With Fantasy managers facing a crucial few weeks as we enter the final stages of this season, we’ve given our Watchlist rankings a refresh ahead of the upcoming double Gameweeks. Liverpool’s Simon Mignolet remains on top of the keeper’s ladder in light of five home matches in the final six, whilst Arsenal’s Hector Bellerin and Crystal Palace’s Scott Dann head the defenders charts due to their propensity for points at either end of the pitch.

GOALKEEPERS

Given Liverpool have the most favourable fixtures over the next six Gameweeks (STO, bou & EVE, NEW, swa, WAT & CHE, wba) according to our Season Ticker, it’s no surprise to see Simon Mignolet still topping the charts this week. The Belgian still only sets us back 4.9 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), and while Jurgen Klopp’s men have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last three league matches, their two double and lack of a blank boost their defensive appeal.

With three shut-outs over the last four Gameweeks, along with three bonus points, Man United’s David de Gea is currently the top-flight’s form goalkeeper. The Red Devils face a hugely appealing double Gameweek 34 (AVL & CPL), although the fact they face a tough trip to Tottenham this weekend and a blank in Gameweek 35 does make it imperative to pair the 5.8-priced Spaniard with a keeper who faces a fixture in Gameweek 35, bearing in mind he will be worth holding on to as he faces another double in Gameweek 37 (nor & whm).

Everton’s Joel Robles sees his stock rise this week with the Toffees facing two consecutive doubles (wat & cpl, SOT & liv) over the next two weeks. Coming in at just 4.3 in FPL, the former Wigan goalkeeper looks a useful option for those wildcarding this week, given his price tag, although Everton are one of those teams who do face a blank in Gameweek 35. The rest of their schedule (BOU, lei & sun, NOR) is also pretty kind, further adding to the Spaniard’s appeal.

Another budget goalkeeper who is a contender for our 15-man squads is Crystal Palace’s Wayne Hennessey. The Wales international only sets us back 4.2 in FPL, although the Eagles’ fixture list (NOR & EVE, ars & mun, blank, new, STO, sot) isn’t very favourable after Gameweek 33, particularly bearing in mind they haven’t registered a clean sheet in their last 12 league matches. The former Wolves stopper may see limited investment then, with Robles and Karl Darlow perhaps having slightly more appeal as a second keeper.

It’s Newcastle’s Karl Darlow who comes next on our ladder, with the 3.9-valued keeper’s prospects aided by the Magpies double Gameweek 34 (SWA & MCI), which is followed by a fixture in Gameweek 35, albeit a tough trip to Liverpool. Rafael Benitez’ side also face reasonably kind clashes in Gameweeks 36 and 37 (CPL, avl) that could prove crucial to their survival bid, so although it’s hard to trust the Newcastle defence too much given they’ve failed to keep a clean sheet in their three matches under Benitez, Darlow’s bargain price tag makes him an obvious target, particularly for those who are wildcarding this week and using their bench boost chip in Gameweek 34.

Adrian is another riser in our latest update with West Ham facing a favourable home match-up against Watford in their double Gameweek 34 (lei & WAT), while the Hammers also have a double Gameweek 37 (SWA & MUN). The Spaniard perhaps looks a tad expensive at 5.1 in FPL, given the Hammers have only kept two shut-outs in their last seven matches, along with the fact they face a blank in Gameweek 35, though there’s little doubt he could bring in plenty of points during those two doubles.

Watford’s Heurelho Gomes is another goalkeeper who faces a double Gameweek 34 (wba & whm), but considering the Brazilian sets us back a fairly hefty 5.0 in FPL, it’s unlikely he’ll attract too much investment. That’s in part due to the downturn in form for the Hornets, having won just one of their last eight in the league, with their primary focus now perhaps on their FA Cup semi-final against Crystal Palace with Premier League safety nearly assured. Quique Sanchez Flores’ side do face a pretty favourable run of fixtures between Gameweeks 36 and 38, though (AVL, liv & nor, SUN), where they face three of the bottom four.

With Petr Cech expected to be back in the starting XI for Saturday’s trip to West Ham, the Czech Republic international remains a viable option for FPL bosses given that Arsenal face a very favourable double Gameweek 34 (CPL & WBA), while they also have a very kind run-in (sun, NOR, mci, AVL), including a fixture in Gameweek 35 when so many other teams face a blank. At 5.8 in FPL, though, the attacking upside of Hector Bellerin (6.4), or the bargain price tag of Gabriel (4.3) may provide better use of one of our three Arsenal spots.

