Ashley Barnes grabs a goal and assist as Burnley open their pre-season schedule with a win in Switzerland. Southampton manager Claude Puel trials a new formation in his first match in charge, whilst a goalless draw for Hull was marred by a potentially serious injury to defender Moses Odubajo.

Stevenage 0 Watford 2

Watford recorded their first win of pre-season with a comfortable victory over Stevenage on Thursday evening.

Coach Walter Mazzarri had utilised 3-5-2 and a four-man backline for the club’s opening friendly (a 1-1 draw at Woking) but the Italian stuck with the former formation throughout the match with their League Two opponents.

Allan Nyom and Miguel Britos started either side of central defender Tommie Hoban, with Nordin Amrabat keeping his place at right wing-back and Steven Berghuis, Mario Suarez and Étienne Capoue fitting in alongside the returning José Holebas on the left.

Captain Troy Deeney was back after a slight knock and played in his usual role just behind the more advanced Odion Ighalo.

The goals came courtesy of a superb strike from midfielder Capoue, who fired into the top corner five minutes into the second-half, before substitute Jerome Sinclair headed in from close-range in the final minute from an Almen Abdi assist.

Injury-wise, Holebas and Adlene Guedioura were both forced off in the second period, whilst Ben Watson missed out altogether with a knock.

In terms of new faces, Watford have signed Colombia international full-back Juan Camilo Zuniga on a season-long loan from Napoli, where he played for four years under Mazzarri. Zuniga, 30, can play on either flank.

Watford XI: Gomes (Arlauskis, HT); Nyom, Britos, Hoban; Amrabat (Doucoure, HT), Suarez (Guedioura, HT) (Success, 75), Capoue, Berghuis (Anya, HT), Holebas (Abdi, 61); Deeney (Vydra, 82), Ighalo (Sinclair, 61).

Stade Nyonnais 1 Burnley 3

All but two of Burnley’s squad were given a run-out as Sean Dyche’s men made short work of their Swiss opponents.

Last season’s top scorer, Andre Gray opened the scoring from an Ashley Barnes through ball before the latter doubled the advantage when he headed home an Aiden O’Neill cross.

O’Neill, a 17-year-old Australian midfielder, turned in an eye-catching performance throughout, despite only being drafted into the senior squad a fortnight ago.

The hosts rallied and scored after the break before Michael Keane sealed the deal with a header from a Michael Kightly free-kick – the former Wolves winger was on set-piece duties for Burnley throughout.

Striker Lukas Jutkiewicz continued his return from a cruciate knee ligament injury with a second-half appearance.

Burnley XI: First-half: Robinson, Darikwa, Keane, Mee, Dummigan, Marney, O’Neill, Boyd, Kightly, Gray, Barnes.

Burnley XI: Second-half: Robinson (Mitchell 62), Lowton, K. Long, Tarkowski, Lafferty, C. Long, Ulvestad, Jones, Arfield, Hennings, Jutkiewicz

Grimsby Town 0 Hull City 0

Hull started their preparations for life back in the Premier League with a goalless draw at Grimsby.

Manager Steve Bruce gave 19 players a run-out at Blundell Park, but lost right back Moses Odubajo to a potentially serious injury after just five minutes.

It is feared that the England U20 international, who made 42 appearances in all competitions for the Tigers last season, dislocated his kneecap. Post-match, Bruce admitted he already fears the worst:

“Moses will be like anyone when you pick up an injury. We just hope, fingers crossed, that he’ll be okay. We need confirmation on whether he dislocated it or not. We’ll know that by scans. We need to find out if has been dislocated and whether there’s been damaged ligaments. If it has then it’s not great. I don’t want to prejudge anything but it doesn’t look great as we stand.”

His replacement, Harry Maguire, also picked up a knock in the second-half and was subbed off for Academy player Josh Clackstone.

Meanwhile, Abel Hernandez and David Meyler will join up with the squad after today’s match against North Ferriby.

