As the Euro 2016 quarter-finals reach the halfway stage this evening, DraftKings offers us a pair of fixtures over Friday and Saturday to construct our squads around.

Wales take on Belgium in Lille at 8pm for a place in the last four against Portugal. Chris Coleman’s side may be the underdogs but, in Gareth Bale, they boast one of the tournament’s form players. Joint-top scorer over the first four rounds of fixtures, the Real Madrid attacker has registered more attempts on target than any player to date.

Belgium arrive on the back of three successive wins and turned in their most impressive display of the tournament with a 4-0 thrashing of Hungary last time out. Marc Wilmots’ side are without regular defenders Thomas Vermaelen and Jan Vertonghen through injury and suspension respectively, though, and could struggle to register a fourth straight shut-out tonight.

Germany and Italy go head-to-head in Bordeaux at 8pm tomorrow evening.

Joachim Low’s side have won three and drawn one of their four fixtures and breezed past Slovakia 3-0 in the Round of 16. Germany have impressed at both ends of the pitch – they produced both more attempts on goal and efforts inside the box than any country over the first four rounds of fixtures.

Given that they have allowed their opponents less attempts on goal than any side and have also yet to concede, the World Champions are favoured to get the best of Antonio Conte’s troops.

Nonetheless, Italy will be buoyed by their convincing 2-0 win over defending champions Spain last time out. The Azzurri have produced just 36 attempts on goal to Germany’s 83 but their resilient rearguard has conceded a single goal so far, in a 1-0 loss to Republic of Ireland when Conte made eight changes to his starting XI.

As always, DraftKings allows us to scan the teamsheets before each fixture, adjusting your line-ups in search of some last-minute bargains.

Here’s our selection of DraftKings targets to help guide your picks ahead of the upcoming contest.

Thomas Muller – Germany – $9300
Although he’s yet to find the net in Euro 2016, the Germany attacker’s all-round contribution has continued to bring in the points. Muller is joint-top for attempts on goal for Low’s side ahead of tomorrow’s encounter with Italy, whilst he has also made more successful tackles than any team-mate and supplied seven crosses thanks to his role on the right flank.

Kevin de Bruyne – Belgium – $9700
The Belgian’s creative endeavours continue to make him an ideal candidate for our eight-man DraftKings line-ups. De Bruyne has produced more crosses and key passes than any player in the tournament and is thriving in a central support role for Marc Wilmots’ side. A weakened defence means the Red Devils are likely to go on the offensive and De Bruyne looks vital to their prospects of sealing a spot in the last four.

Aaron Ramsey – Wales – $7600
The Wales midfielder was something of a disappointment in the previous round after opponents Northern Ireland sat deep and proved difficult to break down. Ramsey is up against a Belgium side that’s expected to go on the offensive this time around, thus allowing Chris Coleman’s troops the chance to break at speed on the counter. Second for successful tackles and attempts on goal for his country, Ramsey – who is Wales’ leading candidate for crosses and chances created – looks an ideal candidate for our DraftKings squads this evening.

James Chester – Wales – $3600
A rock at the heart of the Wales defence, Chester’s tally of 14 successful tackles is second only to Croatia’s Darijo Srna for the tournament and is at least double the number of any team-mate. Given that he’s also made more interceptions than any of Chris Coleman’s squad, the West Brom defender can expect to be kept busy against Belgium’s thriving attack tonight.

Jordan Lukaku – Belgium – $3800
The raiding left-back could be set for his first start of the tournament as Marc Wilmots reshuffles his defence for the clash against Wales. Lukaku bagged two assists in three friendly appearances prior to the start of Euro 2016 and produced a cross every 38.5 minutes. It’s worth keeping an eye on tonight’s teamsheets, then, with a price of $3800 looking excellent value for money if he’s handed a place in The Red Devils’ XI.

Spots in DraftKings contests for Friday and Saturday’s matches are still available, including the $3 entry “Striker” with a $5k prize pot.

DraftKings is available only to those aged 18 or over. Be sure to take note of their Terms and Conditions here and play responsibly.

I think it is great for the league if the likes of Watford can keep their best players because of the TV deal. The business models will shift to fielding and keeping the most competitive team possible in order to stay up, which is a nice push back against a big four hierarchy in which the other teams were constantly turning in their best players for cash as soon as they could profit. If they get 100M just to avoid relegation than 60M for their strikers isn't quite that tempting.

It's like a neighborhood with a bunch of house flippers in it, the property values go up but what kind of place to live is it?

