Ashley Barnes grabs a goal and assist as Burnley open their pre-season schedule with a win in Switzerland. Southampton manager Claude Puel trials a new formation in his first match in charge, whilst a goalless draw for Hull was marred by a potentially serious injury to defender Moses Odubajo.

Stevenage 0 Watford 2

Watford recorded their first win of pre-season with a comfortable victory over Stevenage on Thursday evening.

Coach Walter Mazzarri had utilised 3-5-2 and a four-man backline for the club’s opening friendly (a 1-1 draw at Woking) but the Italian stuck with the former formation throughout the match with their League Two opponents.

Allan Nyom and Miguel Britos started either side of central defender Tommie Hoban, with Nordin Amrabat keeping his place at right wing-back and Steven Berghuis, Mario Suarez and Étienne Capoue fitting in alongside the returning José Holebas on the left.

Captain Troy Deeney was back after a slight knock and played in his usual role just behind the more advanced Odion Ighalo.

The goals came courtesy of a superb strike from midfielder Capoue, who fired into the top corner five minutes into the second-half, before substitute Jerome Sinclair headed in from close-range in the final minute from an Almen Abdi assist.

Injury-wise, Holebas and Adlene Guedioura were both forced off in the second period, whilst Ben Watson missed out altogether with a knock.

In terms of new faces, Watford have signed Colombia international full-back Juan Camilo Zuniga on a season-long loan from Napoli, where he played for four years under Mazzarri. Zuniga, 30, can play on either flank.

Watford XI: Gomes (Arlauskis, HT); Nyom, Britos, Hoban; Amrabat (Doucoure, HT), Suarez (Guedioura, HT) (Success, 75), Capoue, Berghuis (Anya, HT), Holebas (Abdi, 61); Deeney (Vydra, 82), Ighalo (Sinclair, 61).

Stade Nyonnais 1 Burnley 3

All but two of Burnley’s squad were given a run-out as Sean Dyche’s men made short work of their Swiss opponents.

Last season’s top scorer, Andre Gray opened the scoring from an Ashley Barnes through ball before the latter doubled the advantage when he headed home an Aiden O’Neill cross.

O’Neill, a 17-year-old Australian midfielder, turned in an eye-catching performance throughout, despite only being drafted into the senior squad a fortnight ago.

The hosts rallied and scored after the break before Michael Keane sealed the deal with a header from a Michael Kightly free-kick – the former Wolves winger was on set-piece duties for Burnley throughout.

Striker Lukas Jutkiewicz continued his return from a cruciate knee ligament injury with a second-half appearance.

Burnley XI: First-half: Robinson, Darikwa, Keane, Mee, Dummigan, Marney, O’Neill, Boyd, Kightly, Gray, Barnes.

Burnley XI: Second-half: Robinson (Mitchell 62), Lowton, K. Long, Tarkowski, Lafferty, C. Long, Ulvestad, Jones, Arfield, Hennings, Jutkiewicz

Grimsby Town 0 Hull City 0

Hull started their preparations for life back in the Premier League with a goalless draw at Grimsby.

Manager Steve Bruce gave 19 players a run-out at Blundell Park, but lost right back Moses Odubajo to a potentially serious injury after just five minutes.

It is feared that the England U20 international, who made 42 appearances in all competitions for the Tigers last season, dislocated his kneecap. Post-match, Bruce admitted he already fears the worst:

“Moses will be like anyone when you pick up an injury. We just hope, fingers crossed, that he’ll be okay. We need confirmation on whether he dislocated it or not. We’ll know that by scans. We need to find out if has been dislocated and whether there’s been damaged ligaments. If it has then it’s not great. I don’t want to prejudge anything but it doesn’t look great as we stand.”

His replacement, Harry Maguire, also picked up a knock in the second-half and was subbed off for Academy player Josh Clackstone.

Meanwhile, Abel Hernandez and David Meyler will join up with the squad after today’s match against North Ferriby.

The pair were given extra time off to recover from their international commitments, Hernandez with Uruguay and Meyler the Republic of Ireland. The former was the Tigers’ top scorer last season, with 22 goals, while the latter was an integral member of Bruce’s promotion-winning squad, making 35 appearances.

