Darren Fletcher grabs a rare goal before West Brom squeeze past Peterborough on penalties. Swansea’s Ki Sung-Yueng is set to return, Cheikhou Kouyate is ruled out of West Ham’s trip to Norwich, whilst Everton new boy Oumar Niasse looks in line for his top-flight debut.

Pulis’ troops taken to penalties

Courtesy of a penalty shootout, West Bromwich Albion sneaked into the fifth round of the FA Cup when their replay against Peterborough United ended as a 1-1 draw after extra time. The League One hosts opened the scoring, but Darren Fletcher – who has been utilised in an advanced central role in the league in recent matches – leveled things up with a stunning effort. Despite fielding Salomon Rondon and Saido Berahino as a strike duo from the offset, the Baggies could only chalk up five shots on target throughout the encounter. On the injury front, Craig Dawson failed a late fitness test, but Jonas Olsson and Gareth McAuley made the starting XI. The latter, however, lasted just 19 minutes before pulling up with a hamstring complaint that Tony Pulis expects will rule him out for two weeks:

The Scout Says: West Brom recorded three blanks in their previous four outings, and that same lack of attacking spark was again on display last night. This will come as music to the ears of Fantasy managers who’ve recruited Everton or Crystal Palace defenders, given that the West Midlanders travel to Goodison Park and welcome the Eagles across the next two Gameweeks. At one stage in the season, the Baggies’ defensive assets were in hot demand but since Gameweek 11, no team in the league has notched fewer clean sheets (two), ensuring that Dawson has fallen off our radar as a desirable pick-up. With McAuley now looking set to miss out at Goodison this weekend, Romelu Lukaku owners will be optimistic that the Belgian can build on his strike in the 3-0 win at Stoke last time out.

Ki fit to return for Swansea

Ki Sung-Yueng has returned to training following the concussion he sustained from a collision with Stephane Sessegnon back in Gameweek 24, putting him in contention for Swansea City’s home tie against Southampton this weekend. Having rested up for a week, the South Korea international feels ready to take to the field:

“I felt really dizzy after the game and had a big headache for a few days, but I feel good now. I tried to stop his shot and we both made contact with each other – it certainly wasn’t intentional. I had a few days of rest and I had ice on my face for two days, but now I’m back in training and ready to play this weekend.”

The Scout Says: Ki’s absence prompted Francesco Guidolin to shift Andre Ayew to the left side of a midfield diamond, with new signing Alberto Paloschi and Wayne Routledge leading the line. His return could find the latter dropping to the bench and Ayew pushing up alongside Paloschi – furnishing us with an out-of-position prospect. With five goals (two pens) in his last six starts, Gylfi Sigurdsson – who also ranked joint-second among midfielders for key passes (four) last Gameweek – represents the prime route into the Swans’ offense. Ayew also piques our interest: across the previous four Gameweeks, the Ghanaian winger places joint-third for attempts (13) and joint-second for shots inside the box (eight). Nonetheless, our enthusiasm in this duo is tempered by the strength of their upcoming opponents’ defences, with a home clash against Southampton preceding back-to-back trips to Spurs and Arsenal

Kouyate ruled out for weekend

West Ham United’s head of sports science, Stijn Vandenbroucke, presented a squad-fitness update on their official site. Both Winston Reid and Joey O’Brien sustained hamstring injuries against Liverpool and will undergo scans today, whilst Alex Song is a minor doubt for the trip to Norwich with a knock collected against Liverpool in midweek. Vandenbroucke revealed that Manuel Lanzini is “only a few days away” from returning to training and also explained the reasons behind Cheikhou Kouyate’s absence for the Hammers’ trip to Carrow Road this weekend:

“Cheikhou Kouyate lost consciousness during a challenge with Liverpool defender Jon Flanagan. He came off the pitch with mild concussion and was taken to hospital to clear any further problems. He was cleared by a specialist and is fine now. The rules stipulate that when a player is concussed, they cannot have significant physical activity for the next six days so he will miss the weekend game against Norwich.”

The Scout Says: In light of the injuries to Tomkins and O’Brien, Sam Byram is afforded a great opportunity to stamp his authority on the right-back berth in the coming weeks. Pitched at 4.8, the ex-Leeds United defender could emerge as a tempting Fantasy prospect over a favourable pair of fixtures (nor, SUN) if he can display a capacity for attacking returns. Considering that Kouyate has been ruled out of the Canaries match-up and Song is a doubt, the Irons will likely retain a 4-2-3-1 set-up. Looking further ahead, Lanzini’s imminent return to the starting XI should cement that formation as the favoured one, with the fleet-footed Argentine likely to displace Victor Moses on the left, with Dimitri Payet operating in “the hole” and the in-form Michail Antonio manning the right flank. Certainly, it will be interesting to observe whether the likes of Antonio (three goals and five assists in eight) or Lanzini (two goals in last three full matches) can usurp Payet (four successive blanks) as the most popular route into West Ham’s attack.

