining qualification spots going into the final games and Finland, Germany, Bosnia and Poland all finished with 12 qualification points. Sadly for Poland their 2027 FPL points were not enough and they won’t be going to Thailand – unlike 12 teams who scored fewer FPL points in qualification.

UEFA A and UEFA C were wide open going into the final round, with the Republic of Ireland the only one of the 16 teams unable to qualify. Wales recorded a monster score of 404 – the highest by any team this week – to secure first place in UEFA A. They will be joined by Northern Ireland, Montenegro and Norway, who qualified despite losing to France. Norway’s 1958 FPL points was the second lowest of a team to qualify and the fifty-eighth lowest overall. Iceland, who came 60 out 64 teams for FPL points scored in qualification, made it through despite losing their final match to Italy, who topped UEFA C. They will be joined in the finals by Belgium and Israel – the latter was one of only two to make it through with fewer than four wins.

Sri Lanka, who had lost their opening four games, qualified with just three wins in AFC/OFC B. They ended up tied on nine qualification points with Thailand, the Soloman Islands and Iran but went through by virtue of FPL points scored. Iran will be kicking themselves for benching Holy See’s 62 points given they lost their final match against Singapore by just two points. New Caledonia topped the group and they will head to the finals with Australia and Singapore.

There was a five-way fight for the remaining two spots in the CONCACAF group, but Jamaica and Mexico tallied healthy scores of 371 and 331 respectively to book their place in the finals with Costa Rica and Cuba.

The final qualification group standings can be found in the qualification tables spreadsheet.

Our congratulations go to all 32 teams that qualified and our commiserations to the 32 that didn’t – you have our thanks too for your involvement in the competition and for helping to make it a success so far.

A special mention must go to San Marino, North Korea and Scotland for their lively banter and press conferences. San Marino went out with another press conference win as their rendition of We’ll be Marinos (to the tune of David Bowie’s Heroes) narrowly beat Poland’s Akon-inspired effort. All those nations that failed to qualify are most welcome to bring their supporters along to add to the atmosphere in Thailand!

Finals Preview

Those that are making the virtual trip to the finals in Thailand will find out who they face when the draw is made for the pool stages this week. The teams have been seeded according to their finishing position in their qualifying group, so Pot 1 will be made up of the teams that won their qualifying group, Pot 2 of the teams that came second, Pot 3 of those who that came third and Pot 4 of those who came fourth. There will be eight pools of four teams with one team drawn from each pot. No team will be able to face a pool match against a qualification opponent.

The pots will be as follows:
Pot 1: Argentina, Costa Rica, Tahiti, New Caledonia, Wales, Portugal, Italy, Djibouti
Pot 2: Colombia, Cuba, Indonesia, Singapore, Northern Ireland, Finland, Belgium, Egypt
Pot 3: Uruguay, Jamaica, Malaysia, Australia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Iceland, Zambia
Pot 4: Peru, Mexico, India, Sri Lanka, Norway, Germany, Israel, the Seychelles

The draw will take place in the comments section of this article. Please keep an eye on the comments for details of when it will be held.

Pool matches will begin immediately, in Gameweek 23, with the top seeds in each pool playing the second seeds, and the third seeds facing the fourth seeds. The full match schedule will be published once the draw has been made.

Here here. Balders, I think we should should have a fan zone at the tournament with a special honour for the country - finalist or not - that contributes most to the atmosphere.

You could actually do something for the players who have been eliminated. Maybe let each team add an extra player to their contingent. Of course these players should be picked from the players ousted.

    Get Thai'd you're talking to a tourist
Whose every move's among the purest

    ***Official Tahiti World Cup Song***

“Tahiti” (to the tune of “She Loves You” by The Beatles”)

    Tahiti, yeah, yeah, yeah
    Tahiti, yeah, yeah, yeah
    Tahiti, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

    People said “no chance”
When they saw who we would play
    In qualification
We were wrote off straight away
    We shout “Tahiti”
Now you know that we ain’t bad
    Shout “Tahiti”
Tell your mum and tell your dad

With five wins in a row
    Others lost their mind
    Attempts to be ignored
    But we won’t be denied
    We shout “Tahiti”
    We live the Pacific dream
    Shout “Tahiti”
    What a fantastic team, ooh

    Tahiti, yeah, yeah, yeah
    Tahiti, yeah, yeah, yeah
    With a team like ours
    In Thailand we’ll be rad

