Earlier this month, West Brom made QPR winger Matt Phillips their first summer signing, with the Scotland international joining the Baggies for an undisclosed fee, believed to be around £6 million. Phillips has penned a four-year contract at the Hawthorns.

Speaking to the club’s official website about what supporters can expect from him, Phillips is looking to make an immediate impact in the final third:

“My game is about pace and power and strength, looking to take people on, getting shots off and getting crosses in. Assists and goals – that’s what I will be counting on. I want to get my place in the starting XI and build from there. But I’m not the finished article by any means. I’m 25 and I still feel I can bring more to my game.”

The History

Born in Aylesbury, Phillips joined Wycombe Wanderers as an eight-year-old, and progressed all the way through to the first-team, making his professional debut at the age of 17 as a substitute in a 1-0 defeat to Notts County in April 2008.

In total, Phillips made 84 appearances for the Chairboys, scoring eight goals and registering six assists, before moving to then Premier League outfit Blackpool in August 2010 in a deal rising to £700,000.

He was quick to settle for the Seasiders, scoring on his Premier League debut as a late substitute in a 2-1 defeat to Blackburn Rovers. The Scotland international went on to make 27 appearances in the top flight in 2010/11, scoring twice and providing three assists.

Blackpool only lasted one year at the top table of English football, though, and while Phillips was linked with moves to other Premier League sides, he spent two more seasons with the club and, aside from a short loan spell at Sheffield United in 2011, produced 28 goals and 12 assists over 87 matches in all competitions.

Phillips finally moved on in the summer of 2013, joining QPR for a reported fee of £5 million. He played 22 matches for the Hoops in 2013/14, bagging three goals and two assists as they gained promotion back to the top flight. The following season was more impressive for Phillips given the step up in class, scoring three goals and laying on eight assists in 25 Premier League matches. QPR again suffered relegation back to the Championship, though, with Phillips showing flashes of his abilities last term, producing eight goals and five assists in 44 league appearances.

Despite representing England at Under 19 and Under 20 levels, Phillips chose to represent Scotland at international level due to his eligibility through his grandparents. He made his debut in a 5-1 defeat to USA in May 2012, but has only made three further appearances for his country.

The Prospects

Bearing in mind that the Baggies scored just 34 times last term – a tally better only than relegated Aston Villa (27) – the need for more firepower in the final third is apparent. Indeed, with the Baggies ranked bottom for shots on target and second-bottom for total attempts, Tony Pulis will be hoping the addition of Phillips should help improve Albion’s cutting edge.

The 25-year-old has been utilised on the right wing in both pre-season friendlies so far, although recent comments from the club’s technical director Nick Hammond indicate he could also be utilised up top are worth keeping an eye on, particularly if Saido Berahino is sold before the end of the transfer window.

Phillips should bring a much-needed pace to West Brom’s attack and is likely to be competing against the likes of James Morrison, Jonathan Leko, Craig Gardner and Callum McManaman for a starting berth, with Pulis generally favouring a 4-2-3-1 or 4-5-1 formation last season. James McClean looks the obvious candidate to start on the left wing, although most of Albion’s wide men have the ability to play on either flank.

During the 2014/15 season Phillips spent with QPR in the Premier League, he averaged a shot every 45.8 minutes, which was only bettered by McManaman (40.1) among Baggies midfielders last term. In terms of creativity, Phillips averaged a key pass every 53.6 minutes, which was again second only to McManaman (34.5) last term, though it’s worth noting the latter only made 12 appearances last season, slightly skewing his statistics.

Phillips has been priced at 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) this time around, potentially offering us a viable option from the West Brom midfield that was absent for so much of last season.

Looking at Albion’s opening fixtures (cpl, EVE, MID, bou, WHM), there may certainly be a temptation among FPL bosses to consider a Baggies attacker in their initial drafts, with no matches against last season’s top five and three home fixtures over the opening five Gameweeks.

