It was an exciting first week for the group stage of the FIFFSA 5-a-side tournament. In Gameweek 23 the first seeds faced the second seeds, while the fourth seed minnows squared up to the third seeds across the eight groups. It is early days and with one match gone all teams have everything still to play for.

Gameweek 5 Review

The average team score for this week was 287.8 points.

Group A was the only group where no teams beat the average score, it’s group average was the lowest at 260 points. Top seeds Costa Rica being the highest scorers with a victory 282-272 against Belgium. Third seeds Indonesia had a much more comfortable victory demolishing Norway 280-230

Group B was a tale of two halves with comfortable wins in both matches. The average score in this group was 287.5, slightly below average for the competition as a whole. New Caledonia beat Egypt 303 to 253 (50 points!) and Montenegro beat Mexico 317-277 (40 points!). Egypt and Mexico will need to pick their scoring up in future matches if this group should come down to points scored for qualification

Group C contained Cuba, the second highest scoring team of the Gameweek, and  had the second highest average group score at 301.75. Cuba routed Italy 332-289, while in the other match was closer as Germany beat Australia 307-279

The largest win of the week came in Group D. Bosnia and Herzegovina put Peru to the sword with a 71 point win (319-248). This has left Peru far adrift of even third place by 62 points. In the other match it was a very tight affair as Djibouti overcame Malaysia for a three point win (313 – 310). This was another group scoring comfortably above the average score at 297.5

Group E had the lowest scoring match of the round. Argentina overcame  Northern Ireland with a lowly 265-249. Both well below the Gameweek average. Third seeds Zambia shook the group up as the only team to score above average for the week as they beat Israel 311- 262. Low scores from three of the teams getting low scores led to the second lowest average score for this group at 271.75

Third seeds Jamaica made Group F sit up and take notice posting an admiral 323, which was 48 points higher than any other team in the group. Sri Lanka could only muster 261 as they attempted to defeat Jamaica.  The other match was a much closer affair where Columbia beat Tahiti 275-261. Despite Jamaica’s high score this group was still below average at only 280.

Group G was an extremely high scoring group in the opening round with Singapore demolishing top seeds Portugal 341 – 319. This match contained the highest performing player of the week with Bronaldinho scoring a whopping 90 points. In addition, Singapore’s score was the highest of the round. Unsurprisingly this group had the highest average score at 313.5, this is 38.5 points more than Group A. In the other match Uruguay comfortably beat India 312-281. This looks like a tough group for everyone involved.

Group H was the only group where all the teams beat the average team score of 287.8 and it had the third highest average group score at 298.5 it looks like another tough group to be in and was another group where the top seed got beaten. Qualifying top scorers Wales lost to Finland 289 – 306 in a comfortable win. The other match in this group was much tighter with The Seychelles edging out Iceland 303 – 296. Iceland appear to have nobody at the helm but this “ghostship†is still very effective and will prove a danger to anyone it faces.

The luckiest team award goes to Argentina, who managed to beat  Northern Ireland with only 265 points. This was 23 points below average.

The unluckiest team award goes to Portugal who lost with 319 points. This is 31 points above average and the 4th highest team score of the entire week!

The worst benching decision goes to Wales. By benching Spencer’s 73 points they lost their match, if they had chosen differently they could have beaten Finland and would be sat atop of group H

The presser award for Group Stages Gameweek 1 goes to Oghash for his four part odyssey  as FIFFSA sides traded Fantasy Football for going in search of the cure. Part one can be found here, part two here, part three here and part four here.

Keep the pressers up! There are so many excellent contributors which have yet to win awards. If you haven’t submitted one before why not submit one this week?

Gameweek 6 Preview

Gameweek 6 sees the top seeds playing the third seeds and second seeds playing the fourth seeds.

Already we have opportunities for several teams to gain automatic promotion to the knockout stages. If there are wins for Jamaica and Colombia in group F and Singapore and Uruguay in group H then both of the top teams in these groups will go through.

The other six groups involve teams on three points facing each other and teams on zero points facing each other. Neither a win or a loss would guarantee a side were through or out in these groups but to be on zero points after Round 2 of qualification would make qualification very difficult.

Please see our new Tournament Spreadsheet. All scores, player, fixture and tables information can be found here.

Further Information

A quick reminder of the format. Each Gameweek, teams will pick a team of five players to go head to head with their opposite nation. The match will then be decided by the aggregate score of each teams’ Gameweek scores after hits have been accounted for.