The situation will remain the same for as long as BT and Sky are so desperate to buy the product. BT have somewhat enhanced the obscene sums being paid to clubs and players through their determination to take on Sky. Things can only come crashing down imo if there is a mass pull out of subscribers which is very unlikely. The implications would be huge. Club balance sheets would be decimated as the assets would be worth a fraction of their previous value and banks would pull the plug very swiftly.

I just read that Chelsea's cut of 99M for winning in 2015 will now equal the cut for finishing in 20th under the new deal.

I think there has been a net out flux of super talented players in the PL over the last 3-4 years, so if this cash can keep them or recruit, it will make for a more exciting product, TV revenues will continue to soar, etc.

Definition of a bubble, probably, but it should be an exciting and hopefully competitive next few years.

Until someone comes along with a new way to view football, it's only a matter of time before services like Netflix and other streaming sites (Amazon / Yahoo / etc) start to become more prevalent. If you could spend €150 for a year of just premiership matches instead of €50 per month for a whole Sky package, people would jump at the idea.

              • 12 Years
              9 years, 5 months ago

I don't think we'll ever get to that point for football. Premier League rights are huuge chunk of the Sky's annual expenditure. Amazon or Netflix wouldn't be able to undercut the sky sports package by that much. You can already get the SkySports package separately from SkyTV for £34 a month on a rolling contract through NowTV, if somebody was going to cut out the PL and just present it individually I don't think you'd see it dip below £25 a month.

Great points. ESPN is the monolith here in the US and has driven the rise in cable TV fees over the past decade. They are at a crossroads because of how successful the entertainment streams have been as far as people choosing exactly what they want to spend on as far as shows, but so far the companies are resistant to changing their model for sports programming since it is one of the last true live events that galvanizes viewers.

They will need to be careful not to become like newspapers, though, and consider themselves indispensable forever.

Of course Sky TV is a large part of the money machine and the market's close to saturation in the UK but the global football market still has a lot of room for growth and the EPL has stolen a march on the other big leagues over the last decade in their sales abroad. I can only see it growing for a while yet. Brexit could be disastrous for the quality of the EPL and kill its commercial viability when competing against other leagues for airtime abroad but I imagine Murdoch Inc. will lobby heavily to see footballers as having 'desired skills' in whatever new immigration policy we bring in.

One big threat to competition though will be La Liga's restructuring of their broadcasting rights to be sold by the league rather than the old model of clubs selling their rights individually. That's already seen a huge boost in their revenues for smaller clubs and if the rest of the league can start to challenge the big 3 that's only a good thing for their entertainment value.

Good point, the foreign TV deal is up to almost 30% of the total TV package, and that will surely continue to rise.

Yeah even if the next UK deal does shrink (which I think it might) global growth should offset it.

Just saw the HT. Great news, though I can't offer any advice since we've only got one ourselves. If this keeps you in the DZ more often, that is certainly good to hear.

I am not owning but rather enjoying Lukaku from afar -- if he scores my hunch was right, if he trolls my hunch was right.

Who is on everyone's radar at the moment? Personally I'm thinking...

Blind (if stays at United and classed a Def)
    KDB
    Townsend
    Payet
    Hazard
    Rooney (if a mid)
    Aguero

I see a lot of people talk about how players are 'due a goal.' Sometimes I even hear people suggest that players have 'earned their fair share of points' after a haul. This is nonsense and not based on probability but human instinct.

People might look at a four game streak and see that 'player A' looks like he has a good run, and bring him in. However, after three games they haven't done a thing. The team owner will state that he is 'due some points.' This belief comes from the basis that initially 'player A' is very likely to score points across the four matches, so if he didn't succeed in the first three, his expected points will arrive in the fourth.
However, after those three matches, there is only one match to score in remaining, and that match should be considered by itself, not the last in a group of four. The probability of him scoring points is no longer the same probability as before the first three matches. The chances are, the player is on bad form rather than 'due some points.' (On some occasions, the player might just be extremely unlucky, e.g. hitting the crossbar multiple times. In this case, my point doesn't stand.)

Furthermore, people might see that 'player B' also has a great run in those four matches and bring him in. After the first win, he gets as many points as he was expected to get over the four weeks. The team owner might say that he's had his share of the points of the four weeks. However, the expected number of points will change. The last three matches should not be considered as three of a block of four, but a new set of three matches after the first one is over. He is, if anything, in form and likely to get even more points. I see this scenario less often because of many knee-jerk reactions.

In short, Bale is on goalscoring form. De Bruyne is not, even if he is playing well. There is no evidence that Bale will stop scoring and that KDB is 'due a goal.'
    I willl be capping Bale.
