A huge name in US Fantasy Sports, FanDuel arrives on these shores with a game built specifically for a UK audience.

The game has been created from the ground up over the past 18 months, at times involving members of the Fantasy Football Scout community, who were part of a beta test during Euro 16.

FanDuel has launched today and we’re very proud to announce that we’ll be supporting the game throughout the new season, running tips and weekly articles to help guide those of you who get involved.

FanDuel will be hosting custom Fantasy Football Scout contests, including free entry options, and will also be devising tournaments over the course of the 2016/17 campaign.

What is FanDuel?

FanDuel should sit perfectly with the Fantasy Football Scout community.

The concept will be very familiar – you have £100 million to build a team of 11 players and you can enter this selection in as many of the available contests as you choose. You can, of course, create multiple teams and enter numerous contests to increase your chances of winning.

The player prices change week-to-week based on player performance and, as with many of these games, there’s real appeal in attempting to exploit value options within the player list.

That’s certainly what we’ll be trying to help you achieve with our Weekly Shop and dedicated FanDuel articles.

The contests allow you to tinker with your selection right up until kick-off, so if you’re able to monitor team sheets and react quickly to opportunities, these can sometimes offer an advantage.

For now squads for the Gameweek will be locked when the first match gets underway.

This single-deadline rule is soon to be addressed, though. Typically, squads will be locked as the kick-offs go by, so your players involved in the early fixture will be locked first, allowing you to continue to swap out the players in your starting XI who are due to play later.

There are various contest formats to enter and, while those with higher entry fees will typically offer the bigger prizes, there will be large pots available for the smaller entry fee contests, depending on the number of entrants.

Each week, there will always be at least one free entry contest for those looking to get involved.

Why Should I Play?

FanDuel ignored the option of importing their US game mechanics and instead invested in building something new and fresh.

Not only does this mean that the game is tailored to us as Fantasy Football managers, it also ensures that every player starts from scratch.

FanDuel begins as a level playing field.

You won’t be up against veteran players armed with proven methods and complex spreadsheets – even those who have played Daily Fantasy Sports for years will come into this game with little or no experience of the scoring.

That means that the Fantasy Football Scout community and other experienced Fantasy Football managers have the opportunity to become established and successful FanDuel players.

When you delve into the scoring system, you’ll see that it sits well with us all.

FanDuel use a rich variety of match actions, all devised from Opta data, to power their scoring.

Uniquely, clean sheets are only a scoring factor for goalkeepers.

Instead, all players are rewarded for tackles, clearances, blocks and interceptions. Those scoring methods obviously favour defenders, whilst ball-winning midfielders also come to the fore – a rarity for Fantasy Football.

Of course, our Members have access to a five-year archive of all the key data and we’ve already created custom tables to help FanDuel players with selection.

You can view the full FanDuel scoring matrix here.

Our short experience in the Beta over the summer told us that it’s a very well balanced scoring system; there is no single dominating statistic and FanDuel have reacted to feedback to tweak the scoring for the final release.

The game will have you considering players that you’ve never looked at before, building teams that look very different to traditional Fantasy Football lineups. That can only be a good thing.

How Do I Start?

You can register for a free account via this link.

When you sign up, enter the promocode “SCOUT” and FanDuel will refund your first paid entry fee, up to £10, as free entry credit if you don’t win cash

After that, you can begin creating your first lineup and then choose to enter any of the opening weekend’s contests.

There’s a free-for-all contest available in the lobby and we’ve already set up a Fantasy Football Scout contest that offers a total of £200 in prizes.

This costs just £1 to enter and is available for 230 entrants – the top 57 places will collect at least £2, with the winner earning £25 and runner-up collecting £15.

This week and on several occasions over the season we’ll be offering special contest options.

Look out for our full strategy guide to the game next week and also our regular Weekly Shop and FanDuel Focus articles over the course of the season.

Tried out a team that's a little less templatey...

