What's the news on Guerreiro from Portugal? He looks like a good 4mil gamble now they are playing first and will start filling my bench for the semis/final...

    Thinking of these 4 changes:

    Hennessy to 4mil
    Dier to Guerreiro
    Ramsey to Draxler
    Perisic to Hazard

Look good in theory? I would have 1.5mil left over if you think there is a better option in defence or elsewhere

Thanks in advance for the help

Good strategy, but i think its to early.
with 4 days of games you should maximize your chances with the 15 players.

      Guerreiro should be fine.

I'm not sure I agree with Hamann about the PL.

Look at Belgium, they have impressed in the Euros. The big majority of their most impressive players - Hazard, KDB, Lukaku, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Vermaelen, Courtois - play or have played in the PL.

Look at France, also an impressive QF team. Lloris, Sagna, Koscielny, Payet, Kanté, Giroud and Evra are all PL players past or present.

Having players in the PL doesn't seem to have hurt those two teams. 😕

England were badly organised and badly coached. That's the long and the short of it really.

      exactly, no excuses

leadership comes from the top. The FA are clueless. Why did Roy keep his job after the last debacle?

the players are good enough to beat Russia, Iceland, Slovakia. No arguments.

I dont expect to win tournaments but what is the point in us even going if we dont try.

England players have to equal the effort put in by other teams first.

I had this chat earlier with my dad. Muller and Lewa well rested in the winter with Bayern and have done nothing. Spain have gone home when most of their players are Barca/Real players. Doesn't cut it for me!

Every player you have named would walk into the England team and be the best player. I think the point hes making is that the England players are ridculously overrated and significantly overpaid. An unfair expectation is layed upon them because they play in the PL

No, he said that Scudamore had "sold a Skoda as a Lamborghini" for the last 15 years and that La Liga and the Bundesliga were far better leagues.

Seeing that Kane was Spurs' star player and top PL goalscorer I can't see your point really. He gets into the France team easily. The Italy team. The Germany team. The Spain team. The Belgium team. In fact I can't think of a last-8 team apart from Poland where he wouldn't be first-choice striker. Can you?

Just with regards to those French players, the PL players are the reason they've looked shaky imo.
Payet has been a class above, but I wouldn't say any of Sagna / Evra / Koscielny / Kanté / Giroud / Lloris have had exceptionally impressive campaigns.

With Belgium, Lukaku hasn't played well yet (save for his two goals v Ireland, which isn't that impressive). KdB has been hit and miss, and they were defensively found out against the only decent opposition they've played so far in Italy. Hazard is their Payet-equivalent and is a class above.

I just don't think you can point to France / Belgium's PL players as examples for what's right about the PL, it happened at the World Cup too, the PL's best generally don't bring their league form to the international stage. Obviously there's way more to it than just the league they play in though...

        • 12 Years
        9 years, 5 months ago

Come on now IM, I know France's opponents have been relatively weak, but they have only conceded from penalties (by Evra and Pogba) in what were otherwise relatively non-dangerous situations. So I'm not sure what more you want from Lloris, Koscielny, Sagna and Kante up to now unless you're going to just disregard France's first 4 matches as too easy. Before I move on, just a specific point on Kante, he's 4th in midfielders for interceptions + tackles won despite having played 130 minutes less than many players including the 3 directly above him. So yeah Kante's still being his hella industrious self that won him all the plaudits in the Premier League.

Calling Payet and Hazard 'class aboves' is a huge cop out for the fact that the player of the tournament so far, and the individual performance of the tournament so far both fly in the face of your anti-PL argument. Then there's De Bruyne who's been the most creative player in the tournament (both by chances created and assists) but you're blase enough to call him hit and miss. If you wanted to create a top 5 players so far, I feel you get at least 3 and probably 4 PL or former PL players in that list probably with Toni Kroos as the exception.

As for the World Cup, Ozil, Schurrle, Mertesacker, Podolski, Aguero, Zabaleta, Demichelis, Mascherano, RVP, Vlaar, Kuyt, Krul, De Guzman, Luiz, Fernandinho, Paulinho, Oscar, Ramires and Willian all made the final four so I'm not sure your point there.

Does it make sense to try and bank on France progressing and keeping Rami for the SFs if you want to make an offensive sub instead of a defensive one? I have 3 players not going through: DDG, Dier, Perisic

Tempted by DDG, Dier, Perisic, Ramsey > Patricio/Fabianski, Guerreiro, KDB, Draxler

    rest of team:
    Hennessey
    Hector - Meunier - Jedrzejczyk - Rami
    Hazard - Ozil - Payet
    Muller - Bale - Milik

At your rank, it could be a blessing.

Wouldnt it be nice if the english FA did something that actually improves the likelihood of us performing in a major tournament.

I believe the answer is to "retire" all england players over the age of 24 now. Lets build a team for 4-6 years time. Its radical but it just might work.

It would never happen here but why not?

    Gotta drop Morata and Rakitic.

    Should I do:
    A) Morata/Rakitic -> Eder/Hazard
    B) Morata/Rakitic/Bale/Ramsey -> Ronaldo/Drax/Naingollan/Giroud

    I'm thinking B.