DEFENDERS

There’s no change at the top of our defenders ladder, with Arsenal’s Hector Bellerin in outstanding form on the back of a goal and three assists in three appearances. With the Gunners very kind upcoming schedule (whm, CPL & WBA, sun, NOR, mci, AVL), including the double in Gameweek 34, the right-back looks set to deliver plenty of Fantasy points. Already transferred in by 33,000+ FPL bosses this week, seeing his price rise to 6.4, the Spaniard, who leads all defenders for penalty box touches over the last four matches with 17, looks likely to find his way into many of our five-man backlines.

Scott Dann’s goal threat sees us promote the Crystal Palace centre-back to second spot in our rankings. The Eagles face two consecutive doubles, as already touched upon, and given he leads all defenders for shots from inside the box (six) over the last four matches, the 5.7-rated defender looks to hold plenty of upside in the short-term. Defensive returns are likely to be hard to come by against Arsenal and Man United, though, while the Eagles also face a blank in Gameweek 35.

With Everton the other team to face consecutive doubles over the next two weeks, we’ve moved Phil Jagielka up towards the top of the Watchlist. The England international offers us a cheaper route into the Toffees backline at 5.1 in FPL, and looks less likely to suffer from rotation than John Stones and Ramiro Funes Mori, while Seamus Coleman (5.8) and Leighton Baines (6.0) may struggle to justify the extra outlay.

Also moving up our rankings this week is Liverpool’s Dejan Lovren. The Croatian has now started each of the last four and has turned in a series of impressive displays, at a time where Mamadou Sakho in under increasing criticism for his showings. At a price of 4.8, allied with a hugely favourable run-in for the Reds (STO, bou & EVE, NEW, swa, WAT & CHE, wba) makes the former Southampton man another who is making very strong claims for inclusion in our 15-man squads.

Chris Smalling continues to creep up our ladder, with the Man United defender looking the most nailed on member of the back four. At 6.5 in FPL, he may be a bit pricey for many Fantasy managers, but those plum home fixtures against Aston Villa and Crystal Palace in DGW34 could prove to be hugely profitable for owners of the England international. The fact the Red Devils also face a DGW37 (nor & whm) adds to his appeal.

Following the impressive return to form in the 4-0 win at Bournemouth, Man City’s Nicolas Otamendi is another climber in our latest refresh. The Argentine looks the safest route into the Citizens’ backline, but also setting us back 6.5 in FPL, interest in the former Valencia defender may be limited. The fixtures (WBA, che & new, STO, sot, ARS, swa) are pretty favourable, though, particularly in the short-term, so investment may well pay dividends over the next few weeks.

While Hector Bellerin looks worthy of his 6.4 valuation, his Arsenal team-mate Gabriel is a major climber up our rankings this week given his bargain 4.3 price tag, offering us the opportunity to double up on the Gunners defence. The Brazilian looks to have cemented a regular role, having started six of the last seven league matches, though there’s still a slight possibility that rival Per Mertesacker could be handed a start during Gameweeks 34 and 35 (CPL & WBA, sun), where Arsenal play three times in seven days.

As already mentioned, the appeal of Newcastle players for those wildcarding this week is high given they have a fixture in Gameweek 35, so for that reason, along with double Gameweek 34 (SWA & MCI), Daryl Janmaat continues in an upward trajectory in the Watchlist. The Dutch international also offers some attacking potential, having scored once and bagged three assists so far this term, so at 4.8 in FPL, he could be one to consider in the short-term.

West Brom’s Craig Dawson remains on our radar with the Baggies set for a double Gameweek 34 (WAT & ars), while they also face a fixture in Gameweek 35, albeit away to Tottenham. Defensive returns will be hard to come by in north London, but with the 5.1-priced defender having scored three times this season, his goal threat does make him a viable option for those using their wildcard this week.

Although Norwich’s double doesn’t come until Gameweek 37 (MUN & WAT), Timm Klose stays in our thoughts with the Canaries facing two pretty favourable match-ups in the short-term (cpl, SUN). The Swiss international, available at just 4.2 in FPL, has been racking up the points lately, registering 24 over the last three Gameweeks thanks to a goal, two clean sheets and five bonus points.

Leicester’s Christian Fuchs (5.0) and Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld (6.5) fall all the way to the bottom of the Watchlist with neither player facing a double. Even though the Foxes have kept four consecutive clean sheets, the lure of the doubles will likely see many ditch the Austrian, while Alderweireld will also earn an exodus over the next week or two as we look to load up on double Gameweek options instead.

Repost from last night, looking for a few more opinions 🙂

The All Out Attack chip actually ended up costing me points this season. Not many, but some. This got me thinking about the most effective way to use it, and I think I've got a reasonable idea about what I may try next season...

