City’ Joe Hart could be set for a quick return to action, though Raheem Sterling could be out for the season. Stoke’s Jon Walters withdraws from Ireland duties, Alberto Moreno is back in full training for Liverpool, whilst Sunderland’s Lamine Kone withdraws from Ivory Coast duties due to injury.

Mixed News for City

Reports suggest that Joe Hart is hoping to shake off the calf complaint that forced him off against United last weekend in time for Manchester City’s Champions League clash against Paris Saint-Germain on April 6. Meanwhile, Yaya Toure has withdrawn from Ivory Coast’s meeting with Sudan after aggravating a heel issue, whilst Raheem Sterling is set to be sidelined for six-to-eight weeks after limping off against the Red Devils with a groin injury.

The Scout Says: Assuming Hart’s prognosis is accurate, he would miss the Sky Blues’ trip to Bournemouth on April 2 but be in contention for their double Gameweek 34 (che & new), making him the cheapest secure route into Man City’s defence across the two road ties. Although Manuel Pellegrini’s men tasted defeat in four of their previous five match-ups, it’s well worth noting that no team has recorded as many shut-outs on their travels (eight). On the flip side, only three teams have chalked up fewer goals in road fixtures (13) than Man City, which paints a bleak picture of their attacking potential over the double. Given that Sterling is now sidelined and Toure (one goal in seven) and David Silva (one goal and three assists in nine) have failed to live up to their lofty valuations, Manuel Pellegrini will be hoping that Kevin de Bruyne has fully recovered from his knee injury in time to spearhead City’s bid for a top four finish.

Walters Pulls Out of Ireland Squad

Jonathan Walters has been ruled out of Ireland’s friendly against Switzerland with a hamstring complaint but is expected to recover in time to face Slovakia next Thursday.

The Scout Says: Although Walters notched a goal and assist against Watford in Xherdan Shaqiri’s absence last time out, he lacks the regularity of starts and promise of a double Gameweek to register on our Fantasy radar. Marko Arnautovic – who ranks second among midfielders for goals (10) this term – represents the choice route into the Potters’ offense, but Stoke’s tricky run (liv, TOT, mci) beyond a home tie against Swansea City should encourage his 18% ownership to re-invest in a double Gameweek midfielder. By that same token, Jack Butland’s 27% ownership – who’ve profited from a solitary clean sheet in nine outings – might also consider cutting ties after the Swans match-up.

Moreno Back in Contention for Reds

Speaking from Liverpool’s warm-weather camp in Spain, Jurgen Klopp confirmed that Alberto Moreno will return to full training today:

“It’s really big for us. We let him come in this morning, training light – no real challenges, he could pass a few balls and things like this. But it was really good and he felt absolutely nothing, so from tomorrow he is completely back in the race, which is very important for us.”

The German head coach also offered an update on Roberto Firmino, stating that the Brazilian midfielder is “in a good way” after missing the Reds’ trip to Southampton because of a hamstring injury.

The Scout Says: Given that Liverpool face a double in Gameweek 34 (bou & EVE) and 37 (WAT & CHE) are guaranteed a fixture in Gameweek 35 and play at home for four of their next five fixtures, their Fantasy assets are in high demand. Firmino’s excellent form (five goals and four assists in six starts) has propelled him to the top of many manager’s shopping lists, while Philippe Coutinho (three goals in five outings across all competitions) and Adam Lallana (three goals and as many assists in six) have also staked strong claims for investment with their recent output. At the other end of the pitch, Jon Flanagan’s return to action renders Moreno and Nathaniel Clyne rotation risks during their double, ensuring that Simon Mignolet is the only nailed-on starter. Regardless, the fact that only five teams have recorded fewer home clean sheets (four) than Liverpool lessens our faith in their defensive prospects.

Schweinsteiger sidelined for United

Bastian Schweinsteiger is set for a spell on the sidelines after scans confirmed he suffered knee ligament damage during training with Germany yesterday.

The Scout Says: With a single goal and assist to his name this season, it’s fair to say that Schweinsteiger has failed to flourish since arriving at Old Trafford. Assessing the viable midfield options within the Manchester United camp, Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard are the only ones that factor into our thinking. The former carded one goal and two assists in his last five starts, while the latter – who’s priced at just 4.3 – has amassed four goals in 1120 league minutes this term, underlining his potential value as a budget fifth midfielder during the Red Devils’ double Gameweek 34 (AVL, CRY). Although United were much maligned for their paucity of attacking threat in the first half of the campaign, the fact they netted seven goals in their previous three home encounters suggests they’re capable of punishing the obliging defences of Aston Villa and Crystal Palace.

