FantasyBet’s biggest ever contest is coming up on Sunday as the 2015/16 campaign draws to a close. Thereโ€™s ยฃ5000 available in the Grand Finale, offering a top prize of over ยฃ1,300 with an entry fee of ยฃ33.

As usual on the last day of the season, all kick-offs are at the same time, so with entries available up to 3pm, itโ€™s possible to enter FantasyBet games after you’ve finalised your Fantasy Premier League line-ups.

While the Premier League may be over for the summer, there’s still plenty of football to keep us entertained, with FantasyBet hinting something special is in the works. Look out for their coverage of Euro 2016, which will include both a long-format competition and five-a-side concept.

If you are unfamiliar with FantasyBet it is particularly accessible for those who play Fantasy Premier League, as it uses a similar prices and scoring system.

Check out this daily and weekly fantasy guide to see how the game works.

MY TEAM

David De Gea (5.5m)
Virgil Van Dijk (5.5m)
Hector Bellerin (5.5m)
Chris Smalling (6.5m)
Alex Iwobi (4.5m)
Dusan Tadic (7m)
Juan Mata (8.5m)
Alexis Sanchez (11m)
Shane Long (5.5m)
Harry Kane (9.5m)
Sergio Aguero (13m)

KEY PICKS

David De Gea Prior to the 1-1 draw with Leicester, the Spaniard was unbeaten in five straight matches in front of his own fans. Indeed, Louis Van Gaal’s side have conceded only eight goals and registered 12 clean sheets in 18 fixtures at Old Trafford ahead of Bournemouthโ€™s weekend visit.

Hector Bellerin A home clash against an Aston Villa side thatโ€™s blanked in five of their last seven affords Arsenal the chance of a fourth clean sheet in five attempts. Bellerin has already served up five assists this campaign and his raids down the right are bound to cause the visitors plenty of problems as they prepare for life in the Championship.

Dusan Tadic Hugely impressive in recent weeks, the Serb has delivered two strikes and six assists over the last four matches. With a 70% goal involvement for Southampton during that time frame, Tadic looks set to benefit from a home tie against a Crystal Palace side with one eye on next weekโ€™s Wembley final.

Sergio Aguero The Argentine has netted in six consecutive league matches and is now just one goal behind Harry Kane in the race for the Golden Boot. Hosts Swansea have mustered only one clean sheet in six as City travel to the Liberty looking for a result that would seal a top four spot in Manuel Pellegriniโ€™s final match in charge.

LAST WEEK

My fortunes in FantasyBet have been as erratic as on-pitch events this season. The penultimate weekend saw Swansea inflict West Ham’s first defeat at Upton Park in the league since September and with a trio of Hammers assets in all of my line-ups and the armband firmly on either Andy Carroll or Dimitri Payet, it was a week with minor returns.

In low-scoring Gameweek, Teelxp won the Grand Weekend contest with 68 points. A bold triple up of Newcastle defenders combined with the differential pick of Swansea’s Andre Ayew, who scored 13 points, netted over ยฃ250.

THIS WEEKโ€™S GAME PICKS

As always the best place to start if you’re new to FantasyBet are the freerolls. There is a ยฃ50 pot available for this Gameweek in both the standard and Flash Mode – they both cover all of the matches in Gameweek 38.

The Weekend DoubleUp has a ยฃ120 guaranteed pay-out with those managers who finish in the top half of the league at least doubling their ยฃ3.30 stake.

As mentioned above, The Grand Finale is the biggest pot FantasyBet have ever offered, with ยฃ5,000 in winnings being paid out. Multiple entries are available for a ยฃ33 fee to have a chance to end the season with a considerable windfall.

THIS WEEK’S STAKE

I’m entering two teams into The Grand Finale and also place line-ups in the freerolls, the Double-up contest and entering a team into the FFScout Picks League for a total outlay of ยฃ69.30.

