The third quarter-final of Euro 2016 gets underway at 8pm this evening as Germany and Italy go head-to-head in Bordeaux.

Having won three and drawn one of their four fixtures, Joachim Low’s side are the favourites for tonight’s encounter and warmed up for this one with a 3-0 hammering of Slovakia last time out.

Delving into the data, Germany certainly carry the greatest threat. The World Champions lead their opponents for attempts on goal by a massive 83 to 36, though have scored just one more time than Antonio Conte’s troops and netted a mere 7.2% of their scoring opportunities. Italy, on the other hand, have been far less wasteful and boast a 13.9% conversion rat,e which is the third highest in the tournament.

At the back, both sides have been hugely impressive. Indeed, Germany are the only side yet to concede and have allowed their opponents a mere seven shots inside the penalty box so far.

The Azzurri, though, have been breached on just one occasion – a 1-0 loss to the Republic of Ireland where Conte made eight changes to his XI.

Having sent defending champions Spain crashing out in the previous round, a buoyant Italy are more than capable of causing another upset and clinching a place in the last four alongside Portugal and Wales.

Just wanted to give my thoughts on Batshuayi, couldn't help myself. Always exciting when one of the most enticing, young talents come to the PL!:

What an interesting prospect Chelsea have snagged, one of the most sought after strikers & for very good reasons. First off, statistically he's very impressive. Second to Kane for expected goals + expected assists over 90 by young players since 2010 (according to Michael Caley's xG model):

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/fancy-stats/wp/2016/05/26/marseilles-michy-batshuayi-and-other-players-ready-for-a-bigger-stage/

    - His 2014-15 season: (Ted Knutson) https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CAy3LJEUYAIBPeW.png

Started 6 matches(19 subs), he had no assists but netted 7 goals. Per 90 he had 0.9 SitB, & averaged 0.70 key passes per 90. Pretty good start.

    - 2015-2016: (fussballradars)
    https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CjjxYsHXEAEdwL8.jpg

He had 17 goals (non-PK), that's fourth just behind Ibra, Cavani & Lacazette. Also had 9 assists last season with an xG of 18.1, in a span of 32 apps. Averaged 2.0 SitB & roughly 0.90 key pass per 90 last season as well.

So he's improved his passing% & key passes pretty handsomely this season. As well as his SitB. Definitely showing signs of maturity & being a bit less selfish which he's known for. He's been at his best in a 2 striker formation & especially in the second half of last season where he was paired up with Steven Fletcher. They made for a good duo & I think Bat's best performances came then. He has a great touch, & is great at playing with his back to goal. Tbh his main fault is his inconsistency (normal for his age) & his ego can get the best of him as he can get selfish at times (ma bode well for FPL 😉 )

I don't think we'll be seeing him as a lone-striker for that reason as he's too inexperienced. Definitely not his forte. More importantly Conte will more than likely play his 334 or 424, so a two-striker set-up is obvious here like most predict. Guy couldn't ask for a better coach/mentor than Conte to teach him, & fine-tune his skills or how to make the best use of a striking partner. He's known for being direct so I'm sure he'll slap some sense into the 22 y/o whenever he slips up. Proper mentor that eh? 😉

The future is bright for the lad, one of the most promising young strikers for a while. Has the physicality to hold his own in the PL, he's can dribble very well and is pretty powerful to boot. He's pretty quick & just in general very mobile for a striker of his size, & can play exceptionally well off both his feet, Not to mention impressive game awareness for his age. All the attributes are there to shine in a striking partnership. Just needs to work on involving other teammates a bit more & being more consistent. Though with age comes wisdom & all that jazz 😉

Just as an addendum, wanted to add some 'early reviews' from the people that know him best (ex-coaches & compatriots) & what to expect from him:
      http://www.tribalfootball.com/articles/michy-batshuayi-what-they-say-about-chelsea-s-imminent-signing-4136235

"This is a forward who has great potential. Everyone can see that this is a striker, a real one. In the last 20 metres, he is always ready. In his movement, I find him impressive." - Fabrizio Ravanelli

