Tracking The Fantasy Football Veterans- Gameweek 23

Another week is behind us and yet again Sergio Aguero ensured the veterans’ long march up the rankings continues. For the first time this season the average overall rank of this group of 34 Hall of Fame leaders, FFScout moderators and contributors and former Fantasy Premier League winners is now inside the top 100,000. It is no wonder the veterans have plenty to smile about at as they prepare for Gameweek 24. 

TRANSFERS

After averaging 0.68 transfer per team last week, the veterans were more active in Gameweek 23, averaging 1.03 transfer per team.

– Goalkeepers: (2.86%)

– Defenders: (51.43%)

– Midfielders: (34.29%)

– Forwards: (11.42%)

More than a half transfers this Gameweek were defenders. Key factors include an injury to former veteran favourite Aleksandar Kolarov  and an upturn in form for cheaper options, such as Bournemouth’s penalty taking defender Charlie Daniels, who racked up an impressive 18 points in Gameweek 22. Also, Danny Simpson from Leicester was a very popular target, especially as the Foxes are out of the FA Cup and therefore will not have any postponed games this season, unless a record breakingly bad blizzard strikes the East Midlands.

Transfers In:

– Danny Simpson (LEI): 11.43%

– Leighton Baines (EVE): 11.43%

– Roberto Firmino (LIV): 11.43%

Roberto Firmino proved to be the veterans best buy this week. The Liverpool man scored two goals, had one assist and  accrued maximum bonus points. Not one of our veterans had him in this squad prior to this haul proving they have a keen sense of timing.

Transfers Out:

– Aleksandar Kolarov (MCI): 22.86%

– Riyad Mahrez (LEI): 11.43%

– Kevin De Bruyne (MCI): 8.57%

– Odion Ighalo (WAT): 8.57%

CAPTAINS

– Sergio Aguero (MCI): 55.89%

– Romelu Lukaku (EVE): 35.29%

As we expected, Romelu Lukaku and Aguero were the main contenders for the armband this week. The majority that opted for the Manchester City striker were handsomely rewarded with a 24 point haul. For Lukaku captainers there was disappointment as he failed to score or assist. The Aguero factor proved pivotal in terms of overall rankings, with just 12.8% of managers overall captaining him, a whopping 43% less than the veterans. Amongst the top 10,000 managers jus 25.6% put the armband on the Argentine.

But while Aguero’s ownership rose amongst veterans, a lower proportion captained him in Gameweek 23 than in Gameweek 22 and Gameweek 21. Lukaku’s on paper easier home tie was key with fixtures clearly still trumping form in many of the veterans’ minds. Overall and among the top 10,000, Lukaku was also the most popular captain choice (18.5% overall, 40.8% in top 10,000).

– Alberto Moreno (58.82%)

Top Starting Midfielders

Top Starting Forwards

– Harry Kane (88.24%)

– Romelu Lukaku (88.24%)

– Sergio Aguero (85.29%)

Delle Alli was once again a key player for the veterans. In Gameweek 20 he scored and had maximum bonus points but that week 76.23% of veterans decided to bench him.  This memory clearly influenced the veterans in Gameweek 23 with only 30% denying the Spurs midfielder a place in their top XI. Given he delivered a 13 point return in Gameweek 23 it is likely even fewer veterans will make that mistake again with Alli.

OVERALL RANKINGS

While the average score was just 43 points and the top 10,000 managers’ average was 50, the veterans’ average was 58 points. This is the second Gameweek in a row where the veterans  have trumped both the current elite and overall Fantasy managers. As the dust settled at the end of Gameweek 23 70.59% of veterans got a green arrow and their average overall position now is 95,626 – 24,572 places better than at the end of Gameweek 22.

    Aguero © does it again as well as learning a lesson in not benching Alli. Fingers crossed our long climb up the rankings continues. 🙂

      He keeps the full list under wraps but has revealed a few. It focuses on those who have been playing a while and includes those doing well in the hall of fame, as well as some Mods and Contribs and former winners. So it includes the likes of Villa Ronka, Triggerlips, Mark, myself, Tom Fenley, Dufflinks.

      Next year we will start this article from Gameweek One. And before the season start, we will offer to all of the managers from FFS to sent an email and check in if they want to be in contention for next season veterans sample.

        Wouldn't that skew your data? You're more likely to get people responding who do well, rather than a broad spectrum of good, bad and indifferent. Just an a thought, not a criticism.

          Will see, my idea is to set up some basic conditions: for example minimum 5 FPL season, minimum two top10k finishes etc. And then filtered out all responses and set up a new data. This way, peoples may have doubts about the sample. And, before new season starts, I want to publish how many managers are included, what was their average overall position in season before, their average Hal of Fame position, their experience etc. Just an initial thoughts.

            Sounds like a good plan as would encourage those who have had at least a couple of good seasons to enter who may well not have had success this year or even last. The key I would imagine is experience and to show a sign that they either are/or have been successful so have what it takes to do well in FPL.

            There must be a large number of FPL managers who have been playing 5 or more seasons and had at least two top 10k finishes, but the number who have also had at least one top 1k finish and a high position in the Hall of Fame will be far smaller.

              Before new season starts, we will ask community on FFS about their ideas. What do they think, what conditions needs to be fulfilled.

                You could just take (say) the leading fifty managers from the Hall of Fame as at the start of the season as soon as their new ids are known without asking them first.

                Or you could set up an elite mini-league for volunteers who satisfy your conditions to join. You would probably find that some of the best players (such as Ville Ronka) might not volunteer to join, but you could issue personal invitations to any notable absentees and might get a few extra that way. Perhaps you might need to restrict the numbers so that it doesn't become too large to analyse.

                It might be interesting to compare these two sets of managers against each other to see how their choices differ. Some managers might be in both sets.

                ...Note that there is already a Veteran League (5+ Seasons), http://fantasy.premierleague.com/my-leagues/156247/standings/. The top 4 in this league have all had at least 2 top 10k finishes, but many of the others haven't.
                Other veterans are likely to be found in the Old Farts League and in the Mods and Contributors League.

                The majority of members of Top 10k Any Season have only had one top 10k finish and no top 1000 finishes in previous seasons, whereas many of the leading managers in Top 1000 ANY Season have had two or more top 10k finishes.
                The leading half dozen in Top 10k Any Season however are currently ahead of the leader of Top 1000 ANY Season.
                These six are likely to achieve their second top 10k finish this season, and perhaps also their first top 1000 finish - they are on the way up.

    Yes - this is the article that interests me most on here.

    Wonder how many of us regret early seasons when we got bad ranks and thus ruined averages? This is only my fourth - have gone 200k, 6k, 53rd and currently ay 19k. First season I only really checked FFS for team news (and took a crazy amount of hits) but now I try and digest everything.

    Ranks after that - though down to a lot of luck - I'm sure can be attributed to the information I've got from here. I thought it only right I should pay full members this year too.

    It's a great game - very much like poker for keeping emotions out and playing a long game (with the odd maverick move now and again).