Niasse close to Toffees debut

After undergoing a week’s full training, Everton’s new recruit Oumar Niasse is primed for a Premier League debut at home to West Brom. Speaking on the Senegal international’s chances of featuring at Goodison Park, Roberto Martinez said that there’s a possibility:

“It could. He had one full session with the team before the Stoke game but I thought it was probably a bit too early [to involve him]. This week has been completely different, he has had a really good working period and all he needs is some good solid work before he can compete in the team. The Premier League is a competition that you have to be ready in order to have an impact. It is important he gets the time and the understanding he needs but, at the same time, I have seen he is desperate to be involved.”

The Scout Says: In acknowledgement of the fact that Romelu Lukaku and Ross Barkley are sure-fire starters in their respective berths, Niasse will be tussling with a glut of midfielders for minutes on the wing. His arrival comes at a time when Tom Cleverley (three assists in two) and Aaron Lennon (three goals and one assist in four) have flourished on the flanks and turned in some impressive displays that have been key to the Toffees’ recent turnaround. Unfortunately, Niasse’s classification as a forward effectively renders him a non-factor on the Fantasy scene and merely lessens our options in the Everton midfield.

I think I'm either going to bench Kane, or switch him for Lukaku and give myself a benching headache again. It's like Russian roulette - benching vardy last week paid off, but I fancy him against arsenal.

        Alexis - Ozil - Mahrez - Firmino - Alli
        Vardy - Kane - Kun

Benching Kane over Alli would be a risk, but Alli's away form is fantastic.

Oh god, bench headache indeed. Don't get Lukaku though, he has a blank in GW27. I guess you don't have your AOA anymore ?

Kane is on penalties and City's defense is quite shaky... Huge ownership too so quite a risk.

I know it sounds crazy but maybe bench Özil...? Leicester's defense is in superbe form, and I'm pretty sure you'll cover most of Arsenal attacking points with Sanchez.

Fair point. The thing with Ozil is (similar to your williams point below) one assist and he's basically on 8-9 points. I fancy goals in that game whereas City may tighten up. Either way yes, I wish I saved AOA for now 😀

Oh well, bench the one you rationally think will score the less point, and have no regrets... Good luck!

Considering to play ALL OUT ATTACK with this team. What do you think ?

    Hennessey
    Daniels, Williams
Özil, Firmino, Payet, Alli, Mahrez Aguero, Lukaku, Kane
Subs : Butland ; Huth, Aldeweireld, Dawson

    Thanks!

Go for it - but play Toby over Williams. He is (Dann aside) the most dangerous defender in the league, and look at what Huth just did.

Thanks, very ood point! Toby and Huth are both more dangerous than Williams.

But Williams vs Southampton could be 9 points though, he's a bonus magnet when he gets a clean sheet...

True, but I think that is unlikely. They keep letting in the odd goal, and Southampton are the favourites in this one.

Huth could do it again, he's done it at Spurs and City. Higher chance it backfires heavily though. Who knows.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Bottom of the Page Quote competition

About time we refreshed our quote at the bottom of the page. These wise words from Abreu 42 have remained in place so long as they have so perfectly described fantasy football.

“All players will blank a few times during the season. When almost all do it in the same Gameweek, it is tough to take, but that's just the dark side of probability.”

But I think its time for a change to freshen things up.

What phrase do you think best describes either being a Fantasy Football manager or perhaps how this season has gone.

We'll pick the best one over the next few days to be our new bottom of the page quote.

Magic is just undiscovered science, and some successful "casuals" may actually turn out to be unrecognised geniuses.

Casual, like maverick, is a term often used for those who do things differently.

Don't look down on casuals. Every one of them probably knows something that you don't.

That sounds a bit like the famous Bill Shankly quote: "Some people believe football is a matter of life and death, I am very disappointed with that attitude. I can assure you it is much, much more important than that."

