Having already drafted in talented young players such as Jordon Ibe, Lewis Cook and Lys Mousset in this transfer window, Bournemouth signed left-back Brad Smith from Liverpool on Wednesday. The 22-year-old arrives at Dean Court for a reported fee worth up to £6 million including add-ons.

After penning a four-year contract with the Cherries, the Australian international is determined to earn more pitch time after struggling to convince at Anfield:

“It all happened quite quickly. I knew there was a bit of interest and then they put the bid in, Liverpool accepted and it went from there. I flew to America (with Liverpool) and was there for about five days. Once I found out the bid had been accepted, I stopped training with the team to make sure everything went the right way. It’s a great stadium here and it’s a great opportunity for me to come and play in front of the fans. Hopefully I’ll do well, learn a lot and progress in my career”.

The History

Born in Sydney, Australia, Smith’s big break came when he was scouted as a teenager by Liverpool. He moved over to England at the age of 14, and progressed through the academy to make his first-team debut as a substitute in a 2-1 defeat to Chelsea in December 2013.

That would be Smith’s only appearance of the 2013/14 season, though, and he would spend the opening months of the following campaign on loan at Swindon Town, where he played 10 matches in all competitions, registering one assist.

In September last year, Smith signed a new long-term contract with the Reds, but while he managed 10 first-team appearances in all competitions, scoring one goal and providing two assists, three of his four Premier League outings came when manager Jurgen Klopp rested many of his regular starters around the Europa League campaign.

Due to Smith’s parents being English, the defender was eligible to play for both England and Australia at international level. He featured for England at Under 17, Under 19 and Under 21 levels, playing 16 times in total, before deciding to represent Australia. He made his senior debut for the Socceroos in September 2014 against Saudi Arabia, and currently has nine caps to his name. He has also played eight matches at Under 23 level for Australia, scoring one goal.

The Prospects

Costing a mere 4.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Smith’s acquisition will obviously put us on alert to the prospect of a cut-price route into Bournemouth’s back-four.

The new boy was handed his first start against Cardiff on Saturday afternoon, less than 24-hours after Charlie Daniels was the preferred left-back against Reading.

It’s fair to say that Smith faces a tough task to nail down a starting berth for the beginning of the season. Given that Daniels racked up an impressive three goals and five assists last term, and ranked fifth among defenders for key passes, it seems like the left-back berth is his to lose at present.

So far, Daniels is currently owned by 5.9% of FPL managers, more than double any other Cherries defender.

There’s no doubt that Daniels’ price rise to 5.0 is off-putting, though, bearing in mind that Bournemouth conceded 67 times last term and served up just seven clean sheets.

Similarly, Steve Cook’s valuation has also climbed out of the budget bracket on the back of four goals and two assists last season – having carried a strong set-piece threat last season, finishing joint-fifth among defenders for shots in the box with 21, helping him claim four goals and two assists.

At 4.5, then, Simon Francis currently makes the most persuasive case for consideration as the Cherries prepare to face Palace, West Brom, Watford and Hull in the opening eight Gameweeks.

The new skipper produced just one key pass less than Daniels last season despite featuring at centre-half on numerous occasions and with Adam Smith only just returning from injury to earn 45 minutes against Cardiff on Saturday, the versatile Francis could start the season at right-back.

It’s worth noting, though, that Francis is looking to become a regular in central defence this term, which suggests that Adam Smith – also costing 4.5 – could also be one to monitor if he claims the right-back slot once his fitness is up to scratch.

Despite last season’s defensive record, it’s somewhat surprising to see that the Cherries were the fifth most resilient team in terms of minutes per shot conceded in 2015/16, while they ranked seventh for shots conceded inside the box.

Ultimately, there’s too much uncertainty over Brad Smith’s minutes to take unnecessary risks, in spite of such a budget-friendly price tag. His arrival now offers Howe two viable options at left-back, which, in turn, lessens the likelihood of Nathan Ake featuring there. The on-loan Chelsea man was utilised in this position whilst at Watford last year and is now determined to nail down a central midfield role for the Cherries. At 4.5 and listed as a defender, his situation is also clearly worth monitoring – Ake made his debut as a centre-half on Friday evening against Reading.

Not sure, my thinking is if they sign someone like Ulloa it might be good, Ulloa is a big, tall guy and could draw defenders attention to himself, making space for Siggy to make run from midfield to the box and score from crosses. Ofcourse, all speculations, untill we see it noone knoes

    Heaton - Pickford

    FMori - Gabs/other 5.0 - Naylor + Jevans rotating h/a apart from 2 weeks all season - Alex Bruce

    Mahrez - Hazard - Eriksen - Routledge - Fletcher

    Kun - Zlatan - Gray

I'd just want a 4th mid at least 6/6.5, great value potentially with players like Townsend and deulofeu

If it were me I'd downgrade Eriksen and up upgrade routledge

          Possibilities:
          Lamela and Townsend
          Lamela and Deulofeu
          Tadic/Ayew and bolasie

It's your team ofc, just food for thought!