    Adastidar and Jarv
    Sporting and TJ
And Viggy – what a side
    With Memphis showing the way
    We shout “Tahiti”
We’re gonna bring home the cup
    Shout “Tahiti”
All the doubters can shut up, ooh

    Tahiti, yeah, yeah, yeah
    Tahiti, yeah, yeah, yeah
    With a team like ours
    Thailand we’ll drive you mad
    With a team like ours
    Thailand, we won’t be sad
    With a team like ours
    In Thailand we’ll be rad
    Yeah, yeah, yeah
    Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

    *********THE LAST ESCAPE*********

    ~A hotel, somewhere in Thailand~

The six Montengrins stared at the corpse laden floor of their hotel room. They opened it only a little fearing a trap. Amidst the gore of Team USA, and the stench of the Cayman Islands, was a blood-stained envelope with ‘Montenegro’ scribbled carelessly across it. The urgency to grab it and escape immediately flooded their minds. The first few steps were slow and painful but soon the pace quickened. Then, in horror, the envelope fell from their hands. Staring at them was their nightmare made real. It was the Mexican kingpin EunuchJelly, holding a half-empty whisky bottle in his left hand and an 8mm pistol in his right. One by one, Sjaugen, Zombie, Raddy, and 12thamigo all appeared, each with a deadly smirk on their face.

-So you think you can screw us over eh? EJ spoke.

    - We-we’re sorry, we just thought we had more time, y-you know? One of the Montenegrins fumbled.

The others hid behind the one who dared speak. EJ couldn’t help but laugh to himself.

-This what we’re up against, ese? Zombie gestured to Raddy with his knife.

-We’ll make light work of these pendejos. Raddy answered.

Sjaugen approached the group of Montenegrins slowly. Steadying himself as best as he could, the Montenegrin who had found the courage to speak attempted to escape. Something was wrong though. His body felt heavier as fear gripped his legs. The room appeared to spin and light-headedness struck him. Suddenly, his mates bolted for the door, leaving him behind.

-Look like it’s just you then, ese. Sjaugen said, gripping the throat of the Montenegrin left behind.

The only thing that felt important now was getting out. In one swift movement, the Montengrin slapped away Sjaugen’s arm and turned for the door. Sjaugen lifted his revolver and aimed for the legs of the escapee.

    -Leave him! EJ shouted.

-You gonna let the rat get away, ese? Sjaugen answered, his eyes still focused on the Montenegrin stumbling away.

-The boss said he’ll tell us when it’s time. Until then, we do nothing. 12thamigo explained.

-That’s right. Daas wouldn’t be too happy if we carried out the plan without him. We’ll meet those Monte’s again, and the next time, they won’t escape.

Hi guys, the full fixture list for the FIFFSA World Cup is now out, including the brackets for the knockout stages here: https://goo.gl/eAWyRk

One thing I would like to know from a design perspective is how much of each of the pages can you see when opening the spreadsheet and what size screen does your device have?

Wahey! The Seychelles seems to have every slot in the Knouckout [sic] stage!

I can see one column of groups and one column of knockout fixtures in the spreadsheet via my phone.

This is much better for mobile devices. Couldn't see more than a row or two of cells of the previous spreadsheet on my iPhone but can see each group and all their fixtures in full on this one.

      Great improvement!

Also does this mean that FPL points scored so far in the tournament are being written off?

Makes sense I guess but annoying for those of us with high scores!

    Part 2

The evil alien overlord sat in his chair, albeit one a lot more uncomfortable than he was accustomed to, and waited for his underling to fetch him news on what would surely be the humans failed attempt at survival. He felt quite smug, not quite as smug as his friend Doug but getting there. He did miss his friend Doug and wondered how he always managed to be so smug, what an enviable ability to have he thought. He wished he could kill these pesky humans but orders were orders. It had been like this for eons before his existence and will be like it for eons after. Before a race can be given interstellar travel and all the rewards that come with it they must show that they have the ability to work together to overcome all odds. If not they must be put down like a rabid dog.

His underling came bounding up to him, hair floppy and curly,,, tongue hanging out and moving side to side while he panted heavily.

‘Master G’ mini G said, ‘16 teams survive still while 16 have perished’.