Kone Concern for Sunderland

Lamine Kone will play no part in the Ivory Coast’s upcoming head-to-head against Sudan after picking up an injury.

The Scout Says: Although Kone is kindly priced at 4.3 and has a double Gameweek 37 (CHE & EVE), the fact that Sunderland haven’t earned a clean sheet in 16 league outings ensures that Fantasy managers will look to mainly steer clear of their budget defenders. The one exception is Patrick van Aanholt. Owing to his attacking threat (five goals and three assists) and the Black Cats’ decent trio of fixtures (WBA, LEI, nor), the 4.7-priced Dutchman could emerge as a profitable differential for anyone brave enough to invest in the Wearsiders’ backline.

Sessegnon Notches for Benin

Stephane Sessegnon scored the opener for Benin as they ran out 2-1 victors over South Sudan in their African Cup of Nations qualifier.

The Scout Says: Although he’s started ten of West Brom’s last 12 league outings, Sessegnon has struggled for an end product and managed just one goal and two assists all season. Prior to their shock home loss to Norwich last weekend, Tony Pulis’ side had been in fine form, though, with the 5.1-priced Craig Gardener – who has chalked up two goals and an assist in his last four outings – arriving on one or two radars ahead of their Gameweek 34 double. Looking at the fixtures, though, Tony Pulis’ side hit the road in four of their next five (sun, mci, WAT & ars, tot), and with three of those trips against a side sitting in the top four, investment in the midlands outfit looks unlikely.

I cannot believe the herd mentality here. A few guys recommend a GW36 WC instead of 33 and everyone panics and hops on.

Terrible idea and if you actually spent just 5 minutes looking at the fixtures its crystal clear.

Nothing. But if you look at the fixtures and likely events (rotation etc) its evident gw33 WC and BB 34 is by far the better option.

My point is people hoping on changing their decision because there has been a hot topic on it or someone is trying to convince themselves, without actually doing research themselves

Crystal clear? For it makes sense to WC in 36, my team is good for 34 and can utilise the fixtures and TC a big hitter with a good fixture. Not sure id be confident TCn Lukaku or Firmino. Also as pointed out by Jarvish yday if you WC in 33, your legacy players may be rotated for the 37 DGW

Mm I take it Ighalo is the enabler,
                    I'm contemplating this fwiw:

If I sold Kane > Ighalo I could get this out for -4,
                    Henna,
                    Rojo/Otam/Bell/
                    Sanchez (TC)/Özil/Firmo/Payet
                    Luka/Ighalo/Aguero
I could always but Kaneback...with 2ft-WC would clean it all up anyway in 36-Thoughts?

I've also been on 36 since the start. Don't want to lose my Leicester and Spurs players with their prime fixtures in GW35. I'd agree that the fixtures look better for a BB in 34, but they also look better for TC. If you take 34 on it's own then BB probably looks best but you also have to consider that there are another 4 GW's to go after that and you have to balance the gains you make in 34 against losses made in the final 4 GW's.

Not sure it is crystal clear myself. Bench Boost defenders in 34 are limited to Arsenal and Man Utd really, where as Bench Boost options in 37 could be Sunderland, Liverpool, West Ham, all of whom have more attacking defensive options than Arsenal and Man Utd.

Couple that with being able to realistically ditch Aguero in a 36 wildcard means I can put a lot more money into the rest of my squad for the last couple of games and really utilise that bench boost more.

You're more than welcome to go for a 33/34 combo and play out 3 extra games which doesn't include the players that have got us this far. As someone who is chasing the top 10k I need to be a little bit different and would more than welcome the 'smart' people doing the 'obvious' earlier wildcard, be my guest.

I don't think there's anything in it frankly and I think 35 will be more important than anyone on here realises.

    City updates for you...

Hart is ACTUAL targeting Bournemouth game, and has a decent chance of doing so, but wait for news next week.

Kdb SHOULD be available for Bournemouth and IS FULLY fit.

Nasri and Delph BOTH fully fit and if they get through an u 21 game this week will also be available for Bournemouth.

Vinny has damaged his OTHER CALF, and it is not a recurrence of his bad one surprisingly.

    No news on Otamendi

Because United play 4 games in 10 days around DGW34, and will want to win all of them.

Their DGW fixtures are against such poor opposition that they could easily rotate one or two of the "regulars" for the "fringe" players.

All speculation, but Darmian is FAR from "nailed on" and is a risk, not a definite no, just a risk.

Also I think Valencia was injured for a lot of the season..

