Romelu Lukaku limps off at Goodison as Ross Barkley nets twice in a 3-0 win over Newcastle. Steven McClaren, meanwhile, has numerous concerns in defence ahead of a weekend clash with West Brom. Elsewhere, Chelsea chalk up a fourth successive away clean sheet under Guus Hiddink as Odion Ighalo is kept quiet in a goalless draw at Vicarage Road.

Barkley at the double

Everton cruised to a 3-0 victory over Newcastle United at Goodison Park, chalking up the second-most shots on target (seven) of any team this Gameweek. Following Romelu Lukaku’s withdrawal at the break by virtue of a back complaint, Ross Barkley stepped up to convert two penalties in the final seven minutes of the encounter, marking the first time he’s scored in the league since Gameweek 14. The midfielder also scored in Everton’s pair of cup matches against Man City and Carlisle over the last week, highlighting his improving eye for goal.

On the topic of Lukaku’s knock, Roberto Martinez revealed in his post-match presser that the Belgian frontman is a doubt for their trip to Stoke after receiving a kick in the back:

“Rom couldn’t really walk – he got a knee in the back and found it painful. He tried to run it off at the end of the first half but couldn’t. We’re playing on Saturday and it’s difficult to tell if he will make it, but it’s not a major problem apart from the impact and the neurological reaction down into his legs”.

Regardless of whether he’s passed fit for the Britannia Stadium showdown, the Belgian’s 46% ownership will likely be scouring the market for replacements – he’s now failed to score in six of his last seven appearances and is without a fixture in Gameweek 27.

Elsewhere on the injury front, John Stones was sidelined with a minor hamstring niggle and is likely to be out of action for between seven and 10 days.

Having bagged a goal and assist against Carlisle in the FA Cup, Aaron Lennon repeated the feat against Steve McClaren’s troops. The former Tottenham Hotspur recruit now boasts two goals and one assist in three starts, strengthening his case for more regular minutes. Meanwhile, Tom Cleverley served up his second assist of the campaign.

Everton recorded their second clean sheet in four outings, but we’re still unconvinced by a rearguard that ranks top for goals conceded at home (22). Stoke and West Bromwich Albion notched just three goals between them over the last three Gameweeks, though, which bodes well for the Merseysiders’ short-term shut-out prospects.

Defensive concerns for Magpies

Newcastle’s fifth defeat in seven matches was compounded by fresh injuries to Chancel Mbemba and Paul Dummett, and a red card for Jamaal Lascelles – who now sits out their home tie against West Brom on Saturday. Mbemba and Dummett are now doubts for the Baggies clash, which could force Steve McClaren to field a makeshift defence that includes the likes of Steven Taylor at centre-back and Jack Colback (if he’s fit) at left-back.

To facilitate Andros Townsend’s maiden start for the Tynesiders, Aleksandar Mitrovic dropped to the bench and Ayoze Perez was tasked with leading the line. Ultimately, Newcastle carded their fourth blank in seven matches, increasing the likelihood that Seydou Doumbia – who remained rooted to the bench against Everton – will soon be drafted into the starting line-up.

Ighalo blanks again

Odion Ighalo owners will also be considering their options after the Watford striker failed to net in last night’s goalless draw with Chelsea. Still sitting in over 37% of FPL managers, the Nigerian has now drawn blanks in four of the last five Gameweeks ahead of a trip to Spurs, though the following two fixtures – against Palace and Bournemouth – will persuade many to hold, particularly as the Cherries clash is in Gameweek 27.

Another clean sheet for Chelsea

Chelsea stretched out their unbeaten streak to seven matches and registered their fourth shut-out in six outings last night. All four of those clean sheets have arrived on the road – indeed, the Blues have yet to concede in an away league match since Guus Hiddink took the helm. Cesar Azpilicueta (5.7) has now averaged 7.8 points over those four fixtures and offers a viable alternative to Branislav Ivanovic (6.5), who has now averaged 6.6 points per appearance with the Dutchman in charge.

