The domestic season may not quite be over but we’re already focussing our thoughts on the upcoming Euro 2016 tournament. The month-long competition, which comprises of 24 teams, kicks off on June 10 in France and we’ve already set up a Fantasy Football Scout league in the official UEFA game for those Fantasy managers looking to while away the summer months until the Premier League action gets back underway on Saturday, August 13.

Over the next few weeks we plan to roll out articles on all 24 of the participants, assessing the regular starters and key targets to pinpoint for our squads. To kick off our series of summer articles on Euro 2016, we cast an eye over the ruleset involved.

Most readers will be familiar with the machinations of the UEFA game. It’s basically the same format as their official Champions League game and involves many of the rules that are typically associated with the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game.

Squad Selection

To get your squad up and running, you must select a squad of 15 players; similar to FPL this comprises two goalkeepers, five defenders, five midfielders and three forwards. In the group stages, only three players from any given team are allowed but, as the tournament unfolds, this increases to four players per team for the round of 16, five for the Quarter Finals, six in the Semis and eight in the Final.

In terms of formations, it’s similar to Fantasy Premier League – aside from picking a keeper, you need to have at least three defenders, two midfielders and one forward for your starting XI. Essentially, then, you can pick from 3-4-3, 3-5-2, 4-3-3, 4-4-2, 4-5-1, 5-2-3, 5-3-2 and 5-4-1 set-ups.

Fantasy managers are handed 100m Euros to construct their initial squads, with another five million Euros added to our budgets once the group stages have passed.

Meanwhile, player prices will only change once the group stages have passed. We contacted those running the game earlier today, who explained that on-pitch displays, and not market forces, will affect those fluctuations in cost:

“The player price change is dependent only on their performances during the tournament and not on ownership levels. The new prices will be set through an automated process”.

It’s also worth noting that you will get the full profit from a transfer – if you buy someone for 5.0 and sell him when he reaches 5.2, you would gain the full 0.2, rather than the familiar 0.1 in FPL.

Substitutions

Although we can construct our benches to utilise the autosubs option, the official UEFA offering favours a hands-on approach and allows Fantasy managers to make changes to our line-ups between Gamedays in any given Matchday.

If one of your starters doesn’t perform or isn’t selected, then, you can swap them out and bring in a replacement off the bench later in the Matchday. It’s also worth bearing in mind that we’re likely to get an idea on the lineups from the early kick-offs each day, affording Fantasy managers the chance to hold fire until the teams are announced before subbing out any under-achievers.

Similarly, when it comes to selecting captains, you have the option to “stick or twist” on each Gameday – by removing the armband from any player, though, you will lose their double points. The above scenarios only apply if the player in question is not sent off, however; any player who receives a red card cannot be subbed out of your starting XI – the situation can be all the more frustrating if your captain happens to be the man dismissed.

The ability to switch armbands from one day to the next not only makes the matches more entertaining to follow, it also underlines the fact that a balance is required by Fantasy managers in order to take advantage of the rule. A strong captain choice from Groups A through to F is an essential part of the planning, then.

A quick glance at the scheduling shows that Matchday 1 is played over five Gamedays, whilst Matchdays 2 and 3 are both comprised of four Gamedays.

The number of fixtures per Gameday also varies. Matchday 1 is broken down by one, three, three, three and two respectively, whereas the final two Gamedays in Matchday 3 hand us four fixtures on each occasion, for example. Again, that’s another factor worth considering when structuring our squads.

Scoring Points

You can find a full list of the rules here, though as mentioned, most are very similar to FPL. Keepers and defenders who play at least 60 minutes and earn a clean sheet are awarded six points, whilst keepers earn one extra point for every three saves. It’s three points for an assist regardless of position, whilst midfielders receive five points for scoring a goal and forwards pick up just four – you get the idea.

There are, however, a handful of rules unfamiliar to FPL managers.

A player will earn two extra points if he is brought down for a penalty, regardless of whether the spot-kick is converted. Conversely, any player who brings down an opponent and causes a penalty is a point worse off for doing so.