In a game rife with the luck of chance, it's the perennial opportunity to respond to that luck, the chance to play the new frightful hand you've just been dealt, which makes this game what it is: a game pinned on the principle of hope and the permanent glimmer of tomorrow. The 'fantasy' in fantasy football should never succumb to the reality of last week: always be childlike and hopeful, and imagine what next week could be

You're all looking at me, you're going, "Well yeah, you're a success, you've achieved you're goals, you're reaping the rewards, sure. But, oi Doolittle, is all you care about chasing the Yankee dollar?" Let me show you something I always keep with me, just a little book - 'Collective Meditations' - and it's a collection of philosophers, writers, thinkers, native American wisdom...which I...and it's really showing you that the spiritual side needs as much care and attention as the physical side. It's about feeding the soul, yeah? Evolving spirituality. And a...foreword by Duncan Goodhew! So... Can I read one-which I think..."If all men were to bring their miseries together in one place, most would be glad to take each, his own, home again, rather than take a portion out of the common stock." It's saying, for the first time, you know, the grass isn't always greener on the other side, don't look over your neighbour's fence and go "ooh he's got a better car than me, ooh, he's got a more attractive wife." We all wake up and we go "oh, I ache, I'm not 18 any more, you know, I'm thirty ni- you know, I'm in my thirties, I'm not-", but so what, at least I've got my health. And if you haven't got your health-if you've got one leg, at least I haven't got two legs missing. And if you have lost both legs and both arms, just go "at least I'm not dead!"...I'd rather be dead in that situation, to be honest. I'm not saying people like that should be... you know, put down...I'm saying that, in my life, I'd rather not live without arms and legs because... I'm just getting into yoga...for one thing. So...

Remember how life is so easy and everything falls into place with a great job, beautiful wife/husband, and everybody is jealous of your success? No? Then remember this the next time your captain fails and none of your defenders get a clean sheet. It's just fantasy's way of telling you that fantasy is real. Fantasy is Life.

Fantasy Football is the great game that manages to level everything. Whether it's your coworker that's simply banking on Giroud and Pelle as a result of their face rather than their heading, or the person who claims he doesn't try but spends hours researching, the difference comes down to whoever uses ignorance or intelligence to pick the right leader for their team, beautiful or not.

Some of the greatest feelings a man can ever feel

      - the birth of his first child,
      - getting married,
      - becoming the owner of his own home,
      - captaining Aguero on a five goal haul,
      - getting promoted at work.

There was a very witty quote from your good self Jonty about 7 or 8 Scoutcasts ago, which flew completely under the radar. When consulting your goals imminent table to assess who you wanted to bring in (for Vardy I think), your quote: 'if you're not on the list, you're not coming in'. Probably not worthy of the bottom of the page out of context, but deserves a mention nevertheless.

I did some homework to help myself and counted away points of my midfielders and attackers, who play away this week, to finally make a decision who to bench.

    1. Mahrez - 8,83 pts in season, 5,00 last4 - 9,33 last6 - 10,00 last8 - 6 DD (double digits)
    2. Alli - 6,81 in season, 8,00 in last4 - 8,83 last6 - 7,12 last 8 - 3 DD
    3. Firmino - 5,5 in season, 6,25 last4 - 5,00 last6 - 6,25 last8 - 2 DD
    4. Payet - 5,33 in season, 4,25 last4 - 5,66 last6, 5,25 last8 - 2 DD

    5. Vardy - 5,69 in season , 2,50 last4, 3,83 last6, 4,62 last8 - 1 DD
    6. Kane - 5,41 in season , 6,75 last4, 5,66 last6, 7,37 last 8 - 2 DD

When it comes to midfielders all have good stats. Mahrez in spite of last big haul has a dropping tendency which is probably caused by lack of penalties or missed penalties in last few games.
Payet - looks so-so, probably not a stand out captain choice although I wanted to give him the armband.

Because of form, Vardy is losing last available spot. He was scoring lately but at home. Even if he does something it won't probably be a big score. He did that only 1 in season. He plays against very good home Arsenal defence and his scores were much better at the beginning of the season.

    Conclusion - Bench: Vardy
    Captain: i have no idea

All the choices are wrong imo. There are always some pros, but I think picking Vardy I can minimize the eventual loss. He usually has a goal or assist away, he also had 3 blanks. I count on that.

        Prefer to play Mahrez.

Vardy got some really good underlying stats. Some of Mahrez's monster hauls came from pens.
I'm saying that your approach seems to be the one that's worked the best this season. Just really worried with benching a pen kicker for a team that gets so many pens as Leicester. And the pens often arrive when defenders foul Vardy

Only one Mahrez haul was from pens - Everton. He had also double digits against Stoke. Apart from that 4 dd not involved penalties.

But you're right Vardy should be ahead of Mahrez. They got 7 penalties!!! every 3 games they have penalty, and Gabriel is easy to make one. Mahrez's 14 points against Man city won't be repeated this week.