In attack, Eden Hazard was once again utilised as a late second-half sub and, despite returning to full fitness in recent weeks, is struggling to reclaim a starting berth. Hiddink once again kept faith in Oscar on the left, with Cesc Fabregas tucked in behind Diego Costa. The latter failed to get amongst the points last night but with three goals and two assists in five, his owners will be happy to hold ahead of back-to-back home encounters with United and Newcastle.

Nah, i don't think he is getting injured. Just that transferring in a player because he will have good fixtures after 2 weeks should wait for after 2 weeks. Use these 2 weeks for a 2 week punt. Price rises permitting.

I have no reason to doubt Giroud starting. I don't think we have ever successfully guessed Wenger changing anything along expected lines. He persists while us fans clamor for change, and then makes a surprise change when we feel there was no need for. Trying to second guess his moves is dangerous. He is instead very reluctant to make changes. Giroud should start and score well in a win, and then Arséne will say "I always believed in him" etc. etc.

Feel free to leave your tales of highs and lows here.

Anyone dare not captain Aguero and see their score rocket?

Barkley owners should have plenty to say? Any Lukaku captainers lurking around who want to bare their soul?

Probably after 27, as Payet has Sunderland that week.

Only do it if you need the funds though. By 27 you'll be able to see his performance.

A cautionary tale for UFPL. Came out of Saturday with Kane and Vardy on double figures and Aguero (c) resting on 7. Opted to gamble 14 points and bring Lukaku in with the armband off the bench, only to watch him get injured and Barkley (thankfully also brought in) get 16 points. In future I think the double-gamble of subbing out a captain altogether may be too much - it may be that the correct move was to leave Kun but captain Barkley.

Then again it was penalties Barkley scored, so it could've been so different...

      Rough:

Only 1 clean sheet (Ivanovic) in a gameweek full of clean sheets.

Rough - finally taking the plunge on Aguero. Using an 8 point hit to do so, taking out Vardy in the process (plus KDB and Nyom). Brought in Targett as part of the 8 point hit and then put him as 2nd sub with Simpson 3rd sub, which was just brilliant when Baines didn't play (missing Everton's clean sheet) and Targett came on for me. I got 70 points but still managed to fall over 30,000 places!

Smooth - at least Barkley and Kane turned up for me, and my defence and Mahrez got me a few more points. Bringing in Aguero as (c) did also mean that I avoided an inevitable Lukaku captaincy otherwise (but would have been better to have just kept Vardy).

      CONS

-Got in Hazard instead of Alexis. (Chelsea fanhood tugging) That went well. And look at both's fixtures this week.
-Didn't have Barkley. Didn't have Kane. Have stubbornly resisted both to good effect till now but it just blew up here.
-Thought I started Alli instead of Ighalo but it turned out I forgot to hit "Confirm your team" before sleeping. I don't even know how that happened.
-Benched Simpson as well (though I was never starting him over Dawson).
      -40 pointer. Dropped from 80k to 182k. :/

      Rough:

Aguero (C) got yellow card, dropping 1p and bonus, Lukaku off at half time, and both my transfers this week Sanchez and Payet blanked.

My rough (as every week it seems) is that I have Gomes and Butland, and manage to play the wrong one EVERY. SINGLE. WEEK.

Seriously, this week with Butland against Manchester "0-0 at half time" United getting 1 point, compared to Gomes against a revitalised and incisive Chelsea frontline that have found their mojo getting 8 points. A 7 point swing! I'm tearing my hair out!

I'm in serious danger of rage-transferring Butland to Forster and lock&cleaving the Southampton man between the sticks for the rest of the season.

Really really rough: Took a 4pt hit

Traded out Azpilicueta (9) and Vardy (13)

Brought in Aguero (5) and Targett (1)

      Lost about 20 points.

      And then Barkley scored twice.

      I don't have Barkley.

Smooth: Out of all the possible KDB replacements I went with gut and got Antonio. Ended up with 71 points which was alright.

      Rough: Nice story this one.

