Arsenal fall to defeat in Barcelona to tumble out of the Champions League. Nicolas Otamendi is optimistic of returning for City this weekend, Jan Vertonghen is nearing his Tottenham comeback, whilst Alberto Moreno is a doubt for Liverpool’s Europa League clash against United this evening.

Wenger’s men sent packing

Arsenal succumbed to a 3-1 defeat (5-1 aggregate) at the Nou Camp last night. Mohamed Elneny drew the visitors level in the 51st minute with his maiden goal, while Alexis Sanchez supplied the assist. Arsene Wenger resisted the opportunity to rest key players, given that the likes of Sanchez, Mesut Ozil, Hector Bellerin and Laurent Koscielny all lasted the distance. Mathieu Flamini started alongside Elneny in the double pivot but was replaced by Francis Coquelin just before the break due to an injury. Young Alex Iwobi was surprisingly handed a start on the left flank, with Sanchez moving over to the right, as Wenger opted to bench the likes of Theo Walcott, Olivier Giroud and Joel Campbell.

The Scout Says: With a mouth-watering double Gameweek 34 (CRY, WBA) on the horizon for Wenger’s troops, Sanchez’ 11% ownership will be encouraged that the Chilean wide man has delivered attacking returns (one goal, two assists) in three of his last four starts across all competitions, illustrating his growing influence. Although most managers will opt for the consistency of Mesut Ozil, Sanchez’s superior capacity for explosive hauls renders him a compelling differential ahead of this weekend’s trip to Goodison, where Everton boast the top-flight’s worst defensive home record. Wenger’s decision to start Iwobi last night is certainly worth monitoring. Priced at 4.5 in FPL, the youngster would offer a very intriguing route into their attack if he can nail down a starting berth over the run-in, given that Sanchez and Ozil are 10.8 and 9.8 by comparison.

Van Gaal issues injury update

Ashley Young and Cameron Borthwick-Jackson returned to training on Wednesday but, according to Louis van Gaal, are not fit enough for Manchester United’s Europa League clash against Liverpool. Antonio Valencia, meanwhile, will also miss out, despite building up his match sharpness for the Under 21s last week:

“Ashley Young has been two months away but Borthwick-Jackson is another case. He has been about three weeks away so that is different. For every player, it is difficult after an injury to come back in the team and I give always the example of Marcos Rojo, who was the exception because I didn’t have other full-backs so I forced him to build up his capacity in the first team. He struggled, as you have seen, and I have given him 10 minutes, 20 minutes, 50 minutes, 70 minutes and then, at the end, 90 minutes, but he is now very tired yet he has to play maybe tomorrow. It is not easy for someone who has been out and maybe operated, so it is also a big transition for these kind of players. “

The Scout Says: By virtue of Man United’s favourable home ties (AVL, CRY) in their double Gameweek 34, they’ll be under greater scrutiny over their next three match-ups (mci, EVE, tot). Defensively, the return of the above-mentioned trio should increase rotation at the full-back slots, ensuring that the attractively priced Marcos Rojo (5.0) remains a risky proposition. Ultimately, Chris Smalling and David De Gea represent the only secure routes into a defence that charts bottom for goals conceded (seven) and top for clean sheets on home turf (nine).

Otamendi optimistic on weekend return

Nicolas Otamendi is confident that the dead leg he sustained against Dynamo Kiev will subside before the Manchester derby this weekend:

“It’s very similar to a dead leg injury I have had before – I will have a test [on Wednesday]. The blow wasn’t that serious but it was better not to continue and come off. The test I hope it shows nothing and am hopeful I can be there on Sunday.”

The Scout Says: Given that Vincent Kompany was also forced off on Tuesday, a return for Otamendi would be welcome news for Manuel Pellegrini, whose side have now chalked up three straight clean sheets ahead of Sunday’s visit from United. Although City are currently one of only five sides with a double Gameweek 34 and fixture in Gameweek 35, Kompany’s possible absence may deter many from investing in their rearguard, with rotation in the full-back berth lessening our options further. Having started 23 of the last 24 league matches, there’s no doubt that Otamendi is a secure starter under Pellegrini but at a price of 6.5, his average of 3.6 points per appearance – the fifth-highest amongst City’s backline – hasn’t proved value for money.

Vertonghen nearing Spurs return

Mauricio Pochettino hinted that Mousa Dembele and Christian Eriksen will be rested during Tottenham Hotspur’s midweek clash against Borussia Dortmund:

“We will see about Eriksen, but maybe he needs to rest a little bit. Maybe Dembele too. They have some things, but not big issues. But maybe they are not available tomorrow.”

