We head into Gameweek 38 with many mini-leagues still on the line, as Fantasy managers seek some last-minute inspiration. This time around, Liverpool’s midweek goal hero is joined by City’s up-and-coming young striker and Southampton’s Senegal marksman in our quest for differential success.

Christian Benteke

Understandably, Jurgen Klopp is primed to name a second-string side for Liverpool’s trip to West Bromwich Albion, given that Liverpool are schedule to clash with Sevilla in the Europa League final on Wednesday. Daniel Sturridge appears unlikely to play any part at The Hawthorns, which paves the way for Christian Benteke (8.0) to spearhead the Reds’ attack. Despite notching just 180 minutes across his previous five appearances, the Belgian frontman mustered three goals and one assist, with a last-gasp midweek leveler at home to Chelsea sure to boost his confidence.

Although Benteke was only granted a 16-minute cameo against the Blues, he charts joint-third for attempts (nine) and joint-second for shots inside the box (seven) among forwards in his last two outings. Taking the season in its entirety, Benteke’s goal frequency (one every 173 minutes) is only bettered by five counterparts who’ve amassed at least 1000 minutes of pitch time. The same can be said of his shot frequency (26.4), which places sixth under the same parameters.

Liverpool’s concluding match-up pits them against a Baggies outfit that’s recorded just five clean sheets at home all term. In addition, only six teams have conceded more big chances on their own turf (30). Liverpool’s attack on the road also measures up favourably – Tottenham Hotspur are the only team that’s chalked up more attempts (272 vs 252) than Liverpool, underlining their swashbuckling style away from home under Klopp.

Kelechi Iheanacho

In the wake of back-to-back braces against Stoke City and Southampton – which boosted his tally to seven goals (695 minutes) for the season – Kelechi Iheanacho (4.8) shot onto our radar as a tantalising budget forward. Having started each of the last three, the Nigerian marksman will be savouring the prospect of taking on a Swansea outfit that’s missing key first-team regulars such as Ashley Williams, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Lukasz Fabianski.

Razor-sharp finishing has been Iheanacho’s most striking attribute, illustrated by the fact that he ranks top among all forwards for shot-conversion rate (31.3%). Moreover, only Sergio Aguero (98 minutes) lays claim to a superior goal frequency (110.7). Illustrating how central he’s become to the Sky Blues’ attack in recent fixtures, Iheanacho ranks joint-second for touches (181) and second for touches in the final third (95) among forwards since Gameweek 35.

Swansea managed convincing victories over Liverpool and West Ham United in their last pair of outings, yet Man City will be heartened that only three teams shipped more goals (nine) in their previous quartet of league ties. The Swans also surrendered the joint-fourth-most shots inside the box (38) and the second-most big chances (13), obliging defensive form that could play into the hands of the league’s top-scoring attack.

Sadio Mane

Given that Sadio Mane (7.4) has recovered from the virus that forced him off early against Spurs, it would be remiss for us not to shine a spotlight on the 5%-owned winger.

Mane – who netted a three-minute hat-trick in the final home clash of last season – boasts five goals in four starts and next faces a Crystal Palace team that will surely be shuffled ahead of their FA Cup final date with Manchester United next weekend.

Scrutinising the underlying stats, Mane ranked joint-top among midfielders for shots on target (seven) across his previous four appearances. It’s also worth noting that, despite registering just 281 minutes, he accrued three more penalty-box touches (31) than any of his midfield rivals. In home matches, the Senegalese wide man ranks second among midfielders for shots inside the box (35) and joint-second for shots on target (18).

Mane has five double-figure hauls to his name this term, which highlights his potential for explosive returns against an Eagles rearguard that places joint-bottom for shut-outs (two) and fourth for goals conceded (31) since Gameweek 20. Alan Pardew’s men will certainly be tested by a Saints attack that bagged 10 goals in their previous trio of home encounters and placed top for goals (11) across their last four outings.

That brings back memories. Not of FFS or even FPL - I didn't get into them until 2 seasons later. But I was watching Premier League football on America's Fox Soccer Channel when Ashley Cole was still playing for Arsenal, and I even remember the tapping-up scandal in 2005. Gunners or Blues, he was almost always in in my starting 11 until 2013, and he paid his way.