Apart from Utd and Arsenal, there are no DGW defenders I really like. Trouble with that is, you'll want Arsenal attackers as well (maybe even Utd as well, purely because of Villa).

May even get suckered with Moreno again. Not so bothered if they only play one of the DGW but they need to be nailed for GW35 which is the frustrating bit.

34 if you only have 4 DGW players at present.

Depends on your FT available. If you got 2 at the moment you could use those plus the two others up to GW34 to bring in 4x DGW players, giving you 8, allowing you to role them out alongside Kane, Mahrez and either a Spurs or Lei defender (assuming you have all three).

You can then hold fire a bit longer and wildcard in 36 for a 37 TC (Payet?) option.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Why are some teams so bad away from home?

Given that Aguero will be a popular captaincy pick during the double Gameweek I thought it would be good to get your views and any good stats on whether playing at home or away really matters. Man City during that double DGK 34 have two away games, where they have frequently struggled. Indeed few of Aguero's goals and big FPL hauls have come on the road. But is that too simplistic?

Have Man City failed on the road because across the entire season they have failed to live up to the high expectations they came into the season with?

Are Man City really that bad away from home?

Its a key issues that for those that avoid the armband for Aguero in GWK 34 could either bring heartbreak or joy.

And looking at other teams as well - are West Ham really better away from home? And if so are their assets best avoided for the captaincy at home? Once again, is that being far too simplistic?

I can only put it down to psychology.

The only difference is the venue.

I think it's much more of an issue with City than it is with West Ham..

I think Leicester find it easier to hit teams on the break away from home, so they're a bit less adventurous when attacking at home.

Home/Away does make a big difference for some teams more than others. People sometimes hypothesize it's down to playing different tactics, but I think it's more simple than that. It's a mental thing - confidence is ridiculously important in football - and works in funny ways.

My understanding of how it works is that teams at home tend to have the ball more so the away team relies more on counter attacks. This of course is a very simplistic observation and would involve teams of equal style, strength and ability.

Factor in the qualities of certain teams and things change. Does it mean that City is bad at maintaining possession and dictating attack away from home and aren't good enough exponents of counter attacking (the usual strategy for away teams)?

Why teams should play different whether they are at home or not I have no idea why. Some seem to do it and others play the same way regardless of whether they are at home or away.

I am constantly amazed how 2 teams of 11 players (though applies to many sports) laying against each other on a grass rectangle can be so influenced by the venue.

I read some research on it that modelled it down to 2 key things, the biggest factor being referees are influenced by the crowd and second most factor being the players motivation to gain the crowd approval.

Not sure why some teams influenced more than others, perhaps city fall over more or have less leaders able to motivate themselves and the team without the crowd support

2 Premier Leagues, 2 2nd place finishes, 2 League Cups and an FA Cup is hardly the record of a team of mercenaries that doesn't care.

They definitely used to care, but they definitely don't care enough this season. Last season was mediocre at times as well.

Wow what a great big club Man City have become. Where would they be today if it wasn't for referee Mark Halsey. 1999 play off final, The cheat added 5 minutes injury time until City equalised. Went on to win, after the game Halsey was seen celebrating in the hotel bar with Man City fans. Must be proud of what they've achieved since money bags come to party.

Funny thing is Aguero was better away from home then at home last season.

It was basically the other way round pretty much.

If he can score heavily at home and away next season while staying injury free he could smash the 300 point mark.

I think it's clear to see they play better in front of an empty stadium 😉 . I think injuries have played a part in it . Aguero essentially missed gw's 9-19 , Silva missed the first 13 gameweeks , De Bruyne has missed from 25 and is now just back in training , Sterling missed the first 8 weeks . Nasri has missed the entire season too .

I mean I haven't got an answer of why City are better at home than away it could be any number of factors but maybe injuries explain why they have been that much worse away from home

No idea - it's always an interesting concept because you tend to seek out the Home Captain, but sometimes we see (e.g. Aguero away vs. Spurs historically) that some players really perform away, or we have the occasional upset.

A lot would seem to depend on the form of the team; if they are performing well, being at home does not seem to be too much of a factor in performances (e.g. Spurs this year), but if they are performing in a mediocre/poor way, the expectation of the home fans appears to be a negative impact (e.g. Arsenal) if there is no early goal.

I'm likely to captain Payet this week but I'm a bit worried about it - hoping that by my logic they will perform well now they are "on a roll" but let's see...

I am seriously considering going Agueo-less for the double and maybe getting Silva/KDB. That extra 3m or so comes in really handy.

Think being Aguero-less leaves you really exposed to a lot of non-FFSers/"casuals" who are still remnant in the top10k and play rather nonchalantly.

