Earlier this month, West Brom made QPR winger Matt Phillips their first summer signing, with the Scotland international joining the Baggies for an undisclosed fee, believed to be around £6 million. Phillips has penned a four-year contract at the Hawthorns.

Speaking to the club’s official website about what supporters can expect from him, Phillips is looking to make an immediate impact in the final third:

“My game is about pace and power and strength, looking to take people on, getting shots off and getting crosses in. Assists and goals – that’s what I will be counting on. I want to get my place in the starting XI and build from there. But I’m not the finished article by any means. I’m 25 and I still feel I can bring more to my game.”

The History

Born in Aylesbury, Phillips joined Wycombe Wanderers as an eight-year-old, and progressed all the way through to the first-team, making his professional debut at the age of 17 as a substitute in a 1-0 defeat to Notts County in April 2008.

In total, Phillips made 84 appearances for the Chairboys, scoring eight goals and registering six assists, before moving to then Premier League outfit Blackpool in August 2010 in a deal rising to £700,000.

He was quick to settle for the Seasiders, scoring on his Premier League debut as a late substitute in a 2-1 defeat to Blackburn Rovers. The Scotland international went on to make 27 appearances in the top flight in 2010/11, scoring twice and providing three assists.

Blackpool only lasted one year at the top table of English football, though, and while Phillips was linked with moves to other Premier League sides, he spent two more seasons with the club and, aside from a short loan spell at Sheffield United in 2011, produced 28 goals and 12 assists over 87 matches in all competitions.

Phillips finally moved on in the summer of 2013, joining QPR for a reported fee of £5 million. He played 22 matches for the Hoops in 2013/14, bagging three goals and two assists as they gained promotion back to the top flight. The following season was more impressive for Phillips given the step up in class, scoring three goals and laying on eight assists in 25 Premier League matches. QPR again suffered relegation back to the Championship, though, with Phillips showing flashes of his abilities last term, producing eight goals and five assists in 44 league appearances.

Despite representing England at Under 19 and Under 20 levels, Phillips chose to represent Scotland at international level due to his eligibility through his grandparents. He made his debut in a 5-1 defeat to USA in May 2012, but has only made three further appearances for his country.

The Prospects

Bearing in mind that the Baggies scored just 34 times last term – a tally better only than relegated Aston Villa (27) – the need for more firepower in the final third is apparent. Indeed, with the Baggies ranked bottom for shots on target and second-bottom for total attempts, Tony Pulis will be hoping the addition of Phillips should help improve Albion’s cutting edge.

The 25-year-old has been utilised on the right wing in both pre-season friendlies so far, although recent comments from the club’s technical director Nick Hammond indicate he could also be utilised up top are worth keeping an eye on, particularly if Saido Berahino is sold before the end of the transfer window.

Phillips should bring a much-needed pace to West Brom’s attack and is likely to be competing against the likes of James Morrison, Jonathan Leko, Craig Gardner and Callum McManaman for a starting berth, with Pulis generally favouring a 4-2-3-1 or 4-5-1 formation last season. James McClean looks the obvious candidate to start on the left wing, although most of Albion’s wide men have the ability to play on either flank.

During the 2014/15 season Phillips spent with QPR in the Premier League, he averaged a shot every 45.8 minutes, which was only bettered by McManaman (40.1) among Baggies midfielders last term. In terms of creativity, Phillips averaged a key pass every 53.6 minutes, which was again second only to McManaman (34.5) last term, though it’s worth noting the latter only made 12 appearances last season, slightly skewing his statistics.

Phillips has been priced at 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) this time around, potentially offering us a viable option from the West Brom midfield that was absent for so much of last season.

Looking at Albion’s opening fixtures (cpl, EVE, MID, bou, WHM), there may certainly be a temptation among FPL bosses to consider a Baggies attacker in their initial drafts, with no matches against last season’s top five and three home fixtures over the opening five Gameweeks.

Nonetheless, history suggests that owning an attacker from a Pulis side has never proved to be a particularly successful strategy for Fantasy managers, and given the number of options available in the same price bracket in midfield, it’ll take some eye-catching performances from Phillips during pre-season to force a change in outlook.

Hey guys, everyone must be busy preparing their draft teams. Just a quick question, what's the consensus on GKs selection? Two nailed on 4.5s or one premium and a 4.0?

    Thanks!

      Vanakkam anne!!

there's no consensus on these things. even a 5.5 + 4.0 could work out for you. It depends on your deffenders and how you want to spread your choices

Hahah vanakkam! That's true, I'm leaning towards having a premium keeper, e.g. DeGea or Cech for reliability and to avoid any selection woes!

Reckon Funes Mori won't start if Stones stays at Everton. I'm keeping an eye on Deulofeu as reckon Koeman will play him more than Martinez did but won't be in from start. In general, I think the midfield needs strengthened, starting with Feghouli or Philips.

