Burnley’s Andre Gray bags a fifth goal of the summer. Gerard Deulofeu and Ross Barkley net again for Everton, whilst Spurs hand a debut to both their pre-season signings in a 2-1 loss to Juventus.

Bolton 1 Burnley 2

Another day, another Andre Gray goal, as the striker netted for the fifth time in pre-season in Burnley’s narrow win over their Lancashire rivals.

Gray, priced at 6.5 in the Fantasy Premier League, is rapidly becoming a great example of the form v fixtures debate. He is currently in nearly 10% of FPL squads even though Liverpool, Chelsea and Leicester are among Burnley’s first five opponents.

The striker converted a penalty that he earned himself before Bolton hit back and continued to threaten, only for Josh Ginnelly to win it for the Clarets with a late strike.

Strikers Ashley Barnes and Lukas Jutkiewicz, who both suffered hamstring tweaks at the weekend, missed out, as did David Jones and Fredrik Ulvestad. As a result, Dan Agyei was handed a first senior start up front.

After the match, Clarets boss Sean Dyche issued some mixed news on Barnes and Jutkiewicz’ injuries:

“Ashley is unfortunately going to be a bit longer than we hoped. We are not sure exactly how long yet but he’s tweaked a hamstring muscle. The good news is it’s not in the belly of the hamstring, but we are hoping it will settle down quickly. He got off quickly (at Bradford), which is helpful, and Lukas’s is just common sense and a bit of tightness. His (injury) is very minor and he trained on grass on Tuesday and will be training the rest of the week.”

Burnley XI: Heaton (Robinson, 66); Lowton (Darikwa, 71), Keane (Mee, 45), Tarkowski (K. Long, 71), Ward (Lafferty, 66); Arfield (Jackson, 81), O’Neill, Marney (Boyd, 59), Kightly (Ginnelly, 81); Agyei (Hennings, 66), Gray (C. Long, 45).

MK Dons 1 Everton 3

Gerard Deulofeu scored one goal and set up another as Everton continued their Ronald Koeman learning curve.

With Romelu Lukaku only just back in training – and his Everton future still in doubt – the young Spaniard was again fielded as a “false nine” and seemed to take a real liking to Koeman’s desire for quick, early balls forward and a pressing game high up the pitch.

That pressure forced a defensive error that Deulofeu capitalised on for the first goal before he played in Ross Barkley for the second.

Muhamed Besic rounded off the Everton scoring late on from an Aiden McGeady assist.

Martin Stekelenburg was preferred to Joel Robles in goal and put in a performance that had the local media suggesting the number one jersey is the Dutchman’s to lose, while Koeman made a raft of changes as the match wore on, including his entire back four, with Leighton Baines and the fit-again John Stones given pitch time.

Despite the victory, Koeman conceded his side were very much a work in progress:

“The team, the players, we need to press better. The pitch in some stages of the game was too long. If you press up front, it means the midfielders they need to push up as well and it’s the same for the defenders. If one is pressing and the player behind is not following, you get problems. On that we need to improve.”

Everton XI: Stekelenburg, Coleman (Baines 61), Pennington (Holgate 61), Mori (Stones 61), Oviedo (Galloway 61), Tarashaj (McGeady 46), Cleverley (Besic 61), Davies (Gibson 61), Mirallas (Lennon 61), Barkley (Dowell 61), Deulofeu

Barnsley 2 Hull 2

A late equaliser from Jarrod Bowen kept Hull’s unbeaten pre-season record intact.

Bowen struck from a Peter Odemwingie assist as caretaker manager Mike Phelan was again forced to field a number of Academy players in light of the club’s many injury woes.

Adama Diomande had given the Tigers the lead early in the first half, finishing well from a Shaun Maloney pass, but Barnsley gave as good as they got throughout the match and came within four minutes of securing a comeback victory.

David Meyler made his first appearance of pre-season to boost Phelan’s midfield options, although the latter’s days in the role look numbered, with former Everton boss Roberto Martinez now the clear favourite to land the Hull job.

Hull XI: Kuciak, Elmohamady, Tymon, Davies, Clackstone (Barkworth 59), Diame, Clucas, Maloney (Meyler 78), Odemwingie (Olley 87), Diomande (Bowen 46), Luer (Hernandez 57).

Spurs 1 Juventus 2

Tottenham’s pre-season started with a loss to Juventus as coach Mauricio Pochettino fielded an inexperienced side that gifted the Italian giants two first half goals.

With a raft of international stars still recovering from their summer workload, Pochettino did at least manage to hand debuts to new signings Victor Wanyama and Vincent Janssen. Given that Kevin Wimmer (black eye) and Christian Eriksen (illness) missed out, asking such a young team to keep Juventus at bay was always going to be tricky.

Spurs improved considerably after the break and Erik Lamela, one of three half-time substitutes, cut the arrears after good work from Wanyama, who was one of only two outfield players to feature from start to finish.

Post-match, Pochettino was hopeful that Eriksen could recover in time for the upcoming clash against Atletico Madrid:

“[Eriksen] got a virus when we arrived in Australia on Saturday. It was impossible for him to be involved in the game [against Juventus]. We’ll see. We will see what happens on Friday and we hope he will be available to play 45 minutes.”

Spurs XI: Vorm; Trippier (Walkes 63), Ball (Amos 79), Carter-Vickers, Miller (Yedlin 46); Mason (Winks 46), Wanyama; Son (Lamela 46), Carroll (Edwards 63), Chadli (Onomah 46); Janssen (Harrison 63).

    Afternoon boys!