The pair were given extra time off to recover from their international commitments, Hernandez with Uruguay and Meyler the Republic of Ireland. The former was the Tigers’ top scorer last season, with 22 goals, while the latter was an integral member of Bruce’s promotion-winning squad, making 35 appearances.

Hull XI: Jakupovic (Kuciak 46), Odubajo (Maguire 5, Clackstone 52), Robertson (Tymon 67), Dawson, Davies, Snodgrass (Olley 67), Livermore, Huddlestone (Bowen 46), Clucas, Maloney (Ter Horst 77), Diame (Luer 67)

DC United Under 23’s 0 Southampton 2

Goals from James Ward-Prowse and Jay Rodriguez – from a late penalty – gave new Saints boss Claude Puel a debut victory.

The Frenchman handed summer signing Nathan Redmond his first start as he trialled a 4-3-2-1 formation, with the new boy and Dusan Tadic handed room to roam behind a lone striker, and the full-backs providing width from deep.

Ward-Prowse opened the scoring in the 16th minute and Southampton were comfortable throughout, despite Puel changing the entire team for the second period. This allowed another new signing, Pierre Emile Hojbjerg, his first action in a Saints’ shirt.

Rodriguez captained that new-look XI, converting from the spot after a foul on Sam McQueen. Puel will need to monitor the fitness of Harrison Reed, though, after he limped off in the closing stages.

Southampton XI: First Half: Gazzaniga, Martina, Van Dijk, Turnbull, Targett, Romeu, Clasie, Ward-Prowse, Redmond, Tadic, Austin.

Southampton XI: Second Half: Lewis, Valery, Stephens, Jones, McQueen, Hojbjerg (Sims 65), Reed, Hesketh, Isgrove (Gallagher 70), Rodriguez, Olomola.

Aye spoke to one of my best mates yesterday after a long while (he's a United fan), he really wants to see a midfielder and central defender. Watches quite a fair bit of footy too, reckons yous should go in for a player in the Krychowiak mould to partner Schneiderlin. And a partner for Smalling, with Bailly playing in the Europa League. Sounded about fair to be honest.

It's not a lack of faith in Bailly far from it but he's young and can't be expected to hit the ground running immediately it's more of a case of Jones injury record and Rojo's general crapness which could be a problem if Smalling got injured.. although TFM could fill in there without a bother i guess..Think we will see the Southampton Schneiderlin this season back to his best under Jose.. quite a few of that squad could be like brand new players with a less rigid system

They are stocked there (Darmian, Valencia, TFM, even Jones) but lack genuine consistency/quality. Maybe between those 4, they'll be ok this season and address it next season.

Bailly has been snapped up for his potential.. was excellent for Villarreal last year but he needs work at his age Jose has said the same himself but a player so big physically and so quick at the same time can be a huge asset

A lot of improvement can be made just through the coaching as well. I think we'll see a solid United, perhaps a little reserved but that will cover weaknesses or deficiencies of individuals.

I'm pretty excited for this season with the defending boost that Conte can bring I feel we can sort out our biggest problem from last season.
I'm loooking forward to the squad developing, hopefully he will be very thorough and get rid of all the dead wood.

Would love to see a squad like this

Courtois/ begovic( rumors he might move on apparently unhappy) status:bit unsettled

Full backs: left side is sorted with a strong rotation pair of baba and azpi, right is dodgy would like to see Ivan become second choice and a fresh new right back come in with the ability to bomb up and down the pitch (perhaps give young youth prospect Ola aina a chance) Status: not much of a concern

Center backs: I feel we need to freshen up the heart of the defense, Zouma first choice and Koulibally next to him if he actually joins.Cahill and Terry good rotation pair , but if Terry's form gets worse Miazga ahead of him he looked very promising last season. Status: needs addressing

Wingers: Hazard on the left with Willian and Pedro rotating on the right could prove to be very strong hopefully Pedro can find his feet a bit more this season. We could do with another winger with rumors of Felipe Anderson and Candreva joining, I would prefer Anderson personally. With Victor moses returning he could prove to be a valuable asset. Status: fairly sorted.

