Earlier this month Watford confirmed the signing of Belgian defender Christian Kabasele, who joins from Genk for a reported £5.8 million.

Arriving on a five-year deal, the centre-half was afforded an extended summer break due to Belgium’s involvement in Euro 2016 before making his debut as a second-half sub in the 3-1 friendly win over Union Berlin last Tuesday evening.

Discussing his move with the club’s official website earlier this week, the defender reckons his style of play should help him acclimatise to his new surrounds:

“I am expecting the rhythm and the level to be very high. It’s going to be difficult but I have to work hard for this. I have good speed and I’m strong in the challenge. Also with the head I scored some goals last year with Genk. I will also try to improve all my weak points to be a complete player and to help the team have a good season.”

The History

Born in Lubumbashi, Zaire, Kabasele began his career at Belgian second division side Eupen, making his debut as a 17-year-old in 2008. The following season he was part of the side that won promotion to the Belgian Pro League – in his first spell at the club, he made nine appearances in all competitions.

During the 2010/11 campaign, Kabasele was sent out on loan to fellow Pro League side Mechelen, where he played four times, scoring one goal.

In August 2011, the Belgian defender joined Bulgarian side Ludogorets Razgrad for an undisclosed fee. Although he was part of a side that won a league and cup double, registering three goals and an assist in 11 appearances, Kabasele returned to Eupen ahead of the 2012/13 campaign.

Over the next two seasons, Kabasele would cement himself as a regular, playing 41 matches and scoring six goals, impressing enough to earn himself a move to Genk in the summer of 2014.

Kabasele’s career has continued in an upward trajectory over the past two years, with an impressive seven goals and one assist accrued over 81 appearances for Genk. Standing at six foot once inch tall, the Belgian looks to have strong athleticism, and also the physical attributes in which to make the step up to the Premier League.

The 25-year-old has represented Belgium at every youth level from Under 18 upwards and notably scored five goals in 10 matches for the Under 19s. Kabasele has yet to make his senior debut, although he was a member of Marc Wilmots’ Euro 2016 squad.

The Prospects

The Watford defence was one of the most resilient budget rearguards around last term after keeping 11 clean sheets (eight at home) but, following the departure of Quique Sanchez Flores, the slate has very much been wiped clean.

Intriguingly, new boss Walter Mazzarri has started with a 3-5-2 formation in all three of the Hornets’ opening summer friendlies, though also utilised a four-man backline later in their first fixture.

Should, as expected, the Italian opt to play with three at the back, the likes of Jose Holebas, Allan Nyom and new boys Juan Camilo Zuniga and Brice Dja Djedjemay are likely to battle it out for the wing-back berths – all four are priced at 4.5 and look valid value options if they can nail down a regular role.

Frustratingly, Kabasele’s goal scoring record of 12 strikes over the last four seasons has earned him a price of 5.0 in FPL – that’s costlier than any Watford defender and on a par with Heurelho Gomes, who made more saves than any other goalkeeper last season, and also registered three penalty stops.

Granted, he is expected to command a regular role in the heart of defence as he battles it out with Craig Cathcart, Miguel Britos and Sebastian Prodl for a starting spot, though his price tag looks prohibitive – particularly if Mazzarri continues with a 3-5-2 and settles on his preferred wing-backs.

Certainly, Watford’s opening fixtures (sot, CHE, ARS, whm, MUN) will certainly also deter any initial investment in their main men, with points at either end of the pitch likely to be hard to come by in the early weeks of the season.

With some uncertainty over how Watford will line up at the back under Mazzari, FPL bosses will likely take a watching brief over the opening month of the Premier League season to evaluate the strongest route into the Hornets backline.

After that, though, a very favourable between Gameweeks 6 and 10 (bur, BOU, mid, swa, HUL) could well bring their cheap defenders onto our radars. Kabasele’s lofty valuation – relative to his backline team-mates – suggests he faces a real struggle to earn any investment unless he can make an immediate impact in and around the opposition box.

    Thoughts on this team?
Considering getting Ayew in, but their fixtures turn quite fast, so might wait.
Midfield is a bit light, but I'm keen on Kane atm.