In addition, Iโ€™ll be going up against AZ, the Community champion in this weekโ€™s Scout Picks.

He will be taking me on in a specially set up head to head game for a chance to win free entry into a ยฃ500 Guaranteed โ€˜Big Weeklyโ€™ game worth ยฃ22. Also the eligible Community Champion who beats the Scout Picks by the highest margin every month will win a free entry into the ยฃ600 guaranteed โ€˜Bossโ€™ game worth ยฃ55.

FFSCOUT PICKS LEAGUE

Hlopchick topped the FFScout league – which covered all of the double Gameweek fixtures โ€“ last week. He emerged victorious with a massive score of 121 points; six of his players recorded double figures or more, with Nathan Redmond (18 points) and Patrick Van Aanholt (17 points) the standout picks.

Once again, FantasyBet have provided a ยฃ100 pot for the FFScout Picks League – with a ยฃ1.10 stake for entry, it is now possible to enter two teams into this contest. I will enter our Scout Picks as closely as possible, given a 15-man squad is required with the 100m budget and a captain also needs to be selected.

Feel free to go up against them this week and pick your own squad on FantasyBet.

    I'm in mini league bother..

lead by 5 but my rival has Sanchez and i think TC left..

    I have no Sanchez.

Do i take -4 to get Sanchez in for Hazard or try and counter Sanchez by bringing in Giroud?

    XI currently looks like

    DDG
    PVA Gabriel Kos
    Ozil Hazard Payet Khazri/Milner
    Defoe Carroll Aguero

Really i'd have like to have just gone Milner to Tadic..

I think Sanchez (AVL) will out score Hazard (LEI) this week, it may be boring but you could map his team, captain Sanchez and hope you have better differentials elsewhere.

Top of my ML by 5 points and my nearest rival has KDG.

Captaincy tactic I'm considering for next season: Always choose a midfielder unless form and fixtures really make that a poor choice.

Midfielders score more points for goals and get a point for clean sheets. Forwards do not get clean sheet points, and they get fewer points for a goal. So on a point-for-point basis, midfielders seem to offer more points than strikers. We *think* that strikers have the potential to score more goals and be more explosive, but does that hold up over a seasons worth of points? I've analysed my gameweek history this season for captaincy picks. It's not MIT-level scientific quality but it'll do (for me) and thought it might be interesting to some others.

    Some OVERALL stuff first:

    General captaincy returns:
FWD returns: 119 from 19 - 6.26 points per game
MID returns: 133 from 17 - 7.38 points per game

These figures are the figures BEFORE doubling - they are the points the players actually scored - so it's accurate to say my midfield captaincy picks made, on average, more than a point a game. Or in other words, I was at least a point better off every game I made a midfielder captain rather than a striker.

    GENERAL FWD vs MID comparison:
How many times did ANY single striker score the MOST points? 10 times
How many times did ANY single midfielder score the MOST points? 27 times

Now, this figure needs a little context. Like most, I play 3-4-3, so there are 1.3 more midfielders in my team than strikers, so you would expect, on average, the 'outscoring midfielder' figure to be inflated by about 1.3. But for my team, it's a factor of nearly 3. Based on this, my midfielders had a significantly higher points potential than my strikers and this has been reflected in my average points-per-game for my captaincy picks.

    Total FWD Captains: 19
    Returned/Blanked: 12/7 (63% hit rate)
    Outscored by a midfielder: 8/5

    Total MID Captains: 17
    Returned/Blanked: 11/6 (64.7% hit rate)
    Outscored by a forward: 2/5

My midfielder captain picks blanked marginally less often, and were outscored much less often (again, even when adjusting by 1.3 because of the extra midfielder). Based on the above figures - focussing on midfielders would have resulted in missed points less-often.

    COMPARING BLANK WEEKS
(again, figures are PRE-DOUBLING, they are the actual points the players scored).
    Average: 1.8 points per game.

