Earlier this month, Southampton made Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg their second signing of the summer following the arrival of Nathan Redmond from Norwich. The 20-year-old joins from Bayern Munich for an undisclosed fee, reportedly worth £12 million, and has penned a five-year contract at St Mary’s.

Discussing his move with the club’s official website, Hojbjerg revealed talks with new Saints boss Claude Puel helped make the decision to join Southampton an easy one:

“I spoke with the manager and it was very positive in his way of analysing my style and the club. Also, his style was very clear and I like that. I like it when somebody has a style that they are clear about and they know what they want as it’s easier to follow and be part of.”

The History

Born in Copenhagen, Denmark, Hojbjerg started his youth career at BK Skjold and F.C Copenhagen, before joining up with Brondby at the age of 14.

Having been named Danish Under 17 Player of the Year in 2011, the midfielder joined Bayern Munich a year later, and after making his debut for the second team in 2012, was handed his professional debut as a substitute against FC Nurnberg in April 2013. He finished the 2012/13 campaign having made two league appearances, while he scored eight goals and registered one assist in 30 matches for the reserves.

Hojbjerg made seven Bundesliga appearances in 2013/14, claiming one assist, while he played 14 times for the reserves, scoring four goals and providing a single assist.

In order to gain more first-team experience, Hojbjerg was sent out on loan to fellow Bundesliga side FC Augsburg in January 2015. The Dane made 16 appearances in all competitions, scoring twice and supplying three assists.

Last season, the midfielder joined Schalke 04 on a season-long loan. After initially struggling to command a regular starting berth, he chalked up 30 appearances in all competitions, claiming two assists.

After representing his country at every youth level from Under 16 to Under 21, scoring 12 goals in 38 appearances, Hojbjerg made his senior debut against Sweden in May 2014. He has played 16 times for Denmark and has scored one goal.

The Prospects

During pre-season so far, Puel has mainly utilised a midfield diamond and has occasionally trialled a 4-3-3 – in either set-up, Hojbjerg looks likely to be stationed in a defensive midfield role following the departure of Victor Wanyama to Tottenham.

The Danish international has sometimes played further forward during his career, though, and could play on the side of a diamond, with neither Jordy Clasie or Oriol Romeu offering any real threat.

Standing at 6ft 1in, Højbjerg offers a strong presence in the middle of the park, and has good technical ability in terms of his passing, dribbling and finishing, particularly from long range. His positioning as a defensive midfield player is also impressive, and he registered an interception every 24 minutes for Schalke last season, better than Clasie (27.8), Wanyama (38) and Romeu (43.1). Of all four players, Romeu led the way for successful tackles last term with one every 30.2 minutes, ahead of Wanyama (36.2), Hojbjerg (38.6) and Clasie (42.9).

Hojbjerg certainly looks capable of filling the void left by Wanyama, then, and while he hardly carries a significant attacking threat, he did average a shot every 57.9 minutes last season, better than Romeu (61.6), Wanyama (84.5) and Clasie (113.4).

The former Bayern midfielder only managed a key pass every 182 minutes last term, though, mainly due to featuring in a deep-lying midfield position. Nonetheless, an 87.4% successful pass rate is indicative of his excellent distribution.

While a defensive midfield player wouldn’t normally be of huge interest for Fantasy managers, Hojbjerg’s price of 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) has brought him firmly onto our radars, with the Dane currently sat in 4.1% of squads.

He’s currently only second to West Brom’s Darren Fletcher (14.4%) for ownership in FPL among 4.5-priced midfielders, and, having impressed on his first start against FC Twente, could well establish a regular starting role at St Mary’s.

He’ll be competing with the likes of Clasie and Romeu for a place in Puel’s XI, while Steven Davis and James Ward-Prowse are slightly more attack-minded midfield players who could operate on the sides of a diamond.

Hojbjerg was on the bench for today’s friendly with FC Groningen and introduced at half-time. Both Clasie and Romeu were handed starts in the Saints’ engine room, with Ward-Prowse and Nathan Redmond also in the starting XI.

The Saints’ opening fixtures offer up some plum home ties (WAT, SUN, SWA, BUR) over the opening eight Gameweeks, though there’s no doubt that Dusan Tadic (7.5) and, to a lesser extent, Redmond (6.0) have a greater potential for attacking hauls.

Going on his output so far, Hojbjerg looks best utilised as a bench-warner initially until we get an idea of Southampton’s Fantasy prospects under their new manager. The youngest player ever to represent Bayern in the Bundesliga, there’s no denying the new boy has a touch of class and if Puel affords him the platform to flourish, we’ll be keeping a keen eye on his potential as the campaign unfolds.

So, what is the consensus. Are we getting both Aguero and Zlatan, or just Aguero? I just can't get used to the remaining budget.

Anyone throwing their season away by going only Zlatan?

What sparked Chelsea's come back? Was it all down to Hazard?

