There’s much to chew over from the weekend’s ten matches this Monday afternoon. Riyad Mahrez re-affirms his essential status, Mesut Ozil’s return to form keeps Alexis Sanchez on the backburner, Ronald Koeman returns to three at the back, whilst Gylfi Sigurdsson, Jesse Lingard and Wahbi Khazri stake a claim for our five-man midfields.

Mahrez remains locked in…
The Leicester winger rolled up to the Etihad on the back of just two assists in seven but returned to form in style on Saturday lunchtime, bagging a 14-point haul in the 3-1 win. Mahrez’ massive 64% ownership in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) continues to remain a deciding factor in our starting XIs – given his penchant for explosive returns (this was his tenth double-figure haul of the season), we can’t think about selling or even benching the Algerian in any given Gameweek for fear of a bumper haul forcing us down the overall standings.

City’s set-piece vulnerability is glaringly obvious…
With Vincent Kompany still sidelined, the City defence’s inability to deal with dead-ball situations was all too evident after Robert Huth notched twice in Leicester’s 3-1 win. Although Kompany is expected back soon, City’s upcoming schedule – a home clash with Spurs and trip to Anfield on either side of a blank – may well persuade those holding City defenders that it’s time to reconsider, with the likes of Toby Alderweireld and Eric Dier pencilled in by many from Gameweek 27 onwards.

Lingard could end the fifth midfielder debate…
It’s three goals in the last five league fixtures for the United winger after yesterday’s opener at the Bridge. Lingard looks to have cemented a role in Louis van Gaal’s starting XI for the time being, starting every match from Gameweek 21 onwards on the right flank, and his output suggests the role is his to lose. At a price of just 4.2, he’s looking like the ideal cut-price fifth midfielder right now.

Ozil’s done enough to put Sanchez switch on hold…
A goal and two bonus points in Arsenal’s win at Dean Court ensured that the German’s 49% ownership will happily hold for now. Ozil headed into the weekend on the back of five blanks in six and with Alexis Sanchez offering an obvious alternative in the Gunners’ midfield, some had been eyeing up a straight swap for the explosive Chilean. For now, though, that trade looks on hold, with many likely to keep faith in Ozil and potentially miss out on a first big haul from Sanchez until he can prove himself again.

Canaries are in free-fall….
A 2-0 loss at Villa continued a dire run of results which now leaves Norwich sitting inside the bottom three. Alex Neil’s men have conceded 16 times over that period and, aside from their 5-4 home loss to Liverpool, have shown little attacking edge and netted once in the other four fixtures. With West Ham, Leicester, Chelsea and City in the next five, the Canaries are in danger of becoming whipping boys unless Neil can arrest their decline, with Dimitri Payet owners licking their lips ahead of the Hammers’ weekend trip to Carrow Road.

Liverpool always find a way to concede…
The Reds defence yet again let us down this Gameweek after blowing a 2-0 advantage at home to Sunderland with just eight minutes left on the clock. Although Jurgen Klopp’s side have now gone six matches without a shut-out, one look at the underlying numbers suggests how vulnerable they are right now. Liverpool have allowed their opponents just 15 shots inside the box over the last four Gameweeks – that’s fewer than any other side – yet they have conceded nine times, with questions again asked of Simon Mignolet’s showings between the sticks.

Butland can’t cope as Stoke’s one-man defence…
Despite another impressive display by Jack Butland, the Potters succumbed to a third straight 3-0 loss as Everton ran riot at the Britannia. With Ryan Shawcross still sidelined, Mark Hughes’ backline is looking a far cry from the solid unit that racked up seven clean sheets in nine league outings between Gameweeks 8 and 16. Certainly, a schedule that pits them against Bournemouth, Villa and Newcastle in the next three offers hope of a return to form but if Shawcross fails to recover, Butland’s save-point heroics may be as good as it gets for his 23% owners.