    Foster (Jaku)
    Valencia, VVD, Soare (Naylor, Lenihan)
    Hazard, Mahrez, Martial, Tadic, Lamela
    Kun, Gray (Diomande)

Lamela is a great enabler for funds over Alli or Erik and could really kick on this year. Would have if he was nailed.

So Williams to Everton deal looks off? Damn would've been an easy choice at 5.0 for Everton defence.

A light read with nice graphs. (if not interested in reading too much then just have a look through the graphs, some are illuminating)

    http://www.goaldentimes.org/tale-europes-big-five-numbers-statistical-review-2015-16-season/

At the bottom they calculate the competitiveness index and figure that Ligue 1 is more competitive 🙄 but some justification arrives by way of not being about just winning the league but also securing the top positions. They do it with Balders-style stuff too for the mathematically inclined.

    Overall, a nice read.

How come Shaw has fallen out of most RMTs?

And why is hardly anyone going for Fabregas at £7.5m. If he even has an average season by his standards he's worth that price.

I think there are some doubts about Shaw's attacking returns.

Hazard scored 2 goals now everyone wants him instead.

I have both of those currently. And Fabregas.

Really don't understand this "coverage" notion. If Fabregas is doing his usual thing then he's a steal, having Hazard doesn't cover his returns.

Does anyone really know what the Man U backline or Chelsea midfield starting lineup will be ?

I prefer DDG as a way into Utd defence and other nailed 7.5 mids.

My premium defenders simply have to be 100% nailed and injury free otherwise no point having them

      Bottomed hard on previous page..
      __________

      Hey gang,

I am in two minds about FPL, and it is reflected in the below teams...

      Any advice?

      __________

      TEAM A [4-5-1]

      Foster (Jaku)
      Friend, McAuley, Pieters, Evans (Kone)
      Payet, Hazard, Ozil, Mahrez, Eriksen
      Aguero (Diamonde, Grabban)

The logic for this one was that over the season I can see that midfield hauling a lot of goals and assists (more than if I were to upgrade to Ibra and Gray/Austin in the FWD line) - around 700+ points combined, which is significantly more than what one more elite striker (Ibra) and a punty 6.5er (Gray/Austin/Long/Negredo) might bring in sacrificing those 2 or 3 elite mids. I am happy hitching my wagon to WBA defensively at first, and I can re-evaluate to other 4.5ers if need be. I'll be the first to admit it's not sterling back line but between Stoke, WBA, Boro and Sunderland I am relatively happy (for the first few GWs at least).

      __________

      TEAM B [3-4-3]

      Foster (Jaku)
      Terry, Evans, Valencia (Pieters, 4.5)
      Deulo, Hazard, Mahrez, Fischer/Gradel (Fletcher)
      Aguero, Austin, Ibra

The logic for this one is that I can see the back line offering a bit more stability at first with room to swap out Valencia for other 5.5ers in the future (or Shaw if he lights it up). Again, like the previous team, I am happy with WBA and Stoke cover from Evans and Pieters. The midfield of Deulo, Hazard and Mahrez is one I have been thinking about overnight and while it's not as potent as Team A, I feel it doesn't need too much tinkering either. I am undecided on Fischer and Gradel at the moment (I'll probably go for Fischer if this team is pursued since he isn't coming off an injury). Fletcher just needs to rotate for a couple of points on the good fixtures and his job is done. Aguero, Ibra and Austin are a primo strike force and I can swap out Austin if the likes of Gray or (dare-I-say-it) Negredo start off strong.

That said, what are your thoughts? I am very much in two minds here. Comments on the weaknesses and strengths of both teams would be very welcome as well.

      Kudos!

