Having assessed the goalkeepers, budget defenders and mid-price defenders over the last few days, we continue our look at the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) player list with an analysis of the premium backline options.

For this group of 6.0 and 6.5 priced players, FPL managers deserve the very best.

These players should offer a strong chance of a clean sheet, be assured of starts and have a significant attacking threat. They should also impress FPL’s Bonus Point System (BPS), which favours those who are accurate with passing and crossing and who contribute plenty of clearances, blocks and interceptions (CBI).

With 172 FPL points accrued, Arsenal’s Hector Bellerin (6.5) was in sensational form last season and is now among the game’s highest priced rearguard options. Across a raft of statistics, including five assists and 18 clean sheets, Bellerin ranked top amongst defenders and, if he can improve on his haul of a single goal, he looks destined to once again be a regular source of points at both ends of the pitch.

Bellerin is currently the most popular defender in FPL and sits in just under 30% of squads.

Gunners centre back Laurent Koscielny (6.0) offers a cheaper alternative, with heightened bonus potential and goal threat. Last season the France international was in the top ten for defenders in terms of CBI and scored four times, though he is currently less popular than his Spanish team-mate having been selected by 17% of FPL managers to this point.

Nacho Monreal could be an overlooked option. Owned by under 7% of FPL managers, he matched Bellerin for starts (36 apiece) last term and comes in at 6.0 – he was almost on a par with his fellow full-back for shots (12 to 13) and bettered him for key passes (29 to 23). Monreal’s performances last season relegated Kieran Gibbs (5.0) to a cameo role and we’re anticipating that trend to continue this term.

A strong early fixture list, which contains away ties with Watford, Hull and Burnley in the first seven Gameweeks, certainly promotes the case to include an Arsenal heavyweight defender in your initial squad, though one of Per Mertesacker or Gabriel (both at 5.0) could provide value options here if either can nail down a starting role.

Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld keeps Bellerin company at the 6.5 price point and is currently second to the Gunners’ man in terms of ownership (25%).

With 166 FPL points, the Belgian was last season’s second-highest ranked defender, thanks to four goals from 40 goal attempts – only Sunderland’s Patrick Van Aanholt had more shots on goal from the back.

Alderweireld’s bonus point potential is also strong, particularly in terms of CBI, where he was 2015/16’s third best performer.

We should also expect clean sheets: no side conceded fewer goals than Spurs last season, with 13 shut outs accrued.

Danny Rose (6.0) offers a slightly cheaper alternative, but with fellow Spurs full back Kyle Walker priced 0.5 cheaper his appeal is greatly reduced this season. As mentioned previously, we’re also expecting Spurs to rotate at full-back around Champions League ties; it’s hoped that Alderweireld will be immune to that.

Under new Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho, Chris Smalling (6.0) has the potential to improve on 2015/16’s FPL point tally of 135.

He’s expected to remain a mainstay in central defence having been pivotal to the Red Devils achieving 18 clean sheets last season. Smalling was also among the top three defenders for winning aerial duels, and in the top five in terms of interceptions.

With Luke Shaw looking particularly appealing at 5.5, though, Smalling – who is suspended for the opener at Bournemouth – will have to improve his attacking output to convince he’s worth the extra outlay – he mustered just a single assist last season.

Chelsea’s backline have been handed reduced prices as a result of last season’s nine clean sheets.

Cesar Azpilicueta (6.0) has all the ingredients for success under new manager Antonio Conte. Last season he was second among defenders in terms of successful tackling as well as third for passes in the final third. If Conte opts for a 3-5-2 formation, Azpilicueta could be given even more license to attack and add to his tally of three assists and two goals.

So far in pre-season, though, Conte has preferred a back four, which could force a reassessment in his likely starters.

Both Branislav Ivanovic and Gary Cahill also set you back 6.0 and the Serbian, in particular, could be one to monitor if he can retain a starting berth and reprise the form that served up four goals and six assists in the Blues’ 2014/15 title-winning season.