Real Madrid had the u14s out, barely a comeback in the end, two through balls and he went round the keeper and put it in the open net twice

The goals may have been late in coming, but it was all Chelsea in the second half even when the RM youngsters had not come on. Probably Conte told them about their dire 1st half performance at HT. With regards to the goals, Hazard just utilised the spaces left between and behind the defenders and latched on to 2 through balls.

Real kids, idiot goalie, but also bringing on Cuadrado and Moses and some proper wing play. A bit of that + Kante firming up the defence will add some buzz to Chelsea's play in the PL.

Hasn't been starting along with the other first teamers tho? Do you really think that two of long Austin and Redmond will be benched are the expense of him. I certainly don't

It's been him a Austin starting up with tadic behind, and yeah I think there is a chance, forget about last season for Rodriguez which was ruined by injuries, he got 15 goals in the 14/15 season. I'm not saying he will start but he 100% has a chance. Probably a better chance than what Redmond does and the fact he's more mobile than Austin helps his cause alot as puel prefers to play with pacey strikers

Long guy a fair few goals at the end of last season. Redmond and Rodriguez can score a few. Tadic will chip in with his fair share of goals. Steven Davis gets a fair few himself. Fonte and vvd will probably get a fair few from corners as well. There is goals in that side even without Austin imo

Long goes straight into the first team lineup. Austin plays with the second team lineup. Redmond clearly more likely to be dropped from the first team lineup at the expense of Austin, yet this may not happen at all

                1. Worzel Gummidge
                    9 years, 6 months ago

None of this may happen at all. I think Austin is nailed. He has been doing something called scoring many goals and more than the others in what you call a 'second team line up'.

It really skews most tables. I was looking at Redmond but he made 11 sub appearances last year, hard to draw any conclusions from the raw data.

Would also be great if they kept a game-by-game breakdown of everything on a players profile. Just like the ICT table here but you could replace it with every other variable to see consistency etc. http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/player-profiles/nathan-redmond/

I haven't been on here much this year yet but how does this team structure look...

        Butland, £4m
        Blind, Williams, £4.5m, £4.5m, £4m
        Mahrez, Ali, Ayew, Delofeu, £4.5
        Aguero, Ibrahimovic, £6.5

I fully expect to use my wildcard by week 4 so this is just for the first three weeks.

Batshuayi looked good. Just got the 1 assist, but looked involved in the game and had a good chance that Danilo blocked. I was surprised Conte didn't start him. Hopefully he starts against Milan and Bremen. Batshuayi is one to monitor, surely?

I am just happy, as a Chelsea fan, to see him justify his price tag. I was a bit suspicious about the transfer but he already has looked better than what I had expected. I can easily see him getting 15+ goals this season if he starts games.

Conte said he had an injury which affected his training. Don't think he is unhappy with Costa imo.

How do you find my team:

        Hart - Jakupovic
Moreno - Van Aanholt - Azpilicueta - Shaw - Stones
        Ozil - Cuadrado - Fischer - Townsend - Hojbjerg
        Aguero - Ibrahimovic - Long

        ?

I think putting rooney in is a bit o hastey, he got a goal and a pen today which is good but not enough to justify the fact that he is fight Ibra and rashford for the strikers spot and the fact that he's quite clearly past his best

I have no need for Zlatan at 11.5m with Agüero already in my team as my main captaincy option, also have Martial as United cover. Taking a risk without Hazard but I do have Cesc too.

Yes, agreed. Shaw probably safer pick for the moment, but I think he could well be an option.

The masterpiece is complete, I think:

        Foster - Heaton
        Friend - Azpilicueta - Evans - Pieters - Shaw
        Ayew - Hazard - Fischer - Tadic - Townsend
        Aguero - Lukaku - Gray

        Your thoughts?

Scoreboard journalism. He was just fine in the early season, just didn't get results. That happens, particularly when you rely more on others finishing chances you create than finishing them yourself.

We will agree to disagree on that mate.. although there can be little doubt that were signs towards the end of the season and at the euros that he is back to his best

        Courtois
        Friend Shaw Baines
        Fischer Silva Bolasie Hazard
        Aguero Ibrahimovic Rondon
        Subs Jaku Soaure Evans Barry

Happy with majority just a bit unsure on Bolasie & Soaure.

        Thoughts?

          3 week then wildcard team;

          -------------Foster----------------
          ---Valencia VVD Dann--------
          Mahrez KDB Hazard Fischer
          -----Gray Aguero Austin------
          --------------------------------------
          Jakupovic Capoue Fernandez Kone

          * Valencia plays all 3
          * VVD and Dann play gw 1&3 (WAT, SUN & WBA BOU)
          * Kone and Fernandez come in for gw2 (MID, HUL) as above two are away to: tot, utd.
          * Fischer is cheap and has the fixtures, Gray has two homes in a row v dodgy away defences
          * Mahrez to become either Mkhy/Martial/Payet in gw2 most likely
          * Unsure on Austin, can be Rondon or Wilson

are there any decent 7.5 strikers (not watford) or is defoe the best option at 7? Have gray already btw