Martinez didn't play Baines and I lost the CS.
Williams who came off the bench lost his CS in the 91st minute.
Lukaku, who I also had got the injury and wasn't there to take penalties.
Maybe Baines would've taken them had he been on the pitch, but Barkley got them and scored in 88th and 94th minutes.

So this chain of events matters because.... my FFS cup opponent (Johny Englander) had Barkley and knocked me out from the cup 73-71.
That made a pretty decent GW into a bitter one.

Rough: my ability to pick a defense, at least this week I was 50/50, starting Monreal (8) and Ivan (6) but benching Gomes (8) and Simpson (6)

Seems Smooth But Actually Rough: Normally I'd be happy with 54pts but without Kane, Alli, Vardy or Barkley - dropped 3 places in my ML and too many places to count in OR.

And that Kun (C) YC killed his points and my hopes.

    Lukaku replacements

What are Lukaku owners doing? Even if he's fit to face Stoke arguably there are far better options around.

Those without Kane arguably face an easy decision.

    But what of other options?

Here's three of my top picks to get the discussion started.

Vardy - this is the sensible dullard option. Great form, tough fixtures but is the poster boy of long term planners. No blanks on the horizon and he has a super human ability to not only brush aside injury but also rack up goals even when an injury doubt.

Costa - another dullard choice. He plays for Chelsea, is nailed on and should do well. He tempts me a lot, although in ManU this week the Chelsea attack may struggle to rack up the goals

Alberto Polaschi (SWA) - this is my top tip for those looking for something different. He had one of the best goal attempt per minute ratios in GWK 24 - in just half a match and has the manager's backing. What's more his ownership doesn't get more differential - 0.0%.

      Vardy definitely.

Why is Rooney not put as an option here?

Underlying stats are very similar to Kane, but with more attempted assists and some fewer shots IIRC.

He is an option - you've just mentioned him. 🙂

I am tempted...the 70 min sub appearances worry me. Also I have King so that means i'll have two players to cover 90 mins but can only play one really.

Yeah they're slightly deterring me too, but if he keeps scoring and getting bonus i don't mind 😀

Surely he'll nail down a spot if he keeps saving them? Ah, King makes it a different story. I came very close to getting Vardy last night, but I think the two goals he scored were a result of bad goalkeeping (1st one) and a very lucky break (2nd one) and I don't see him getting THOSE kind of goals in his next two, although he may still nick a goal or two.

I'm completely with you on that one. A wondergoal and a lucky deflection. Think it was his first goal outside the box this season.

He might get a goal here and there, but not at this rate, and not in this fashion.

Have you seen Vardy's stats? He only had 2 shots against Liverpool! Not hugely impressive and his next two fixtures are very difficult. Fixtures make it very difficult to find a Lukaku replacement, particularly with the blanks coming up. Might hold for this week as I have 5 decent mids, and then get Ighalo in for a couple of tasty fixtures. Either that or just punt on Martial or Austin.

He's only behind Kane, Aguero, Costa, Giroud and Mitrovic over the last 4. I have Kane and Aguero, Costa is too expensive, Giroud stops the opportunity of doubling on Sanchez and Ozil, and I don't trust Mitrovic at all.

I agree with it being very difficult to replace him this week. I've happily held, even if he doesn't play (but it looks like he will). However, I think there's no denying Vardy's ability to consistently get points, and now that he's on pens (presumably) he doesn't even need to play well to score occasionally.

Gotta be Vardy hasn't it? I only have Lukaku's sale value (8.6) for me, which means my options are:

      Vardy
      Afobe
      Chaz Austin
      Iggie
      Paloschi
      Naismith

The top option stands out a mile - as much as I love Paloschi from FM I think I've gotta hope for a high scoring early game (I also have Mahrez, Aguero and Silva) and have Vardy for the long term.

      A much undesired hit.

Yes, I had the easy decision of going Lukaka > Kane, to complete my front three alongside Kun and Ighalo. I'm losing patience with Ighalo though, and am contemplating Ighalo > Vardy for GW27. Makes my front 3 super-dullard, I know, but I'm not chasing so don't need to take any risks, and these just look like the best options at the moment. Midfield is where the problems are, so safe picks up front affords a bit of comfort.

