Chelsea’s trip to Blackburn last week was the final straw for many Fantasy managers. Week after week, we’d endured the defensive failings of Jose Bosingwa in the hope that his attacking returns would prove dividend but a place on the bench at Ewood Park prompted plenty to jump ship.

With clean sheets a rarity almost right across the board, Bosingwa’s forward raids always offered hope. A goal, a couple of assists and 7 bonus points early on kick-started a bandwagon that added 0.8 to his 5.5 starting price but as the gameweeks passed, his returns diminished. No clean sheet since the season opener at Stoke, 10 points in his previous seven appearances, part of a back-four that were swept aside at home by a ruthless Arsenal performance- the wheels had fallen off in spectacular fashion.

Saturday’s game certainly suggests the Portuguese player is no longer a first-choice pick. It seems as if Andre Villas-Boas has come to the same conclusion as the likes of Carlo Ancelotti before him- Bosingwa, for all his attacking merits, weakens the Blues back-four considerably. Branislav Ivanovic moved from the centre to take over- the Serb excelled at right-back last season, producing 4 goals and 5 assists compared to Ashley Cole’s zero goals and 5 assists on the opposite flank.

The installation of Ivanovic at full-back proved an instant success- an assist, clean sheet and 2 bonus points returned 11 Fantasy points and more than doubled his points haul for the season. Bosingwa owners are now on red alert and with a two-week international break now upon on, he’s already slipped in price as the “Transfers Out” rack up.

We take a look at both players’ performances at right-back in the previous two games to ascertain the difference in their respective contributions:

Average Positions

A look at the Chelsea average positions from each game shows Bosingwa (17 above) pushed up slightly higher than Ashley Cole (3) on the opposite flank against Arsenal, with John Obi Mikel (12) in a deep position similar to the left-back’s. While Cole and John Terry (26) stayed close together on the left, the gap between Bosingwa and Ivanovic (2) at centre-half was far greater, with Bosingwa’s forward runs leaving Chelsea exposed all-too-often.

While the Blackburn game (below) shows Ivanovic (2) virtually as high up as Bosingwa was against Arsenal, everything is relative. Here, Mikel (12) is level with the Serb and is closer to Ramires (7) than he was against Arsenal. On the opposite flank, Cole (3) is pushed up far higher than the previous game, as is Frank Lampard (8), with Chelsea using the left flank to better effect this time round.

Passing

A comparison of each player’s passing in the respective games is perhaps surprising. Bosingwa made a total of 47 passes against the Gunners, while Ivanovic produced 63 at Blackburn but 17% of Bosingwa’s came in the defensive third compared to just 7% of Ivanovic’s- with the latter far more defensively secure, you’d perhaps expect it to be the other way around.

Going forward, too, there’s an unexpected outcome- 36% of Ivanovic’s distribution came in the final third, compared to just 21% of Bosingwa’s- as a result, he bettered the Portuguese star’s crosses (5 to 3) and produced double the number of goalscoring chances. Bosingwa’s tendency to drift inside is highlighted by 24% of his passes coming from a more central position, whereas Ivanovic’s greater positioning offers better balance and maintains the team’s shape- only 7% of his distribution was away from the flank, with 2% coming from a corner.

A look at each player’s “Preferred Passing” offers a perfect insight into their respective mind-sets. Against Arsenal, John Obi-Mikel linked up with Bosingwa the least of any of the Blues back-four; he received 7 passes and played 4 to the right-back whereas against Blackburn, Ivanovic interacted with Mikel more than any Chelsea defender, playing 11 passes and receiving 15.

Bosingwa’s attacking outlook saw him make only 1 less pass to Ramires, in the right midfield role, than he played to Mikel- Ivanovic, on the other hand, made just 4 passes to Ramires in comparison to his 11 to Mikel, a clear example of his more cautious approach.

Tackling

The best illustration of each player’s contribution to the Chelsea cause is shown by the number of and, critically, position on the pitch of each of their tackles in the respective games. The comparison highlights the flaws in Bosingwa’s game- he made 10 tackles against Arsenal but only 3 of them came in his own half. Ivanovic’s instant solidity on the right flank and reading of the game is summed up perfectly in the above diagram- he made 14 tackles, with only 3 in the opposition half.

Shots Conceded

Chelsea conceded 13 shots against Arsenal and 12 against Blackburn. Looking at the stats alone, it seems like there was little defensive improvement but closer examination as to where the shots arrived from, shows a substantial difference. At home to the Gunners, Villas-Boas’ side were ripped apart- 12 of those shots were inside the box, with just 1 outside their own penalty box. Away at Blackburn, only 4 of Rovers’ attempts were inside the box, with 8 of the host side’s efforts from distance in comparison.

Clearly, the step up in solidity was marked. Unfortunately for Bosingwa and his Fantasy owners, given the thorough and analytically sharp mind of Villas-Boas, it seems highly unlikely that this will have gone un-noticed.

I heard there is a jan WC. What does it mean? Is it a surprise WC given to us, meaning we will have 3 in a season in total?

Not a surprise. There was a january wildcard last season to. It's for the January transfer window, you can use it anytime within that window, if you don't use it, you lose it.

The WC in week 2 was a bonus because FPL cocked everything up in week 1. There should only be 2 a season, one you can use anytime and the January one.

    hey guys

Accidently confirmed instead of cancelled 3 transfers when i was seeing what i might be able to do late next week, for an 8 point hit. Is it worth WCing?

