Last week, Tottenham confirmed the signing of AZ Alkmaar striker Vincent Janssen for a reported fee of £17m. The Dutch international is the club’s second summer signing following the arrival of midfielder Victor Wanyama from Southampton last month.

Having penned a four-year contract at White Hart Lane, the 22-year-old is optimistic of quickly securing a spot in Mauricio Pochettino’s first-team plans.

“Harry Kane? People can say what they want but I’m not afraid of anybody…He is a great striker but we will see how it goes. We can complement each other, I think I can learn a lot from him. I hope to play a lot, to score a lot of goals and to win prizes. I have a great chance to develop myself here. I can train with a young, talented group with very good staff and I’m ready to develop myself. I can grow with this group, it’s a very talented group and next season we’re in the Champions League as well, so that’s very nice.”

The History

Born in Heesch, Netherlands, Janssen started out his youth career at SV TOP and FC Oss before moving to NEC Nijmegen at the age of 12. The forward then signed up with Dutch giants Feyenoord in 2009 and spent four years at the club’s academy, playing a part in the U19s national title-winning side in 2013.

Janssen was subsequently released at the end of the 2012/13 campaign, though, and moved to Eerste Divisie side Almere City. In two seasons for the club, Janssen made 74 appearances in all competitions, scoring 32 goals and registering 12 assists, before being acquired by AZ last summer.

The five foot 11 frontman started slowly as he stepped up to the Eredivisie, failing to score in his first 367 minutes of league action, but enjoyed a sensational second half of the campaign, ending with 32 goals and seven assists from 49 appearances in all competitions.

Janssen represented his country at all youth levels from Under 15 upwards and most notably at Under 21 level, scoring eight goals in 10 matches. Handed a senior debut against France in March, he went on to bag a goal and assist in a 2-1 win against England four days later – so far, Janssen has three goals in five appearances in his fledgling international career.

The Prospects

While Tottenham enjoyed a hugely successful season last term, the one glaring weakness in their squad was a lack of cover for Harry Kane. Pochettino has wasted little time in addressing that issue, and speaking about his latest addition, believes Janssen has both the physical and mental characteristics to make an impact in the Premier League:

“Vincent is still very young and his potential is massive to develop. He has a profile that fits perfectly for us. He has quality in the box and he’s a striker that likes to fight and work for the team. That is perfect for us. We are very happy and excited that he has joined us. His human profile is perfect for the team, we always care about that. In general, he’s a player that fits the team.”

Pochettino is a firm believer in the 4-2-3-1 formation, so initially at least, it would be somewhat surprising if Janssen forces his way into the Argentine’s first-choice starting XI. The Dutch international scored all of his goals last season from inside the box, highlighting the fact he’s very much a traditional “number 9,” with predatory instincts that are particularly impressive for such a young player.

Last season, Janssen averaged a shot every 18.1 minutes, which was a better rate than any forward in the Premier League last term and superior to Kane’s 22.1 minutes. While predominantly left footed, Janssen is a composed finisher with either foot, and has clever movement in the box. Although he’s not blessed with searing pace, the former AZ front man has a good awareness, and is capable of holding off defenders with his strength.

Kane’s packed schedule over the last 18 months is also a factor. The only forward to start all 38 league matches last season, the England international – who has been named in the first XI in 56 successive top-flight matches – has also spent his last two summers representing England in the 2015 UEFA European Under 21 Championship and at Euro 2016.

Indeed, although Kane ultimately ended the previous Premier League campaign as top scorer with 25 goals, he struggled at the start of the season and scored just once in the opening nine Gameweeks, suggesting he suffered some fatigue from his international exertions. Initially then, we may see Pochettino using Janssen to help ease the burden, perhaps as a substitute late in matches to help the Dutchman settle into life in the Premier League.

There has often been a suggestion that Kane could drop back into a slightly deeper role given his strong ability to link the play, though, so should Janssen find his feet quickly, it’s something that can’t be fully ruled out. That would, of course, dent Dele Alli’s Fantasy prospects, with the former MK Dons player perhaps having to operate in a slightly deeper midfield spot if Kane moved into the support role.

It’s perhaps unlikely but such a scenario would certainly boost the appeal of Christian Eriksen, who finished fifth last season among midfielders who made 15 or more appearances for total shots (one every 30.7 minutes), while the Dane was fourth among midfielders for chances created (one every 26.9 minutes).

Given Janssen’s goal scoring record last term, albeit from his only season of top-flight football, it’s likely the Dutch international will be handed a price tag of around 9.0 to 9.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL). With plenty of uncertainty surrounding his initial pitch time, few Fantasy managers are expected to invest in the striker from the off. Nonetheless, his addition to the Spurs squad allows Pochettino to manage Kane’s minutes a little, particularly when the Champions League group stages start in September.