Hull XI: Jakupovic (Kuciak 46), Odubajo (Maguire 5, Clackstone 52), Robertson (Tymon 67), Dawson, Davies, Snodgrass (Olley 67), Livermore, Huddlestone (Bowen 46), Clucas, Maloney (Ter Horst 77), Diame (Luer 67)

DC United Under 23’s 0 Southampton 2

Goals from James Ward-Prowse and Jay Rodriguez – from a late penalty – gave new Saints boss Claude Puel a debut victory.

The Frenchman handed summer signing Nathan Redmond his first start as he trialled a 4-3-2-1 formation, with the new boy and Dusan Tadic handed room to roam behind a lone striker, and the full-backs providing width from deep.

Ward-Prowse opened the scoring in the 16th minute and Southampton were comfortable throughout, despite Puel changing the entire team for the second period. This allowed another new signing, Pierre Emile Hojbjerg, his first action in a Saints’ shirt.

Rodriguez captained that new-look XI, converting from the spot after a foul on Sam McQueen. Puel will need to monitor the fitness of Harrison Reed, though, after he limped off in the closing stages.

Southampton XI: First Half: Gazzaniga, Martina, Van Dijk, Turnbull, Targett, Romeu, Clasie, Ward-Prowse, Redmond, Tadic, Austin.

Southampton XI: Second Half: Lewis, Valery, Stephens, Jones, McQueen, Hojbjerg (Sims 65), Reed, Hesketh, Isgrove (Gallagher 70), Rodriguez, Olomola.

Have to imagine Mane will be around 7.5-8. He'll definitely have a spot in my midfield. Even his former manager at RB Salzburg says Mane will gather more goals and assists in a pressing style like Klopp's. But will he be a differential?

Liverpool fixtures are very tough to start.

Id imagine obviously price dependent but id be leaning towards an Ibrahimovic/Mhkitaryan double up with Shaw to give me a full compliment of United.

I think going into FPL with a no-Ibrahimovic mentality could be a poor move as he is potentially the best player in the league but time will tell.

So? Injuries can do it, loss of place can do it, regularly getting subbed off/on can do it... lots of things can lead to price drops. That's my point.

However we are talking about a player that scored 8 goals in 8 PL games at the end of the season and has just moved to a bigger club for £30m. The idea that his starting value for FPL will be the same or lower than last season is ludicrous.

                • 12 Years
                9 years, 4 months ago

Injuries can lead to price drops your right, but that wasn't Mane's case. he dropped from 8.0 to 7.3 because he went 20 gameweeks without a goal. The 8 in 8 salvaged his season but ultimately he finished with a lower ppg than in 2014/15.

I don't see him dropping in price but I could see him staying the same at 8.0. That said I understand the bigger club protectionism FPL puts into its pricing and wouldn't be surprised by 8.5m.

They still need work on their site.

Seriously; I reckon 50% of transfers will be forced on you due to injury, dropped by bad form or long suspensions usually later in the year. Which leaves you 20 transfers.
So the best tip is to put players in from the off who are likely to play every week and not to panic if they don't rack up huge points from the off.

Yeah Gray. I think wilson will be a cheap differential aswell and hopefully good. I'm getting one of those 2, obviously all down to when prices come out.
Negredo could be good, I'm assuming he'll be nailed.

Plus we only recently got to see the first pre-season games, not to mention a lot of moves in transfer market . Just such a lack of crucial information here & yet people are already planning their XI's, who's 'essential', rotations, DGW planning, etc.

I don't remember last season being so hectic in the 'pre' pre-season.

Silva, because he should be around 9.0-9.5m, and having KDB and Aguero in one team will be too expensive (given I'll try to get Mkhi and maybe Zlatan). Also, if he went back to his best (which he probably won't), he would outscore Kevin De Bruyne.