Sunderland are already dancing to Khazri’s tune…
Two assists in his first start for Sunderland suggests that Sunderland’s winter signing could yet keep them afloat. Khazri proved instrumental in the Black Cats’ comeback draw by teeing up Adam Johnson and Jermain Defoe, with the playmaker wasting no time in bringing his Ligue 1 form (five goals and seven assists in 20 appearances) to the table. At a price of 6.0, the Tunisian international is shaping up as another new face for us to consider for our five-man midfields.

Baggies’ goal famine is reaching critical levels…
A trip to injury-hit Newcastle seemed the perfect opportunity for West Brom to grab a vital win and boost their bid for survival. Although the Magpies were down to the bare bones at the back, Tony Pulis’ side once again failed to produce the goods and have now scored just once in the last four Gameweeks. Given that they’ve managed a mere two clean sheets in 15, the Baggies manager’s inability to strike a balance looks set to see them dragged into the relegation battle ahead of clashes with Everton, Leicester, United and Arsenal in the next five.

…and Watford aren’t faring any better…
It’s a similar story at Vicarage Road, with a 1-0 loss at Tottenham meaning that Watford have failed to score in four of the last five Gameweeks. Worryingly for Quique Sanchez Flores, his side – just like West Brom – failed to register a single shot on target at the weekend, with Odion Ighalo blanking for the fifth time in six. The Nigerian suffered his first price drop of the season last time out and with the fatigued Troy Deeney rested to the bench, Ighalo’s owners will surely be scouring the market for alternatives.

Pochettino won’t let us pick his full-backs…
Saturday’s clash with Watford once again saw Mauricio Pochettino successfully utilise his rotation tactic in the Tottenham full-back berths.
Since Gameweek 28, the Spurs boss has started Kyle Walker and weekend match-winner Kieran Tripper three and four times respectively at right-back, whilst on the left, Ben Davies has featured in the first XI on three occasions to Danny Rose’s four over the same period. With Jan Vertonghen still injured, it leaves only Toby Alderweireld – at 6.3 – as the one secure starter in the Spurs back-four right now.

…but Wenger is tempting us with Gabriel….
A 2-0 win at Bournemouth earned Arsenal a fifth clean sheet in seven yesterday afternoon. Having replaced the suspended Per Mertesacker for the recent FA Cup win over Burnley, Gabriel has remained ahead of the German in the pecking order and has now started the last three in all competitions, helping Arsene Wenger’s side to successive league shut-outs. At 4.3, the Brazilian’s minutes are clearly worth monitoring as a potential route into the league’s joint-second most resilient defence.

Dead-ball prowess has elevated Sigurdsson…
The Swansea playmaker’s recent renaissance shows no sign of slowing after he bagged a fifth goal in the last six Gameweeks at home to Palace. Sigurdsson’s expertly taken free-kick means he has scored three of those efforts via dead-ball situations, though, having netted spot-kicks against Sunderland and Everton. Although just seven of the Icelandic international’s 17 attempts during that period have arrived inside the area, his set-piece and penalty duties are keeping him firmly in the mix.

Koeman is sticking to his wing-backs experiment…
After the exploits of Fraser Forster earned Southampton a very fortuitous clean sheet in midweek, Ronald Koeman switched back to a three-man backline for the visit of West Ham. The 1-0 win took Southampton’s run to five straight shut-outs, emphasising the prospects of their chief protagonists at the back. Koeman’s decision also keeps Matt Targett’s Fantasy hopes alive for the time being. The youngster missed out with a minor injury at the weekend but, once recovered, he could reclaim that left wing-back berth, allowing Ryan Bertrand to return to the centre of defence once again.

Maybe United, soton or Chelsea defender for Moreno?
Borthwick Jackson or Targett could be a good short term gamble leaving you with a bit of cash left over aswell. Could help you upgrade Ighalo, he's been very poor of late sadly

I think it's time to pick players based on team consistency rather than just player stats.