After 15 Mahrez points against WBA I benched, I decided to play Mahrez every time no matter what. And I did untill City 🙂 but I'm afraid I'll continue

I firmly believe that getting 15 DGWers is an impossible dream. I've been playing this game for longer than anyone can care to remember, and I've never managed to get 11 who play twice (which is all you really needed pre-Bench Boost chip), despite trying really hard on a number of occasions.

But it will be a huge one so alot of teams involved. IF your TV is high enough surely you can get 15 out there who can play twice.

You can probsbly get 15 who look like they might play twice - but you'll almost certainly get at least one, probably more, who will get injured or dropped/rested. Plus if you're going to BB then your wildcard is the week before, which has to reduce your chances of picking the right 15 (although you will be able to swap one of the for free should they get injured on your wildcard week). I just think it's a good idea in theory but will take incredible luck (far more than anyone deserves) for it to work in practice.

              9 years, 11 months ago

Of course 11 is possible - I consider myself unlucky that i didn't get 11. But I'd wager that you did it by Wildcarding on the actual week, and not the week before, and your 4 benchers were throwaway picks too. Trying to get 15 a week ahead of time is a degree of difficulty that will lprobably prove too much. Like I say, nice theory but there will only be a handful out of the 3M+ teams that manage it.

I am not getting why you think its so hard. WC week ahead of schedule is no problem imo. You would be pretty unlucky to get a player injured from your wc team imo. On top of that would be pretty easy getting a front 8 who are likely to start every game – eg the likes of Lukaku, Aguero, Vardy, Mahrez etc. don’t forget this will be nearing end of season the league will be tight and every point matters.

Defenders and GK will be the easiest to pick for 2 games so that’s 7 players just there.

                1. Pasqualinho
                  • 16 Years
                  9 years, 11 months ago

It won't be hard to pick. But it'll be near-impossible to get all fifteen starting twice - but go ahead and try - you might get lucky. Plus we're not even getting in to the fact that in GW35 you'll lose half the players as there will be semi-final blanks to cope with - so what you may gain in 2 or 3 extra DGWers in GW34 you'll more than likely lose in players for GW35. That's why I question the strategy - it may prove better to just WC in 34 to increase your chances of 11 doublers and have 4 players on the bench who are more likely to play in GW35, and use your BB another time.

But whats better using it now and making the most of the WC over a prolonged period or using for that one MEGA DGW?

Im going for the latter because I think its more fun. With the blanks in GW30 you could make serious ground by WC right now

If you do it the week before can you have the wildcard active as well as the bench boost chip or would you need to wildcard 2 weeks before and activate bench boost the week after for that GW?

if DGW is 34 for example. you would WC is 33

Thanks, yeh I'm just wondering if you can activate both the wildcard and bench boost in the same week?

Cheers, that's what I thought. So for you original post for the blank gw 30 would you wildcard GW 29 and then activate bench boost GW 30?

GW30 seems like a poor week for bench boost

have wildcarded after several red arrows and a fall from 50k to 100k.

    butland, rudd
    toby, huth, fonte, azpili, smith
    ozil, sanchez, payet, alli, mahrez
    kane, vardy, aguero

my initial thoughts are giving payet and sanchez another week or two before moving on. feel free to tear it apart! thanks

Benched Mahrez past 2 weeks, 25k to 100k, so why am I benching him again?

You were right to bench last week as his form justified this, but not this week.

Don't think his form is better now. He had 28 touches, 1 shot, 1 chance and unfortunately for those who benched him, everything he turned into points.

        But his form is so-so

psychological - everything would normally scream a leicester player away at Arsenal is an easy benching.
But nothing's normal this season Leicester are 5 pts clear, just mullered Man City away, Mahrez is the top FPL scorer by a significant margin.

I am extremely impatient. The more i wait, the more the "reasonable me" is taking over and telling me to get a SOU defender.

Well I hope the Costa transfer goes well for ya, but not at the expense of Aguero points as I still kept him! I'd take a goal from Aguero + BAPs and a Costa hattrick 🙂

I'm seeing a lot of Moreno to Southampton defender transfers this week, however with Moreno having pretty much the best away fixture to have isn't it better served saving and transferring Moreno out the following week?

A lot of tricky moments short term. With GW30 looming and a fair chance he could play against Chelsea I would be loathe to move out a possible starter.

      My predictions for GW30 are
      Stoke Soton certain
      Lei Newc certain
      Bourn Swans likely
      Liv Chel possible

Therefor, I will buil to GW30 with those fixtures a priority. I will only take in the first 2 for GW26 but probably wait until the FA cup 5th round results.