    The three trasfers were

    Johnson->Drenthe
    Hernandez-> Dzeko
    Warnock->Jones

    This leaves my team

    Vorm (Given)
    Richards, Jones, Walker (Raylor, Brown)
    Drenthe, Ramsey, Silva, VDV (Dyer)
    Dzeko, Ade, RVP

not sure if its worth wcing or not to get rid of the 8 point hit, but if i did i might look at replacing Given and Ade aswell.

I have 0.2 in the bank.

    Is it worth WCing?

    Thanks

I wish I had him in my team for all his highscoring home games in the first 11 weeks.

That's the wrong way to go about doing a WC. You have 5 games within 5 days between 18 Dec and 2 Jan. That's the time when injuries and rotation make FPL a fantasy nightmare. You often only have a couple of hours between fixtures to ascertain who are injured etc before the next fixture.

So nobody knows what lies ahead over that 2 week period. Look at the next 3-4 fixtures I would say and ensure you don't have to do a trade next week(the week after you WC).

why people said Kompany ia a season keeper?
how many points he scored at his price? even now Man city have tough fixture to come.
i have Enrique (at 5M), Simpson, Raylor (from the beginning) and their points outscore Kompany now, they are cheaper, i think Enrique is a season keeper, not Kompany.

I have been a bit gutted I haven't had Kompany tbh.. He will come into my team shortly as although he is not a season keeper IMO he will get more points as a defender than most over the course of the season

      A) Nailed on
      B) City have one of the most assured defences in the league.

The reason Kompany has dropped behind a bit compared to the likes of Raylor and Enrique is cuz of the red card (minus points) and subsequently missed the next game. Obviously thats his fault but worth pointing out.

Especially with Rooney helping in mf and Vidic back. ManU have tightened up(so has Chelsea) the CS will come now. They usually average +/- 15 a year and I can't see why this year will be any different.

In your opinion what are some of the cliches in soccer commentry or soccer in general?

    like...
soccer is a game of two halves
if you don't shoot, you can't score goals
we're taking it one game at a time
never finished until the ref blows the whistle
david silva gives 110% every game

    keep them coming..

Get Odemwingie in if you are looking for a cheapish striker, we have got superb fixtures now until Christmas. He hasn't really shone much so far but our fixtures have been horrible from the first week of the season tbf, the poorer defences in this league can't handle him and we have Bolton, Spurs, Wigan and Blackburn in the next six who are all very leaky.

I would do but it would be nice to see him back to full fitness and hitting a bit of form before giving him a strikers berth.

But fully agree he's very tempting if that happens with the fixtures you have coming up.

I'm struggling to think of a 3rd striker for my WC team and he would fit the bill perfectly. if only....

Spurs aren't leaky! After the hammerings from United and City (without Walker, Parker and King on the field) we've conceded less than a goal a game with some tough matches... Newcastle have been the only others to put two past us. West Brom do look a generally good bet 'til Santa comes though.

I have Agbon as well and he's done me well since I bought him at 6.6 but could be the time to get rid as he's not as good on the road and Villa have some tough away fixtures coming up.

However, I'd be more concerned about Rooney. 12.0 on a currently out of form, reverse out of position striker seems bad business to me

Why are people considering Cleverley as an fantasy option? Does he have some kind of spectacular opta stats that don't convert into fpl points? I know he hasn't played much but he did play 90 min in a game where ManU scored 8 goals and got 2 points out of it. I would rather have Moses and that's something.

In my opinion, people getting him in are either ManU fans or confusing fpl with real life.

      I shall field his defence.

One - 5.3 for a united attacking midfielder who is certain to start is very cheap.

Oh look I did it in one!

Attacking midfielder? You need to check his average position.

He has played basically 3 full games and in two other games he's been substituted for some reason (injury in both I guess). During his time on pitch ManU have scored 14 goals, Cleverley has 1 assist and all in all 2 shots on target (339 mins of gametime).

Certain to start is not a good argument when he's certainly injury prone and you can't rely on him to get minutes if you have him in your team. Stats don't say he's attacking at all. And I wouldn't say he's cheap when you can have Dyer, Allen, Moses with less money.

        I rest my case.

          All fair points.

The only evidence I'm really going on is pre-season and we're so far from what we were then I guess it's a pretty lose link for me to cling on to! However during that time he was getting more assists and even scored I think (?), whilst getting forward a lot more. Like I said, that team is quite a way from the way we are playing now, so it may almost be irrelevant but I am clinging to it nonetheless 🙂

Again, the old argument as to whether its better to get a cheap player in a great team or a great player in an average one.

To my eyes anyway, this is a lot like getting Lucas just because he plays for Liverpool.

Yes, he's affordable, but he's cheap for a reason.

And the reason ain't because those kind chaps at FPL wanted to gift us a high scoring Man Utd midfielder at a bargain basement price.

For just a fraction morethan what you'd pay for Cleverley you could get Milkman or Eagles, instead , both of whom will benefit your team a lot more pretty much every week.

Plus, Cleverley appears to be another injury prone player.

If you got lucky and there are a bunch of DGW's around the January wildcard you could overstock on DGWers in one WC collect the points and then WC again to sort out your team. Think a couple of people here tried that last year.

Pilkington wasn't exactly prolific in the Championship either, as I recall?

Most people will be going with Bendy there, Welbeck is still too much of a rotation risk, especially when Rooney moves back to striker. Graham plays for Swansea and a lot of people already have 1 or 2 swansea players so wouldn't be keen for more. Also Bendy has some good fixtures coming up

What do people think about Lampard? is he going to do a RVP on us and catch us all unawares? Chelsea may find a bit of form and he could rake in the points. Would now be the time to invest before this bandwagon gains full momentum, I get the feeling it will only take one more good performance from him then everyone will want him in their team.