Will someone RMT?? Been chopping and changing frequently but could quite possibly be settled on this.

    Cech, Jaku

    Payet, Mkhi, Mahrez, Deulofeu, Ibe,
    Kun, Gray, Long

Arsenal don't have the greatest opening fixtures. But Cech is quality.

Terry might be rotated once Zouma is back. Unsure about Jones playing time.

Payet likely to miss the first GW due to Euros.

Not too fond of 2 x 6.5 strikers myself as it requires a lot of restructuring if one of the bigger guns hit the ground running, but to each their own.

      Strong midfield 7/10.

Yeah for me in goal the fixtures are irrelevent if I plan to keep him all season long, but I understand your point.

Terry and Jones are a little risky but until Zouma is back if Chelsea don't sign a defender I think he's nailed. Jones is very much wait and see/hope for the best.

Balls I forgot about Payet and resting up, you're probably right.

There are so many midfield options that I'm not sure I want to justify another big hitting forward to sacrifice a midfielder.

        Cheers for your comments mate.

Sorry, I have added another option in my plan to have both Hazard and Mahrez. Please take a look.

    a)
    Mkhitaryan - Hazard - Mahrez - 4.5m - 4.5m (Fletcher/Hojbjerg)

    Aguero - Lukaku - Negrado
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    b)
    Mkhitaryan - Hazard - Mahrez - Fischer - 4.5m (Hojbjerg)

    Aguero - Lukaku - 5.5m (Grabban/Borini)
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    c)
    Mkhitaryan - Hazard - Mahrez - Deulofeu - 4.5m

    Aguero - 6.5m - 6.5m (Long/Negredo)

    Leaves me with 0.5m too

I'm experimenting a little now with my lineup and just wondering what everyone thinks of this

    Heaton (Jaku)
Stones Was Friend (J Evans Pieters)
    Haz Mahrez Tadic Sig (Capoue)
    Rooney Aguero Gray

I did have Mkhi and Ayew but Mkhi hasn't impressed me in the last 2 friendliest and if Ayew moves to West Ham I think that makes him less appealing.

I'm interested to see how Mahrez does because all this Ranieri talk of the his head being turned is concerning.

Another option is Mahrez out and KDB in or upgrade slightly elsewhere as I would have about £1.5m to play with it I went with this team.

The community shield will have a big impact on my team and which Utd and Leic players I have

Hi mate your team is fairly similar to mine (see below post)

I'd personally go Ozil over Mahrez - really like your team.

I'm not sure who to have as the 4.5 midfielder - Capoue has impressed preseason but how much does that mean? Could Mendy do well at LEI? He's being dubbed as a defensive mid but he's so much more than that - lot of guile about him!

      1. Graceless Goof

I'm going to see how Mahrez does and then make a decision because Lei first fixture is too good to ignore I think.

If I go with this team then I do have 1.5m ITB so there's potential movement. All depends on the community shield really because Martial is a definite option too

Hi everyone I'd like some opinions on Man Utd attackers if that's cool? ie:

If you have Aguero would you fork out on Ibra?
Mkh is 9.5, would you not prefer other 9.5 options eg Ozil?
Is Rooney actually going under the radar. I agree he was awful for large aprts last year although as a set piece taker and starting high up the pitch under Jose, is he more appealing than Lukaku (also £9m) who is shrouded in uncertainty.

This is my team - any feedback would be appreciated. I finished 120k last year after top 8k the year before, looking to get back up there this time around!

    Heaton
Wimmer Stones (assuming City's starting XI) Morgan
    Siggy Ozil deBruyne Willian
    Aguero Lukaku Gray

    Foster Wasilewski Amat Mendy

From what I've been reading, Vertonghen is likely to be back for the start of the season if not he's only going to miss one or two games.

Strong midfield and attack however one injury or suspension and you're either gonna have a 2 pointer or a non player come on, think you need to reinvest in the bench just a little to get some actual starters on there.

    2. Rossonero

Lukaku is great pick, better than Rooney, Lukaku will score at least 15 goals and get at least 5 assists, while Rooney will share points with 3-4 other players and also is not playing very well for a while.

Wimmer and Stones i would avaid, i think Vert is close to returen and Stones even if he goes to Man City until we see in the first couple of games what is Guardilola thinking is big risk

I irrcVkes was out most of the season. When he came back, Burnley were struggling in the relegation fight and had awful fixtures at the end. Dyche played more 451 with Vokes coming off the bench. Season before that and the one just gone, Vokes would normally be a starter.

