Welcome to the first in our series of Rate My Team Surgeries. These articles will look at initial Fantasy Premier League squads and will be published ahead of Gameweek 1, with one of the FFScout moderator and contributor team putting forward their selection for scrutiny in order to start discussion.

The aim is to highlight some of the key concerns we have faced in constructing their squads, which hopefully will chime with other FPL managers’ issues.

In addition, we want the comment section to provide a useful opportunity for you to submit your own RMTs. Please also be helpful to those asking for advice. The key to successful rating of teams is to give advice as well.

I have drawn the first straw to start off this series with my fixture-led initial FPL squad.

My Team

Heaton (BUR) Foster (WBA)

Shaw (MUN) Walker (TOT) Friend (MID) Francis (BOU) Robertson (HUL)

Mkhitaryan (MUN) Ayew (SWA) Tadic (SOU) Townsend (CPL) Capoue (WAT)

Gray (BUR) Aguero (MCI) Ibrahimovic (MUN)

Team cost £100m

Key Issues

Fixtures
The fixture schedule has been my guide in the absence of any form at the start of the season. A strong set of early fixtures for West Brom (cpl, EVE, MID, bou, WHM, sto) makes a defender or keeper a must for me. Ben Foster gets the nod due to his 4.5m price tag.

Middlesbrough have a strong early run too (STO, sun, wba, CPL, eve) which makes George Friend a good bet. Nailed on and with impressive underlying statistics last season, which FPL’s Bonus Point System favours.

Manchester United are another with good early fixtures (bou, SOT, hul, MCI, wat) and I’ve gone to town on their players with three lining up in my initial squad. Luke Shaw looks good value at 5.5 after an injury-hit 2015/16. Zlatan Ibrahimovic would be tricky to draft in at 11.5 if I didn’t have him immediately, whilst Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s 9.5 price and early pre-season form have also guided my thinking.

Questions: Am I relying too much on fixtures? Is tripling up on Manchester United too much? Am I foolish for ignoring Chelsea’s excellent early fixtures?

Value
My goalkeeper combination is all about value. Two nailed on stoppers, with a great track record of saves, all for 9m. That looks too good to turn down. Also their fixtures dovetail nicely early on for rotation.

I’ve also gone for players I think will outperform their price tag. Kyle Walker at 5.5, when his team-mate Danny Rose is 6m, looks a steal. Attacking points and clean sheets should follow especially with a strong early start (eve, CPL, LIV, sto, SUN, mid).

Dusan Tadic and Andre Ayew also look well priced considering the attacking role they play for their teams.

I’ve also ensured I can afford the likes of Sergio Aguero by opting for budget bench players. Etienne Capoue (4.5) will rarely play for me, but I’m happy to call on him particularly as he appears to have license to bomb forward under Watford’s new manager, Walter Mazzarri – already in pre-season, he has scored twice.

Hull’s Andrew Robertson is nailed on, and due to poor fixtures is likely to be benched each week. He could do well, though, if called upon. Likewise, Simon Francis may not have good fixtures but is a player I’m happy to rely on when needed.

Questions: Have I selected the best 7.5 midfielders? Have I got the right 4.5 defenders in place? Are there any 4.0 defenders I should consider?

Flexibility
This is key for me and has meant I’ve gone for players that are not necessarily my preferred picks in each position, but allow me to downgrade if required.

For example Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino is a player I like, particularly for 8.5, instead of Mkhitaryan, but it is far easier for me to downgrade from the Manchester United midfielder to Firmino than vice versa. Ideally I’d have the more expensive Eden Hazard in my team for even greater flexibility, but I struggled to find the extra 0.5 needed.

Burnley’s Andre Gray is not ideal. He faces Swansea in Gameweek 1 but fixtures are mixed afterwards, with Chelsea and Leicester away over the first six. At 6.5, though, I can easily swap him to cheaper options or the wealth of forwards at the same price, most notably Saido Berahino should he move from West Brom. Opting for Jordan Rhodes (6.0) makes it tough to upgrade, for example, particularly with Alvaro Negredo now on board at Middlesbrough.

Questions: Am I being too sensible here? Should I just go for the best players that I can afford regardless of whether I can change them for emerging stars?