"He has everything to become a great striker. He is strong, can beat a defender with speed and has a sense of purpose." - Eric Deleu

"He is mobile, has two good feet, is quick enough and can play with his back to goal. He has become more mature and I like him more.
"Actually, this lad is perhaps the best striker Belgian has." - Marc Degryse

"After they changed their strikers, we thought we'd win. Gignac being top scorer, we thought that the worst was over. But then Batshuayi came on and punished us twice." - Christophe Galtier

"He will be missed. If you give him two chances, he is going to score. You never realise the importance of a player until he's gone." - Laurent Ciman

So there is only going to be 2 more seasons of Game of Thrones and they will be short ones. How can they possibly finish the story in that much time?

There's a rumor of a possible movie after these 2 seasons to wrap up the story. Apparently there's an extra 3 hours or so of filming left in the contract or something after the show ends.

Supposedly these will be longer episodes than normal brw

There are still rumours about characters coming back who have been in the books and there are so many stories to wrap up.

Longer episode an a film would help

Mostly but sometimes they draw something in and you think that has already happened. I wouldn't want to spoil anything.

Once you have finished there a couple of short stories you may like as well The Hedge Knight and The Sworn Sword. They are really good

                  Ooohlala, that plot thickens 😯

Color me intrigued, I'll give those a looksie then. Really enjoyed Tales of Dunk and Egg btw, I have a feeling if they ever made an attempt at a sequel, that'd be it.

He should read Stephen Kings 'On Writing', could learn a thing or two. He even interviewed him a few months back & asked him ""How the f*** do you write so fast?" 😛

I haven't read a lot of Stephen Kings work. Mostly because he writes them quicker than I can read them.

I think I have only read The Dead Zone and The Shining. Both really good

He has his lows, guess it's a byproduct of writing 2000 words a day & 55 books in 42 years.

Really disliked Dreamcatcher. His old content's miles better, but I've heard great things about 11.22.63 & that it's a call back to form. You should definitely read The Dark Tower series, or at least just the first book The Gunslinger.

The TV series (stars James Franco) has been very well reviewed as well fwiw, definitely give it a whirl.

Don't forget 'On Writing' 😉 Think it's go-to reading for any aspiring writer or just if you're curious on how his books came about.

I see many have fallen victim to premature IDjaculation, now left with empty promises. The strong will have come prepared with ample variations of 'juuhuu' for various reactions, ready to strike at a moments notice. A long perilous week awaits us gentlemen. Time will tell who was the true victor, but for now...no one is safe.

    I've only

Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli returned to pre-season training at Melwood after a year on loan at AC Milan... by hiding in the back of a taxi. (Sun)

      I was reading that earlier.

When they say hiding in the back of a taxi do you think he was in the boot?

Otherwise surely he was just in the back of the taxi. I have sat in the back of taxi's many times and I cannot think of anywhere I could hide tbh.

I suspect he was in reality just sat in the back seat. But it sounds better for the papers

Yeah, I didn't get that either. Surely not in the boot, lol.

Maybe he was sitting in the back seat and dropped to the floor as soon as he saw the cameras, hence "hiding".

Great CB & is only 25. Not really a ball-playing CB though, hopefully Bonucci's still a target.

It'd be great to see both a strict ball-playing CB in Bonucci. A more physical yet still capable of being a good ball-playing CB in Koulibaly (long-range passes are improving), & two warriors in midfield with Kane & Naing. Probably a pipe dream in one transfer window, but a man can wish.

For next week? Well it depends who comes through tonight's fixture really. If Gomez is injured Gotze could be a midfield OOP prospect again, Bale would be good. Shame Ramsey is suspended, Muller has to score sometime as well

RVP , Rooney & Drogba used to corners and get many assists cos its always better to atleast have a chance than to not have any with your start striker in the box.

Also , set pieces tab have him + saw him take 2 corners against Slovakia 😉

Yes Cotterill for sure, but he tended to play when Wales had lots of injuries, doubt he will start though. Looks like Allen then maybe. Not sure if King or David Edwards take corners for their clubs ?