In my first season in FPL, I ended with 2,085 points, which was good enough to finish 3,535th in the table. Amazing. It's a very different game now, with many more players and a much higher level of scoring. In 2013/14 I got my second highest score ever, 2,223, yet finished below 230,000. But it doesn't matter, I'm not in it to win it, just for fun and to give more point to the weekend's football.

Need some opinions on this weird situation please

    A) Carroll to Vardy

    B) Carroll and Iwobi to Giroud and Drinkwater, which would mean I'd play Defoe and bench Drinkwater (Defoe being benched in A)

HOWEVER, I'm 90% sure my rival has brought in and will captain Giroud. AND I think he will play Defoe.

I'm trying to defend a 32 point lead, A obviously makes more sense but do I go with B just to block him?

    Fantasy Football Epitaph

Warning – this post is too long and contains self-indulgent information that is likely to bore. Best to skip to the next post.

So that’s it – I’m saying farewell to FPL at the end of the season. Not because I’m throwing my toys out of the pram, because the chips screwed up my season, or because I want to be ‘convinced’ to stay. I’ll explain, but first, a bit of background on my FPL ‘career’.

My intro to fantasy football is via an auction league – I started playing in one over 10 years ago. They are great fun, and the auction itself is a fantastic night – I’d highly recommend them. Then I joined a new employer 7 years ago and was persuaded to take part in the online work mini league – which initially used the Metro league before the organizer switched to using FPL 4 seasons ago.

My historical OR ranks are variable. A couple of top 10k finishes, and currently challenging for my first top 1k finish (currently 1 point outside it). It also looks like I’ll finish as no. 1 in Zambia this season after finishing 2nd last season. I’ve won my (now previous) employer’s work league every season other than my first. However, the biggest achievement is captaining Team Zambia to victory in the inaugural FIFFSA world cup this season in a team event organized by some of the members on the FFS site.

So why quit – time pressures, a competitive nature, and a curiosity about how other people live without FPL. I’ve got 4 kids that are 4 and under. The latest addition being 3 month old twins. I now work for a non-profit in Zambia, that is time intensive, and in Zambia, everything, whether work or personal, takes six or seven times as long as it would in the UK – if you think I’m exaggerating, I’ve got plenty of stories to back this up!!

But why not continue to play as a ‘casual’. That’s where the competitiveness comes in. If I take part in something, I want to feel I’ve done my best. For FPL that means that you have to be engaged every week for 9 months of the year (10 mths if you include a month’s planning before the start of the season) – you can’t even take 1 week off.

I normally spend about an hour each week on Friday / Saturday figuring out what I’m doing that week. I also read two or three FFS articles during the week. Home and work pressures make finding this kind of time difficult. And the thought of finishing with an OR in the millions, and not being competitive in my former work mini league are not palatable. In all likelihood, my team would turn into a ghost ship several weeks into the season, so better not to even start.

How am I feeling about the whole thing? Bizarrely, I’m sort of looking forward to it. If feels a little like being released. I’m sure there will be days when I catch a glimpse of a game like Swansea vs Everton and have fond memories of Michu, and not so fond memories of another wasted Lukaku captaincy. I also no longer have to feel guilty for having mixed feelings about one of my players scoring against the team I support. And rather than having to be glued to what is happening in all 10 games each weekend, I can keep an eye on my team’s game and ignore the rest.

So, come August and the impending new season, will I backtrack and start playing again? I don’t think so. But it’s another reason for posting this – in a way, it’s a bit of closure and accountability for me. If you see me on the site next season, feel free to call me a hypocrite and send some abuse my way. As for the season after next? Who knows, but the home / life pressures are unlikely to have changed much. Maybe I’ll come back to the site in a year’s time and report back on the sabbatical.

I also need to confess that I’m not a regular poster, but I love the site. The articles are helpful, and some of the tools are great. I often read the comments, and use them to reach decisions about my own team. My own lack of posting is more to do with feeling that my advice is not going to be at the same level as some of the other posters on here. With hindsight, I’d say that my one regret is not contributing more. My advice may not have been at the level of some others, but sometimes sharing your own perspective can help others to clarify their thinking, and reach their own decision.