When you take a look at a team like Man City or Man United who can be so incredibly inconsistent when it comes to winning back to back games, it should be a measure of whether or not their players are worth the investment. Do I want a player who will only get points every other game in all likelihood?

When you look at Tottenham(can't believe I'm saying this) or Arsenal or Leicester(once again, can't believe I'm saying this) they show a lot more consistency. You can almost expect the result of a match before it happens. They don't lose very often, and they usually win the big games and consistently beat the smaller teams.

You can argue that there are players like Aguero who manage to grab some points every week, but there really is no argument for his fellow teammates who fluctuate between brilliant and woeful every other week. Add rotation and such into the balance, and there really seems no essential City player besides Aguero. The same struggle occurs with Man United. There are no essential picks because they are not consistent. They do not even have a player who is consistent within this, besides Martial, who usually plays well but doesn't get points for it.

Curiously, at Spurs, Leicester, and Arsenal, you usually get what you expect, and you usually know who you'll get it from. If Leicester score, there's a good chance Vardy or Mahrez had involvement. If Spurs score, Kane, Alli, or Eriksen probably played a part in it. When Arsenal score, you know Ozil is probably involved. Essentially, here is what I'm advocating. Is it worth tripling up on the teams in which you know what you're going to get?

I think most players (especially the top 10k) will enevitably be tripling up on Leicester soon: Huth/Fuchs/Simpson, Mahrez, Vardy

If the team you're tripling up is by far the best and will produce points. At the same time hoping the 3 players you have will be involved as well. It's a crap shoot at times.

There seems to be a consistency between these three teams when it comes to results and who usually gets the points though, and that's amazing as a FPL player

Agreed. Nailed defenders from consistent shut out teams.
And nailed attackers or the usual suspects ie Eriksen/alli/kane from teams who are scoring more goals.

Darmian, vvd, Fuchs, Monreal....All solid defenders
      Eriksen, Alli, Payet, Ozil, Barkley
Kane, Vardy, Lukaku ....All involved consistently in teams who score alot

        Aguero-Kane-Vardy

    Stoke - Southampton

Corner leading to shots are chances created

              Successful/Unsuccessful
              Fuchs - 12/17 - 41% success
              Payet - 23/44 - 34% success
              Eriksen - 21/43 - 33% success
              Willian - 29/58 - 33% success

He'd actually be my defender of choice from Leicester I think. Although I have a bit of a soft spot for Huth.

Bit gutted I've lumped myself with Schmeichel.

You're table misses some stuff as there a corners that are neither counted as successful nor unsuccessful, though I think they may be corners played short/along the floor.

So maybe actual your way of counting is purer for crosses.

Ah that is interesting, assumed they would all be classified as either successful or unsuccessful. Either way though he doesn't look out of place with the big boys in terms of corner statistics.

Jesus Christ Doosra, over a sample of just 7 corners? Corners are only successful about 20-25% of the time so going 0 for 7 happens quite a lot to a lot of players. But if you look at the season, Fuchs actually comes out quite well making 12 out of 35.

    I think I'm doing Aguero -> (C)osta this week.

No Silva or KDB, City seems to be floundering, Spurs have been stingy at the back.

Risky move, but could be massive if it goes right.

Yeah but recent history and form is far more important. And it wasn't just City that scored big against Spurs in the past few seasons - Chelsea and Liverpool in particular won high scoring games on lots of occasions. We just forgot how to defend against many of the big teams.

This year is totally different. Haven't conceded more than 1 goal against any of the top 6 teams

If its a shoot out between Souare and Monreal then yes Souare still. Bear in mind I don't have any Arsenal defenders so I'm not in the same boat.