    Mandanda, Jaku
    Azpi, Shaw, Dawson, Pieters, Paredes
    Hazard, Martial, Mirallas, Fischer, Hodgepodge
    Aguero, Kane, Long/Austin

Yup, uncertainty about the nailed-ness of Bats and Costa, William and Fab are quite a risk at 7.5. Defence is too pricy.

in attack it might be wise to wait and see how Conte has them playing.
But a defensive option is a good choice, although not essential.

He will be if he leaves but I'd rather replace him with another world class player like Higuain than someone like Witsel or Biglia. Pjanic is already a natural replacement for Pogba.

I like Pjanic and it weakens Roma to sign him from them.

But I don't think he has Pogba's strength or overall athleticism.

There is strong talk of Ake playing in midfield, so Smith may be in CB.

Either way, Francis looks set for RB, where he was an attacking beast last season.

Did Ake not playing full back at Watford anyway? Left back?!

I don't recall him playing as a centre half anyway.

Smith was mopping up the bonus points when he got into the side.

        1. Piggs Boson

He played CB one game, I think. Either way he's played CB/LB in the past.

The Cook - Smith combo worked that well that Tommy Elphick, the captain, couldn't win his place back and then went to Villa.

I'd be shocked if Ake was any threat to the two centre backs.

Hi guys . New to this site . Happy to become a member .

How does this look like ? Constructive criticism welcome .

        Foster / Boruc
        Shaw / Friend / McAuley / Paredes / Lenihan
Townsend / De Bruyne / Mkhitaryan / Hazard / Shaqiri
        Agüero / Hernández / Carroll

I know its light in defence and really heavy in Midfield but i plan to try and play all my 5 Mids every week and i think having a strong Mid is the way to go this season . Any comments most welcome .

424 is almost certainly not the same as your traditional English 442. Both are different systems, with differing roles & attacking mentalities.

Conte will most likely play 4-2-4 (4-4-2 while defending)

Oscar said that we have been putting heavy emphasis on training tactics everyday and he says Conte is preparing a 4-4-2.

                Interesting, thanks AK.

That does make Bats a more interesting option.

Same was said when he signed. People called him all this CDM nonsense. The must not have had an eye in their heads.

Yeah, Cesc cannot play deep. He is an attacking midfielder.

Not a CDM, but a player who's more the assister of the assister imo

He has 98 Premier League assists so that pretty much blows him being an assister of the assister out of the water.

Of course, but I just believe this in Conte's system. Under Jose for example, he had more of an effective role in the attack.

You build your system around the strengths of your players not impose one that will have a negative effect on their natural abilities.

Truth is you don't know what role Fabregas will really play.

A month ago everyone thought Conte would play a back three for example.

In my opinion in the double pivot you need a defensive midfielder and a ball player who drives the team forward I'd imagine that will be Fabregas, box to box - as always.

                    But we will see.

Indeed, it isn't certain what role Fabregas will play but it's just my opinion. You could well be right, he could be deployed as a box to box midfielder. Only time will tell.

True. I think it's close between the two.

Cesc beats him over the latter part of the season though, statistically. And I'd expect Fab to improve more than Willian this season.

It is the old is he nailed or not thing.

To me of course he is nailed. When he came back into the league his nailedness was questions and at a good price he was the best early Chelsea pick scored good points and made value.

@ 7.5m he could represent ridiculous value.

He maybe just doesn't seem heavyweight enough for some.

If he plays with Kante in a 442, he'll be the deepest of the forward 6. And lost some set pieces to Willian. And, as I said last season, his chances to assist ratio was unsustainable.

Why is Kane in so few RMTs? More proven than Ibra.

Also, I've gone with Pedro. Is he guaranteed to start?

Maybe in the Prem, which i suppose is all we're interested in. But Ibra is a beast. His title record is 9 in the last 10 seasons

I'm sure many people are in the same boat re: third striker @£6.5m.

          1) Gray
          2) Long
          3) Negrado
          4) Wilson
          5) Saido B
          6) A.Nother

Currently thinking Gray. Others are set to be Kun and Lukaku.

Don't see value in the £7-8.5m bracket.

Am a fan of Lukaku even if many on here aren't over last few seasons. Also think Koeman's Everton will do very well this year.

Can't believe Vardy, like Leicester, can replicate anything like last year, and is pricey at 10m. Also if Mahrez goes appeal dimishes further.

Not sure on Rooneys place in Utd set up yet, and others not sure.