The master took the report from him and whilst he read it said, ‘what is that singing I can constantly hear?’
‘It’s the humans sir, one team wasn't deemed good enough for the quest,,, San Marino,, but they won’t stop singing!’ he replied.
‘I can’t wait to get off this planet’

India, Wales Northern Ireland, Norway, Montenegro

ODIKOSTAR, Columba, Mahrez is the new Ramsey and Jonjo Shall We huddled together, out of earshot of the excluded team captain, Athletic Timbo.

‘We’ve done well convincing the welsh to come on the wild goose chase to the jungles of Borneo, now we need to find out how to kill them off and the alien master will reward us with riches beyond our dreams and our very own planets to rule!’ whispered Columba.

    ‘I know’ chuckled ODIKOSTAR, why don’t we…………’

What sound like mosquitos when they get close to your head filled the air for what could of been no more than 30 seconds.

‘Status report’ Athletico Timbo spoke calmly into his walkie talkie.

‘All dead, kill shots to the head’ Evs voice came back from the other end.

    ‘Confirmation’ Athletico Timbo asked?

‘Confirmed’ came Jonty’s voice from behind him.

‘Now can we actually get on with our task of finding the cure boss? Green Windmill asked?

‘Yes, onto Italy it is’ came the response.

    Columbia

‘Are we there yet? MrReilly asked in a rather whiny voice.

‘Hush your gums’ ayew Serious responded, ‘we’ll get there when we get there’

With that tort response the Colombian team carried on over the vast ocean towards their destination, Manchester.

    Seychelles

‘Ok men, the fate of the world rests with us’ Blue Lion said in his usual authoritative voice.

‘We’ll split up, half of us will head off to what seem like the likely place for a cure, Italy, and the other half will go to Manchester to see if our Balders calculations are true and the source does originate from there. Now who wants the cure, who wants the source, both are equally as dangerous’

Cheese stepped up to the plate first, with his usual bravery he calmly stated.
‘I’ll take my Yolk Folk and Diva to Italy, you guys go to Manchester’

Blue Lion nodded, but then he got distracted by Balders, his usual calm demeanor disappearing before his eyes. Balders started jumping up and down and obviously excited, in more ways than one, started pointing to the horizon.

‘Look’ he said, with all the excitement you’d normally associate with a young boy who has seen candy floss for the first time. ‘It’s Aguero, i’m such a fan!’ then he turned his head and impossibly started to get even more excited.

‘Look’ he said again while pointing in a different direction. ‘It’s YaYa’ this time his face was going red and he was drooling at the prospects.

‘Calm down’ Blue Lion said, with a hint of worry in his voice. ‘We know you’re a fanboy but we have a task at hand’. He wondered if this was some alien plot to disrupt his team from their task.

‘Look, look’ Balders said, almost unable to speak he was that excited. ‘It’s Ramsey, I’m such a fa………..’

Unable to complete his last statement Balders promptly exploded, kill his entire team. The only survivor being Cheeseoids sheep.

Bloody hell, the sheep thought. THe aliens have done it, they’ve killed the unkillable.

    Uruguay, Italy

The Uruguayans had finally reached Italy and their old friends, the italians.

‘We lost our captain’ Oghash said,, whilst visibly holding back the tears, it’s been a rough trip. We’ve all got the virus, we won‘t survive’ he said whilst addressing the Italian captain, Gooner97.

‘Let me debrief you. We have a definite location for the cure for this disease, you’ll have to go on alone to find it, but before I do’ he turned to his men and said ‘You know what I have to do, all good men down to the last one of you. This is for humanity. You’ve made me proud’ He then proceeded to put a bullet in the head of the rest of the Uruguay team. he then leaned over to Gooner97 and started whispering in his ear the vital location and details of the cure.

    Belgium

Eden Hazardous knew he was a beaten man. His team long since dead, his belief that the source could be found in the jungle of madagascar waning. The only thing making him continue was his will and not wanting to give up on hope. He raised his machete to cut yet another branch in front of him when a coconut fell from a tree, straight on his head and killed him outright.

    Cuba, Jamaica, Mexico, Tahiti

‘Pass me a bit more of Dass will you’, Jaffalicious said trying to hide a chuckle.

‘Why is Mexican food so spicy?’ ateriser12 said with a hit or sarcasm.

It was a quiet, cold night in the Sahara desert. The cuban, jamaican and tahiti teams sat round a bonfire eating the dead, cooked flesh of the mexican team. Their long journey only half way done into the Sahara. Will they succeed?

