Ashley Barnes grabs a goal and assist as Burnley open their pre-season schedule with a win in Switzerland. Southampton manager Claude Puel trials a new formation in his first match in charge, whilst a goalless draw for Hull was marred by a potentially serious injury to defender Moses Odubajo.

Stevenage 0 Watford 2

Watford recorded their first win of pre-season with a comfortable victory over Stevenage on Thursday evening.

Coach Walter Mazzarri had utilised 3-5-2 and a four-man backline for the club’s opening friendly (a 1-1 draw at Woking) but the Italian stuck with the former formation throughout the match with their League Two opponents.

Allan Nyom and Miguel Britos started either side of central defender Tommie Hoban, with Nordin Amrabat keeping his place at right wing-back and Steven Berghuis, Mario Suarez and Étienne Capoue fitting in alongside the returning José Holebas on the left.

Captain Troy Deeney was back after a slight knock and played in his usual role just behind the more advanced Odion Ighalo.

The goals came courtesy of a superb strike from midfielder Capoue, who fired into the top corner five minutes into the second-half, before substitute Jerome Sinclair headed in from close-range in the final minute from an Almen Abdi assist.

Injury-wise, Holebas and Adlene Guedioura were both forced off in the second period, whilst Ben Watson missed out altogether with a knock.

In terms of new faces, Watford have signed Colombia international full-back Juan Camilo Zuniga on a season-long loan from Napoli, where he played for four years under Mazzarri. Zuniga, 30, can play on either flank.

Watford XI: Gomes (Arlauskis, HT); Nyom, Britos, Hoban; Amrabat (Doucoure, HT), Suarez (Guedioura, HT) (Success, 75), Capoue, Berghuis (Anya, HT), Holebas (Abdi, 61); Deeney (Vydra, 82), Ighalo (Sinclair, 61).

Stade Nyonnais 1 Burnley 3

All but two of Burnley’s squad were given a run-out as Sean Dyche’s men made short work of their Swiss opponents.

Last season’s top scorer, Andre Gray opened the scoring from an Ashley Barnes through ball before the latter doubled the advantage when he headed home an Aiden O’Neill cross.

O’Neill, a 17-year-old Australian midfielder, turned in an eye-catching performance throughout, despite only being drafted into the senior squad a fortnight ago.

The hosts rallied and scored after the break before Michael Keane sealed the deal with a header from a Michael Kightly free-kick – the former Wolves winger was on set-piece duties for Burnley throughout.

Striker Lukas Jutkiewicz continued his return from a cruciate knee ligament injury with a second-half appearance.

Burnley XI: First-half: Robinson, Darikwa, Keane, Mee, Dummigan, Marney, O’Neill, Boyd, Kightly, Gray, Barnes.

Burnley XI: Second-half: Robinson (Mitchell 62), Lowton, K. Long, Tarkowski, Lafferty, C. Long, Ulvestad, Jones, Arfield, Hennings, Jutkiewicz

Grimsby Town 0 Hull City 0

Hull started their preparations for life back in the Premier League with a goalless draw at Grimsby.

Manager Steve Bruce gave 19 players a run-out at Blundell Park, but lost right back Moses Odubajo to a potentially serious injury after just five minutes.

It is feared that the England U20 international, who made 42 appearances in all competitions for the Tigers last season, dislocated his kneecap. Post-match, Bruce admitted he already fears the worst:

“Moses will be like anyone when you pick up an injury. We just hope, fingers crossed, that he’ll be okay. We need confirmation on whether he dislocated it or not. We’ll know that by scans. We need to find out if has been dislocated and whether there’s been damaged ligaments. If it has then it’s not great. I don’t want to prejudge anything but it doesn’t look great as we stand.”

His replacement, Harry Maguire, also picked up a knock in the second-half and was subbed off for Academy player Josh Clackstone.

Meanwhile, Abel Hernandez and David Meyler will join up with the squad after today’s match against North Ferriby.