Handed a schedule that sees them face just two of last term’s top eight in the first nine Gameweeks, Tottenham’s attack looks likely to catch the eye of FPL managers from the offset. Kane remains the most appealing pick, though Eriksen and Alli – price dependent – will also be in the mix when we assemble our 15-man squads.

For now, Janssen is best monitoring, then, though Pochettino’s team sheets through the final pre-season friendlies should hopefully lend some insight into his thinking. If the new boy can quickly acclimatise and force his way into the first XI, he could be another one to consider as a route into an attack that produced more attempts on goal than any other over the 2015/16 campaign.

As an LFC fan I'm forever living in hope but I would love to see a great expectations article on Danny Ings - I think he could have a huge season for us and FPL wise.

Origi? Sturridge? Potentially Firmino as well?

        Sturridge - made of glass
Origi - is he quite there yet?
Firmino can play anywhere and is probably better in attacking mid. Played up top out of necessity and dominated so not too sure where he sits.
Ings - proven in the prem and is getting a great pre-season in.

I can't see Ings being our main man upfront and looks like Klopp isn't going to play with tow up top often.

That being said he's been great for us when fit and is having a good start to preseason so at the very least a great option off the bench.

Conte - "I need to be like a tailor and make a suit to fit the players I have" - or words to that effect anyhow.

He has previously used variations of 4-4-2 as well as 3-5-2. The one constant seems to be 2 central forwards.

It's definitely a mystery/thriller, but I don't want give too much away. I think you're mixing it with The Night Of, that is closer to True Detective/The Wire, more of a look at the crime/judicial system though.

He does have a good scoring record typically right defence by the looks of thing. They have signed Antonio Barragán who is also a right back it seems but N'sue does play right wing as well.

Any chance of an OOP defender with a goal in him playing in front of a decent defence

There's still been good ones though, Mad Max: Fury Road was better than the originals imo. Jungle Book I enjoyed. Jurassic World was good fun as was Godzilla. Ghostbusters has been very well received too.

..I don't even want to tell you what else they're remaking though, things are looking grim; http://www.telegraph.co.uk/films/2016/04/14/25-films-set-for-a-reboot-or-remake/

TMNT was a legendary stuff - was devastated with their attempt 🙁

Yep Ghostbusters has been well received but not a fan actually. Jurassic Wold was interesting nonetheless but still can;t match the excitement.

Went through the list.. Commando? Cliffhanger?? 3 men and a baby?? Oh well

          you think so?

Let's say the premium is Bellerin and I'm playing him week in, week out, I need only 2 out of those 3 rotations to partner him.. Currently with A & B btw

I think you make a fair point there and it is a mistake which is easy to make without prices. This will probably involve spending too much money to operate this system

Indeed. That's why I think 1 Premium + 2 pairs of 2-way rotation is a friendlier strategy. You don't want to put too much money on the bench, and it's proven that the WHU defence did farily well at away games last season, and we already know how Mour will line up his defense at tough away games, so I'd imagine points from MUN/WHU defenders stuck on the bench will be painful

I know many prefer this kind of tactic and it may make sense to me when prices are released. I just like torturing myself with 5 man rotation systems I think.

I have done it a few ways in the past and the last few seasons I have gone very cheap at the back. Not decided yet for this season

I think your 5-way rotation could work - as long as you keep 'em low on budget and, most importantly, you can resist the temptation when a Bellerin or an Azpi run riot 🙂 Good luck with that

It does/can work. I had it for the whole period when I was top 700 last season.

But the important thing is to find the bargains and work your way back. Can't really do that without prices and without a few more friendlies to reveal the real cheapos

Merte initially but then Gab kept the spot until he got suspended then Mert stepped back in. You would think Gab might be first choice this season. He is one to watch preseason imo a possible cheapie from top team.

Given all the thousands we pay in membership fees, should Mark and co have actively been trying to find out what changes are being made to FPL if any, and report back to the members? It has been very quiet from the top scouts on the issue.
Surely FPL would give them some info, after all they do have the scout on the FPL site itself.

yeah, but then you need patience and lots of luck involved. Last season I started with PVA (He's the best 5.0) despite many telling that SUN always start slowly, and I was proven wrong. I went with triple WHU but they shone on away matches. And I also went with triple SOT (remember Targett) for their favourable early fixtures but to no avail.

This season I'm planning 5 GWs max.

Last season I stuck early on and got lucky. Starting with Mahrez of course helped mask a few other players who underperformed.