To free more cash you could also do Dawson > Evans and Ayala > Friend. The 1.0 would help you with midfield.

Maybe striking a balance between steady fantasy picks and a few maverick ones is the way to go.

Unless you're happy to use your wildcard early if the gamble doesn't pay off. Although you can benefit by catching price rises early by getting the form players in.

Ok, I tried to not do it, but I can't resist. Let's hear it....

    Heaton - Foster
Shaw - Funes Mori - Ayala - Taylor - Koné
    Martial - Firmino - Sigurdsson - Townsend - Feghouli
    Aguero - Costa - Austin

Cheers mate. Yeah, there are a few starting line-ups that need clarifying before the season starts.

I reckon Shaw is nailed though. Martial too, surely. Firmino hmmm... should be, but we do have a lot of options up front now.

It's a starting point at least. to be honest, if Benteke ends up somewhere like West Ham or Palace, I'll be downgrading Costa and spending those funds elsewhere

That was my thinking too. You can get caught out on GW1 with a few surprise benchings.

Also at 5.5, you're much more mobile if a Mahrez rears his head.

    Foster, Heaton

Definitely not straight away, my first inclination is that he'll be paired up with Xhaka with Caz having the license to have more influence in the final third akin to last season. Unless Özil's injured, I can't see an immediate scenario where Caz is slotted in the hole where he had a great spell two seasons ago.

For that reason, I'd rather any of Sánchez, Özil or Ramsey who'll reliably dance around in the box more, put more passes in the danger-zone, & notch ore shots in the box.

I would think Gradel will be on more set pieces. Further Ibe might not even be nailed (competition with Stanislas)....

Gradel was injured through last season but in he was very good in 14/15 and even had 1 goal 6 assists in 890 minutes in 15/16

In 14/15 , he had 4 assists and SEVENTEEN (yes 17) goals in 2200 minutes playing in Ligue 1

    Jakupovic/ Pieters - Hojbjerg - Paredez

I can do Pieters to 5,0M def and Townsend to Bolasie and I would go to my previous draft. 🙂

Any chance to quick RMT guys? Thanks, cheers. 🙂

very similar to what I have managed (below).. but I prefer Erkisen over Mahrez.. those early fixtures mean you definitely need some Spurs cover up front

Thanks mate, first game for Mahrez (depleted Hull) is very tempting. He can easily explode there, I'll be monitoring games of course and decide afterwards. Trying to see how Spurs do without Dembele and Kane did look tired on EURO so not expecting early explosions from him, wait and see there for me, but like I said, plenty of time to decide.

        Thanks for your input, cheers.

Just made my first draft of the season and ended up with £0.0 without even trying.

    DDG - 4.0
    Baines - Azpi - Dawson - Souare - Parades
    Hazard - Payet - Gradel - Downing - 4.5
    Aguero - Kane - Wilson

There is no chance this team is sticking but I thought it was just amazing that it cost exactly £100 just by chance

I'd try to get some ManU (mid, forw) cover and upgrade midfield. Quite expensive defense for my liking but you can't have everything.

      Otherwise, very original. 😉

If i look at your attack, you probably will not play 3 up front, so you need at least 4 good mids, and you have 2, maybe 3, if Gradel starts good. And maybe not even that, since Payet will probably be tired and may not even be nailed on for the first few GW. So i think you need at least another strong mid, that is nailed on and you will have no problems with rotation. There are a few cheap ones there: Townsend, Lamela, Bolasie,...

Though I'm fairly happy with my first draft, but couple of queries/concerns because I only have 0.0 ITB:

    1) Ideally I would like to keep at least 1.0 to buy any emerging FPL stars after first couple of GWs. What are my options to cut? I can think of Walker --> Funes Mori but really keen on Spurs defence!

    2) How does Rhodes (6.0) compare to the likes of Gray / Wilson / Long / Deeney (all 6.5)?

    Valdes / Jaku

    Shaw / Walker / Friend / Evans / Souare

    Hazard / Eriksen / Mkhi / Townsend / Fletcher

    Kun / Lukaku / Rhodes

I like the team so for 1) don't worry about downgrading and 2) with Negredo signing, Rhodes is not nailed.

        good point on Rhodes..

So to upgrade Rhodes, would you do Townsend to Bolasie? any other suggestions? thanks

I think Funes Mori & Rhodes are both at risk of not starting do I'd avoid both. With Walker, I'd be wary of occasional rotation with Trippier as they did last season though this is more likely when the Champions League starts. I'm not keen on Fletcher but other than that I really like your team.

"But I’m not the finished article by any means. I’m 25 and I still feel I can bring more to my game.”

In other words I'll end up a centre half for Pulis 🙁
