After arriving at West Ham in a deal worth £10.7 million from Marseille, Dimitri Payet went on to enjoy a fantastic debut season in the Premier League, scoring nine goals and registering 13 assists to help the Hammers claim an impressive seventh place finish. That form helped the midfielder gain a place in the PFA Team of the Year, while he picked up 18% of our midfielders vote to claim a spot in our Team of the Season.

THE STATISTICS

Payet made his way to Upton Park on the back of seven goals and a league-high 17 assists during his final season at Marseille. Priced at a reasonable 7.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), the Frenchman was the subject of much interest during pre-season and immediately justified the hype, bagging a goal and an assist in his first two matches, while a 16-point haul against Newcastle in Gameweek 5 cemented his position as one of the most sought-after midfielders in the game.

Payet then backed that up with two goals and three assists in his next five appearances, seeing his price rise to 8.3 in FPL by the time West Ham took on Everton in Gameweek 12. That afternoon saw Payet pick up an ankle injury, which left the midfielder on the sidelines until Gameweek 20.

He immediately returned to form in the Hammers 3-1 win at Bournemouth in Gameweek 21, registering a goal and an assist in an 11-point haul, while although he blanked in his next four matches, the playmaker ended the campaign in fine form, serving up three goals and eight assists in his final 12 outings.

Payet finished the season with 171 points in FPL, joint-fourth in midfield along with Swansea’s Andre Ayew, his former team-mate at Marseille. In terms of points per game, though, his average of 5.7 was bettered only by Riyad Mahrez (6.5) in the centre of the park and level with Mesut Ozil.

The Frenchman also served up six double-figure hauls over the course of the campaign and picked up points in 17 of 30 league appearances.

THE PROSPECTS

Having made such a strong impression during his first season in English football, expectations will certainly be high for Payet as West Ham move from Upton Park to the Olympic Stadium ahead of 2016/17. West Ham boss Slaven Bilic is expected to further increase the quality of the Hammers squad in the summer, with co-owner David Sullivan revealing last week the club had lodged a £24 million bid for a striker in France, while only on Tuesday, Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe also confirmed the Hammers had bid for Callum Wilson, in addition to Matt Ritchie.

Considering that Payet delivered fantastic numbers when the Hammers had either Diafra Sakho, Andy Carroll or occasionally Emmanuel Emenike as their central striker, the ceiling could potentially be even higher should West Ham land one of their big transfer targets. A price hike into the region of around 9.5 is certainly inevitable for the France international, though as the stats show, he could still prove irresistible at a higher valuation.

Indeed, Payet’s 13 assists were bettered only by Ozil (19) and Tottenham’s Christian Eriksen (16), while his average of 23.2 minutes per chance created was second only to Ozil (21.9) among midfielders. The former Marseille man was also a strong beneficiary from the new Bonus Point System (BPS), racking up 25 extra points, joint-fifth among all players in FPL despite those missed matches.

West Ham ended the season as the joint-fourth highest scoring side in the top flight with 65 goals, indicating we shouldn’t overlook their main attacking assets as we head into next season. Regardless of whether Bilic rolls out a 4-3-3, 4-2-3-1 or 3-5-2, Payet looks immune to any potential rotation and is likely to remain the jewel in the Hammers’ crown for the campaign ahead. A dead-ball ability to score from distance or create for his team-mates will ensure he is earmarked as a must-have by many Fantasy managers.

Bilic’s use of Michail Antonio will play a part in our thinking, though. Utilised mainly as a right-back or right wing-back in the final few months of the season, the former Forest man returned to his attacking midfield role on the final match of the campaign and duly obliged by netting the Hammers’ only goal in a 2-1 loss at Stoke. Antonio looks likely to come in around 7.0 or 7.5 and, having scored only one less goal that Payet in over 500 minutes’ less pitch time, could emerge ahead of the likes of Manuel Lanzini and Mark Noble as the Frenchman’s main rival for our attentions.

SCOUT PICKS CHALLENGE - SEASON RESULTS

Apologies for the delay, but finally I've had time to compile the final results of this year's Scout Picks Challenge!

Thank you to everyone who participated, and the mini-game shall be back next year.

***** SCORES ON THE BOARD *****

    1st - FantasyFootballFrog (64pts)
Top 4% - We Go For it (63pts), Suarezista (57pts)
Top 10% - Konig Luther, FFS Scout (52pts), Jay (51pts), SPFC (50pts), Dusan Citizen (49pts)

with special mention to TambourineMan on a close 47 points.

The FFS Scout Picks + Differentials scored a high 74 points, so no bonus points for GW38.

    ***** FINAL RANKINGS *****

In what has been a lot of ups and downs, I can confirm that the winner of this year's Scout Picks Challenge is...

............. Barry Woj AND Dusan Citizen .............

Dusan led for the majority of the season, with Barry Woj providing a late outburst to throw himself in there. Well done to you both for spoiling the shares, something I didn't anticipate at all this year!

Both of them are also the only ones who managed to beat the FFS Scout, which is a very credible feat to pull off. I know I'll be taking hints from both of those two in the new season for differential players.

    The final top 5 rankings are;

    1st - Dusan Citizen, Barry Woj (23pts)
    3rd - FFS Scout (21pts)
    4th - FantasyFootballFrog (20pts)
    5th - IanP1970, Balders (18pts)

Thank you once again to everyone, and hopefully this picks up again next season!