No assist is given if a player is deemed to have created his own scoring opportunity via a solo run or dribble prior to finding the net.

Transfers

Fantasy managers are afforded one transfer at the end of each Matchday to freshen up their squads – make any more changes and it’ll cost you four points per alteration.

After the deadline for Round 3 passes, Fantasy managers can then make an unlimited number of changes prior to the Round of 16 kicking off. A further four are afforded for the Quarter Finals, followed by four for the Semi Finals and four more for the Final.

We’re also handed an extra Wildcard, which can be played any time during the tournament. Essentially, though, this is best wielded during the Group stages, as we can start our squads from scratch after that point anyway.

In previous iterations, some Fantasy managers used it just after Round 1, focusing their initial squad selection on the first batch of fixtures before selecting a more rounded set of players thereafter.

Others opted to press the button prior to Round 3 as, by then, some teams had already qualified. Many of the nations that have already made it through may well be more susceptible to rotation than others – Fantasy managers could transfer out players from those teams and ship in assets from sides who have to go all-out for wins in order to progress, safe in the knowledge they can draft their favourites back in prior to the knock-out stages.

Scout League

Finally, a reminder that our coverage for the tournament will also feature updates of the official Scout League, as we keep you abreast of the runners and riders as action unfolds. If you haven’t joined already, the code is 01011DGH.

This is likely Wengers last year and to attract a top replacement they will need to offer a huge transfer chest, so I cant see them spending a lot now, only to do it all again when the new manager comes in

The three to miss out will be from Rashford, Delph, Drinkwater and Townsend

        1. Ian Davis
          • 15 Years
          9 years, 6 months ago

Yeah, definitely true. Townsend is 4/6 to go, so bookies are expecting the other 3 to miss out. Rashford is the most likely to make an impression in the friendlies if given a chance, although Delph could easily fill in for an injured Wilshere/Henderson. It's probably not worth it, but could work out.

A sacrifice to be made to balance my team. Having him will constraint my team and not allow me to get good players as replacements should they perform well. Here I can easily dispose the likes of Milik or KDB if reqd. Griezmann & Muller more essential for my team to lose.

Not sure how many points Pogba will get from a fantasy perspective imo. Guys like Alaba & Siggurdson are on all important set pieces, so might yield more points if the team does score a goal. Think the rule states players can be subbed between game days if one of your player does not perform well, so can get players on the bench who are nailed on to play. Team looks good otherwise.

Your list is pretty good. I have not been that impressed by Müller this recently however, and would put the Real madrid duo Ronaldo-Benzema first. Honestly surprised nobody names Benzema, his NPGA90 stats are incredible and his playing is absolute joy to watch.

      Ronaldo
      Griezmann
      Lewandowski

Fit enough to play 90 minutes in last match and expected to start CL final, and what does that have to do with rating his game this year anyway? Ronaldo actually is injured, and yet everybody put him in their lists.

Agree, he's been very good and subject to too much criticism seen his finishing. I'm just not as impressed of his all round involvement as I am of Benzema's, and then Ronaldo's goal threat is just incredible.

Hmm... and here's me hoping we sell Benzema....

He's a fantastic finisher, he links the play well between Ronaldo+Bale, but I don't think he has the flair / creativity / "wow" factor that other strikers around have, he's more of a poacher that drops deep to act as a backboard that Ronaldo+Bale can bounce the ball off.. Whenever Ronaldo / Bale are absent, Benzema disappears.

Would much rather Griezmann / Lewan / Muller leading the line personally but that's a bit of an unpopular opinion.

Seriously? Who'se the more creative CF that you find on planet? None of the three you mentioned is. And as for the "wow" factor, only Lewa competes. I understand if you can add Messi to the team, but other than that...

All in all, I think your analysis of Benzema is horribly wrong.

That's fair enough, I must be missing something alright as he's massively rated.. I think he'd struggle without the other stars surrounding him though.