Aguero is the obvious TC choice for the non-FFSer in the double game week - if they see that he has two fixtures, I'm sure that a few people in my league would not (and, indeed, will not) hesitate to stick the armband on him without a second thought.

If he performs you do lose out - I can't see many other alternatives that could get him out for me. I am tempted by KdB and taking a punt on Rashford instead for those lovely United DGW fixtures, but we'd need to see if he hits the ground running after his injury or is Aguero like in his need to regain match sharpness before producing again.

          Just my 2 cents..

It's because when playing at home 95% of the crowd are cheering you on and this tends to give you a lift. The opposite is true for the away team whereby they tend to lose confidence as nobody seems to be cheering for them. The same even applies to the referee who can be unwittingly influenced into siding with the home team giving them an unfair advantage.

I just think City haven't been as good this season. Their fullbacks are aging and they're over reliant on a 32 year old injury prone Yaya. Also, Silva, Kompany and Aguero have all suffered reasonably long stints out of the team.

Their season long poor away form probably just reflects the fact that they're not as good going forward as they have been in the past. It's easier to defend against them and teams that look to shut them out are more likely to do so.

He has 90% chance to get himself injured by next GW.
He's been so frequently injured on Intl. duty.

His injury might just be a blessing in disguise for FPL owners, for once.

Baresi was a genius. Struck fear into the hearts of attackers.

This guy seems a bit less tactical about how he goes about his business, like a bad Pepe 😛 haha
Striking fear into their hearts alright, but only for 30 minutes of the game 😉

At least it inspired his team to a 3-2 win! 😀

He was a master of the cynical/tactical foul. Always stopped the attacks whilst making it look like it was accidental! Probably helped that he looked about 20 years older than he was so the ref probably thought he was always being caught out for pace and let him off 🙂

If a team is better at home/away it has to come down to the managers tactics.

Some are too Gungho where as others go more defensive.

I can't imagine Pellegrini changing his tactics (especially as he is leaving soon) thus I expect City to continue to suffer away from home.

NO way Aguero is getting the armband for my GW34.

Hi all, first wildcard draft for 33:

    Mignolet DDG
    Rojo Bellerin Gabriel Delaney Byram
    Lingard Mahrez Milner Ozil Payet
Afobe [GW33: vs. Villa; GW34: swap to Lukaku] Kane Aguero
4.1itb [1.6 itb after Lukaku in]

I'll have Afobe vs. Villa, then remove for Lukaku for DGW. I'd then move out one of the non-playing defenders in 35.

I also have the most dire Liverpool picks (Milner, Migs) because I think they're the most likely to play the whole 180mins in the context of the fixture congestion they've got.

Thinking of Afobe because I reckon I should try to "follow the Villa" and United have them (along with Palace) during their DGW, hence double stack on defence and Lingard as the cheap mf who plays forward.

Any thoughts / critiques / improvements you can spot?

    Thanks in advance 🙂

      I like it.

Just a few thoughts, sure you want to punt on Gabriel? Could be a fantastic option don't get me wrong, but if he somehow manages to lose his spot do you have a contingency plan? Also, think Mert won't play for the DGW games?

I prefer Lanzini to Lingard personally but Lingard IS cheaper and has good fixtures.

Could I tempt you with a punt on Gradel (MCI / avl) and then swapping to a Liverpool mid of choice pre-GW34?

        Cheers for replying IM!

Gabriel yeah it's a question mark to be honest - I really like Arsenal defensively going in, and I'm not sure about other assets from other clubs. He could easily become Cathcart maybe at 4.6, but I need to be careful about GW35.

Lingard is just because the two United games (Villa, Palace, both home!) are just too good to not have at least some vestige of attacking cover!

I was thinking Gradel, actually, and locking in Lukaku's price as an alternative! Everton have Watford, too, right? Tbh any of my midfielders (other than Mahrez) and the Lukaku spot are the ones which can rotate, so it doesn't matter who I remove/keep.

I GUESS the best would be to have Gradel in for Lingard, given that United have Spurs away on GW33, then swap Lingard in for him.

I do like Afobe, though, could absolutely smash it vs. that Villa defence

        Thanks IM 🙂

Looking at WC33 to allow the following BB in GW34, thoughts please?

    DDG - ROBLES
BELLERIN - FUNES MORI - SAKHO - WARD - Huth
    FIRMINO - PAYET - OZIL - SILVA - Mahrez
    AGUERO - LUKAKU - WELLBECK

No keeper for GW35 but can live with that as Everton will have 5 games left in last 3 GWs.
9 players for GW35 but will have 2 FT.