Midfield:with Kante arrival imminent and Fabregas partnering him the double pivot seems pretty sorted. Matic and Oscar rumors still pretty strong, it could leave us a little light in midfield. I believe we will only sell one of them with my preference of Oscar being sold. RLC and mikel are decent back up options but don't feel fully comfortable with them playing regularly. I would say we need at least another 1 or 2 signings in the center of the park with Witsel being a ideal option imo. Status: potential trouble area

Striker: with Costa and Batshauyi we have very solid options, I would like to see another quality striker upfront,I'm not even sure if Remy plays for us anymore. Morata would fit our style of play very well so got my fingers crossed he may sign for us.

With a estimated budget of 140mil this season we could be on for a big overhaul, with Kante about to take about 30 mil out of that, the future is not looking as blue as it has in the past few months. Opinions appreciated

Im in this boat currently. Zlatan will be great but I don't see him being totally prolific... But Mkhi on the other hand will create the vast majority of chances in the squad and be priced lower, surely.

Both would be ideal, but feels a little overkill.

They've proven they can survive without their stars and win things (it's a bit harder to win Bundesliga because of Bayern, of course). Doing the same this summer with players like Emre Mor and Ousmane Dembele.

That's what they've done in recent times and it has worked out very well for them. They're still a very solid team and with Gotze signing for them they should do quite well. Probably won't win the league tho, Bayern's squad (even the bench) is too darn good.

It's not just Dortmund who have to deal with that problem, it's much the same for most of the league. Bayern....then the rest. It's a very competitive league from 2nd to bottom though.

Mönchengladbach (for one) have to deal with similar. They've lost Xhaka and Nordtveit (who their fans loved), so replaced them with Kramer who is quality, Tobias Strobl on a free, and promoted the highly-rated Ndenge for next season. Life goes on....

It's Darmstadt 98 that people should feel sorry for.

Would like to see some of the budget moves amongst the FFS community from the off.

Comment below some of the inclusions you're most likely to include in your drafts, primarily from the 3 promoted sides or other budget team options like Watford or Palace... (i.e. Middlesbrough defense, Hull defense, Gray in your front 3, ect..)

It all depends on prices, give me the price list and I'll tell you where I'm looking for budget options. There are legions of defenders who I'll gloss over at 4.5 but would become almost essential to me at 4.0. Similar goes for midfielders on the 5.0/4.5 boundary.

Pretty much any of them that looks like getting consistent game time, it doesn't matter to me if their team is rubbish they'll be my second and third autosubs doing a job of letting me get as much team value on the pitch as possible.

Yeah its the big one with the most prestige and he nails it almost every year. Crashing in Yorkshire two years ago was a real heartbreaker but apart from that Tour he's picked up stages every year since 2008. I'm sure Eisel will get him through in the broom wagon for the next sprint on stage 16. I hope he stays on at the Tour after that for the Champs-Elysees finish but he does need to get back to Olympic training soon.

Depend if you are having Aguero as well. Iberia and Aguero even with a cheapie fwd of reasonable note will put a bigger hole in your midfield than you might like.

Even a front line of Aguero Mid priced and Cheap usually means compromise in midfield.

Number of seasons in the last 10 years that Leicester have been in the CL : 0 (First this year)

Number of seasons that Chelsea have NOT been in UCL in last 10 years : 0 (First this year)

Any sound person would do what Kante did if it wasn't his boyhood club.

Not sure. Seem to recall him playing deeper when he got a rare chance under Mourinho.

Very tight in the cricket, Pakistan lead by 236, 4 wickets remaining in their 2nd innings.
      Betting is: ENG 5/6 - PAK 21/20.
