Earlier this month, West Brom made QPR winger Matt Phillips their first summer signing, with the Scotland international joining the Baggies for an undisclosed fee, believed to be around £6 million. Phillips has penned a four-year contract at the Hawthorns.

Speaking to the club’s official website about what supporters can expect from him, Phillips is looking to make an immediate impact in the final third:

“My game is about pace and power and strength, looking to take people on, getting shots off and getting crosses in. Assists and goals – that’s what I will be counting on. I want to get my place in the starting XI and build from there. But I’m not the finished article by any means. I’m 25 and I still feel I can bring more to my game.”

The History

Born in Aylesbury, Phillips joined Wycombe Wanderers as an eight-year-old, and progressed all the way through to the first-team, making his professional debut at the age of 17 as a substitute in a 1-0 defeat to Notts County in April 2008.

In total, Phillips made 84 appearances for the Chairboys, scoring eight goals and registering six assists, before moving to then Premier League outfit Blackpool in August 2010 in a deal rising to £700,000.

He was quick to settle for the Seasiders, scoring on his Premier League debut as a late substitute in a 2-1 defeat to Blackburn Rovers. The Scotland international went on to make 27 appearances in the top flight in 2010/11, scoring twice and providing three assists.

Blackpool only lasted one year at the top table of English football, though, and while Phillips was linked with moves to other Premier League sides, he spent two more seasons with the club and, aside from a short loan spell at Sheffield United in 2011, produced 28 goals and 12 assists over 87 matches in all competitions.

Phillips finally moved on in the summer of 2013, joining QPR for a reported fee of £5 million. He played 22 matches for the Hoops in 2013/14, bagging three goals and two assists as they gained promotion back to the top flight. The following season was more impressive for Phillips given the step up in class, scoring three goals and laying on eight assists in 25 Premier League matches. QPR again suffered relegation back to the Championship, though, with Phillips showing flashes of his abilities last term, producing eight goals and five assists in 44 league appearances.

Despite representing England at Under 19 and Under 20 levels, Phillips chose to represent Scotland at international level due to his eligibility through his grandparents. He made his debut in a 5-1 defeat to USA in May 2012, but has only made three further appearances for his country.

The Prospects

Bearing in mind that the Baggies scored just 34 times last term – a tally better only than relegated Aston Villa (27) – the need for more firepower in the final third is apparent. Indeed, with the Baggies ranked bottom for shots on target and second-bottom for total attempts, Tony Pulis will be hoping the addition of Phillips should help improve Albion’s cutting edge.

The 25-year-old has been utilised on the right wing in both pre-season friendlies so far, although recent comments from the club’s technical director Nick Hammond indicate he could also be utilised up top are worth keeping an eye on, particularly if Saido Berahino is sold before the end of the transfer window.

Phillips should bring a much-needed pace to West Brom’s attack and is likely to be competing against the likes of James Morrison, Jonathan Leko, Craig Gardner and Callum McManaman for a starting berth, with Pulis generally favouring a 4-2-3-1 or 4-5-1 formation last season. James McClean looks the obvious candidate to start on the left wing, although most of Albion’s wide men have the ability to play on either flank.

During the 2014/15 season Phillips spent with QPR in the Premier League, he averaged a shot every 45.8 minutes, which was only bettered by McManaman (40.1) among Baggies midfielders last term. In terms of creativity, Phillips averaged a key pass every 53.6 minutes, which was again second only to McManaman (34.5) last term, though it’s worth noting the latter only made 12 appearances last season, slightly skewing his statistics.

Phillips has been priced at 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) this time around, potentially offering us a viable option from the West Brom midfield that was absent for so much of last season.

Looking at Albion’s opening fixtures (cpl, EVE, MID, bou, WHM), there may certainly be a temptation among FPL bosses to consider a Baggies attacker in their initial drafts, with no matches against last season’s top five and three home fixtures over the opening five Gameweeks.

Nonetheless, history suggests that owning an attacker from a Pulis side has never proved to be a particularly successful strategy for Fantasy managers, and given the number of options available in the same price bracket in midfield, it’ll take some eye-catching performances from Phillips during pre-season to force a change in outlook.

    Mhiky AND Martial anyone?

WIth Mourinho as manager and Ibra and Pogba in, its hard to see Utd not being pretty brutal next season. They have good early fixtures, and if the wort comes to the worst, you can always sell the worst performing one for another premium mid who is firing.

Brutal players, but they'll need to gel first. I think we can't expect them to work perfectly good immediately. Once they gel, why not?

I'm considering both. Mhki is so highly rated on here and since martial got changed to a mid, that is very exciting.
As long as both are nailed and playing on opposite flanks, they are equals in my eyes, rather than taking 1 and Ibra, I'm considering just taking both

Can't see myself having both. Especially with the amount of good midfielders available.. which brings me onto my dilemma: Mkhitaryan OR Martial? I'm edging towards Martial. 60/40.

His statistics are still pretty good, could be like Ramsey in 13/14. My 9.0m criteria was based on the fact he'd be a cheaper way into United's midfield than Martial/Micky.

Yeah, I don't think he's worth the double up, especially at the beginning of the season, when you gotta spread the risk.
The stats you presented earlier did have an effect on me though. If he comes in cheaper than Martial/Mkhitaryan, I might be persuaded 🙂

Opinions on a fixture ticker. 4 classifications - Excellent, good, poor, awful (fixture type).

Arsenal away games vs Watford, Hull, Sunderland Burnley - would you class them as good or excellent?