Of course you are likely to do that after a long term injury.

Vokes doesn't score as heavily as Gray though so unfortunately he won't be another Ighalo but taking the penalties is a pain.

Been on AOA in several drafts now and it looks like I'm going to start the season this way...

    Team now:

    Foster
    Valencia - Pieters
    Bolasie Tadic Ayew Haz Deulofeu
    Ibra Gray Kun

    Anyone else going with AOA?

Can't see why you would. I'd rather play a 4.5 defender with a good fixture than Bolasie v Pulis

I actually see no point of AoA chip...i just keep him for situation where i have 3 defenders suspended/injured to use it, it could save you from doint a -4 hit

Wasilweski looks likely to start gw1 right?

Seems like the new bloke they signed is more of a full back?

Yep. Don't really even need him for gw1, just nice to have a potential 0.2 riser

Two sides to that coin though. If more people have him than say Smith or Paredes, sales could make him fall too.

I keep forgetting Huth is suspended. I don't really know about their new signing either but Wasilewski was a decent stand in through out last season.

Can somebody RMT please? Have a good feeling about Sturridge (providing he stays fit)

    Courtois / Jakupovic
    Gabriel / Stones / Evans / Taylor / Smith
    Hazard / Mkhitaryan / Eriksen / Fischer / Capoue
    Aguero / Sturridge / Long

Thanks. If I'm honest I've never really seen him play, just remember there was a bit of hype around him a few years back. I'd probably go Gaston Ramirez if he comes in at 5.5.

I'd try to get hazard in, downgrading giroud to gray, firmino to siggy. I'd swap Wilson for Long as well. Then you could lose eriksen for hazard.

I believe in wilson. And gray and siggy for giroud and firmino leaves me with no atsenal and pool attackers. Keen on hazard, but hes usually a sliw starter

    Pick one from each pair:

    Mahrez, Hazard
    Ibra, Kane

Then, is it worth starting with Mahrez for GW1 then transferring to Hazard for GW2 onwards?

      Ibra

Mahrez vs a depleted Hull for GW 1. Hazard after that.

The jury is still out on the Kane vs Ibra decision.
      - Ibra first season in PL
      - Kane consistent 20+ goal scorer
      - Dembele not back yet though
      - Mkhi offers United cover from midfield

I feel like I am being pressured into getting Ibra as every man and his dog will have him. Easy to swap for somebody else if not firing.

Waiting for CS this weekend before I make a decision though.

      Haz and Ibra.

Mahrez is great pick for GW1 but i have a rly good feeling about Haz, and he have nice first few fixtures.

Ibra vs Kane.. Ibra imo because Kane might still be a bit tired after EURO and there is the Dembele effect, also if Kane start fireing and Ibra flops its an easy switch

I've got practically the same, except a 7.5 (Tadic) rather than firmino, with an extra 1m in defence - could then upgrade one of those 4.5s to Shaw if you wanted

Completely different fund spread but I'm the same in terms of being happy with midfield and forwards but really stumped by the defence.

Stones moving to city could help things I suppose

          I mean you don't need 3 premium defenders AND a 2 4.5 cheapies - either get 3x4.5 or change both 4.5 to 4.0s

    2. Rossonero
      • 11 Years
      9 years, 4 months ago

Wickham is a great punt, but is he nailed to start?

Also, Baines and Fuchs are great but i don't see them as defenders i would play in every game (would you play Baines away at City?) and for that money i want a defender i comfortably play any game. Lei i expect to concede much more this year, i don't see Ranieri starting the season with defensive approach he finished last season.

    Foster, Jaku
    Terry, Kone, Friend, Wasilewski, 4m
    Mahrez, Eriksen, Tadic, Ayew, Capoue
    Kun, Zlatan, 6.5m

    0.5ITB

    Wasi plays GW1
    @GW2: Mahrez -> Hazard
    @GW3: Ayew -> Form Mid-Price Player (Ibe/Towns/Deul)
    @GW4: Upgrade 4m Def

    Who plays up front?
    High hopes for Carroll,
Gray looks like a potential Wilson,
    Wilson could be like Wilson,

    Thoughts
    Tadic -> Ward-Prowse + Carroll
    Tadic -> Feghouli + Austin/Long

Few teams around with ManCity defenders. Is this because of the uncertainties with Pep and his XI?

      Yes.

Also, I don't honestly expect them to be defensively solid until the second half of the season. Pep's usual tactics will be exposed fairly easily. Probably will adapt them/get the players working with it towards the end of the season

Starting to see some nice teams emerge for the first time tonight. Both with and without Ibra. It's weird like an ant colony figuring out the best way to do things. Or maybe create templates that fail!! It's so hard this year with so many overpriced players, new managers ...