Nonetheless, history suggests that owning an attacker from a Pulis side has never proved to be a particularly successful strategy for Fantasy managers, and given the number of options available in the same price bracket in midfield, it’ll take some eye-catching performances from Phillips during pre-season to force a change in outlook.

Anyone else think Pogba is hugely overrated?

Sure, he is a decent passer, good in the air and strong on the ball, but all I see when I watch him are his needless 'highlights-reel' touches, losing the ball too often, his poor temperament and going missing for large portions of matches.

I know money is of almost no object to Man Utd, but I just feel they could invest a lot better than in Pogba.

"losing the ball too often, his poor temperament and going missing for large portions of matches."

You think KDB is overrated too? I don't. Losing the ball, poor temperament etc. is partly due to his young age. He will only improve with time imo

Most clubs could buy a top 6 placed team in the Premier League with that money. He's a terrific player, not going to be great from a fantasy perspective I don't think ... but no idea why you'd spend that much money on one player.

He is exactly what Mou likes/wants. He plays 2 deffensive mids, and needs one of them to be able to pass the ball, bring the ball forward,... and still be very strong deffensive player. He was born to play in Mou's system. 🙂

the problem is, he's not a great DMC, more of a central midfielder. Don't think he'd be a good fit as one of the defensive midfielders there

I think he's a great talent but don't know where he'd fit in. He probably won't score enough to be an attacking midfielder but also he isn't a proper DM either.

To be honest, i see him as a great player. Do not think he is overrated (Not talking about the transfer fee, but hype around the player everyone is overpriced i think) He pulls 2 players on him in the midfield alone and frees a lot of space for other players to be successful, he has done a great job at Juve and played a vital role when Vidal left. Sure, he loses the ball, but whats a few lost balls compared to the other things he brings to the table?

I really think he has the potential to tbe he best midfielder of his type in the world, very close to it. For me, Modric is the best tho. Not the same style, but just my preference.

at least he is still young, he could grow into a great player. These will be crucial tests for him - dominating the midfield in a new league, and bringing more to the France team.

Yes, the service is more limited.

But, on the flip side does that "guarantee" him minutes, and also mean he will "step up".

He's favoured over Walcott and Ox isn't he?

Ox should come back to the saints. He'd def be in midfield then.

I'd say, considering his season last year, he'll be favoured on the right to begin with. I honestly don't know where Walcott and Oxlade sit in Wenger's plans anymore, but I'd love to see them at a different club this year ... they'd be guaranteed starts and would rip it up!

He was used as a fill-in when Wenger was rotating his squad to keep them fresh ... turned out the kid could play and he was influential in them going on a streak so was left to start for about 6 GWs. He's classy, a bit raw and needs some better end product ... but honestly think he's the best option on the right for Arsenal at the moment.

Somthing doesn't feel right. You won't get two playing defenders at 4.0 to begin with.

If you have Fletcher, you must be playing 3 forwards every week and I reckon you'd want someone better than Hernandez.

Perhaps KDB > Payet / Siggy / Fabregas and then upgrade both defenders to 4.5 and Hernandez to Long / Wilson / Austin

Oh yeah I'm looking at him more as a CM than where he's usually been deployed for Newcastle (and France).

His physique and general attributes suit that role way more. Wij is the kind of player you'd expect to see in an Arsenal double pivot - weak and pretty easy to play through!

you judge Sissoko on 2 games at the Euros and Wijnaldum on 1 season at a dysfunctional Newcastle. Sissoko was worse than Wijnaldum at Newcastle last season, and is far the inferior player. If you watch any of Wijnaldum from prior to last season you'd see a different player, not that he was that bad last season actually.

No, actually I don't. Judged both on how I've seen them play in the PL. Wij's career beforehand in lesser leagues means little to me

he's certainly not worse than Lallana. People seem to be raving about him for some reason. He has above average last year, but they still finished 8th. He was ok at the Euros, but didn't really impose himself on games. Wijnaldum has been part of a team that got to the world cup semi finals.