So why post a farewell if I’m not a regular? To say thanks to a few people. Firstly, my fellow team mates from the FIFFSA world cup (Oscar, aka Statistics fc; John, aka Jonnyleeds; Anurag, aka AK; Shyam, aka 42towels; and Ben, aka thebodgehodge) – it was a pleasure to be your team mate – all the best in retaining the competition next season – and to be honest, taking part with all of you to defend the title next season is the one thing that nearly made me reconsider this decision! I also have to say thanks to the organizers of the FIFFSA event – it was a fantastic competition – thanks Balders, BabyB, Jaffalicious, Diva, Blue Lion and Cheeseoid (Balders – we did miss our victory write up, but your article on the double DGW planning with chips made up for it). I’d also like to thank Mark and the FFS team for such a great site. It must be challenging to keep so many diverse people engaged and ‘happy’ – when even a new website design causes so much consternation. 

There are a few things that I’ll miss from the site – I listen to the scoutcast when I can find the time. I’d offer to make a guest appearance, but one deadly dullard is enough…… I also enjoy Mark’s pre match preamble article as he often articulates how I’m feeling about FPL, or summarizes my view on a particular subject much more succinctly than I’m able to.

Finally (at last), If I was making any recommendations to others on the site, it would be to get a membership (full season ticker, membership articles like the big numbers), take part in at least one team event organized on the site (keep an eye on the community page for details), and post more regularly to help others on the site.

    Farewell.

Bringing up young children requires 24/7 dedication and free time is at a premium with all the activities they get involved involved in as they grow up and progress through the education system. I have 2 children and is time consuming enough although now one is 20 , left home and at uni. The other is 17 , first year sixth form and very likely to leave for uni in 18 months. My kids are my pride and joy and take first priority in every instance but now I have more time for things like this.
All the best to you anyway.

It will be sad to see Tiki leave, his consistency is as annoying as it is impressive but it means i have a fighting chance to finish one position higher next season! You'd expect them to keep a clean sheet against Villa but then who knows.

Is Van Aanholt definitely not starting tomorrow?

Or are we just guessing based on Fat Sam saying something?

Have Martial, other option is bench Carrol and swap Lanzini to at 6.1 mid ?

Wanted Tadic but don't fancy for a hit, would be PVA out if he is not playing ? for a 4.1 defender.

Big week, mini league leader was 150 clear at christmas, He was in the top 100 and top all season until last week.

Who instead Firmino...??? I have 9.3 for that player... other MID players are Eriksen, Payet, Lingard and Townsend...

    A: Ozil
    B: Walcott (my favourite)
    C: Barkley
    D: Mirallas
    E: Mane
F: Tadic (my homeboy, from my town in Serbia)

I would like to get Tadic in somehow but my only options without taking a -4 hit would be to lose one of Payet / Mahrez. Is that worth it?

    Hey guys need help.
    A) forster and martial in -4
    B) forster giroud and tadic -8
What do you think is best?

I have feeling if I don't get Giroud for -4 will cost me cash league. 15pts behind if take hit. No hit means playing Townsend and Carroll probably

Is your rival getting him in or is this for differential? Would be tempted if it's the latter.

Anyone else considering forfieting their all out attack chip? For me it comes down to PVA/smalling vs fabregas (only reason I'm considering PVA over smalling is that I have De Gea in goal).

    1. @FPLMason

It comes down to Mahrez vs PvA in my case.

Mahrez would start if I had him. Will probably go with fab with smalling but he's been a massive disappointment over the double.

I'd play fab, but not a big deal if you don't use the chip

Anyone else have an issue with Aguero being voted above Ighalo for strikers of the season. Aguero has scored 6 points more yet cost considerably more than double?!???

Anyone knows what's 5k in terms of OR points? I'm ranked 5785 with 2235pts. Hoping to break in the top 5K with:

    Mignolet
    Bellerin Gabriel PVA
    Sanchez(c) Hazard Tadic KDB Payet
    Carroll Aguero
    Subs: Darlow, Coleman, Simpson, Defoe

Your team looks solid IMO.would be surprised if you didn't make top 5k with that. Not worth any hits. Daughter has TC chip on Sanchez and hopes to be inside top 3k come the end.
          Best of luck to you.