Great finisher, but I see him as more of a poacher than most people, I rarely see him create anything in the vein of Bale / Ronaldo / Modric / James / Isco... He takes part in the build up alright and gets his fair few assists as well as goals, but still, think it's a result of good players around him.

I find it hard to believe you see Bale and Ronaldo as creative players but not Benzema. He's the one who creates the attacks, while Ronaldo is the poacher, developed into a sort super-Inzaghi in these recent years.

Benzema works far harder than Ronaldo, who does play off the last man a lot these days and waits for the ball to break at the far post for a tap in.

I still rate Ronaldo above Benzema in every aspect of his game except for potentially his attitude, but yes, you're right in that Benzema creates more than Ronaldo, I should have left Ronaldo out of that list, he only creates for himself (if even).

Still wouldn't be too upset to see the back of either of them tbh. Can't build a team around a 31 year old selfish Ronaldo, and no matter what you say, you won't convince me that Benzema is good enough. I think he'd fit in excellently at Arsenal, but doubt that would ever happen.

I'd personally absolutely love Griezmann or Lewandowski. I'd rate Kun higher than Benzema too but he's just too injury prone..

Kun definitely is not more of a creator. He's the poacher of all poachers, albeit a one who can consistently score at high rate from distance.

According to the article we can make substitutions during a Matchday manually, like in previous UEFA fantasy games. But in the McD game's rules there is no mention of this. They just mention the automatic substitutions: "if one or more doesn't play then they may be automatically substituted with the players on the bench." and "Your substitutes provide cover for unforeseen events like injuries and postponements by automatically replacing starting players who don't play in a Matchday." There's also no mention of it being possible to change your captain within the matchday. So where does the information in the article come from?

You are right. It was used in 2012 but nothing on the rules state this regarding in-match subs or captain switches.

On the website the information does not match up on the 'how to play' and 'rules' sections.

It completely defines how we set up our teams so I'm really hoping for some definite confirmation on this prior to the tournament.

Do you really tink Dier is going to play? If so, he's coming in my team too!

Denayer is not nailed on I assume, maybe best to wait until the friendlies to be sure.

12M spent on German defence is a but much for my taste

As for Griezmann, he's probably not going to play as a striker, Giroud is, so I'm starting to think that the big man might be a better option (I'm french btw)

I've currently got 6 the same. I doubt Denayer will play as they also have Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Vermaelen and Lombaerts that can play at centre back, although it's likely it least one of those will play at full back.

If I were you, I'd maybe consider swapping Lewandowski for someone less expensive and strengthen midfield.

Thoughts on my first draft team? This is likely to change by the time the Euros start. I've started by looking at players who I think will be guaranteed to play (my only doubt is Zielinski) and throwing in a few gambles there too such as Janko and Dzsudzsak who are lower in price but important for their countries. The article states we can make subs between games (although not in rules) so it's important to try and get a balanced squad. I've also avoided group E which I reckon is the only one which has two teams capable of making the semi's. As always, I've tried to pick set piece takers such as Ozil, Alaba and Dzsudzsak.

    Rui Patricio, Sommer
    Boateng, Koscielny, Evra, Juanfran, Dier
    Ozil, Alaba, Alli, Dzsudzsak, Zielinski
    Muller, Griezmann, Janko

I agree about the squad but I think the subs between games actually means between the match days they have in the upcoming matches, so 1 game per team for matchday rather than sub players every day to catch more performances for your squad - could be wrong though

Yeah, I read it like that also but the article above has me doubting my understanding! I used the McDonald's game for the World Cup and you could change players in the middle of a gameweek, however, the rules this time suggest subs are the he same as the FPL. Hopefully this will be clarified before. Either way, I'm hoping to have at least 14 players I'd happily have in my starting 11.

Is it just me or after having read the rules (http://eurofantasy.uefa.com/en/fantasy16/rules) can we NOT sub-out under-performing players for benched players yet to play / swap the armband if our captain has a poor game this year? The article above claims that we can still do this as per previous tournaments, but I can't see this stated anywhere in the rules - anyone?