For GW1, invest all £100m in players that are strong for that gameweek only. Don't plan ahead, just build a 2-5-3 dream team for GW1. Dud defenders are typically cheaper than dud midfielders (Usually start at £4m compared to £4.5 for throwaway midfielders). I'd then use my first wildcard to build a solid, well-rounded team for the first half of the season while catching all the first week risers which will help build TV for the rest of the season.

Thoughts? Feel free to rip me apart if this is a terrible idea!

        😆

To be fair, usually use my WC pretty earlier to catch the early movers and shakers and get on the cheaper players who we were not sure would start or not

Cost me 3 points as well. I'm not a fan of the early WC so don't really like your plan. Seems a lot of trouble to go to just to have 1 extra Mid over a defender. Best just to keep it in case you have an injury crisis or awful fixtures for your defenders. If you don't use it at all I don't think there is any issue with that either.

      1. Difference is though your GW1 defence can be so cheap (as will include subs who you have no intention of playing) you can have pretty much your front 8 of choice specifically for the GW1 fixtures only.

Most people seemed to WC between GW2 and 8 this season, and didn't seem to harm the very early WC'ers much.

I didn't use my WC until GW19! I can see this plan has some merits but I just don't think it's worth it, especially as it's difficult to predict who is going to hit the ground running in GW1. Could be a few tired legs after the Euro's.

    4. This was already my plan for next season 😎

The reason I don't like it is that GW1 can be one of the most uncertain weeks. Take for example this year, Walcott was one of the players to have, then he didn't start, and your AOA chip is wasted on day 1 and you're then re-picking your team again with your WC

      1. But if GW1 is rubbish (like this year) it will be rubbish for most of the FFS'ers, and (like this year) many will kneejerk and WC GW2 anyway, so all you have really lost is your crap AOA chip.

          Fair point!

My plan was probably to not use it next year.

I'd always intended to use it this year for that moment when I had a couple of injured defenders, or a raft of blanks, but my planning has been too good 😉

I always think planning to use your WC in GW2 is stupid, even without this idea added on.. See so many people planning this in preseason and I just don't get it.

I don't think there's any or enough info gained from GW1 only that you shouldn't be able to more or less get from preseason.

    Repost for the daytime crowd.

71 of the Career Hall of Fame's top 1000 wildcarded last week. This was their template:

    Robles (70%) Darlow (51%)
    Bellerin (70%) Sakho (61%) Gabriel (42%) Dann (37%) Ward (30%)
    Payet (87%) Ozil (79%) Mahrez (52%) Sanchez (51%) Bolasie (48%)
    Lukaku (96%) Aguero (92%) Kane (21%)

notable mentions to the following who did not make the template 15:

    Barkley (44%)
    Mignolet (37%)
    Coutinho (31%)
    Simpson (23%)
    Rojo (23%)
    Janmaat (20%)

This is another tricky one as alluded to by the spread of picks but I ended up keeping Kane. I'm now looking at Kane -> Martial next week to fund Bolasie -> KdB. It'll leave me playing 442 in gw35 but I'm happy with that.

I like it. It's a strong squad its just a case of squeezing out any last drops of value. Bellerin -> Sakho and Coutinho -> Milner frees up a route to Mahrez -> Ozil/KdB if you want to go that way.

I also think you can get away Kane -> Martial this week and play a 352 if you want and it'll also free up a wad of cash for tinkering down the line. As I said above I'm happy to flip Martial in just for the DGW because the fixtures are that good. The exit plan with him then is Defoe in gameweek 35 or Deeney in gameweek 36.

Thats what i was actually thinking. The kane part at least. I bought bellerin before his .1 price rise and am happy to keep him. Not a fan of Milner eventho it might pay off. Keeping Mahrez at the moment just because of sun away... if it was anything else i would have shipped him, since i got him at 5.5

I will be playing 3-5-2 if i sell Kane this GW.

Also if i ship Kane > Martial means i can keep OZIL and have to spend 4.4 on the last defender slot. It can be Simpson, but dgw's ðŸ™

Thanks a lot for your opinion mate, appreciate it!