I wouldn't play 4-5-1 so that is Team A out the window

I would be very wary of Austin, I really think it is going to be Redmond/Long up front for Saints

Rest is good, wouldn't go for Valencia either as I'd be worried he wouldn't start some weeks

Powerhouse midfield in that 4-5-1, if I was going to limit focus up top would put some more money in defence - pick a 5.5 GK such as Cech and perhaps look for another 5/5.5 defender

        Agree on the Austin comment

Your logic behind team A is not far off track. I think you need another forward and test out the flexibility of a 3-5-2

My advice to you would be to just worry about your front 7, regardless if its 4 or 5 midfielders, 2 or 3 strikers.
Defense is crucial as well as you dont want to be wasting defensive transfers during the season

Just be careful of your team structure for future transfers, and don't be afraid to leave 0.5 itb

For instance I would not have three 9.5 mids, 2 is more than enough
Pick one in the 7.5-6.5 range

Thank you mate. I am really trying to lock in on a good assignment of funds to enable sideways moves at most. I don't want to have to scramble to re-jig or take hits. No hits this season would be great. I will constantly be tinkering with these two approaches so I daresay you'll all see a few more posts from me before GW1.

As I posted elsewhere, I have a theory that a four or five man back line and low midfield investment is the strongest way to start the season.

I've just taken the last four years worth of games and run them into tables, breaking down games into 38 blocks of 10 to simulate rounds, and totting up the distribution of teams scoring zero, one, or more than one goals.

Long story short, there doesn't appear to be a consistent story across the seasons. Even so, I'm eyeballing a consistency across the first four weeks of each season that falls away quite sharply into 4-8 (curiously, the same week of Aguero's hauls last two seasons).

I'm seeing this as a signal to run four or five defenders in the first four weeks, then move more towards attack. Obviously we all like three at the back round here, but thinking about defensive stability over attackers finding form might be an option.

If you're interested in the data, here it is: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1XYrJE0nZAcbk49rQewUUF1FRjFgdUQA_2qJ7yN2WUbM/edit?usp=sharing

Add to that, on average teams will get more clean sheets in the first four weeks than in the season overall; and much fewer in weeks 5-8.

Defenders get more PPM on the whole.

That said, when attackers are firing their ceiling is far higher & as a result, we'll typically get them in when their PPM is well above that of any defender.

        Example:

-A defender can *only* get 2 CS total vs. Hull this yr
-An attacker can score multiple goal / assists etc though

This game's been around for a long time & many diff formations have been tested but, on the whole the Top 10k play a 343 for the most part.

All true - what I'm saying is that I think defenders look as though they get nearly double the PPG over the first four games as they do over the second four, which is on top of the higher PPG you're already picking up on 😉

        Spot on Sparrer

I've always speculated this because I've seen it happen in other leagues such as MLS but never really gathered any hard data to back it up

What all of this ignores is that attacking assets have good runs and bad runs, the skill is to sell/bench during the bad runs and buy/play them during the good runs. The upside of catching that right an Ighalo/Ayew/Gylfi/Tadic/Ramsey/Giroud is huge ... and then there is the selection of the Captain each week

If you nail the above, the returns will blow any heavy hitting defence out of the water.

It absolutely categorically doesn't ignore that - my theory is that building attacking form takes a few weeks, whereas defences settle much faster. The suggestion is that teams keep more clean sheets in weeks 1-4, but in 5-8 the attacks start to show better returns. In a game where a clean sheet can get your defender 9 points, that's useful to know.

Of course it does, you can't really rotate a five man playing defence to take account of form ?

Also the reality is that there are no more than 6 or so teams that you would want a defender or keeper from ... a few wildcard teams each year pop their heads up but you can pick your clean sheet teams on one hand. Also two of the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea, Man U etc traditional have 2 high scoring defenders in the top 6 or 7 performing defenders and you are faced with doubling up

I speak from experience because I did exactly what you are suggesting in my first ever FPL season a few years ago, for exactly the reasons you suggest, and it was a disaster as I watched a load of mids clocking up 15 points a game .... and if you can catch those mids most weeks then you are on to a winner

Like you I compared the potential points a premium defender would get if you played him every week and compared that with the averaged retuned of an equivalent midfielder, but ignoring the fact that I could drop or sell the mid at the first sniff of a bad spell and draft in a scoring mid - you simply can not do that with a playing 5 man defence so your potential maximum return is always topped out, whereas you can chop and change your mids to take advantage of the good runs they go on

Not every week - I'm just talking early doors. Gameweeks 1-4.