Holding on to Callum Wilson when everyone was ditching as well was good. I used my transfer to bring in Payet instead a definite win - win.

Holding on to a plan can work but it just as easily can screw you

Wow started with Mahrez well done. I had Payet on my GW1 team 😉

I think peple need to plan with regards to home-way fixtures but need to be flexible as well. Some $ itb would be useful of course.

Looking at Antonio Conte's Juventus stats for 2011-14, I am seeing Arturo Vidal(who is a rather defensive minded CM) 2nd,1st,3rd in their goal charts with 10,9,10 goals. Also has racked up around 10 assists in those seasons as well.

A concern however, was the main striker Matri and Vucinic in the first two seasons had only 10 and 9. But getting clinical strikers like Tevez and Llorente got them 19 and 16 goals in the third season. Lichsteiner racked up 8 assists(!) in Conte's last season.

Azpilicueta looks like a goldmine if we play 3-5-2. But I doubt it now as our defense is horrible right now. We would likely play 4-4-2 with Eden being the LM. Costa and Batshuayi if they are like the Tevez and Llorente pair, I am actually seeing no Hazard appeal. Conte has been playing with Average/Higher Average Wingers for now. But now with Eden Hazard, it may change. But the fact being Eden will be used a lot to help the defense regardless. Vidal, on the other hand, supported the defense and racked up goals and assist regardless.

I don't see Juventus matches as much, but if Vidal is racking these mostly because of his ability than position. Then perhaps Cesc or Oscar(if he plays that position regularly, highly unlikely) would be a rather good shout than Hazard.

Maybe he will. I hope he does. I am very pleased with our midfield and attack atm. Just another LB & CB would make this transfer window a 10/10 for me. Even if we only get a CB or a LB , its a 8.5/10 transfer window for me.

Another report said that he didn't ask to leave. I doubt Chelsea will sell Costa so soon. It will leave us with only Batshuayi and Remy.

If we sign Mustafi , Terry plays the libero imo. But ideally we should really buy a CB who can pass the ball well (Terry does this) , is strong and fast with a smart positional brain. It might be too much to ask tbh.

I'd be happy if we sign Mustafi. Anyway, do we really need that Libero if Fabregas plays so deep. If it was 3-5-2, it was a must. But don't see it as a must when its 4-4-2

I think €45m was the latest figure, no? It's a hard bargain, but the CB market is running thin & most of the good ones are locked down already. Especially those who have traits to fit in as a ball-playing one. He's 25, athletic, physically imposing & this is the gaping hole in your side.

I don't see why you shouldn't splash out here, Mustafi wouldn't be as a good a pairing for Terry/Zouma imo

He's more of a backup along with Rugani, they need the depth since Caceres left. I don't think Allegri would be putting all his eggs in that Benatia basket since he's pretty injury-prone. Plus they'll be rotating quite a bit anyway now.

It's a choice between Hazard or Costa. Prefer Costa as he had a free summer and Hazard's potential will be limited in a 424

I think they will be around 24M togheter, but i may be wrong.

If you checkout my template that i use each season you will see that 29.5 mil can be spent on strikers and still leave enough for a decent spread

There should be a third striker available for around 5.5 If it turns out they cost more than 24m together then it may be a struggle

I think 25m is more likely. But we'll know soon enough.

In any case, it depends on the overall price structure they create, not just those 2 players.

My guess is 24 mil. It is one or 2 of them in the majority of sides. The ..1, .2 or .3 increase/decrease the following GW which is in real terms a .5 move for the punt so early on IMO. Agree?

      I think you can.

But the real issue is when the 8.0-9.5 strikers go wild, and you'll realize that your 3rd striker is a Gray or Wilson and you'll be pressed to get rid one of your biggie and that's a forced headache.

Fwiw Chelsea don't have anywhere near the right players to use it IMO and will likely go 4-2-4, another conte favourite.

    Kane + Mkhi
    or
    Ibra + Cout

I suspect that most people will go for Kane and Mkhi so let me just add that Liverpool have no European football so will be fully focused and fit for prem games, Sturridge is fit (for now!) so some of Cout's chances created may actually get put away for a change and they've had effectively a 9 month pre-season under Klopp.
Also with MU not in the CL I highly doubt Ibra will be wasted in the Europa, keeping him fresh for the prem. Plus with Tot in the CL and the signing of Janssen, I don't think we'll see Kane complete 90 mins as frequently as in previous seasons. Any games where Spurs are ahead with 20 mins to go I can see Poch subbing him off for Janssen to keep him fresh for the CL thereby limitting his chances for braces.

Food for thought before making a decision.
