Up next in our series of members’ articles, which review the numbers behind the 2015/16 season, are Tottenham.

We kick start our analysis by assessing the north London outfit’s team statistics in Mauricio Pochettino’s second season in charge and compare them to the rest of the Premier League. After that, we then take a close look at their first-team squad, main goal threats and creative sources with one eye on the season kick-off in just three weeks’ time.

Pochettino’s side finished third last time around, 11 points behind champions Leicester and one point behind north London rivals Arsenal.

That fails to tell the full story, though, as Spurs were still in with a chance of winning the title right up until their Gameweek 36 trip to Chelsea, where a 2-2 draw at the Bridge, which saw the visitors pick up nine yellow cards, handed the crown to Claudio Ranieri’s men.

Subsequent losses to Southampton and relegated Newcastle – a 5-1 hammering at St James’ – meant their season ended in bitter disappointment, with the Gunners climbing above them to clinch the runners-up slot on the final day of 2015/16.

Rom due to his assured starts and favourable fixtures. Giroud may be rested against Liverpool.

      Romelu has great opening fixtures.
Costa is a card magnet and don't know yet how they'll be aligned with Batshuayi up front.

Yo Trigg, what'd you think of the Barragan transfer, worthy of our FPL teams? And what about Negredo vs Rhodes? I've got Negredo in as of now. Thinking of switching him out for Gray/Long till we know for sure who's playing upfront for Boro but at the same time, their fixtures are too goddamn tempting.

Anyone know if Palace are reliably linked with any strikers?
Campbell tearing it up pre-season (well, a couple of goals), actually a good player if Pards gives him the chance. Oh, and 4.5m...

He won't give him chance. They've made bids for Benteke and Saido. Gayle is happy to sit on their bench. Think Campbell and Connor will be moved on.

Yeah I've looked myself. There is just no striker sub 6m who is ever going to start matches bar an injury crises. Very frustrating, makes 3 5 2 impossible at the start for me.

Looked superb yesterday in pre season game, played well in one before that. Fully rested and looked hungry. I think he'll start yes. You can never be sure. But he's their best winger and only one who's left footed. Between Aaron and Gérard for other role.

What does everyone think of Stoke's midfield? They do have a good attacking outlay in general and post Gameweek 5, their fixtures become too sweet to ignore too, especially if they put up good performances in the opening weeks. Lots of options to choose from:
Shaqiri (6.5) and Arnautovic (7.5) seem to be the favourites as of now, and deservedly so, given their performance last season and somewhat in the Euros as well.
We also have Bojan (6.0), Walters (6.0) and potentially incoming Joe Allen (5.0), who we assume would be a regular starter and free up cash for us, in the running. All of whom, would get increased minutes on the pitch with Affelay out till mid-Jan with a knee injury.

If you were to pick a Stoke midfielder, who would be your bet? Or have you already bet on someone for your FPL teams?
Is this the season either of Bojan or Shaqiri explode as Stoke mount a definite challenge for the European spots?

I'll be watching them with the view of changing Townsend/Miralles to one of their assets for week six.

That said, Stoke are a very annoying fantasy team and tend to perform better against the bigger teams.

I would pick Bojan, despite his injury issues. If he stays fit he will grab those assists and is a steal at 6.0m. Joe Allen I don't think is attacking enough to succeed in fpl. Shaqiri for me is hot and cold. Arnautovic is a good shout as is good in the air, can play up front and has a great shot. So I would go for Bojan and Arnautovic.

      1. MigNick17

Second that. I was thinking Bojan would be the perfect differential at 6.0 come an injury-free start to the season.

Ha ha. There are too many wonderful midfielders out there to fear them all.

Top of my fear list is a player who I've not seen in a single team on here, but will be in a lot of casual line ups.

          Sanchez.

If he's fit and starts well we're all be wild carding to get him in.

I really think I found a good balance now, after getting rid of Ibra, for starters anyhow!

    Foster (Jaku)

    Shaw Ivan Friend (McAuley, Francis)

    Mkhi Mirallas KDB Townsend (Höjbjerg)

    Gray Batshuayi Aguero (c)

    0,5 ITB

Just have a few questions hoping the community can shed some light on...

    A. How sure is Ivans RB spot in Chelsea? Really don't want a 6,0 def benched or playing CB.

    B. What role will KDB have under Pep? No10? How effective have players under Pep been in that position?

    C. How sure is Batshuayi to start?

      A. Very unsure. I would avoid.
      B. Him, Silva and nolito will interchange behind aguero. All three are worth looking at.
      C. He's potentially a very, very good differential. I won't risk it myself, but I admire someone who does with those opening fixtures. I will be paying the extra for hazard or Costa.

