Having already brought in Ilkay Gundogan, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Nolito in this transfer window, Man City’s summer recruitment drive under new boss Pep Guardiola continued on Tuesday with the signing of Schalke 04 attacker Leroy Sane for a reported £37 million.

The 20-year-old put pen to paper on a five-year deal at the Etihad, and speaking to the club’s official website about the move, said the opportunity to work with Guardiola was one of the key factors in making the move to Manchester:

“One of the reasons I decided to join City was Pep Guardiola; he convinced me to come here and that I can continue to progress. I know I will learn a lot under him and now I can take the next step in my career. I followed Pep at Barcelona and at Bayern where he achieved a lot and worked really well with young players. I think he can make me a more complete player. I think I will need a bit of time to start with because it’s another league and there’s a different style of play but I think I can adapt very quickly.”

The History

Sane spent his formative years at SG Wattenscheid 09 before joining Schalke at the age of nine. After a couple of seasons at Bayer Leverkusen he returned to Schalke’s academy as a 16-year-old, and would go on to make his Bundesliga debut for Die Konigsblauen against Stuttgart in April 2014.

The 2014/15 season saw Sane gain further first-team opportunities, scoring three goals and registering an assist in 13 league matches, while he netted on his Champions League debut in a last 16 tie at Real Madrid, which Schalke won 4-3.

Last season, Sane established himself as a regular starter, making 33 league appearances in total, scoring eight goals and racking up six assists.

Sane represented his country at Under 19 and Under 21 level, scoring nine goals in 17 matches, before making his senior debut as a substitute in a 2-0 friendly defeat to France last November. He was a member of Germany’s squad that reached the semi-finals of Euro 2016, but only made one appearance – playing 11 minutes as a substitute against hosts France.

The Prospects

While Guardiola was already able to call upon the likes of Kevin de Bruyne, David Silva, Nolito and Raheem Sterling for the attacking midfield positions, the Spaniard was quick to talk up Sane’s potential after concluding the deal to bring him to the Etihad:

“He has great technical ability, is comfortable on the ball and there is much to admire about the way he plays football. He is fast, enjoys creating chances for others, works hard for the team and scores goals, too. He also has a very positive attitude and will fit in well with our squad. At 20, he is still developing as a player but he is already a member of the German national side and I think he will be a fantastic asset to our club.”

If, as expected, Guardiola favours a 4-2-3-1 or even a 4-3-3 formation, Sane looks set to compete primarily with De Bruyne, Silva, Nolito and Sterling for a starting berth, with the latter’s playing time appearing the most at threat given Sane shares many of the same characteristics.

The German international is versatile enough to feature on either flank, in the number ten role or even as a false nine, although he played the majority of his football on the right wing last season. Sane’s arrival certainly means the likes of Samir Nasri and Jesus Navas now look surplus to requirements as the new manager makes him stamp on the final third.

Sane possesses explosive pace, and has strong technical ability, with dribbling, in particular, a major strength. His decision making in the final third should only improve with experience, although the physical nature of the Premier League could at first be a slight challenge for the 20-year-old, given his wiry physique.

The German’s underlying statistics from last season illustrate he isn’t much of a playmaker, only registering a key pass every 82.6 minutes, worse than De Bruyne (24.7), Silva (26.9), Nolito (41.2) and Sterling (55.1).

Sane’s goal threat was much more impressive, producing a goal attempt every 34 minutes, which was stronger than Sterling (37.1), De Bruyne (40.9) and Silva (62.1) last term, although fellow new arrival Nolito did lead the way, averaging a shot every 30.5 minutes for Celta Vigo.

It’s expected that Sane will be available for around 8.0 or 8.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), given Silva and Nolito have been handed 9.0 price tags and Sterling sets you back 8.0. The new boy should be classified as a midfielder, considering his appearances as a striker have been few and far between.

Given Sane’s relative inexperience at the highest level, there has to be question marks over whether he can immediately command a regular starting berth until he acclimatises to life in England. As was the case with Sterling’s arrival last summer, City look to have bought potential in the young German, and while his undoubted quality should see him impress at times this season, consistency could be an issue.

Sane’s acquisition merely strengthens Guardiola’s hand in attacking midfield and could lead to greater rotation over the campaign. This could allow the City boss a chance to manage Silva’s minutes – the Spaniard was limited to just 22 starts last term and continues to be hampered by hamstring and ankle concerns.

For now, De Bruyne remains our preferred option from the City midfield, then, but with the Belgian only returning to pre-season training this week following his Euro 2016 exertions, there’s perhaps a chance even he could be rotated during the opening three Gameweeks as he builds up his match fitness. City also face two Champions League qualifiers this month.

Looking at the schedule, City’s opening fixtures (SUN, sto, WHM, mun, BOU, swa) are generally pretty favourable, with the plum home fixtures against Sunderland and Bournemouth in particular offering the temptation to double up on their attack.

Although City’s midfield clearly has the potential to offer us at least one reliable big-hitter, with chopping and changing potentially on the cards, many may initially opt for Aguero alone in their opening 15-man squads until we get a better idea of the new manager’s intentions.

At present, there’s no shortage of in-form premium midfielders as alternatives, with the likes of Eden Hazard, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Roberto Firmino and Riyad Mahrez all amongst the goals in pre-season already.

What are people's thought's on Kolorov?

    Will he play this season?

I always thought the RB's and LB's in Guardiola's teams played really high up the pitch and got loads of assists.

          Yeh, he's featured a lot.