    FPL Dream Team Project Update

    http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2015/12/15/in-search-of-the-dream-fpl-team/

Since I started this in gw16, the Dream Team has been ruthless in its grasp on those 15 squad positions:

    GW 16
    Butland 4.9 (Gomes 4.7)
    Smalling 6.9 Alderweireld 5.7 Kolarov 6.5 (Dann 5.3 Sagna 5.3)
    Mahrez (c) 6.9 Ozil 9.7 Barkley 7.4 Wijnaldum 6.9 (Ayew 7.1)
    Vardy 7.6 Lukaku 9.1 Ighalo 5.9

And ten GWs later, almost no change:

    Gw25
    Cech (Butland)
    Alderweireld Sagna Smalling (Dann Nyom)
Mahrez (c) Ozil Barkley Wijnaldum (Ayew)
    Lukaku (vc) Ighalo Vardy

Not a single turnover in the front eight. Things are tightening up but overall, these attackers have kept ticking along.

Cech came into the squad this week and promptly dominated.

The team has 2 FTs and 1.8m itb, and even more incredibly, looks pretty well set up for the gw27 blanks with only the Everton players and Wijnaldum to worry about.

It is a bit dispiriting, but I shaved 700k off of my rank of 1.5M since forsaking these players a month ago. Barkley and Mahrez have punished me lately, though. Not sure if I can hold off buying back Mahrez any longer.

The key is to hit differentials at just the right time -- Siggy has been glorious but Payet over Firmino five GWs ago has cost me 28 points!

    Correction for the article.

    > With Jan Vertonghen still injured, it leaves only Toby Alderweireld – at 6.3 – as the one secure starter in the Spurs back-four right now.

Dier is nailed on and only 5.3. Granted he's not in their back 4, but is down as a defender in FPL.

    Fabianski Schmeichel
    Terry Darmian Dann Cedric PvA
    Alli Eriksen Payet Arnie Oscar
    Lukaku Valencia Benteke

    P. s. My team is a bit poor by standards on here but that's cos I'm in a draft league!

Hey guys, everyone seems to be bringing in a southampton defender which makes sense given their recent clean sheets and upcoming fixtures, but why not Bertrand? Am i missing something? I thought he had the bigger attacking threat?

Also...is it worth holding on to Baines?

He might return to the centre this week with a couple of players out and Targett back

    @Doosra

With Carroll back, will Valencia be benched this weekend?

        Why?

I remember Valencia could be on the wings if not wrong?

Bilic has been very careful in re-introducing Carroll to the starting eleven this season.

Emineke may even start ahead of Valencia...

Or Valencia may start out wide instead of Moses...

Not particularly helpful reading that back 😆

Does Bilic switch between 4-3-3 and 4-2-3-1 that it is hard to know which formation he would use?

Same thoughts here, is it worth keeping Valencia for the next couple of weeks then, well if he starts this weekend at least.

Does Carroll negatively impact Payet? Just looked and most of Payet's damage has happened without Carroll.

    Hi all,

I am in a draft league and have some options for transfers.

    Current team:

    Adrian - Fabianski
    Rose - Bellerin - Wollscheid - Coleman - Jagielka
    Yaya - Chadli - Mahrez - Siggy - Milner
    Aguero - Valencia - Niasse

    Which one should I do?

    A) Fabianski to Forster
    B) Rose to Fonte
    C) Chadli to Lingard
    D) Valencia to Sturridge
    E) a combination, which one?

This is his last week for me, bought at 4.8 so I can take his drop.
I think Wimmer for 27 is my plan, be nice to iffset those Toby points.

Ighalo's final week with me this week.

For that reason alone I'm starting him!.. WOuld love him to go out with a bang.

And regardless of whether he gets sent off or scores a hatrick, he is still gone next week for Vardy.

    Anyone else feeling this way?

After the Kane fail I'm tempted just to stick on him. Only cost me 4 points overall, but sometime I will look elsewhere and miss a haul! Anyway we get a Kun captain break GW27! might go Sanchez for that one we'll see..

Ok, I have a fully fit squad for once.

    Do I;

a Get Moreno out before he drops again (bought at 5.0),

    b Get Kolarov out.

Wimmer seems my man. Then can sell the second guy next week and only have Kun not playing in GW27. Might then get Kompany after GW27...