The Argentine boss also confirmed that Jan Vertonghen and Clinton N’Jie could be back in contention after the international break, given that they’re expected to return to training next week:

“Jan and Clinton N’Jie are in a very good situation now. We expect from next week they start to train with the group and maybe for after the international break they will be available to be selected.”

The Scout Says: Considering that Spurs fielded a weakened XI in the first leg at Dortmund and subsequently fell to a 3-0 defeat, owners of Harry Kane and Dele Alli will be hoping Pochettino also takes it easy on the pair tonight ahead of Sunday’s home clash with Bournemouth. Nonetheless, with back-to-back clashes against Liverpool and United also preceding Gameweek 34, many Fantasy managers will be mulling over their Spurs quota, with some potentially eyeing up exits for Kane, Alli and Toby Alderweireld to take advantage of other teams’ busier schedules. Turning our attention to the North Londoners’ recovering players, Vertonghen’s return to the fold would eliminate Kevin Wimmer as a budget route into their rearguard. Priced at 4.6, the Austrian has enjoyed a temporary stint alongside Alderweireld at centre-half, starting each of the last seven Gameweeks, though will surely drop to the bench once Vertonghen’s fitness is up to scratch.

Moreno a doubt for Reds

Having felt a twinge in his hamstring during training yesterday, Alberto Moreno will be assessed this morning to determine his availability for the Reds’ meeting with Man United.

The Scout Says: With a single assist to his name all season, Moreno has flattered to deceive as a Fantasy product. The Spaniard boasts some very decent underlying statistics (top for key passes and fifth for attempts among all defenders) but, in spite of a pair of doubles to follow, the gradual reintegration of fit-again Jon Flanagan’s raises questions marks over Moreno’s security of starts over the run-in. Ally this with Martin Skrtel’s imminent return to first-team action and it’s fair to say Jurgen Klopp has plenty of defensive options at his disposal. If Liverpool progress past United tonight, the German may continue to rotate his options to cope with the packed schedule, which may well leave Simon Mignolet as their only safe source of defensive coverage for our wildcards.

Monitor price changes - neither Kompany nor Bellerin apper to fall/rise before deadline, so you might as well hold until next GW.

    Bottomed out on last page:

Is there any kind of consensus on what teams have the best DGW's?

I'm looking at GW 34 and thinking United, Arsenal and West Ham have the most appealing fixtures. Now, bear in mind this is only one man's opinion, I'm sure there are many reasons why people would argue otherwise - the blank in 35 for United and West Ham - United's patchy (at best form) - the fact Arsenal only have 1 set of DGW fixtures which might put people off investing in 3 assets etc.

In GW 37 then I think United again have some nice fixtures (albeit that they are away), West Ham (again) and Liverpool (again) have fixtures that at least allude to the theory points will be scored by your fantasy assets.

Now I know there is consensus on 3 Liverpool players being a necessity pretty soon - should we all be angling to get 3 United/West Ham & Liverpool players and the blanks in 35 be damned?

I'm late to this party having just had a look at the state of the Union, so forgive my tardy thoughts on the matter cowboys.

      You have most of it.
An important point is whether or not you still have Bench Boost. If yes, then you might want to aim for 15 DGW players in GW34, if not (like me) you only really need 11, meaning it's easier to field a full team in GW35

3x Pool is the key to 11 DGW players in 37 bar hits.

          'Earning' you net -8 points.

The player you took a hit on better perform... Anything less than 8 from him and you've lost points.

Maximising players doesn't always equal maximising points - having Liverpool players taking up 20% of your squad places for 6 GWs looks horrible IMO.

you may have to think deeper than this
price fluctuation between now and GW33 for instance my result in Bellerin being priced out of his desired team , resulting in having to reluctantly compromise.
I suggest if you intend to WC 33 and want bellerin , it may be best practice to get him in asap anyway.

The one question i have, didnt mess with the DGW teams very much - what is the benefit to holding your WC for later and not using it GW33? The teams having DGWs in 34 also have it in 37 am i right? So just WC into a good team before 34 and then just use FTs to sort the team if needed or take a hit or two in some case of emergency?

    1. BabyB
      • 12 Years
      9 years, 9 months ago

means it is easier to keep spurs/lei players for gw 33 and 35. By going for wc in 36 you can get 15 dgw players for 37 and have no issues with blanks the following gameweek.

Neither is perfect. I think the safe option is to wildcard in gw33 and follow the rest of FFS. Think i am going for gw36 just to be different and take a risk.