Captains are required to submit their team sheets to fiffsa.exec@gmail.com by 1200 Noon (GMT) on Tuesday Feb 2nd otherwise their sixth player will be automatically benched.

Live scorecards will be up shortly before the kick-off on Tuesday evening at the above spreadsheet

If you have any further queries, feel free to ask below in the comments or email us at: fiffsa.exec@gmail.com

We actually got pretty lucky as had a few Swansea types hanging around in teams that there hadn't been time to get rid of and they came good as differentials.

Sometimes better to be lucky than good!

Chenku & Joses Magic Omelette squared up, eye to eye, at the mandatory press conference. The room fell silent aside from the ceramic clicks of the dozen or so photographers. Would this be the first physical fight of the World Cup? Baited breath was the order of the day.

'This man' screamed Chenku, inches from Jose's face, 'This man' he repeated as he turned to the press, a smile creeping across his face. This man is a friend, we do not hate each other'

Jose looked at his friend and said to the waiting journalists 'we are men of honour, we will meet on the pitch with our heads held high. The best team will win.'

With that they both turned around and walked out of the conference.

Our motor boat sliced through the waves – or it should have done. Instead it sent us lurching up and down as we bounced from crest to crest in a shower of white sea spray. With the rolling movement and growling engine, the cuts were enough to make the boat feel alive. We knew which way we expected it to lurch and it routinely surprised us.

Beneath us, we saw the sea teeming with fish. They were flashing this way and that, like Fantasy Football Scout visitors looking for Double Gameweek news. Badger stretched out a paw to the water and a fish jumped into it. As his fist closed, the fish slipped out and swam by his closed fingers.

“You should not look down,” Blue Lion said to Badger. “If you look down you will feel sick. Watch the island. The island does not move.”

We looked where Blue Lion was pointing. Strangely, Ko Samui seemed miles behind us, but the drop off island appeared as distant as it had an hour ago.

“I’m not feeling sick,” said Badger and he slunk his head back over the side.

Hypnotized by thoughts of double gameweeks, none of us moved again until the water turned blue and a coral bed loomed beneath us. We clambered out and heaved the boat onto the sand. Jawain and Blue Lion jumped out and rushed off to scout for a pitch where we could play Finland. The Finns had been bemused at being asked to play on a remote island in the Gulf of Thailand, but thankfully didn’t ask too many questions. We wanted to make progress in our quest to reach the beach, but didn’t want to tell anyone else about it.

Balders and I immediately found some nearby rocks in the shade of an old coconut tree that allowed us to look at Doosra’s stats tables without the glare of sunlight on our tablet screens. Cheeseoid secured the boat and went to rustle up some coconuts. None of us wanted to disturb Badger, who seemed to be asleep.

Our shade was disappearing when Jawain and Blue Lion returned to report they had found a suitable location for a game of five-a-side.

“Here drink these, we need to be hydrated”, said Cheeseoid as he threw each of us a coconut. As we sat drinking the coconut milk to quench our thirst, the faint sound of a motor boat in the distance grew steadily louder.

“That’ll be the Finns,” said Jawain. “Let’s wake Badger up.”

As we walked over to the boat we caught a whiff of sick and stopped. Cheeseoid and I put our shirt sleeves over our mouths in a vain attempt to block out the smell and stepped into the boat.

We lifted Badger out and carried him into the undergrowth where the sun’s beating rays couldn’t hurt him anymore.

“What’s black and white and red all over?” asked Cheese.

“Badger,” he added with a forced laugh.

“I dunno,” said Balders. “He’s looking pretty green to me.”

The sound of the motor boat was very close now. We gave Badger an open coconut and he smiled wanly. “Thanks lads. Guess I should have looked at the Island.”

“Will you be okay?” I asked.

“Yeah, leave me here to recover and I’ll come to cheer you on when I’m feeling better.”

In the distance a motorboat engine died and we turned to make our way to the pitch.

From behind us, we heard Badger’s hoarse voice shout after us: “Finish them!”

Sky Sports News reporter Andy Burton asked Finland captain Ljayham a few questions in a pre-match interview.

    R. Finland has had no real major honours except the Nordic Championship back in 1966. Also, one of the tournament's underdogs at the start. However, recent performances have brought about a general sense of hope among the Finnish people, hope that was last witnessed when Roy Hodgson lifted Finland to its highest ever ranking, that three or four more wins here, Finland could be in contention for glory. What are your thoughts?

