It’s time to turn to our usual pre-Gameweek members article next, as we cast an eye over the captaincy conundrum ahead of the weekend’s round of fixtures. As always, we analyse the Opta data for the main contenders and assess the team statistics and Rate My Team’s reckoning, before rounding off with our opinion on the current poll standings in light of the data analysis, including our view on differential captains.

The Captain Poll

With a home match against Aston Villa on his agenda, Sergio Aguero is the runaway winner of this week’s Captain Poll.

Despite blanking at Anfield in midweek, the Argentine has still served up six goals in as many matches and has been backed up a massive 72% of voters against a side that already has one foot in the Championship and has picked up three points from their last 13 away matches.

Given that overwhelming margin of victory in the Poll, it’ll be a very brave Fantasy manager that goes against the City striker in Gameweek 29 as Manuel Pellegrini’s men attempt to salvage their flagging title bid.

Harry Kane is placed in second spot with a mere 5% of votes ahead of the north London derby. A win over injury-hit Arsenal would take Spurs six points clear of their rivals, though Kane’s lack of consistency at home – producing points in only five of 14 appearances at White Hart Lane this season – is a real cause for concern.

With eight goals and four assists in ten, Diego Costa (3%) has the form to rival Aguero as Chelsea welcome Stoke to the Bridge. Guus Hiddink conceded earlier today that he’ll start the Spain international tomorrow but went on to say that he may not play the full 90 minutes ahead of next week’s crucial Champions League clash with PSG – thus placing unnecessary doubt over Costa’s armband claim.

The likes of Gylfi Sigurdsson (2%) could be one to consider as Swansea play host to Norwich. With five goals and an assist in nine, he was afforded a second-half sub outing in the 2-1 win at Arsenal and will be fully refreshed to torment the Canaries’ dire defence.

Roberto Firmino, meanwhile, is backed by a mere 1% ahead of a trip to Palace, despite bagging four goals and as many assists in his last five outings. Mesut Ozil, Alexis Sanchez, Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez are also being overlooked as Arsenal and Leicester hit the road in a bid to reignite their respective title tilts.

Are the current standings backed by the underlying statistics? Let’s start breaking down the player and team data for their respective last four matches and shed a little more clarity on the situation.

Snazzy. Didnt know they'd made it to Wales yet....... 🙂

If you can forgive that comment...would love your thoughts on:

      Sanchez + Payet --> Silva + Siggy (2FT)

Kinda set on the first one...but struggling with Payet -> Siggy. I'll have to make that move next week to field 11 anyway...BUT will lose any flexibility in case of injuries etc. (i have no back-up)

Should i just be sensible and play Payet, and keep 2 for next week?

People getting Kompany, not worried about him getting injured, since he has been very injury prone recently?

Surely, Hart is the safest option for the DGW from the City defence

injury record a concern yes. but of the backline also most likely to nick a goal and/or baps. and the team as a whole plays better when their captain is barking orders. so, while a risk, happy to play it.

Gone with Otamendi over Kompany. The 0.4 extra is worth it for a player who's started the last 14 in a row.

I know it's mad but I really can't see Bournemouth keeping a clean sheet this week. Newcastle not only do better at home but have had more rest and will be desperate for a win.

Play Vincent. He is basically a 75% chance of a clean sheet at home to Villa.

@GB...I didn't know you was a Plymouth fan. We older Blackburn fans have fond memories of our clashes in 1974/75 im the old division 3. Many fans put our 5-2 win over you right at the top of pile as most memorable match along with the title winning match at Anfield. It was fantastic, look it up.

I'm banking on a NLD scorefest.

Though it could be tight and Toby could keep a cs if playing devil's advocate.

I think there will be goals though, and mistakes, there's too much at stake. And the chip seems frigging useless.

      Grand Playoffs update

As we move deep into the semi finals, both ties are neck and neck after two matches. This means that each tie will still be live going into next week's round of blank matches so all four manager's planning will be put to the test. Of course that means a win this week will be especially important for the less prepared among the final four.

The semi final scores after two gameweeks are as follows

      The Buck Stops With Me
      54, 43, __, __, __
      31, 49, __, __, __
      Mr Flibbles

      Bert Zeiner-M
      51, 32, __, __, __
      46, 35, __, __, __

VVD, Fuchs, Van Aanholt, Daniels, A Smith

    Mahrez, Sanchez, Payet, Firmino, Khazri

    Aguero, Kane, Vardy

    What to do?
im considering Kompany or Wimmer at the back, but who for?
i've considered All Man C midfielders, Wijnaldum, Gradel, Sigurdsson, but not sure who goes from Payet/Sanchez (Khazri's already going).

Costa > Kun this week? Costa still likely to get rested and Kun to explode against a Championship side?

    NIZ SUPER X1
Ok people. Been pondering over this all week. Current team

    Butland
    Dier Fuchs Daniels (Monreal, Taylor)
    Arnie Mahrez Payet Sanchez (Alli)
    Vardy Kun Kane

Have 1.9m in the bank and 1FT.

Really want Siggy and Silva but will need to take -4. What would you suggest? Should I do Monreal to Kompany? Or Arnie to Siggy? Sanchez has 1 more game to get some decent points or else he is out next GW.

    Please help

    Need some help boys:

    Butland
    Fuchs, VVD, Toby
    Arnie, Alli, Mahrez, Payet
    Kun, Kane, Vardy

    Bench: Henn, Bellerin, Moreno, Lingard
    5.1m ITB
    1FT

Was thinking Moreno > Kompany or Lingard > Ozil (use some of those funds). I dont really like Arnie at Stamford Bridge either..

    Thoughts?

Plus, there's a blank before the doubles. And Swansea play in the blank.

    Hi Scouts.
Ranked 1M and playing heavy catch-up, 100pt behind cash prizes…
Gambling on the last 3 GWs but with small returns, and now a raft of injuries.

    Kasper
    Otamendi - Koscielny(inj) - Fuchs
    Sanchez - Eriksen - Payet - Mahrez
    Costa - Kane - Austin(inj)

    McCarthy - Stanislas(inj) - Catchart - Richards

    2.2M ITB and 1FT

Best way to go regarding GW30?
    Any input would be welcome

    Good luck!

      Austin should be a priority.

Since Vardy is out I'd go Paloschi or Afobe

After that move out either Sanchez or Stanislas

Get Paloshi and Daniels for Kosc and Austin. But first get Aguero.

You might have to consider playing Catchart if you don't want to take a hit and field 11 useful players this week and next.

I would deal with Koscielny first so you can keep 2m+ ITB for next week's FT.

I'd do Koscielny > Williams this week and play Catchart. Not great playing him against the Foxes but that game could well be low-scorer or even a 0-0 in which case you're laughing.

Then you can consider the best player to take a hit for next week.

Koscielny to Van Dijk, Austin to Vardy for a hit. Tried but can't think of anything even remotely more sensible. Wildcard asap, prob week 33 and bring in at least 9 or 10 dgw'ers. 100 points not impossible but your team needs an overhaul and damage limitation until then.