    MID blanks (6): 14 points
    Average: 2.3 points per game

Based on the above - focussing on midfielders would offer on average 0.5 more points in a blank week. Or in other words, that 1 point clean sheet for a midfielder would have made a difference about half the time.

    COMPARING GOOD WEEKS
    FWD Returns (12): 106 points
    Average: 8.8 points per game

    MID Returns (11): 119 points
    Average: 10.8 points per game

Based on the above - focussing on midfielders would offer on average 2 more points in a scoring week.

    CONCLUSIONS

    1. Even adjusting by 1.3, my Midfielders outscored Forwards at least twice as often as Forwards outscored mids
    2. A midfield captaincy-choice missed fewer points, on average, than a forward captaincy pick.
    2. On average, a midfield captain was worth 1-point-per-game more than a Forward captain (0.5 in a blank week, 2 in a scoring week).

I'm therefore contemplating a general rule of only ever choosing midfielders as captains next season. If I had followed this rule this season, I would have been about 40 points better off this season - enough to give me an OR 33! Certainly I will still take into account form and fixtures in general, but I'm impressed with how reliable my midfield captain points were this season - they outperform my striker points-per-game even though Kane, Vardy, Ighalo, Deeney and Aguero all had some good stints of form that made them seem 'must haves' at the time. What this would mean in practice is this: in weeks where it's a toss-up between Aguero, Kane, Sanchez or Payet, I will go for a midfield pick, knowing that statistically (based on this season) it was worth a point more.

    Let me know your thoughts.

I think it relies heavily on the bonus rules - this year forwards who score appeared to get bonus more often than midfielders who score - so it would be interesting to see if that would completely wipe out the extra point for each midfielders goals, on average.

        • 10 Years

Well I was only taking into account total points here. So, for my midfield picks with their bonus rules outperformed strikers with theirs.

I was thinking more in general - do midfielders get more points than strikers? For your team this year that seems to be true based on your own analysis, but that doesn't necessarily mean it will be the same for everyone's team, or your team next year. It's a great point though, that should be explored (by someone cleverer than me - where's Balders when you need him?)

Heh, I was organising these thoughts mostly for myself since I've had this niggly feeling all season that striker captaincy picks didn't feel quite right - my midfield captaincy wins always felt more satisfying. I wanted to put some stats to that anyway, and figured I might swell put that work on here anyway incase anyone... cared!

but this generally does hold true, specially helpful for me as if i'd got my C & TC perfect, i'd be comfortably around 30-40 points ahead of my current score, but now i'm scratching 9 points off 10k

I'm chasing 30 points in ML....

        His front 7 are Alexis,Payet, Mahrez,Lanzini,Kun,Ratchford,Sturridge

        Mine are Hazard,Alexis,Payet,Lanzini,Kun,Rashford,Carroll.

I feel Giroud (C) could be a good differential..

But I would need to take a hit, too many Arsenal players..(Gabriel,Bellerin ,Alexis)

IF I did Giroud to Rashford, - this would leave 4.4 for a DEF

        Which 4.4 defender,? (have Simpson,Bellerin,Smalling PVA,Gabriel)

that's different from your first post. more info. you're in a tough spot.

with Giroud in, Gabriel must go. i agree you need to (c) Giroud, and also hope Carroll and Hazard bag some goals

what 4.4 defender is liable to get you the most points? tough one. 4.4 defenders are usually not point generators.

i'm not sure the Sunderland defenders will play, but you could try Kone. or Steve Cook.

Leaning towards taken a 4 point hit. Sanchez and Martial in for Coutinho and Sturridge. My rival has Martial. He will prob get in Giroud or Kane for Sturridge, I think. My third Striker is Defoe as is his.

        Guessing here obviously.
My front 3: Martial Lukaku Defoe
        His: Martial Giroud/Kane Defoe.

I have Hazard and Sanchez though, he has neither.
He has Bellerin and Alderweireld, I have neither or cover.