      4-2-3-1

As I've said above he'll play a CDM role with a license to play box to box and move forward. I think he'll be playing a similar role to that of Yaya at City. He's at the heart of the midfield but as they progress up the pitch he'll move forward and end up getting touches around the top of the box. Could snag a few assists and jam a few long-range goals but won't be playing as attacking as someone like Rooney or Mkhi.

maybe the Euros is too fresh in the mind. He was embarrassingly awful there. Anyway there is no disgrace at retiring early or dropping down a level. He's had a great career and started very early. Just look at the likes of Owen and Kluivert, sometimes players just stop becoming useful earlier than expected.

That might be the case, but i think Rooney played first two games pretty decent. Other than that he was atrocious, but so was most of the team.
I do believe that he will be good in this setup, there are players around him who compensate for a lot of things and complement each other. I genuinely think if other teams dont bolster their roster significantly, they should be the top dog for the title by 10 points.

What are people's thoughts on Eriksen this season? Obviously on set pieces, but likely to share/avoid points with Alli and Kane knocking around? He's always been there or there abouts, just isn't consistent enough.

Remember he was a BAPs whore last season though.

He'll be much the same again, he's class and a pivotal part of Spurs attacking formation. He'll get the assists and will snag a few goals from set pieces but has lost a bit of his appeal to Alli who gets in the box more. Good for that price though, and Spurs will be up and about early i expect.

    Mandanda / Jaku
    Baines / Shaw / Williams / Friend / Souare

Keep an eye on the Costa situation with major reports coming from Belgium about a Lukaku bid.

Yeah it looks possible that Costa will head back to Athletico and Lukaku back to Chelsea ... which would be fantasy gold but leave Everton in the muck!

    Current mids:

Shaqiri | Alli | De Bruyn | Gradel | leko.

Is Alli worth the price tag? Thinking of downgrading him to get a more balanced squad. He is the only spurs cover I have

Initially yes but I will look towards Dembele when he returns.

Costa to Batsh and Wimmer to Walker. McAuley worth considering, even if you have Foster...hopefully nailed on.

I think Conte seems very eager to hold onto Costa,I'm positive that he will stay.
He seems to be the best value among forwards this year.

There are reports that Flanagan is going on loan to Middlesbrough - is that a that to Friend? Where does he normally play for Boro?

So what you guys think of this "first setup":

    Foster | Jakupovic
    Friend | Shaw | Souaré | McAuley | Walker
Barry | Mkhitar | Kanté | Fletcher | Yaya Touré
    Kane | Ibrahimovic | Agüero

    Let me know thoughts please

      That midfield hurts my eyes!

      Honestly, that midfield is dreadful.

The defence is very nice, as is the attack, obviously.

I see you've gone top heavy so funds are limited in the middle. If you plan to keep those strikers, can still juggle funds a little to improve there - ditch Yaya, Barry, Kante and bring in some other 5.5-6.5s.

On the whole, I'd downgrade Kane or Ibra and spread cash in midfield.

I wouldnt want that team if it was 5 mil cheaper. That Midfield as others have said is absolutely abysmal.

any thoughts on my first draft?

    Foster
    Williams – PVA – Souare
    Mkhitaryan – Townsend – Alli – Payet
    Costa – Aguero – Wilson

    Jaku/Friend/Robertson/Surman

Cool. But not having a single defeneder from ManU, Chelsea, Man City or even Tottenham is a big risk. All these new managers play solid defensive football and may score a lot of CS. Can a strong front line compensate? Maybe, but very risky.

A little bit light up top for me. It looks like you're rotating mids and forwards which I'm not a fan of.

    Good morning!

When looking to build your team right now. How far along a fixture ticker are you looking? First 4 GWs? 10? Up until first wildcard period is over?

3 GW's tops. Not even bothering with defensive rotations.

I am looking maybe at first 5, but not set. Will most likely do WC early to get more value in the team if some bandwagon appears.