        A. Not certain at all
        B. KDB will be float in between the lines and inter change with Silva and Nolito
        C. Think he will be awesome but can't see him starting the season ahead of Costa. He could well become Chelsea's main striker in Costa does not perform. (I think he will and I would go for Costa instead)

I really like it! Not a fan of Rondon (prefer Gray or Wilson) but otherwise can't really fault it. Are you sure about Stones? He's definitely not nailed on at Everton. Consider some of the LEI or SWA defs.

Also, you could even get rid of a 4.5 def to a 4 def to free up funds, as they'll rarely be playing.

I have Kone in at the moment as part of a rotation. Good goal threat and expect them to keep a few cleanies in the easier home games.

Would definitely consider PVA if the fixtures were better and could play him every week. Most attacking defender in the game, but need to see how Zmoyes will use him

van aanholt is a great option. moyes will get them organised defensively and i expect him to do really well.

might want to wait till fixtures clear up though

      PVA if any

Kone's a good option as he's cheap, decent presence on set pieces and Sunderland can be particularly resilient. However, I expect them to be in the bottom 5 at the end of the season so there are probably better options in that bracket.

Would you pick an Everton defender over Terry?

No. Don't understand why people are getting Everton defenders. They never keep cleanies and Baines probably isn't on pens.

Koeman does get the best out of wing backs.

Has to do with the fact that they're a good defensive bunch of players, that has Koeman at the helm now.

Assuming Conte sticks with 4 at the back, why would you want Azpi over Cahill?
Also, why the love for Wilson? I don't see him as any better an option than Gray, Long or Rhodes/Negredo but it seems like popular opinion sways in the opposite direction.

Bit stuck with my choice of "cover":

    A) Siggy and Azpi (Siggy on all set pieces, and Azpi possibly in a good defensive team and on the wing?)
    B) Eriksen and Williams (Eriksen on set pieces for a very good team, Williams is a beast)

Any good picks from the Chelsea 7.5 mids from GW1?

Prefer Willian but unsure if he, Oscar or Pedro will start. Fabregas most likely but my least favourite of the bunch.

Or just go straight for Costa/Bats a save a bit elsewhere

    Hey all,

Draft 1.0 here. Barely around so not sure whats the trend and template is. But I'll give it a shot?

    Foster - Heaton
    Shaw - FunesMori - Kone - Souare - Wilson
    Hazard - Coutinho - Ayew - Mirallas - 4.5m
    Kun - Ibra - Austin

    Thoughts?

Austin a rotation risk? what strategy will you stick with throughout the season, 3-4-3? if yes maybe go for Negredo

      1. Koflok
        • 13 Years

3-4-3 for now. I dont have problem with going 3-5-2 if I have to, but there's plenty of good mid priced forward this year it seems.

Is Austin rotation risk? Isnt he Southampton's only no 9?

    Right after some tinkling here it is;
    RMT
    Foster (Heaton)
    C Dawson--Naylor--Morgan (Shaw, Friend)
    Mhikitaryan--Ayew--Mirallas--Mahrez (Hojbjerg)
    Aguero--Costa--Austin

Looks good except not sure if Naylor is nailed on but should he start he should be good value for money

Koeman always favours wingbacks. A better defensive showing under Koeman and set-piece responsibilities should see him racking up those points. If you have the funds, go for him

Has there ever been a season with SO much uncertainty about starting elevens? So many new managers or new to the league clubs. More signings than ever. I reckon I could predict the week one line up accurately for two or three teams right now.

Some people are going to get very lucky or unlucky first game.

nope, I can't recall a season like this going back to the 90s. the no of new managers is staggering -

      Conte
      Mourinho
      Guardiola
      Mazzarri
      Moyes
      Hull's new manager
      Koeman at everton

    Foster - 4.0

Friend, VvD, Funes Mori, (Evans, 4.0)

    Barkley, Mahrez, Ayew, KDB (4.5)

    Long, Aguero, Lukaku

    Downgrade a mid/fwd to upgrade 4.0 defender?

Other than the tripling up on Everton (which makes sense given your Username) no need to upgrade your 4.0 defender. Though Funes Mori isnt nailed on, is he?

No he isn't, I'm picking him on the basis Stones is transferred. If he isn't i'll take him out

    Courtois
    Dann Coleman Shaw Friend
    Alli Hazard Ayew Bolasie
    Aguero Rooney
    Manonne Carroll Leko Smith

Carroll may well become Negredo Gray or Wilson and Rooney to Lukaku could well happen but think I like the rest

Thoughts about this team for the first 3GWs:
    Foster/Jaku
    Shaw/Walker/Azpi/Friend/Paredes
    Eriksen/Fab/Ayew/Drinkw/Leko
    Kun/Zlatan/Negredo

Will most likely WC after GW3.
