Leicester boss Claudio Ranieri raided the January transfer market for the second time last week by snapping up Ghana international Daniel Amartey from FC Copenhagen. The versatile 21-year-old arrives at the King Power on a four-and-a-half year contract and revealed that the Foxes have been after his signature for some time:

“It’s a great pleasure to join Leicester City. I know the Club have been interested in signing me for some time and that was a big part of my decision to come here. All over Europe, people are talking about Leicester City and how well the Club is doing in the Premier League. The team plays exciting, attacking football and I’m looking forward to being part of it.”

The History

Amartey started his career at Ghana lower league outfit International Allies, where he was spotted as a sixteen-year-old by Magnus Pehrsson, who was on a scouting trip in Africa ahead of his installation to the hotseat at Swedish club Djurgardens IF.

After inviting the player to train in Sweden for three months, Pehrsson secured the rights for Amartey’s signature from the day he turned 18. Having started off in the youth set-up, the all-action Amartey quickly found his way into the Djurgardens first-team, where he was utilised as a centre-half and central midfielder over the course of two seasons, producing just a single assist over 40 appearances in all competitions. After attracting interest from Liverpool, Amartey’s second year in Sweden was curtailed by a wrist injury which restricted him to just 11 league matches.

In the summer of 2014, the Ghanaian made his way to FC Copenhagen for a fee of €2.5m. He was mainly fielded as a central midfielder during his time in Denmark, though showed his adaptability by occasionally filling in at centre-half and right-back. During his first season, Amartey helped the club secure the Danish Cup and finish second in the Alka Superligaen, and leaves this year with Copenhagen sitting at the summit. Over the course of 63 appearances in all competitions, he produced six goals and three assists.

On the international stage, he made his debut for Ghana last year and has since turned out six times, helping his country finish runners-up in the 2015 African Cup of Nations.

The Prospects

Amartey’s arrival bolsters the Foxes options at a time when – prior to yesterday’s home win over Stoke – Ranieri’s side had started to stutter.

Nonetheless, with N’Golo Kante and Danny Drinkwater – who bagged a goal and assist against the Potters – firmly established as Ranieri’s preferred options in the centre of the park, Amartey is likely to be eased into the Foxes first-team set-up. The new boy certainly possesses the attributes than would be perfect for Leicester’s counter-attacking tactics under the Italian, boasting searing pace and endless energy that should quickly see him move up the back-up pecking order ahead of the likes of Andy King and Gokhan Inler.

In central defence, Robert Huth and Wes Morgan look nailed-on in a backline that’s conceded just a single goal in the last five Gameweeks, whilst it seems unlikely that Ranieri would utilise the new boy at right-back at the expense of Danny Simpson, given that he’s impressed so much in the centre of the park. Arguably, though, this could be his quickest route into the Foxes’ first-team, offering Leicester a physical, very mobile presence behind Riyad Mahrez on the right flank.

As we mentioned in the Demarai Gray Scout Report, though, Ranieri has been a little reluctant to instantly alter his first-team – the likes of Christian Fuchs, for example, failed to start in the league until Gameweek 8 before playing all but one of the Foxes’ subsequent fixtures.

With his side now back at the summit, Ranieri – who has mainly resisted his previous penchant for tinkering since arriving at the King Power – is likely to court further caution over the run in, ensuring that Amartey (who has yet to be added to the Fantasy Premier League game) remains a peripheral figure for now. It’s more likely that he could be one for the following campaign, once Ranieri has worked out where he fits best into his first-team plans.

So if GW25 is a potential DGW and you were saving your WC to play the week before the DGW in order to bench boost on the DGW, then you'd have to play your WC this week due to the inability of playing both chips in the one week............while not knowing if in fact there will actually be a f$%^in DGW in week 25 🙁

I'm confused and prob confused everyone with this post haha 😉

Ya should give enough time to decide. Thinking that the first DGW might be better to Triple Captain if City have a DGW though so might hold my WC and see.

If you take it in GW38, you need an instant product or you are throwing points away. Go back one week etc.

        2. dmhomag
          • 11 Years
          9 years, 10 months ago

          Two reasons.

          1. Your new player has fewer GW left to score points to make up the -4.

          2. Hits taken at the start of the season (assuming losing a faller for a riser) is worth say 0.1m. Assuming 2000 points target or 20 points per 0.1m, or 20/38 per week, Moneyball says the 0.1m becomes less and less valuable with each passing GW.

    Bench one:

    A) Walker (nor)
    B) Williams (wba)
    C) Dawson (SWA)
    D) Bellerin (SOU)

Already playing Lloris if that makes a difference.

Guess "not being mean" was kinda mean...

What I meant was that there are weeks when captaincy fails are unexpected. Luck of the draw. This week choosing (cold) Lukaku due to a kinder fixture over red hot Aguero is not a good choice.

              1. Shifty
                • 12 Years
                9 years, 10 months ago

Well, how I saw it in my brain was

Lukaku was playing for a team that couldn't defend and had to attack attack attack - while he's been cold, Everton as a team have been alright attacking wise. Watched the Swansea MNF football game and they were all over the place defensively. Fancied Lukaku's chances @ home against them.