Captains
Finally I have invested heavily in ensuring I have two great options in Ibrahimovic and Aguero, who alternate perfectly home and away. Both can easily be downgraded as well for other expensive players, such as Chelsea’s strikers. Getting them in if they are not in my initial squad may require wildcarding.

Questions: Can I rely on just two players for the armband? Should I be looking for a third premium option from among Arsenal, or Chelsea’s ranks?

      team 1
you may find that mandanda is no 1 now, and myhill isn't no1 either. so no keepers
defence is ok. rotates, and leicester may carry on as they did last year since they've replaced kante with mendy, whose supposed to be pretty decent.
payet may not play in gw1. kante's a defensive mid, he won't get so many chances for chelsea. overall your mid isn't great
      forwards good

      overall 4/10

      team 2
if you've got ddg then get a 4.0 backup
i wouldn't go for moreno, and overall too much spent in defence
i'd avoid snoddy as hull are in freefall atm, payet at before
deeney is overpriced and watfor have a poor start to the season.

      overall 4/10

      keepers ok
gabriel may not start, terry may be a good pick
the ox should go for a 4.5 mid and upgrade carroll - maybe save a bit in defence as well to boost the replacement
rhodes not an assured starter now negredo is in the team

      5/10

Posted a team earlier, but I've fiddled around a bit with it this afternoon, and I'm not sure which (if either) I should stick with:

    (A) Cech /Valdes
    Pieters / Friend / Williams / McAuley / Francis
    De Bruyne / Adomah/ Fabregas / Mkhitaryan/ Drinkwater
    Aguero / Lukaku / Gray

    (B) Cech /Valdes
    Pieters / Friend / Williams / Evans / Francis
    De Bruyne / Coutinho / Sigurdsson / Mkhitaryan/ Eriksen
    Vardy / Negredo / Gray

    Thanks for any help!

Ideally I'd switch Negredo for Gray in A, however I'd then have 4 players from Middlesbrough.

if you're going to compare similar teams, then highlight the changes in capitals

A's a decent shout, but you should go with your switch and do negredo for gray and switch valdes for a 4.0 preferably, or a different 4.5 if you really want 2 keepers

      6.5/.10

I'll make sure to next time, second time posting so I wasn't really sure what to do!

I'll leave it as A until the 10th or 11th then go back through everything, and keep a close eye on the rest of pre-season.

Cheers for the help (NB as well)

Be careful of Barkley's mixed fixtures and Koeman’s slightly defensive approach. I'd hold off on Ighalo for a while as he ran out od form towards the end of the last season. Improve on Mannone who may not start.

Thoughts/weaknesses in this please, much appreciated 🙂

    Foster  Jakupovic
    Shaw - Fuchs - Baines*  Paredes - Browning
De Bruyne - Mahrez - Fabregas - Sigurdsson  Fletcher
    Ibrahimovic - Costa - Austin**

*Vertonghen instead of Baines if he is fit, or Gabriel/Mertescaker if one is nailed
    **If nailed

    NB
Yes, I know I have no sub defenders. I can live with that.
I'm set on Fuchs, Shaw, Mahrez and Ibra.
Very unsure about Costa, De Bruyne, Fabregas.

    A) De Bruyne + Fabregas or B) Payet and Eriksen?

As you said Nugent really needs to go, Negredo is a punt as hes been below par the last few seasons but should be a starter a Boro.

To be honest apart from that its a solid team with a good balance and a few captian options.

I actually think that's a class midfield considering the strikers and even the defence, but yeah, it still needs to be upgraded. I'd maybe downgrade Zlatan rather than Costa and then try get Martial/Mkhi?

          • 10 Years
          9 years, 4 months ago

Can't resist Zlatan. Him and Kun rotate perfectly for captainicy. He may easily become the highest scoring FPL player this year. So that's Costa who I get rid of if I decide to strenghten my midfield. I could also upgrade defence or midfield with 0.5m left in the bank.

There will be place for Mkhitaryan/Martial if one of them proves to be a better FPL asset than Mahrez - same price tag. For now, I'll stick with the safe option. 🙂

Just dont like the idea of having 1 upfront.

I've tried those formations in previous season with limited success in my own leagues. One up top is the future, you saw it here first! 😀

        Cheers for the input though!