Costa would be an interesting choice but I'd like to hold a transfer so I can't generate sufficient funds.

Think I'm likely to go for Vardy as a dullard or Austin if I'm feeling slightly riskier. Austin has slightly better fixtures and we all know what he can do but the lack of clarity on his likely minutes may scare me off.

Vardy for me, made the trade last night to avoid another price drop on Lukakku.

Don't care about stats and certainly don't care about fixtures - though I fail to see how ManCity away and Arsenal away constitute bad fixtures for Vardy.

Thinking a lot about this...so many options but no obvious one.

Vardy - fixtures + if you already have Mahrez i would't want to double up on them with City and Arsenal away

Costa - Chelsea not scoring much and he always looks like gettigna red card

Ighalo - Spurs away this weekend puts me off

Other strikers like Austin, Giroud, Mitrovic etc also are either in bad for or not nailed.

So i thought this : bring Shaw or Arnie instead Westwood for 5th mid and bench Lukaku this week if he is injured so i can bring Vardy for GW 27. Stoke have EVE (H), BOU (A) AST (H) NEW (H) for their next 4 fixtures plus they are guaranteed to play GWs 27 and 30.

      Any thoughts of this?

Diego Costa all day. I will give Lukaku this week, but those fixtures are amazing for Costa.
Newcastle at home - they are porous
Southampton away - Southampton will be due a game where they concede 2+, just intuition but these CS runs always come to an end
Norwich away - 8 goals conceded in their last 2 games at home
Stoke at home - conceding lots of goals

Hmmm - thing is, I'm fully persuaded he'll score against them both. City especially, as the moment you press them they fall apart, and Arsenal's defensive resolve has often been revealed to be a mirage that disappears at the slightest examination. Leicester will take the game to both of them, so no doubt Vardy will be involved.

Guess Ighalo is a worthy mention as he has cpl and BOU in next 3 and was quite threatening vs Chelsea too

Switch to Valencia, and then to Vardy in GW 27.

annoying as any transfer out would be for a -4 and not really convinced on anyones potential! Vardy has two rough games, Costa is close to getting a red card every match, Giroud and Arsenal aren't convincing...

More likely i'll upgrade Stanislas to Ayew / Antonio and bench Lukaku, switching him for Vardy in GW 27.

Sold last night for Vardy. The spare cash also allowed Sterling>Sanchez. It was a mistake getting Lukaku back for Vardy after I sold him originally to get Aguero. Cost me points and 0.2m in drop so far so acted quickly before it gets worse.

Sick of Sterling getting messed about for pitch time, and an Arsenal avalanche is surely due soon?!

Also two blank gW27 players out.

Kane and Aguero obviously but after Costa and Rooney there is not much else. All depends if you are winning your leagues or not. Safety first Costa or a punt Afobe perhaps or the new bloke at Swansea. For me it's Costa for Lukaku to join Kane and Aguero up front.

    Butland (Elliot)
    Ward Cresswell Targett Simpsons Williams
    Payet Silva Ozil Alli Mahrez
    Kane Iggy Kun

    Revised plan:
GW24-25 Silva -> Firmino for AVilla and Sunderland.
    GW25-26 Iggy -> Vardy
GW26-27 Ozil -> Sanchez. play Kane, Vardy, Payet, Alli, Sanchez
GW27+ Barkley the week DGW happens.

Very evidently proud of my plan, thoughts?

          Definitely B / J anyway.

I fancy Leicester enough to never bench Mahrez, and if I had Vardy I wouldn't bench him either, City aren't THAT solid. Southampton are solid though.

What's everyone thinking regarding replacement for Lukaku?

Even if he's only out this weekend which I think will probably be the case he's got a blank GW27 and GW30 currently.

Thinking it's probably best to get in a replacement from either Stoke, Southampton or Leicester as they are currently the only teams guaranteed to play in GW27 and GW30.

Basically that means its Vardy or Austin can't see anyone I'd want from Stoke as Bojan gets hauled off after 60 minutes most games.