I've just built my first 'sans Siggy' team, so let's get your views:

    A) Siggy - Funes Mori - Ayala
    B) Firmino - Ferdández - Friend

    Heaton - Foster
    Shaw - Ferdández - Friend - Koné - Wollscheid
    Martial - Mahrez - Firmino - Townsend - Leko
    Aguero - Costa - Wilson

Have I gone too cheap in defence now?

Well I can do that if I go back to Siggy. That's kind of my point.

I've just downgraded to 5M defenders to fit Firmino in, and was gauging the community's view.

        Thanks mate

What do you think about Firmino & Townsend vs. Siggy & Tadić? My team is very similar to yours with this exception.

Oh yes, I like that! Tadic was in my (hypothetical) team all the way up to launch, and my first few drafts, but then he slipped out for Siggy.

Could be lovely to have both.

You don't think the 5.5 + 4*4.5 is a bit weak at the back?

If he nails a position and continues to be a strong goal scoring threat though... What about Firmino & Redmond.

0.5M in the bank there too.

I'll se about Redmond, not firm on him atm. My backline was Azpilicueta, Shaw, Taylor, Friend, Souare, but I downgraded Azpi to Gabriel and I also have Lukaku instead of Costa, which gives me that extra 0.5 to still be able to have a combo of Siggy and Tadić in the midfield. I'll think about it, but I might go for Firmino & Mirallas, not a fan of Townsend.

Also, Wenger has said he needs a replacement for Mertesacker, so maybe Gabri is not as nailed as we would like to think. Chambers could even step up.

I like it apart from Leko as not sure about his playing time and wingers under Pulis tend not to prosper! Keep an eye on Fernandez because Van Der Hoorn might take his position.

Leko is purchased to probably not play very much. If he appears to not be nailed I'd likely replace him with Capou.

Thanks for the heads up on Fernandez. Could always replace him with Taylor

As a Liverpool fan I'm not certain Firmino will start. Klopp has been testing 433 so could see front 3 of Coutinho, Sturridge, Mane. Would maybe downgrade Martial to free up money for defence. Apart from that great!

I want to pick an Everton defender as I like their fixtures and should be more solid this year. Who are you going for? I am torn between the below 3.

Baines: I confess I have a bit of man love for him, at 5.5 its a bit hard to refuse. Possible the player who would benefit the most from Lukaku leaving as he will be on more set pieces.
Coleman: More attacking from general play
Mori: 0.5 cheaper and gets the odd goal. Rotation risk with Stones and Jagielka around.

They're playing 3-5-2 now and he's been getting returns in pre-season, because he's not the defensive midfielder in that formation. Normally pre-season isn't too important, but scoring in those games is still a very good sign for 4.5m midfielders.

Anyone got one eye on the Spurs outgoing transfer speculation?

    Pritchard (AM) 4.5m
    Bentaleb 4.5m

BOTH could be great 5th mid options. Pritchard in particular, if he gets a move / loan to a med/low prem club, it could be gold.

    Rate out of 10 please:

    Mandanda (Jakupovic)
Shaw - Terry - Morgan - Taylor (Smith)
Mahrez - Mkhitaryan - Ayew (Leko - Højbjerg)
    Aguero - Lukaku - Costa

As my boss is starting to suss that I'm getting nowt done, I'm gonna take a time out and leave it at this for a while

    Any thoughts ?

    Foster / Jaku
Stones* / Shaw / Gabriel Friend Brad Smith
    Mikhti / Mahrez / Cesc / Lamela* / Ramirez* (if 5.5)
Aguero / Lukaku / Big Andy Carrol

    * Would swap in Ayew and a cheaper mid leaving money to upgrade Stones if he does not go to City

Like Lamela and Ramirez. Agree Stones is a risk and would try to find extra 0.5 to upgrade to Baines/Coleman. I prefer Willian over Cesc. Carrol is interesting...

As and when we get an idea of Conte's chelsea structure, I'd be tempted to look toward Willian / Pedro / Cuadrado rather than Cesc, but as of now I'm sure thaty Cesc is nailed, as opposed to the three others

Perfect rotation of the keepers/cheapies and Spurs/Ars.

Good morning everyone, hope you are all well!

Here is the updated version of my New Players Analysis Spreadsheet.

    http://bit.ly/2auNGHa

The main new feature is the "value" column being filled in with the launch of the new game. The mathematics of this is explained on the spreadsheet but it is basically a good way of comparing players of a similar price (the bigger the difference in price the less reliable).

Finally, I am going to be added an extra sheet called "VS". Some of you may remember this from last year. I am looking for the decisions you are struggling to make. For example, Payet or Mkh and Lukaku or Costa. If you drop them in the comments below I will pit them against each other with all the stats, points per app and value for you!

Hope you all enjoy and it helps with those team selection headaches!

Pogba and agent stalling on move to united due to money, madrid now interested and probably because they want to teach united a lesson after they messed around with De Gea

    Thanks all. 🙂

    Foster - Jakup
    Azpi - Shaw - Friend - Pieters - Smith
    KDB - Mkhi - Deulofeu - Hazard - Capoue
    Kun - Gray - Long

Can someone who knows a thing or two about Southampton help me out re: Redmond?
    Basically, how nailed is he?

Scored me some nice differential points at Norwich in the past, looking to re-invest, but Bolasie in the same price bracket is tempting.

I don't think anyone can answer that question yet sorry

Long, Austin, J Rod, Tadic and Redmond for three positions- Tadic the only one likely nailed at this point

I recommend waiting until season commences before committing to soton attack unless you want Tadic
