We round off the day with our usual pre-Gameweek members article, as we cast an eye over the captaincy conundrum ahead of the midweek round of fixtures. As always, we analyse the Opta data for the main contenders and assess the team statistics and Rate My Team’s reckoning, before rounding off with our opinion on the current poll standings in light of the data analysis, including our view on differential captains.

The Captain Poll

Manchester City’s penalty shoot-out win over Liverpool at Wembley has perhaps had an effect on your armband decisions this week. With Sergio Aguero playing 120 minutes on Sunday ahead of an Anfield re-match with the Reds, the Argentine is – for once – amongst the chasing pack behind Jamie Vardy.

With West Brom set to pay visit on Tuesday evening, the Foxes frontman tops our Captain Poll for the second successive Gameweek due to his outstanding home consistency – Vardy has scored or assisted in 11 of 13 appearances in front of his own supporters.

At the time of writing, Romelu Lukaku and Mesut Ozil tie for second spot with 14% each. After enjoying the weekend off, the Belgian now faces a trip to Villa – he bagged a brace in a 4-0 win over the Midlands outfit earlier this season and should be fully refreshed to take advantage of Remi Garde’s strugglers.

Meanwhile, Ozil delivered a goal and assist at Old Trafford and now looks for a third double-figure haul in four at home to a Swansea side with one clean sheet on their travels.

As for Aguero, he faces a Liverpool defence with just one clean sheet in the last seven Gameweeks. The Argentine has already netted against Jurgen Klopp’s side in the league and with the Reds sweating over the availability of a number of central defenders, he could be in line for returns at Anfield in a match that City surely have to win to remain in the title race.

There’s a handful of differentials lurking further down our poll for those willing to take a punt. Diego Costa is selected by just 7% for Chelsea’s trip to out-of-sorts Norwich, though there remains question marks over his minutes after Guus Hiddink admitted he could be rested for one of the next two matches with the Champions League clash against PSG in mind.

Marko Arnautovic will be looking to replicate his weekend 15-point return at home to a Newcastle outfit that have lost five road trips on the bounce. Riyad Mahrez, Alexis Sanchez and Ross Barkley offer viable alternatives to their aforementioned team-mates, whilst United’s man of the moment, Marcus Rashford, seeks a third successive brace at Old Trafford as Watford pay visit on Wednesday night.

Next up, we now delve into the data over the last four matches to shed further light on the situation and assess the validity of the current crop of poll results.

There was huge hype when Klopp joined. How do you rate his performance so far? What are the biggest changes in playing style you've seen?

Rodgers would have done as well and would have won the cup the other day too.
Harshly let go really, big do about nothing.

It's all been a bit mediocre tbh, but to be fair to Jürgen he hasn't had a proper transfer window yet, apart from a poxy January window when it's incredibly difficult to do anything...

Biggest change in terms of playing style is probably the intensity.

      1. Piggs Boson

Do you think their high intensity will be a problem now games are close together?

We'll soon find out. Don't think he's got a problem with rotating but there's not exactly a great list of options either, which highlights how he's not had a chance to build his own team yet.

That team needs time no matter who is there

I reckon he's sizing everyone up and as soon as summer comes he'll offload anyone that he doesn't feel fits the bill

You'd imagine Benteke will go but there's so much money tied up in him I doubt FSG would allow such a big loss. A new spine will probably be bought; GK, CB, CM, ST. Perhaps a LB.

I reckon Lovren, Lucas and Sturridge will be sold for about £24mil total and he'll try spread that out over the positions above

      1. fickle
        • 10 Years

they would never sell sturridge that cheap

          9 years, 9 months ago

Only looking at about £12-14mil for him imo

He's too injury prone, if Charlie Austin can only be sold for £4mil and he's the same age I wouldn't expect any more than £12m for Sturridge

          1. fickle
            • 10 Years
            9 years, 9 months ago

Sturridge is amazing though, they could never get a striker of that quality for 10m. granted his wages are 150K too but if he's fit he's easily one of the best goalscorers in the league, probably only behind aguero

That "if fit" part is a huge if though. How many games has he played over the last two seasons? It's very worrying when he's your clubs 1st choice striker.

Lot of time for the guy.. real pedigree also but i said he bit off much more than he can chew with Liverpool and nothing that has happened since has changed my view.. Would be unfair to judge him properly until he has had a chance to bring in his own players though although for his sake lets hope he sets the bar a little higher than Steven Caulker

    Sanchez, Ozil, Mahrez, Payet
    Kane, Lukaku (c), Aguero

    McCarthy, Alli, Daniels, Smith

Aye, also he has always been capable of falling into that "third-pass syndrome" especially when teams sit deep. Too often he is the one releasing the wide players, (sterling, navas, wingbacks) who then cross to Kun. That said, I still think he can haul against Aston Villa and Norwich regardless of this lolz

    Schmeichel

    Fabianski / Jags / Williams / Ighalo

Currently need 3 more players to field a starting XI in gameweek 30. I have 3 FT left.

    Three options:
    1. Ighalo to Lukaku this week, resulting in a -4 in next couple gameweeks to get XI starters gmwk 30. (bench silva this gameweek).
    2. Ighalo to Kane and bench Silva (no hits down the line)
    3. Save and start Silva (no hits down the line)

      Moreno v MCI
      Bellerin v SWA

I'd sell Moreno personally. At least he's cheap and easy to get back in if needed down the line. Both have a blank, and true Liverpool have 2 DGWs at some stage, but it is Moreno after all

Is it possible that Milner plays LWB?

If Moreno is a risk, then he should he priority. How are you for GW30?

Just 2 transfers for a full 11 and have 2 FT this week but probably only using 1. Other option is to sell Sanchez but like Bellerin, might not be wise before a home game vs Swansea

Moreno, he's a troll with his attacking stats and Liverpool don't do clean sheets often

Everything is set and ready, not looking bad for gw30 either, but I have some issues

    Hennessey, Foster
    Dier, Wolly, Bertrand, Fuchs, Smith
    Mahrez, Ozil, Barkley, Payet, Alli
    Aguero, Kane, Vardy

    1FT, 0,8 ITB

    A) Barkley --> Arna
    B) Barkley --> Willian
    C) Payet --> Arna
    D) Payet --> Willian
    E) Save

Will easily have 11 for GW30, so what to do with the spare FT this week?> Payet to Silva?
Targett to VVD to remove the rotation risk?

    Hennessey Butland
    Fuchs Daniels Targett Bellerín Alderweireld
    Arnautovic Mahrez Özil Payet Alli
    Vardy Agüero Kane
    2FT 4.2m
    cheers

Who's the best midfielder to bring in at the moment in your opinion? Must be available for GW30.
I'm thinking Arnautovic? Already have Mahrez and Alli.

    Team for the GW

    Butland (Ruddy)
    Bellerin, Ivan, Bertrand (Toby, Dann)
    Mahrez, Ozil, Payet, Alli (Ayew)
    Kun, Kane (Ighalo)

    2FT and £0 ... Do I do??

    A Ayew to Arnie
    B Ighalo to Rashford
    C Dann to Huth
    D A, B and C for -4pts

Just Dann > Huth, although I think Fuchs is a better pick for his baps and occasional set pieces but it is negligible

Could you afford Iggy to Vardy?, Think Rashford has great potential but as an FPL pick I think he'll prove too inconsistent a la early-season Martial.

    Vardy Kane