For me they'd be good fixtures and then the reverse where Arsenal are at home would be excellent.

This is sort of what I'm building towards - https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1bnZDtHPIHTwEMO5Zm9Q5QDfrhc-NfjCnRu1HF7yq45M/edit?usp=sharing

I guess the actual choice is all personal opinion anyway

I like to work off a 5 point system, generally I rate home fixtures as 1 better than away.

Yeah, its a really useful way of sorting out defensive rotations. I tend to split it down into
          5. games where I think a clean sheet is very likely and I really want to play a defender
4.games where a clean sheet is a good possibility
          3. games where I'd play a defender if necessary but wouldn't expect anyting
          2. games where I'm almost certain there'll be no clean sheet
          1. games where I expect a tonking and would actively avoid paying a defender

Yeah, I collected the FPL ratings into a table: http://i.imgur.com/AsYWZcL.jpg

There's a fair amount I disagree with though. It'll be interesting to see if they continually update it...but in any case, like Andy says, it would be better to have separate sheets for defenders / attackers.

My wife showed my how. But Balders is the expert. I only went for 3 colours as I like things simple. The one problem I had was asking it to recognise the difference between names in caps and lower case. Google docs seems to see them all as one. I think it woks fine as is for defensive rotations anyway.

This is my ticker if it helps

Mandanda/ Hennesey for Crystal Palace or Foster for West Brom?
Also, who is the player on the cover of the "budget defenders" article?

So many good, cheap players to choose from!
Ayew, Bojan, Matty Phillips, Mirallas, Berahino at Stoke, Benteke at Palace, Siggy, Feghouli.. The list goes on! Who are you opting for out of these lot and why?

will Antonio not play wing back again though?

was Feg bought to come straight in or as a squad player. I don't know much about him.

          Siggy most proven consistently.

Ayew, potentially playing up top this season.

Double up on Swans? No thanks.

Berahino at Stoke being guaranteed a start would be lovely, ditto for Benteke at Palace (though I'm leaning Townsend, I don't know why).

Bojan and Mirallas a little hot and cold for me, too injury prone with knocks to boot.

The clampdown on protesting and swearing at refs could mean 9 v 9 initially but they will soon get the message. Long overdue,..

So who to avoid as a risk? As a lip reader I can confirm that Rooney Is one of the worst offenders 😉

He's a bit different though, he kind of acts to be pissed off to make an impression he didn't do anything wrong when he messed up. Costa, Rooney and Vardy, these guys really believe the ref is always wrong.

who do we think looks the best Spurs midfielder?

          Can Alli replicate last season?

Is Eriksen gonna crack on from last season?

Lamela at 7mil seems a steal but not sure on his output/minutes.

Then you have Chadli and Son, both could do serious damage but surely will have limited gametime again?

Even Wanyama and Dier can pop up with a goal!

Utd trying to make up for the mistake of selling him.

Didn't Fergie play Rafael or Fabio in CM over Pogba in one game and that was one of the things that make him want to leave? Gas!

Think Fergie grew tired of his demands as an 18yr old. Probably had a point being so talented but you know Fergie. Symptomatic of so many youngsters who've followed suit with that behaviour

                "You know Fergie?"

not sure what you mean, he had a knack for bringing youngsters through, I mean part of the Utd dominance in the 90s was from a crop of youngsters.

I think he grew ignorant as time went on and stopped looking to the future, can't deny he was one of the best managers but he left the club in a bad way (not all his fault) and playing Fabio or Rafael (sorry can't remember which one it was) OOP over the emerging talent of Pogba was an example of his later attitude.

Help with this very bold team please...

              Valdes Mandanda
              Shaw Francis/Pieters Brunt/Keane
              Martial Mhki Firmino Tadic Townsend
              Costa Batshuayi Gray
              (100m exact)

              I'm concerned Brunt isn't nailed?
And can't decide between Gray or Wilson?

Don't fancy double Chelsea forwards, no city players is dangerous

Brunt is nailed and plays in midfield.

                is Gray bench fodder?

So he will definitely play in midfield even with Phillips signing etc? And he gets defender points?! I love him.
I was actually thinking of benching bat until he plays

                Wilson>Gray
                Heaton>Valdes
                Evans>Brunt
                Antonio>Martial

                Good team though

I agree, best to wait and see on Antonio. But for 9.5m Payet is your man!

I'm just concerned about no city player

Brunt is probably nailed on if fit.

I'd be wary of doubling up on Chelsea strikers, it's hard to know if Batshuayi is going to hit the ground running. Maybe Lukaku is a safer option at 9m, also has a good run of fixtures out of the gate.

Gray and Wilson are both good choices. Personally I'm going with Shane Long if Southampton don't buy another striker.

Pretty sure Brunt is nailed. I'm no Brom fan mind.

I'd go Wilson personally. Bournemouth a year under the belts in the prem. Wilson looked good before the injury.

Worth looking at Sakho, Berahino if they get moves too.

I think this team has a nice balance.

              Foster / Heaton
              Shaw Azpi Funes Friend Souare
              Siggy Firmino Townsend Willian 4.5
              Aguero Ibrahimovic Gray

                Souare and townsend?
midfield seems like it is lacking but decent nonetheless given the firepower upfront

                Motion won't start
Firmino bad fixtures but not many other good mid at that price

I am thinking of selecting Silva over KDB, what are your views?

Also, as he will likely play on the left, has he had any very good seasons on the left or were they all at cam?