Again, though, there are likely to be cheaper options, with Kurt Zouma (5.5) certainly one to consider when he returns to action in September.

Man City trio Vincent Kompany, Aleksandar Kolarov and Nicolas Otamendi are the remaining premium options for our five-man defences.

All three are priced at 6.0 apiece, though, arguably, Otamendi looks the safest bet at present. Although Kompany is believed to be winning his fitness race ahead of the new season, the Belgian’s abysmal injury record dents his appeal – despite sitting joint-top for points per match (5.4) at the back last year, he was restricted to just 14 appearances.

Kolarov, meanwhile, could drop behind Gael Clichy in the pecking order – a 78.7% pass accuracy last term was lower than any City defender, which hardly bodes well for his role in Pep Guardiola’s possession-based tactics.

Despite scoring just once in 2015/16, Otamendi’s tally of 21 efforts inside the penalty area was bettered by only four other defenders, highlighting his aerial threat in and around the box.

Much depends on Guardiola’s restructuring, though, given that John Stones continues to be heavily linked with a move to City. At a price of just 5.0, there’s no doubt that Stones would be heavily targeted by Fantasy managers should he roll up at the Etihad and offer a secure route into a defence that racked up 16 shut-outs in the previous campaign.

      1. Would prefer a Stoke/Watford defender over McAuley. Also, get NTaylor ahead of Fernandez, who is not nailed on with der Hoorn arriving.

      2. Improve your midfield. I guess you might have to sacrifice Ibrahimovic for that, but I'd prefer a Lamela to Mkhitaryan perhaps, and maybe get a budget 3rd striker.

Ben Watson actually made some pretty good numbers for a lowly budget mid. I wonder if he'll get time this season.

Hojbjbbejrg is a defensive mid, may be nailed on but at that point, you may as well get Capoue if all you need is bench fodder

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems to me all the 4.5 deffo starters are defensive midfielders with the exception of Darren Fletcher. He's hardly prolific, but his position tips the balance for me.

Same as every year (Lucas, Mikel, etc)

Darren Fletcher may as well be a defensive mid, if he's going to keep making those numbers.

I do not doubt his qualities at all, but I am extremely puzzled by Arsenal signing Xhaka.

Firstly, if it was Chelsea or City doing it, it was okay, but we are not really the team who make ''unnecessary'' signings. Let's look at our midfield - there's Coquelin, Cazorla, Ramsey and Elneny fighting for those two spots. Elneny, especially, has done a good job and shown himself to be better than his transfer fee suggested. A midfield axis of Coquelin/Ramsey or Coquelin/Cazorla or Elneny/Cazorla all seem very decent. Since I assume we are a team with a very fixed budget, shell £30m on a position which requires a player the least? Sure, Xhaka would be an Coquelin upgrade, but then I'd say we'd be better served with updating Giroud or Mertesacker or whoever plays RW (Walcott/Ox/Iwobi).

My arguments would be moot if we sign a good CB or a good ST, but I'm not expecting any.

Xhaka's a massive upgrade on Coquelin or if it allows Cazorla to move up in to the attacking 4 ahead of a Xhaka/Coq or Xhaka/Elneny midfield pairing then I'm huge on that. Cazorla's such a good creative player who got pushed back recently & I'd love to see him in a freer attacking role again.

Yeah, not the most required position, but he's a good upgrade on what we had before. Like when Oezil was signed. Not sure whats going to happen about upfront...hopefully sign someone, but probably gonna be Walcott... (c) anyone? 😀

Arsenal would have won the league last season if Wenger had signed a bonofied striker

    5. Phnom_Penh_Andy
      • 9 Years
      9 years, 4 months ago

I think it was an important signing. In defensive midfield they've just lost 2 players who were diminishing anyway - Arteta and Flamini. That just left young Coquelin, so I'd say he plugged a huge gap with Xhaka, there. He'll release Ramsey or Cazorla to get forward more often.