Obviously it wasn't an easy pick between Lukaku and Aguero...but I did fancy West Ham to give City a good game and be very resolute throughout the game. Result wise, it proved to be true. Not sure if you watched the game but WHU pretty much dominated City and Aguero, while clinical, was very much surpressed and cut a frustrated figure most of the game.

So before you come around and waving your Kun(c) around with hindsight and all, I suggest you consider your choice of words as we're all serious players here who do put serious thought into captain choices.

Has captain hindsight changed his name and grav?

I had the armband on Lukaku all week and only changed it to Kun last minute. Lukaku had scored or assisted in all of Everton's last six home games.

To be fair Lukaku had several good chances. Was hiding behind the couch a bit. Guess having chances and not scoring is the very definition of cold.

Higher ceiling and lower floor with Triple (C).. Aguero on a that with 2 solid fixtures would be absolutely terrifying if a ML rival did it and i didn't.

All depends how strong your bench is.

Depends on the squad. In previous seasons you'd always be in between benching a Sanchez / Hazard or playing a half decent player from a middling DGW team. So bench boost is probably better. But there'll almost certainly be more than one DGW so the Triple (c) is obviously better used in the week that has 2 or 4 teams with double fixtures.

    4. Shifty

Bench boost assuming it's stacked with DGW players.

But a triple captain definitely has the potential for greater scores. The thing is, for a big DGW many are going to be captaining the same player so you essentially just get 1x that score more.

However, personally having bench full of cheap DGW players might be pointless anyway so some money has to be diverted to the bench. The downside after using a WC pre-DGW and then BB during DGW...is probably too much $ on the bench thereafter.

Bench boost could be a great DGW37 play. 15 DGWers...

GW38 would be ugly but points in the bag.

Palace is a fixture you hope your forward have lined up. Chelsea concede. Spurs are frugal but he scored against them already this season i think. CS are impossible to predict it's all about form... and Ighalo and Watford are lacking that - Newcastle doesn't count for crap, even United banged in a bunch against them

Here's an interesting question. We're all planning on triple captaining Aguero when he gets a DGW, but what about bench boost? You're arguably granted more points from a bench boost than you are in a triple captaincy. If a lot of your players have a good fixture, would you really bench some and bank on one player doing well?

I've been on the triple captain boat for a while, but now I'm reconsidering...

So Myhill is extremely close to a drop in price and I should probably sell. Wouldn't mind getting Foster as he rotates quite well with Gomes and I have the exact amount of cash (4.9m). However, ideally I know its best to wait for DGW news after this coming weekend but by doing so I'll be priced out of a move for Foster (could be a blessing in disguise). So as of this moment, who are the GKers at 4.9m that might get a DGW at some point, I know its almost impossible to know who at this stage but maybe somebody out there has some idea. Would appreciate some advice, thanks.

That's the missing 0.1m issue that afflicts us regardless of TV. We always want the 0.1m better player we can't have.

I suggest that the DGW play is still more important. Elliot could be DGW gold.

Newcastle are out of the FA cup so I'm not as convinced. A DGW gold player would be a player from a team that is still in the FA cup and league cup. Mignolet registers on the radar in which case but as I already have Moreno I'm reluctant to double up on that atrocious defence.

With Aguero back, Lukaku Kane Ozil KDB etc Firmino is not a nice price point to try to get in.

8m is rough. I've been trying to upgrade Mahrez to Payet/Firmino. Need 2-3 transfers.

Also means no WC to sort out the DGW mess.

    Butland, hennessey

    Pva / Toby / bellerin / nyom / fonte

    Ozil / firmino / Payet / wij / alli

    Kun / Kane / ighalo

    Should I WC this?

Wanna get Sanchez, hart, Rooney, baines, silva or wait for a bit?

Give Sanchez another game imo. Reckon SOT could be a tough one

How did Sanchez look last night?

What would you guys do with this lot:

    Butland Hennessey
    Dawson Zouma Jags Bertrand Souare
    Ozil Ramsey Marhez Payet Gosling
    Kane Ighalo Aguero

    1FT / 3.4m ITB

Ramsey needs to go but saving FT should be useful before DGW news.

    What do you reckon?

Ramsey to Silva could tempt me, after double news of course. Ramsey to Sanchez too

Before yesterday's matches, i saw who got the highest points this gameweek. He got 116. But made 30 transfers or something and got -112.. So net total 4 points this week. Absolutely no words. A team has only 15 players and he made 30 or so transfers in one week alone

Don't think overall rank was their focus.

Just did some calculations, I was actually better of saving my transfer last GW then bringing in Firmino. Lucky I saved my transfer 😎

      What were the calculations?

I was about to pull the trigger on:

        Kdb + Ighalo ----> Firmino + Lukaku (C) -4

Since I didn't have Lukaku I went with Aguero (C).

If I did the moves and captained Aguero I would have only made 2 points profit anyway.
