Our usual early Saturday scour for overlooked Fantasy options comes around once again this morning. Southampton and Newcastle’s new boys are joined by Swansea’s resurgent playmaker as all three prepare for a home fixture this weekend.

Charlie Austin

Having shaken off a knock that sidelined him for Southampton’s stalemate at the Emirates, Charlie Austin (7.0) is in contention for a starting berth ahead of West Ham United’s visit. Even in the event that the English marksman has to settle for a cameo role in the second half, he showcased his capacity to deliver attacking returns in reduced minutes against Manchester United, emerging from the bench at the 79-minute mark to seal a late winner.

In appreciation of Romelu Lukaku’s form, fitness and Gameweek 27 blank, many of the Belgian’s 42% ownership are scouring the market for a replacement forward. Jamie Vardy – as the second-most transferred-in player this week – represents the most popular choice because of his recent renaissance (three goals in two starts), yet, having netted 18 times for relegated QPR last term, Austin’s goal scoring pedigree suggests he could prove a viable alternative.

In terms of Austin’s immediate prospects, West Ham are in the midst of an eye-catching purple patch (one loss since Gameweek 14), but Ronald Koeman’s side will draw confidence from the Irons’ less-than-stellar stats away from the Boleyn Ground: they rank third for shots inside the box conceded (127) in road match-ups, while only five sides have conceded more big chances (20).

Gylfi Sigurdsson

The first 19 Gameweeks of the season yielded just two goals and one assist for Gylfi Sigurdsson (7.0), belying the attacking productivity (seven goals, 10 assists) that saw him emerge as a prime mid-priced asset last term. In the Swans’ last five outings, however, the Iceland international has re-established himself as a viable option on the Fantasy market, notching a pair of penalties and two goals from open play.

Although Sigurdsson’s assignment to dead-ball duties comprises a large part of his appeal, his underlying statistics across the previous four Gameweeks illustrate the depth to his game: he ranked in the top 10 among midfielders for attempts (10), while only Christian Eriksen managed more shots on target (eight) than the ex-Spurs playmaker (six).

Sigurdsson’s assist potential (one this campaign) has been limited by the pitiable form of Swansea’s forward contingent, so Alberto Paloschi’s impressive 45-minute debut stint against West Brom in midweek – in which he recorded three shots inside the box and struck the woodwork – portends an upturn in that regard. Certainly, both men will fancy their chances this Saturday as Francesco Guidolin’s unit prepare to host a Crystal Palace outfit that places second for goals conceded (10) since Gameweek 21 and rolls up to the Liberty on the back of a five-match losing streak.

Andros Townsend

Andros Townsend (5.8) was largely isolated during his debut for Newcastle United in a 3-0 loss to Everton, mustering just 59 touches by virtue of the Toffees’ territorial dominance. However, with West Bromwich Albion – a team that averages the lowest percentage of possession (39.3%) throughout the season – next on the Magpies’ agenda, the former Tottenham Hotspur winger should be afforded greater license to express himself this weekend.

The fact that Newcastle are playing host to the Baggies – who have managed just two clean sheets in 14 outings and are without Jonny Evans – is extremely pertinent, given that they’ve chalked up more than three times as many goals in home matches (19) than road fixtures (six). Indeed, the Tynesiders tasted defeat in just one of their last five match-ups at St James’ Park.

Newcastle’s blank at Goodison Park doesn’t do justice to their underlying stats over the last four Gameweeks – McClaren’s men ranked joint-fourth for attempts (55), fourth for shots inside the box (36) and second for shots on target (21). Given that Townsend’s has averaged an effort every 34.8 minutes this term, his eye for goal could prove decisive as the Magpies attempt to climb out of the bottom three.

I'm currently on Kane . Form, at home, fixture and in Watford he has an easier opponent than Leicester. For me he just edges Aguero if going by opposition and form.

So with no idea on who to captain after listening to the podcast, being on here for hours, studying form, betting odds and fixtures. I did the only sensible thing and simply asked my 3yr old daughter, who's the best captain choice this week Kane or Aguero?

She asked "are they both nice captains daddy?" Yes I said. "Agweero then" she replied.

        Done.

Currently on Kun but Kane is niggling at me. Kun ATM because although Kane has looked good some of his recent points have been penalties which you could argue don't indicate form so much, alli will play and he steals some of Harry's points the little scamp. And just Kun at home, on form. Doesn't matter it's Leicester, he scores against anyone. City have title contention match experience, Leicester don't and might struggle to block out the hype of this one. Yeah I've just talked myself into Kun and that's what my gut says. City's last match will deter some but remember their recent away form it's no surprise.

        Kane

        1. City and therefore Kun are in the early kick off.
        2. Watford are more porous than Leicester
        3. Kane is on form and his team are creating chances

All that logic considered I'm still confident Kun will come back to bite me.

The TV companies determine which matches are played when.

They usually select the matches they expect to be higher scoring for the Saturday evening and Sunday slots, leaving the lower scoring ones for Monday evening and early Saturday.

No, they select the matches for a few weeks at a time.

The selections for game-weeks 32 onwards have not yet been made, which is why they are all currently listed as 3pm starts on Saturdays.

I captained Kun too - but at least I didn't bench Mahrez!

The bookies don't always get it right. This match was a difficult one to predict, between two sides with star strikers and strong defences.

But since it was between the top two, it is perhaps surprising that they didn't put it in a more popular spot.

And Aguero has just scored! 😀

...and that's why we give Kun the armband - even when the team is playing badly and he hasn't done much, he is still liable to pop up with a goal or two.

Do we think next season will have so many cheap players firing again?

Alli, Mahrez, Payet, Arnie, Ighalo, Vardy

Means you can afford virtually anyone and an expensive defence.

I reckon we have been spoiled and next season it will be back to rotating 3 cheapies at the back etc.

@ D1sable-what you doing today in Sky?
Leave (c) on Lukaku, and bring in Alexis tomorrow OR just (c) Özil,
It just move it now to Kun/Kane?
I take it we have a free (c) during the break?

Gw 29 break we have a free c swap yeah.

        I'm going with A.

Means I can swap captain off Alexis for Fab before next gw.

Whether lukaku and Alexis outscore just Kane/aguero is another matter

Ah I see the old Chelsea at home to Newcastle trick!
I've no Che but I think I may roll the dice with the double approach this week and review, Sanchez on his own could outscore the log of them!

Bench Willian based on nothing really, I think Leicester may score 1 and there's a good chance Mahrez will be involved. I may be anti W here so bear that in mind SS!

my current back 3 is zouma bellerin and sagna with dawson on my bench.

im also playing mahrez over payet but think both will blank.

is rose > dawson a good move on a ft and playing 4 at the back and benching mahrez and payet?

      or is that just silly?

Which combination is better in a WC team:

      A) Ozil+Smith(Bourenmouth)+Borthwick-Jackson

      or

      B) Mahrez+Smalling+Simpson

(Already got Vardy but no other Arsenal coverage apart from Monreal)

This week is a toughie for captain choices, I'm a bit indecisive so any help would be greatly appreciated, team I'm thinking is:

      Butland
      Alderweireld Bellerin Moreno
      Sanchez Payet Alli Firmino
      Aguero Kane Vardy

Bench is Schmeichel, Mahrez, Sagna and Targett.

Got Aguero as captain ATM but not confident he will be a big hitter this weekend, thoughts?

Looks like it will happen this summer, I reckon it's a good move for United, top manager who's won it all and most importantly knows the league inside out, forget this season at Chelsea that was a one off for Mourinho I feel we know all about what happened there, good move if United go through with it.