    6. Arteta
      • 10 Years
      9 years, 4 months ago

Wenger: “Xhaka brings his passing ability to play through the lines from deep positions, his work rate, and he’s good in the air. He’s a young boy as well, 23 years old. There’s a lot to come from him. We lost three midfielders: Flamini, Rosicky and Arteta, and numbers-wise we are quite solid in midfield now. Elneny had a big impact when he came here, Coquelin was injured for a long time and is back. Cazorla will come back, Wilshere is back… so we are solid in midfield.”

I think it's far away from an unnecessary signing. We've just lost 3 midfielders and Cazorla is turning 32 in December. To be honest I'd be angry if we wouldn't even try to replace them. Every year, literally every year we have injury crisis and then we wonder why couldn't Wenger spend the cash on someone. There will be injuries and there will be rotation. Competition for places is also important. In my eyes Xhaka is a young leader who can simply do the dirty work. His best asset is definitely his passing. What do I expect from him? Around 5 goals, 5 assists, a lot of interceptions, blocks and tackles. He should add some much needed steel to the team and his biggest problem could be yellow (maybe red) cards. I'm not trying to overrate him, I just think we bought us a quality player who will improve Arsenal.

      Boro
      Would include keeper klink.
Valdes friend McCauley Evans perhaps. The fact I won't hold WC past their boss fixtures makes it even more appealing

Lose Dier. No Aguero is the obvious omission.

Way to heavy in back, dont spend more than 9.5. Nyom has terrible fixs to start.Valencia makes no sense. At least get defoe--6.0, but really maybe Lukaku at 7.5.Just shave the defense Scmeichel>jaku(plays) saves 1.0. Down grade Dier he cant pu cs's anymore. Good Luck to you.

West Brom were quite poor defensively last season. Lukaku got 2 against them in the same fixture last year. Tottenham is obviously a good team...but Lukaku gets good returns. I think at 9.0 he's a steal.

Hope so. Under a new manager he can flourish. Koeman got the best from Pelle n Long. Its between him n vardy atm

Yeah that first game v Hull is very tempting. And their matches against Arsenal last year were very open... could do well and go on another run.

Yeah, few are talking about Vardy or Mahrez...when they proved how good they were last season, unbelievable that last season's best players could be differentials.

Exactly. They have a pretty mixed round of fixtures first up. Community shield should be a good indicator for them

This is the happiest I've been, and tried hundreds of different ways.

      ----------------Foster-----------------
      ----------Azpi Friend Souare------
      Townsend Siggy Martial Hazard
      ---------Aguero Vardy Gray--------
      -------------------------------------------
      Jakupovic Capoue Taylor Kone

Not looking beyond a post gw3 wildcard but that has the structure to save WC if I wanted.

So much value in defence. Wba boro Swansea at 4.5 wimmer and Jones at 5.0
It's making me overlook Chelsea and Fuchs who ya just know will do well. 😕

Can anyone answer why everyone likes Townsend? Do people think he's suddenly going to start scoring and assisting when he's got no real previous record of it? Cheers

He was in tremendous form towards the end of the season and has carried that form to the pre season. Has good fixtures and a pretty decent team so looks a grt pick at 6.5

Yeah fair enough, just looking that he's never scored more than 4 goals or got more than 3 assists in a season- good luck to those with him.

He is definitely not a season keeper in the team. Would be ditched if he doesnt perform till I wildcard or when the fixtures are against him

He's a talent and he makes good numbers. You're a member... go do a player comparison tool analysis of Townsend vs. James Milner.

Oh wait, Milner's stats are miles better.

Which trio do you think scores highest over the first 3 weeks?

      A) Williams, Tadic & Lukaku
      B) Fernandez, KDB & Long

He can. But I prefer Vardy over him to be more attacking and be on the points tally

I think Mahrez will end up outscoring Vardy. But Vardy will have explosive weeks