          Thanks, Balders.
So my 75 after wildcarding wasn't too bad then - and it could have been 93 if I had benched Adrian, Antonio and Milner instead of Foster, Aguero and Clichy (I'm only 1,987th in the Career Hall of Fame).
My wildcard squad was pretty different from that of the GW32 wild-carders in the Career HoF top 1000 template - only 7 of the highest-owned 15, plus 2 more of the others over 20% - and even more different from the templates before GW32. There would appear to be plenty of scope for varying from the templates.
But we can't really judge the long-term success of our wildcards till the end of the season - the analysis of the final results in the 'Going out with a bang' mini-league should be quite fascinating.
Next week, will you be able to quote the average scores for GW32+GW33 for GW32 wild-carders and also for GW33 wild-carders? It might be interesting to see how they compare. And perhaps similarly for each subsequent game-week, or is that too much to ask?

I could do that next week yeah, but from then on I think the subsets will blur substantially. I might put together a season in review article based on these managers after GW38 though.

I was one of the 71 (I think as my HOF rank is 800 odd).

      FWIW I went:

      Migs/Henn
      Bellerin/Delaney/Jags/Simpson/PVA
      Payet/Ozil/Sanchez/Mahrez/Barkley
      Aguero/Lukaku/Mitrovic

Raked in 88 points and 5 DGWers for GW33. I have to think Delaney goes prior to GW34 (of course I benched him last week but who wouldn't), 2 x Palace is too much with those fixtures. Ozil to KDB is very tempting though...

        Looks like this:

        Hart - Gomes
        Bellerin - Fuchs - Sakho - Gabriel - Delaney
Sanchez - De Bruyne - Payet - Coutinho - Mahrez (becoming Lanzini)
        Aguero - Kane - Mitrovic

          mid is beautiful

If I then told you that this team is in a Liverpool Supporters Club leave (my main cash league), and I'm not allowed to buy Blues or Utd, it's a pretty comprehensive spread of the best assets available, I think you'll agree 😎

I was going to double on the two Brazilians too, but there are too many other midfield options I want.

Also, this setup allows me, towards the end of the season to do Kane > Sturrridge for GW37 if he's fit and firing.

    Subs: Darlow Martial Gabriel Smalling

Planning bolasie + Lennon to Lingard and Wijnaldum for gwk34

The worst thing about WC'ing is that in you own literally everyone when drafting, then get annoyed when they score..and you don't have them.

Yep. Knowing at some stage they were in your team, but you're right, almost everyone has a place in a draft somewhere!

That always kills me at the start of the season, when the midfielder you nearly had in your team gets a brace and assist on GW1

Smalling is actually cheap when you consider how expensive Ivanovic and Terry were at this stage last season!

Yeah but at least Ivanovic and Terry banged in the goals last season.. Smalling is yet to score. Suppose some would say he's due though.

People just see his price in comparison to rest of the United defence and go 'no thanks'

What's a defender with 15 CS from 31 games and 10 CS from 15 home games worth?

and CPL and AVL in a DGW .... 6.5 is cheap, might double up with DDG!

          I paid 6.3, had him since GW11

the other thing people look at is Jags is 5.1 in comparison

But DDG and Jags costs the same as Robles and Smalling (thanks to Robles going up last night)

Hi...anyone able to advise who the last place in my wildcard team should go to?

Delaney...2dgws...but dreadful fixtures in gw34...no Delaney would mean no palace players.

Reid...dgw34 and 37...already got payet and lanzini

    Thanks

Depends on how many blanks you need to shift in 35.

Anyone fancy Wijnaldum for the doubles? Colblack back in GW34 will certainly help him play in more advance role. And has been beast at home.

Looking to do Bolasie->Wij in GW34

Really struggling to fit these all in....
Kdb/ Aguero - one of these enough?
    Sanchez - Ozil instead?
    Bellerin - Gabriel instead?
    Coutinho - essential?
    Payet - afford to lose?
    Mahrez - afford to lose?

having given it a lot of thought about gk combos..with the aim of getting everton, liverpool and united defensive cover...

    A: mignolet jags smalling
    B: robles sakho smalling
    C: ddg jags sakho

I think B is best option as i dont see jags having too much attacking threat so i expect robles to get more points whereas smalling has higher chances of a goal..

Probably all of them. Moreno is poor, Flanagan is trash.

These chips have really scared everyone off taking hits in preparation for DGWS and blanks. No harm in a few hits. I did -20 once for a DGW and got a green arrow.

it's not about the hit per se. It's who you sell to force the hit

Not sure any Palace players are worth it.

    Schmeichel - Darlow

    Klose - Bellerin - Gabriel - Walker - Darmian

    Payet - Sanchez - Mahrez - Coutinho - Anya

    Aguero - Lukaku - Kane

    Last decision..

Double up of Smalling and Rojo, or go for Lovren instead of Rojo?

    Mignolet / Robles
    Smalling / Rojo / Monreal / Gabriel / Fuchs