I feel you are over complicating it and playing too safe so not worth it imv for four weeks and having an unbalanced team.

                Just play the fixtures.

Decent goalie, two premium defenders, then punt away elsewhere trying to line up weak teams playing (preferably away from home) against your attacking assets.

In a nut shell, your first squad should be all about the fixtures with a few Fixture Proof picks until some form settles down

Ok @ Cheese and @ Champ. Listened to the two 6.5 forward theory . Like it especially with 5 decent mids. As ye said you can only play 7 anyway and can transfer one of the 6.5 for fixtures if needed. Looks like an early WC though I have 10 homers and Ayew away as it stands for GW1
      What ye think?

      Valdes Foster
      Funes VVD Azp Rose Smith

Carrol and Wilson are the other obvious ones but GW1 fixtures not great. Hopefully others emerge to help this strategy. Ideally want a 6.5 that has a nice run of fixtures can't see one at the start of the season.

Overall it looks good. Ivan back in training so should be ok always seems to have a goal or two in him at the start of the season. Cedric in doubt due to Pied. Byram not nailed either. And is Negredo ahead of Rhodes?Even if he is his last two seasons have been very poor.

In fact it may be worse than that. It looks like they had to shuffle the defence to cater for the fact he wasn't very good.

Just how I read it from where the various defenders played last season

He was only signed in January, the defence was reshuffled because age, sadly, caught up with Michael Duff.

He's definitely third choice CB behind Keane and Mee. However, keep an eye on transfer news regarding Keane, Leicester were after him earlier in the transfer window (and may still be) and there were reports Everton were interested with the possible departure of Stones. If Keane goes, Tarkowski will be in.
Also if Stephen Ward at LB doesn't get over his injury before the season starts and Burnley don't sign anyone else, it's likely that Ben Mee will be moved to LB with Tarkowski moving into the CB slot. Certainly no guarantee of playing time but not a bad option if you're after a 4.0 defender to complete your squad.

Good going foward, suspect defensively. Behind Matt Lowton in the pecking order at RB. Also Burnley rumoured to be getting Flannagan on loan from Liverpool and I suspect he will be in the RB slot moving Darikwa further down. Best to avoid.

Of course it all depends who sits in the midfield. It is a bit of a risk if one of the other big name strikers goes off, hard to re-shuffle the pack to get them in without pulling the WC or losing 8-12 points in trades. Gray's opening fixtures aren't flash either.

Don't want a RMT, just sharing some thoughts:

      Forster Mannone
      Friend Valencia Azpilicueta McAuely Paredes
Hazard Fischer Ayez (or Tadic) Townsend Phillips
      Aguero Ibrahimovic Wilson

It's very much a 5-8 week team until the first WC. GKs rotate perfectly, McAuley and Friend rotate perfectly, play the two heavy hitters each week. Up front will switch between Wilson and Phillips as they rotate perfectly. The first iteration of many that I've been happy with!

Why stones over Mori? With all this transfer drama, I'd imagine he's a bit unsettled, plus mori is more a goal threat as a defender.

You'll find most folk are anticipating him moving to City and starting the season, for a 5.0 priced defender from a championship contender he'd be a bargain!

      Any advice?

      Heaton [Valdes]
      Friend, Stones, Valencia [McAuley, Wasilewski]
      Hazard, Mkhitaryan, Redmond, Fischer [Ibe]
      Ibrahimovic, Aguero, Gray

So Jakupovic then. Seen him in quite a few drafts But I assume Hull are looking for another keeper?

Admittedly they must be looking for a few players

Why? Typically starting keepers in rubbish teams do OK