          I reckon City could play:

          ------------Hart
          -Sagna Ota Stones
          Yaya Dinho Kolarov
          ----KDB Silva Nolito
          -------------Kun

Which then transitions into a back 4 if the initial full press is unsuccessful. Nothing to back this up mind you. 😛

I wouldn't put Valencia in the same category as Kolarov tbh. Valencia has been punting his crosses into the shins of defenders for years. One decent game against Gala doesn't show the norm.

Any love for Viktor Fischer? Got him in my current draft, but welcome views from any Boro fans - given competition from Adamoah, Rhodes and Negredo for the goals...

I've had him in my draft up until today when I upgraded to Redmond.

I'm not a big fan of Fischer tho, he was poor last season and I'm not sure if he will start, or keep his place, but he could be worth a punt.

He played a few games at the tail end of last season.

Downgrade Stones. Maybe turn Fischer into a £4.5m bench fodder. Then blow the savings on hookers and coke.

Yeah, my point isn't really why are you not picking Carrol specifically, using him more as an example. just saying why are most so intent on Negredo given the team he plays for and his history in the PL, or Gray who has no PL history or Wilson who has been it for months.

Eriksen bad early fixtures, Kane the same and no pre-season, Carroll already tweaked an injury, Negredo still to get some minutes under his belt, Defoe injured, Austin not flavoured and sharing duties with Long... many good reasons. But... here's you're chance to get down differentials Timpy.

Fixtures mean little in my opinion, the early season is a minefield and look at the results that came out of the first few GW's least year.

In GW1 for example: Chelsea couldn't beat Swansea at home, Villa won at home, Arsenal lost to West Ham at home, West Brom conceded 3, Stoke conceded, NONE of the newly promoted teams won or kept clean sheets. The ONLY team to win by more 1 goal and keep a clean sheet was Man City but I haven't seen any man City defender (bar potentially Stones) in any teams this year or many teams with any City mid/att bar Aguero.

My point isn't 'Why are you not picking Carroll' it is why are people picking Negredo and Gray continuously, Friend and Pieters and Foster and Shaw etc etc I am just struggling to be interested/excited by any of the template teams.

Fixtures Shmixtures. Look at the first 3 GW's last year. How many times do we all have points sitting on our bench because we picked the GK/DEF with the 'better' fixtures.

Not sure if boredom is the compelling case, but your larger point about scout board team conformity is valid. There are a lot of players to choose from, and I bet if we had a percent player selected stat of only scout board member teams, the distribution would be wildly disproportionate.

Eloquently put, that is exactly my point - the disproportion without merit for some players. Would be interesting to see the 'teams selected by %' from the discussions and RMT's on here.

Still Ramirez as things stand but he hasn't had much game time in pre-season yet. Meanwhile Fischer looked excellent against Villa, picking up a goal and an assist from the left wing.

We play Udinese tonight and Real Sociedad on Saturday, so we 'll know more after those two games.

Bit of a differential, on pens and possibly FKs? could be playing up high just behind ibra

Ibra wasn't on the pitch, and Ibra is a much better pen taker than Rooney.

Mourinho loves him and has already made the point of playing him in the 'hole' with Ibra in front of him Martial on the left and Mhki on the right and him still being captain game time won't be an issue.

All or nothing season for Rooney club and country and I as a United and Mourinho fan am ready to ride the wave.

I do. It's madness to write him off. People saying he's rubbish...he's just not. Mourinho is going to get some of that old Rooney back, and a player of his finishing ability playing in that position for this team...is going to get goals. A little bit of form and he'll be flying

        Foster (Jaku)
Funes Mori / Moreno / Van Aanholt (Pieters, 4.0)

Valencia is a risky pick, Rooney is a good one if he keeps the penalties, but Ibra might take them, I prefer Deulofeu to Townsend, but looks good otherwise.

            Thanks,

Mourinho doesn't do rotation in the Prem so if he plays he stays if not easy change up to Lukey Shaw.

Not convinced with the Delofeu train.. seems he has played false 9 in Rom's absence which is why he's so well talked up and after Townsends heroic end to last season I can't part with him.

            Thanks,

Mourinho and premier league rotation aren't things that go together!
Will learn a lot from CS about his preferred teams but after the game he had against Gala I cant imagine he will drop him.

Easy switch to Shaw - for me TFM would play every week but I don't manage my FF team well never mind the biggest club in the world!

Same front 8 as mine except I have Firmino instead of Eriksen - but that one is just a coin toss...still undecided - and a 5.5 instead of Townsend. Would need to see CPL clicking before considering their players. Would you not prefer an extra 0.5 in defence somewhere? I would try and get CHE defensive coverage from the start.

How's it looking after the 4297680th tinker?

        Planning on wildcarding after GW3

        Courtious-4.0
        Morgan-Friend-Fernandez-Evans-4.0
        Hazard-Mahrez-Mkhi-Tadic-Capoue
        Aguero-Wilson-Gray

The defence rotates very well for the first 3
I'd like the Scout community's view on a few questions.
        1) How is the Tadic pick?
        2) How likely is De Bruyne to start in GW1
        3) Wilson plays United, West Ham and Palace in the first 3? Should I consider other 6.5 options. Please enlighten me on the Austin/Long and Rhodes/Negredo situation

          3) Good fixtures imo for Wilson. My favourite 6.5m option.

We have almost the same team and I find Tadic the best pick at 7.5m at the moment. I chose not to double up on City, as KdB is a doubt for gw1 and I don't know how they will line up yet. You should read the post Ludo had on budget strikers yesterday.

        Foster, Jakupovic
        Shaw, Williams, Gabriel, Friend, Evans
        Mahrez, Alli, Payet, Gradel, Fischer
        Aguero, Lukaku, Long

Unsure which 5 defender to use out of Williams, Gabriel, Stones & Morgan. All depends on transfers I guess..