    Argentina, Portugal

Lebron looked suspiciously at his fellow captain from Portugal, as he’d heard the rumours all too well what happens when teams combine.

‘Why should we let you join us?’ He said to Jose's Magic Omelette
‘We have a credible source if intel that says the cure can be found in Manchester, two teams are better than 1.’

Lebron replied, ‘We have intel that says the source can be found in Manchester. You can join us but one wrong move and we won’t hesitate to put you down’

Jose simply nodded in agreement, he knew he had no intention of betraying the Argentinians, all he wanted was to complete his mission and get home to his favourite dog, Roger the Dachshund.

With that 8 teams perished in their quest to save humanity and 8 teams survived. Part 3 to follow tomorrow in which only 4 teams can continue, who do you want to continue and why? Who will find the cure, who will find the source?

Last time I was in Columbia everywhere I saw people walking around barefoot. I thought it was because they couldn't afford shoes. I sympathized the poor people.

Later I learned that an IQ of at least 2 is required to wear flip-flops. That explains why everyone is barefoot there.

I now sympathize the poor fools.

I think this should have been the rules for the whole tournament - there are going to be tears when a team has worked their butts off to get to the latter stages only to be knocked out purely because of chips. I know I'm going to get the same "it's the same for everyone" and "it brings an extra dimension" comments, but this is a timebomb waiting to explode.

Well i am planning to use my chips when i feel its best to use them as an individual (dgw, plum fixtures etc), and if it happens to coincide with a fiffsa gw which helps my country's team, then it is what it is.

It would have been very hard to include/enforce such rules for the fiffsa tourney.

Obviously you can't ban individuals from playing chips (that would be nuts), but it's not difficult to manually adjust the scores to what they would be if the chips weren't used.

The DGW example is a good point (if the DGW happens) - that FIFFSA fixture is going to be as much as how many individuals in a team have opted to use a chip individually that week as it is how good their teams are. Just seems wrong to me, but just my personal opinion 🙂

That's a noble idea mate, I like it. However, I don't tell the guys how to run their teams. I'm just the captain and my job is to field the best 5 I think we have. I let the managers decide how they want to manage their teams because everyone has their own FPL goals (mini leagues, overall, etc.) and this tourney is just some fun on the way. They send me their teams and I decide whom to bench.

So, I can't tell them when to or not to play the chips. We had one fella play the bench boost last week, and we had a couple already use their second WC. All their decisions. Whether their decisions were swayed by this tourney is something you have to ask them.

Also, there is the matters of DGWs. Rest assured, I will play one of my chips when it happens, and I'm sure others will also. Again, it is because I want to win my mini league and break in to the 10k. It would be nice to go far in this tourney but we are not going to make it our primary goal. If it happens along the way then it happens.

      Cheers.

@the committee - thanks once again for all of your efforts in putting this together and running the whole thing - it's really appreciated and has been fun to be a part of.

As manager of Barbados I take full responsibility for the lack of qualification from the group stages. An investigation has already been launched into the poor management of the team and lack of organisation for team submissions.

I will be retiring from 5-a-side management and would like to thank, The Sarjeant, Doolittle, Kings of Lyon, D1sable and Beavis for their time and efforts. One more game and we would have had them!

Thanks Andy. You have been a great manager and I think that we were ridiculously unlucky not to qualify

If it makes you feel any better you helped us qualify by beating USA 😀

On behalf of team Thailand I want to first thank the fantastic and ever-present organizing committee of FIFFSA. They have worked very hard and have earned their right to relax on the wonderful beaches of Thailand (for a while).

Secondly, wish everyone a great finals and a "happy ending". We are in Thailand after all. We will be watching and cheering from the sidelines and helping create the atmosphere.

Unfortunately team Thailand ended 5th in the group and lost to Lanka on points scored. It was a thrilling final weekend. We went into the final day in 4th position. A Watford 0-2 win vs Swansea would have ensured qualification but it was Swansea 1-0, and team Lanka unleashed their 4 Ashley Williams for a fine result.

It was great fun with fab teammates - Sinik, Rusty Nail, LouieM97, Tets McGee and Scientist Prime.

    Best,
    Jigger and Pony, Thailand Captain.

It was a nail biting weekend!! Thank you for making it a real spectacle. Sorry you guys didn't make it.

Dont get me wrong, we are not sorry we took the final spot. I am sorry you didnt make it in the top four if that makes sense, especially since you're the home side!!