The pair were given extra time off to recover from their international commitments, Hernandez with Uruguay and Meyler the Republic of Ireland. The former was the Tigers’ top scorer last season, with 22 goals, while the latter was an integral member of Bruce’s promotion-winning squad, making 35 appearances.

Hull XI: Jakupovic (Kuciak 46), Odubajo (Maguire 5, Clackstone 52), Robertson (Tymon 67), Dawson, Davies, Snodgrass (Olley 67), Livermore, Huddlestone (Bowen 46), Clucas, Maloney (Ter Horst 77), Diame (Luer 67)

DC United Under 23’s 0 Southampton 2

Goals from James Ward-Prowse and Jay Rodriguez – from a late penalty – gave new Saints boss Claude Puel a debut victory.

The Frenchman handed summer signing Nathan Redmond his first start as he trialled a 4-3-2-1 formation, with the new boy and Dusan Tadic handed room to roam behind a lone striker, and the full-backs providing width from deep.

Ward-Prowse opened the scoring in the 16th minute and Southampton were comfortable throughout, despite Puel changing the entire team for the second period. This allowed another new signing, Pierre Emile Hojbjerg, his first action in a Saints’ shirt.

Rodriguez captained that new-look XI, converting from the spot after a foul on Sam McQueen. Puel will need to monitor the fitness of Harrison Reed, though, after he limped off in the closing stages.

Southampton XI: First Half: Gazzaniga, Martina, Van Dijk, Turnbull, Targett, Romeu, Clasie, Ward-Prowse, Redmond, Tadic, Austin.

Southampton XI: Second Half: Lewis, Valery, Stephens, Jones, McQueen, Hojbjerg (Sims 65), Reed, Hesketh, Isgrove (Gallagher 70), Rodriguez, Olomola.

TH I answered your SKY question earlier.

As for prices the SKY ones should give an indication of what to expect allowing for their £100mil budget for 11 players.

Yeah thanks I saw that but while I'm grateful in my head for the reply I didn't actually acknowledge that which isn't great etiquette.

I think I'll give Sky a go. I like the whole concept of the cash mini leagues that it's done through skybet etc. I play for cash really anyway so it seems a logic step however I'll just dabble to start and not go crazy with buy ins.

I'm Australian but living in Canada - flights are cheap from here to Ireland at the moment but my end goal is to move back to London (I have British Passport) - seems like I may as well wait until it's a 1 hour flight from instead of a 12 hour one!

I have plans to marry a nice Irish girl, have you seen Sing Street? You should watch that 🙂

                      Yeah the flights are cheap.

A lot of Irish young people are now going to Canada to work and live. Australia very popular also, but Canada has grown in popularity in recent years.

I haven't seen that but have just googled it. Interesting! Must give that a watch very soon. I assume you have seen it?

i really like it as it gets away from template plans and in larger leagues(15) it can get very tight-I think I have be very fortunate in this league.
if you want a bash head over heels runs 3 leagues with promotion and relegation-he's very efficent-if you dont know him i can put you in contact.

the novelty factor about his fantrax is to accomodate all time zones it takes place over 9 days during the second international break(october)-sounds like it shouldnt work but it does and you get good banter

Nice one mate. Extremely well written and a unique statistical perspective.
Do you think it can reveal truth in football? Goals are rare and often unpredictable compared to other sports. How often do we see dominant individual performances not rewarded with a goal, or inferior performances that are? Likewise for conceded.

        • 12 Years
        9 years, 4 months ago

Cheers Champ. Certainly not over an international tournament, here it just becomes narrative confirming and overlooks things such as Portugal's shot and xG dominance (Ronaldo really should have scored more than he did) and the error margins are so large you really can't say too much definitively. That said I'm hopeful for the results I get back-testing domestic leagues over the next few weeks as it works on a similar top-down premise to GoalImpact (http://www.goalimpact.com/) but not with their Bayesian secret sauce which is quite well regarded.