By taking 2 hits I can have this team for GW34:

    Cech* (Henn)
Gabriel* / Smalling* / Williams (Fuchs, Smith)
    (TC)Sanchez* / Firmino* / Milner* / Payet* (Alli)
    Kun* / Lukaku* / Martial*

Then, by doing single transfer Lukaku > Kane I have this team for GW35:

    Cech (Henn)
Gabriel / Williams / Fuchs / Smith (Smalling)
Sanchez / Firmino / Milner / Alli (Payet)
    Kun / Kane (Martial)

    WC in GW36

What do you think gents ?

Do you currently have Kane? If so (and you can afford to), I'd play him GW34 rather than taking a hit to get Martial, and then you don't have to make your proposed GW35 transfer and do whatever suits at the time instead.

Woy: Milner > Milner with FT?

LvG: Aguero (in a DGW vs AVL & NOR) > Cameron Jerome for a hit?

LvG would be able to pick a couple of Man U defensive cheapies for the DGW

    *Quick question*

If you have say 3 FT before you wildcard, after your wildcard, will you still have those 3FTs or does it reset to 0?

You can't have more than 2 FTs , and it resets to 0 when you play WC

    1FT 7.8M any transfers you'd recommend?

    Hart
    Alderweireld Williams Fuchs
    Alli Mahrez Siggy Payet
    Aguero Kane Vardy

    McCarthy Jagielka Smith Arnautovic

Only 4DGW players at the moment but do have all chips!

Armband has to go on Kane this week right? Only other person I might put it on is Siggy but he doesnt have the mega-hauling potential of Kane

Kane as I don't own Siggy. If I owned Siggy it would be on him.

Aguero might do well in Manchester derby. Between him and Kane for me

It's weird, for some reason I think Aguero is more likely to score than Kane, but Kane if he does score will get a higher score. If that makes sense.

Basically backing Aguero to get 1 goal over Kane, but if both do I'd back Kane to go on and get more points whereas I feel Man Utd would just hold posession and bore the game to death trying to get an equaliser without shooting

What would you do for DGW34 if it was between playing Hennessey and taking a hit for another keeper?

Hi guys, basic question. If you have 2ft saved and then use your wildcard, do you still have 2 ft the following week or does it reset to 1?

If I do Kompany back to Bellerin this week, is this a viable DGW34 squad with 3 FT's leading up to the event meaning 8 DGW players potentially? Thinking of Sanchez(TC), then WC GW36, BB GW37...?

              Forster/McCarthy

              BELLERIN Wimmer Huth NYOM Cook

              SANCHEZ(TC) OZIL Alli Mahrez King

              AGUERO Kane Vardy

Or shall I do Kompany>Williams and WC GW33??

Save transfer this week, play Wimmer Huth Nyom and then do Kompany -> Bellerin next week.

Your chip plans are identical to mine.

Which three strikers are people thinking of going with in GW34?

I'm looking at Aguero Lukaku Ighalo but that would mean playing with 1 striker in 35, or using a transfer getting Lukaku/Ighalo out even though they have DGW37 and are good options for that week too ....

One thing I've been wondering: is there a case to use the WC on GW32 instead of GW33?

I've used the RMT tool to compare my current team with what I would get after using the WC, and the predicted scores for GW32 are pretty similar, and this is the only week to consider for this argument. I know there are also downsides to this, but my reasons to consider a WC on GW32 are the following:

                  a) Fixtures: Some of the main contributors to our teams don't have great fixtures. Leicester (SOT), Spurs (@LIV), Daniels (@MCI). Notable exception is Stoke (SWA). By comparison, some of the teams to be targeted for the DGW have fixtures that look slightly better. Arsenal (WAT), West Ham (CPL), Newcastle (@NOR), WBA (@SUN) are some examples, while Liverpool (TOT), Man U and Everton (playing each other) are less clear cut.

                  b) Prices: I know we have a lot of flexibility in drafting a whole new squad with the WC, but still we'd like to maximise the squad strength. There have been plenty of cheap midfielders doing well this season, but most of them don't have a DGW34. Also bear in mind that teams without the WC will start getting the likes of Payet, Firmino, Lukaku, etc right away, so they may cost extra by GW33. Coupled to the fact that there is an international break after GW31, that's an extra long period of time for prices to change. It also allows you to nab some players who have a chance of going up by 0.2 before GW32 and then dumping them for a little extra cash.

                  c) Keeping a singleton for GW33: this strategy also allows you to keep someone you think will do well on GW33 (like Fuchs for example, or Kane) and then transferring him out only for GW34.

Has anybody else considered this? What are your thoughts?