Ljayham: Well, I admit it, the immediate past been rather awful, in a footballing perspective, I mean, 50 years without a trophy is not a joke. Sheesh! We'd sure like to win the cup, we have some good players, and a lot of belief. However, we'd also like to put it out that there's absolutely no pressure on us and we're concentrating on playing to the best of our abilities, taking each game as it comes. We're happy with the way things are progressing.

    R. There being a stark difference with the freezing situation in Finland, do you think the weather will give your next opponent, Seychelles, a slight advantage with them being used to a bit of the sun?

Ljayham: I must say we do enjoy the weather here, sometimes it does get really hot, and I have to look up to determine if the suns are indeed two 😉 Of course, it presents a real change of pace for us and we will have to be cautious about our opponents style of play.

    R. Speaking of the last round of matches, you did beat Wales, a team that features last season's FPL champion, and also a player that has finished in the top 5 worldwide recently. That's quite a feat, do you think you got lucky in that game?

Ljayham: Sometimes it's better to be lucky than to be good. This is football and these things happen. I remember during the game thinking about how I made a terrible choice, benching a player that got one of the best scores, and I was gutted. But, they did the same as well, and a few maverick player picks for us worked out and we carried the game.

    R. How would you describe Finland's style of play, and what can we expect today?

Ljayham: I've always been a fan of fast-paced attacking football. We've almost always taken an early lead in our games. Sometimes it hasn't worked out, like THAT time when Harry Kane broke our hearts, but with every fall we learn something new. We try and keep it exciting, that's all. But we also need to master the art of seeing out games.

    R. What are your thoughts on Seychelles?

Ljayham: I don't want to talk about that.

    R. Why?

Ljayham: It's not really my job to talk about other teams. Sometimes these things can be taken out of context. Well, I did watch replays of their last game with Iceland and noticed the team spirit, coming back from behind to win it, we will have to be cautious about that. I have huge respect for them and their captain, it should be an end-to-end affair. I believe we should present them with a challenge if we are at our best. Hopefully we can all have a round of our famous Koskenkorva vodka after the game.

    R. Lastly, you said you did make a wrong benching call in the last game. How do you arrive at that decision? Are you worried you might do it again?

Ljayham: Trust me, it's every captain's nightmare. Now of course I will not share with you hoW we do it (laughs), since the opponents are clearly reading the papers and we have to try keep them guessing.

    R. Probably not related, but I'm looking forward to you addressing Oghash later on.

Ljayham: Getting cheeky, are we now? I was wondering when you'd bring that up. Well, I haven't been around much, but that's something for another time.

    R. Alright, Jay, any final words?

Ljayham: Nothing much more from me. I just want to thank the Executive Committee for the excellent work that they are doing, it's been such a good experience with this tournament and that cannot be overlooked.

    R. That will be all for now, thank you for your time.

    Ljayham: Cheers then

Wow, Ljay, you really have a talent with handling the media. But I have to admit, when it comes to the climate, I honestly think the advantage is ours - taking into account the endless hours we spend in red hot saunas. But either way, I'm really excited to see how this turns out 🙂

    CHAOS IN CAMP CUBA!

Reports are emerging tonight of a chaotic situation in the halls of pre-tournament favorites Cuba. It appears that a number of the team were seen out drinking Rum and smoking cigars until late last night in celebration of 'their Catalan brother's conquest of England'. Following this, there are reports that team captain, Jaffalito only emerged from his bed at around 3 pm this afternoon.

When asked about his team selection for the forthcoming games by a passing fan, all colour is said to have drained from Jaffalito's face and he was heard to mutter a string of expletives in Spanish. It is understood that a number of the team are worse for wear, although a rather hungover set of Cuban players are expected to turn out tonight. In particular, Rupert el Caballo is thought to be particularly unwell, having taken several hits of military strength Rum.

We spoke to midfield veteran Bedknobs and Boomsticks earlier, who is believed to have missed out on the matchday squad despite being 'in the peak of physical fitness'.

"Well, obviously I'm disappointed to only be on the bench," he said through obviously gritted teeth, "but if that's what the gaffer decides I'll just have to go with it. Clearly, my Adonis like body is my temple, but ultimately everyone prepares in there own way, And if some of the team have chosen to prepare by licking Rum off the hooves of an Andalusian filly whilst attempting to smoke a cigar in reverse, that's simply there own business."

Reedy has so far denied the allegations that the horse in question was Andalusian.

Tahiti and Jamaica on the same points. Tahiti have one Barkley more.

    Jamaica needs Aguero BAPS.