Subject to how Pep intends to set the team up: I'd rather KDB if he's played centrally & honestly, I'd put Nolito above Silva as well if classed as a midfielder. 37 goals & 22 assists in 83 apps (17 subs) is not too shabby for an inverted-winger. Both of these have more goal threat & linger in the box more, especially Nolito.

As above, and at the risk of becoming a Silva bore...

Sometimes, but not very often at all, two players are like hand and glove...they just fit. A couple of years ago I ran some stats to show the pts accrued for David Silva (fully fit) when playing alongside Aguero (fully fit)...and the returns were fab. IMO when both players are fit (ha) David Silva will probably remain as one of the top picks in the game...sadly...both players fully fit doesn't happen often enough, and maybe never will.

Ayala and Subotic however Ayala is currently injured and in contract talks. Some rumours even suggest he could be sold. If that were to happen then Subotic and Gibson with Espinosa as competition.
My advice at this moment is Subotic, Valdes or Friend. Get at least one in.

It's a demonstration of how low social values are. I'm all for learning self defense and I know how much skilled is involved but paying people (usually poor background) to beat the living daylights out of each other is nothing short of barbaric. We might as well make bear fighting a sport too

Perfectly good point. But the fighters do earn well out of these kind of things.

Often people from these environments have limited opportunities available to them fighting in it's various forms along with other sports are often one of the few ways out to them. You take that away and it takes even that away.

      Bellator is second-rate to UFC.

I watch every UFC event but have never bothered with Bellator. I just switched over to this and within minutes I noticed a handful of fighters in this company who were recently assigned to the UFC. Ex-champ Benson Henderson for one, after losing his way in the big boys league, and Melvin Guillard who's an average journeyman fighter. I always wondered what happened to Josh Koscheck too, he's in Bellator it seems.

Indeed. Just a brawler who happened to have some strength, nothing more. Zero cardio/movement/BJJ etc will get you nowhere in the UFC.

Sanchez Bolasie Silva Eriksen 4.5 is what i'm hoping will be affordable....Maybe not the best combo for pts but my fave players for sure.

KDB may well out point Silva but the stats are bit misleading because Silva had so many injuries last year, which led to more early subs than normal and he wasn't right even when he did play for a large chunk of the season.

A bit on the premium side for sure but damn those fixtures look swell.

      • 10 Years

West Ham have never been solid at the back with Bilić in charge, and him playing Antionio at RB doesn't help that. Also, their record against bottom of the table teams was pretty much awful last season, even at home. I'll stay clear unless there are signs of improvement during the season.

Just reading back on some speculative RMT's from today....most of them are just totally unrealistic.

In order to get anything close to a decent squad in GW1 the crucial positions, as always, will be the right cheap striker option and the right mid priced mid between 6.0 and 7.0/7.5 .... Plenty of ink is being spilt about the cheap fwd but what about the mid priced mid ?...Who do we fancy ?

        He may well do.

Alli, Lala, Ramsey and the like have always been the key positions for early doors squads....sadly we on FFS are usually a bit slow on the uptake...

So far i'm thinking Bolasie, Ibe, Gardel...

Any interesting transfer speculations? I haven't really followed any transfer gossips since United signed Mkhi.

Well, it's about 2 weeks story so far. 😀 Not going so well of course, tho I told her I want her.

Enner Valencia to Swansea looks most interesting to me. Clash for Witsel, etc, etc.

True, we've been quick and ambitious. Ramirez is the best option due to set pieces but someone like Fischer or Adomah could be a decent cheap option. Downing may hit better form this year but I'd avoid for now.

I am on mobile and by default replies to comments don't show, I have to access them manually. Any idea how I fix this?

Blog back up and running, hopefully pre season planning will work out a wee bit better than it did last year.
Im guessing many of us made a poor start, despite a whole month of analysing players and fixtures etc.

Will it be better this season? Hopefully so. History points to last season being an outlier. Personally it was my first bad start in Eight years of playing the game

Last year gave the thumbs up to Hazard, Fabregas, Costa, Darmian, Shaw, Depay, Rooney , Clyne, Hazard, Silva , Walcott, Sterling and many more. All were well regarded pre season, and went a long way to making up the template. Reason to think this season will be different?