Am i right in thinking that the Euro format is pretty much the same as our beloved FPL now. Before I recall subbing players out after games at the risk of the players playing on different games getting more or less points?

Seems the new (i havent played for years) format is pick XI and thats it for the game week.

    Clarity would be great?

yeah. Read it prior to post. Total change then. Makes it trickier eh? A lot of games offer a straight XI favourite team, think the XI players is therefore overkill. Unlike a long premier league competition where it matters, three games to smash points before you can overhaul for free means the extra 4 players are hardly worth it.

Seems they didn't write the rules properly. You can sub in players manually, as well as cap change. Works on a daily basis, not a game basis. So plan ahead and you'll be fine, get XV starters.

Oh shet. well thats exactly what i was saying?!

So like the old format you can change the players each day!? and finish with XI players at the end of the so called game week.

      • 10 Years
      9 years, 7 months ago

Mangala won't start, Carvajal isn't nailed at all, Denayer is a great buy. Have a look at Hector, seems like he has the LB spot and has some nice returns for 5.5, undervalued. Dier is 5 and OOP so there has to be value there, if you think Smalling can tighten things up significantly. Premium buy is Jordi Alba at 7, treat him like a quality lower-priced midfielder and it won't feel so bad.

Very hard to predict, but something like: DDG, Juanfran, Pique, Ramos, Alba, Busquets, Iniesta, Fabregas, Silva, Pedro, Morata. Then throw in Carvajal, Thiago, Isco, Koke, Aduriz etc.

      1. Carvajal isn't nailed.
      2. Siggy may be slightly overpriced, but you could argue he is central to what Iceland do.
      3. Don't fancy Hazard (tough group) or Modric.
      4. Stones won't play
      5. For me, Ronaldo isn;t worth the money, it would be great if you downgraded him for cash elsewhere. It looks like you will have to make that sacrifice.
      Try sort out all these.

Pretty similar to most of the drafts on this website. Personally I prefer Calanoglu to Grosicki(I've had him in basically all my drafts) he is 7.5 tho I'd say downgrade JM to a 4.5 change Grosicki to Calanoglu and use the extra million as u please. Personally I would spend it on your forward line but many people seem stuck on greizman

Ozil is a massive luxury, that extra wedge can make so much difference to the whole squad. I'd think about dropping him.
Then you can bump Mario up to Perisic or Mertens and get Sommer back in, 7 bites at the c/s's are going to be crucial. Might also be worth thinking about mispriced Denayer? Maybe in for Sapunaru?

I reckon Barkley would be Henderson and Barks will be used from the bench

Can't see Alli & Bark together, one or the other I'm afraid.

So Jamie Vardy then. He just keeps scoring doesn't he? I think I may just take a punt on the fella for a cheeky 7 million

Okay, here is my first go for the Euro game -

    Sommer
    Koscienly Gunter Hector Alba
    Memusha Perisic Alaba
    Shaqiri Lewa Muller

Bench - Almer, Dragovic, Siggy, Rafa Silva

Thoughts?? I know the midfield is weak but I see no value in getting expensive mids. One option is to downgrade Siggy to Grosicki and get in Giroud for Shaqiri.

I have to say choosing the eurp fantasy football side makes me realise ho little I know outside of the English based players. It is so easy to see value in players like Dier and Alli but there is bound to be players in similar positions abroad i have no idea about.

It's mind bending mate, there'll be shedloads of good returns in this group stage from players never mentioned lol

Is that the Albanian Meushaj? He's fine as a cheap 5th but you have Rafa too so you really must get a Mak, Weiss or Alli, or a 7 in instead. Siggy looks overvalued a tad and Gunter can be "downgraded" to Denayer. Yep, you can do it I think.

      Thanks,

Gunter -> Denayer gets me 0.5
SIggy -> Grosicki gets me 1.0
Still short of 0.5 to get in Weiss for Memushaj. Do you know of a 4.0/4.5 goalie that is guaranteed to start?

        Dragovic -> Vrsaljko (Cro) + 0.5

Yes, Darren Rudolph will start for the Republic of Ireland for 4.5m. Seen many Mucha's @4 but he won't start.

14 yellows and a straight red in the Cope Del Rey

Must have been a pretty nasty affair, did anyone watch?

Anyone considering Hamsik in their squads?

Went for Perisic over Hamsik. But both equally good.

Yeah have had Perisic all along, but now just got Hamsik as well. Just trying to figure out how to distribute the funds. I had Alli/Haz but England didn't look great so I shipped out for 2 mid price ones

It came down to Turkey's defence (Perisic) vs Wales' defence (Hamsik). The latter is way better. However, Hamsik is on pens for Slovakia.

    Sommer, 4.0
    Koscielny, Fuchs, Alba, Hector, Vrsaljko
    Peresic, KDB, Payet, Kroos, Alaba
    Kane, Shaqiri, Vydra

I'm 0.5 off turning Kroos into Ozil

This always happens in a first draft and then you spend two weeks tweaking everything to no avail!

Not sure about France defence value
Also think Martial and Payet will share one wide spot

Well this is where I am thinking at the moment and I think I quite like it.

    Sommer - Patricio
    Koscielny - Alba - Hector - Dier - Denayer
Ozil - Alli - Martial - Persic - Memushaj or some other 4.5
    Lewandowski - Vardy - Janko

When you look at the numbers of goals and international shots on targets Lewandowski seems like a no brainer