The drawback of top-down analytics is that even if you do get to nail down who's good and who's bad that's great for scouting, but it won't tell you what makes them good or bad or if their skills are transferrable from their current club to your club. Once you've got the lists of who's good and who's bad you've got to then look at them as individuals and cohorts and use video and event data to see what separates the best from the worst. That said I'm really excited by these as a starting point because you need so little information just line-ups, substitutions, goals and red cards. That makes it really accessible even in 3rd, 4th and 5th tier football where OPTA data doesn't publicly tread.

        • 12 Years
        9 years, 4 months ago

One thing I would like to see tested in the top leagues is using on-pitch xGD rather than on-pitch GD to see if that helps to tighten the screws further and work towards minimising the finishing problems you described, but then you need a complex xG model to plug into the Massey equations.

Pardon my ignorance, x represents what?

            • 12 Years
            9 years, 4 months ago

Ah sorry, xG = expected goals. Its an estimation of the quality of chances that a football team creates or concedes in a match using shot location, how the shot was created and the type of shot it was (header, left footed, right footed or other) as variables amongst other things.

Michael Caley is main guy for xG stuff on the web and here's his explanation of them: http://cartilagefreecaptain.sbnation.com/2015/4/10/8381071/football-statistics-expected-goals-michael-caley-deadspin

            his calculations for shots:
            http://cartilagefreecaptain.sbnation.com/2015/10/19/9295905/premier-league-projections-and-new-expected-goals

and his xG map for the Euros final as an example, where bigger squares = a better chance had.

    http://www.gazettelive.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/defensive-cover-needed-enthralling-selection-11624932?
Went to doncaster v middlesborough yesterday and this article sums up,solid but with little forward amibition at the moment.
Not much there for fpl -the article notes the current shortage of reliable defenders
What the article fails to note is
-the steadfast and shouting/organisation ability of Friend-nothing 'were' going past him-if 4.0 fodder could be good.
-that MID currently didnt have a clue about using set pieces and did not look at all drilled in this aspect.
-after the match ,oldskool, the players+manager signed every ball, piece of paper, selfy put to them-many a young fans season has already been made-a credit to MID and great to see nowadays.
(And no I'm not a fan-just a curious football watcher).

Does anyone have the secret to getting your gameweek one team right?

Last year, I was ranked 3 mill after week 1, 3 mill after week 2. Horror start. Remember picking the likes of Rooney and Kane thinking they would continue their form from the previous season.

the youngster certainly has talent and his g/per min is high.
I'd prefer a more reliable striker @ same price-I'd be interested to see difference in price between ike and c.wilson for instance.
bony will have gone(probably in the misguided stones deal).
but nolito is now here-I suspect the rotation will be between these 2 older players with a buzzing midfield

i was finking 4-5-1 or 4-4-2 this season

predicting more clean sheets thats my gamble for this season
            1 extra defender
not sure if i should go for 2 or 1 striker thou

i suspect 1 extra defender will give me some extra money to play with to strenghten my midfilders

              good luck
orthodoxy here is 3 strikers investing heavily in at least 2.
Personally its looking like a season of stella quality strikers-I don't see a CS season at this stage
-the prices will determine much of this I suspect

again prices determines so much of this
going 3 all in on the fixtures of a team that struggled so badly last time would not be my initial plan unless your purchases were to enable the stellar signings
heaton and barnes at least have current form and EPL form-will Barnes be given the regular games?
Gray I personally think will struggle in EPL

It does sound a tad much tbf.
I might go with Heaton, I like Keane, hoping for something a bit better than Gray for a 3rd striker.

liverpool playing wigan today and huddersfield on wednesday-how serious is Klopp! (or the merchandisers in the northwest of britain)
If the liverpool squad survive the onslaught of matches I for one will be packing a wedge on them to wallop (strikerless?) arsenal on day 1