      Sadly its not great.

I doubt Nugent will play, Ozil and Sanchez could miss the start of the season.

But remember to do what you want 🙂

Shane Long - is he worth it?

Owned by 16.3% of FPL teams, but Long has never scored more than 10 goals in any Premier League season. He's also never played more than 2240 minutes in a season.

Does history tell us to avoid Long in favour of other 6.5 options? Austin/Gray/Wilson/Negredo etc?

For me I wouldn't say Long is worth it because he may not be a starter with Austin being there. Southampton also have some tricky games between every 1 or 2 games.
I personally like Rondon and Negredo due to their early fixtures, but it is hard to tell how Negredo will perform in this new season.

RMT please? Be as honest as you want, I will take any negative feedback.

    Mandanda (Foster)
Walker / Dann / Friend (Evans / Fernandez)
Hazard / Fabregas / Barkley / Eriksen (Capoue)
    Aguero / Lukaku / Rondon

Doubling up on Chelsea midfield is risky. Just go with one. I'd have a different 4.5 defender than Fernandez given his fixtures as well. Who is Mandanda?

Yeah, it would be good to take out one but not sure who to take out.

Mandanda is Crystal Palace's new signing. He used to play in the French League.

Thanks. I think he is there just as 5.5 allocation but if he is playing i think he is value. Might go courtouis and arsenal defender instead?

I personally only like azpi for Chelsea ATM, but obviously price is the issue. I'm just concerned about Terry longer term

    Rmt draft one:

    Hennessey (jaku)
    Morgan, Fernandez, Shaw(friend, souare)
    Tadic, fabregas, mkhit, siggy(Watson)
    Aguero, ibra, negredo

      Like it.

Negredo is a no for me though. Much prefer Grey or one of the saints.
Fabregas is also a no for mine until we see hoe Chelsea set up and settle.

I agree to some extent, I will keep an eye on fabregas, the negredo one is admittedly a move out of sheer excitement, much like my selection of ibra.

    Auger Gray Long

first thing is the GKs way too much money pick 1 and 4.0 for the other.
Sanga is not nailed neither is Souare
      Upgrade Long or Grey

At first glance, two premium keepers seems a waste. I'm also not keen at this stage on city fullbacks due to rotation and not knowing who pep is going to go with, though it probably is more than likely that Sagna will get the nod.

Maybe take some money out from the goalkeepers and defence to upgrade long to lukaku? Rest of the team looks nice.

    Hello peeps,

First time poster and new to the FPL scene 🙂

Basis research and my modest read of the game, and purely keeping in mind the first few game weeks, have put together the first draft of my team.

Of course, between now and 12th, with the transfer window picking up steam, the team could see a few changes ...

    Any and all comments, critiques

    ... would really be appreciated.

So, here goes, with a classic 4-4-2 formation, my first draft:

    Mandanda

    Walker - Williams - Shaw - Kolarov

    De Bruyne - Mkhitaryan (v) - Willian - Puncheon

    Aguero (C) - Gomis

    BENCH:

    Foster - Friend - Fischer - Carroll

    Left in bank?

Puncheon to Townsend and Gomis to just about anyone. And Kolarov to Azpi?

I would love to see the Fischer pick turn out

      Zero monies left.

Gomis for now is a placeholder given Swans' initial 2 fixtures and provided he's not jettisoned to Marseille ..

Between Puncheon and Townsend, went with former coz 0.5m cheaper plus also takes free kicks ...

Kolarov again because of opening fixture plus chances of an assist ... City should manage a clean sheet against the Black cats .. Could switch to Azpi later ... Chelsea have a tough opener against the Hammers

Any thoughts on this ? maybe some changes but basicly ,
    Jakupovich - Valdes
    Sagna-Fernandes-Soare-Stones(Walker)-Byram
    Townsend-Tadic-Ayew-Cuadrado-Downing
    Kaku-Ibra-Kun
    All appreciate
    thx.

Sagna is open to Rotation isn't he?
Getting some defense from United or Chelsea should be a good source of points.
Your strikers are awesome... but maybe a bit pricey?

Cuadrado not nailed on IMO ... Plus agree on the Sagna rotation comment .. May want to replace those two with a couple of supposed sure fire starters
