Having already brought in Ilkay Gundogan, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Nolito in this transfer window, Man City’s summer recruitment drive under new boss Pep Guardiola continued on Tuesday with the signing of Schalke 04 attacker Leroy Sane for a reported Β£37 million.

The 20-year-old put pen to paper on a five-year deal at the Etihad, and speaking to the club’s official website about the move, said the opportunity to work with Guardiola was one of the key factors in making the move to Manchester:

“One of the reasons I decided to join City was Pep Guardiola; he convinced me to come here and that I can continue to progress. I know I will learn a lot under him and now I can take the next step in my career. I followed Pep at Barcelona and at Bayern where he achieved a lot and worked really well with young players. I think he can make me a more complete player. I think I will need a bit of time to start with because it’s another league and there’s a different style of play but I think I can adapt very quickly.”

The History

Sane spent his formative years at SG Wattenscheid 09 before joining Schalke at the age of nine. After a couple of seasons at Bayer Leverkusen he returned to Schalke’s academy as a 16-year-old, and would go on to make his Bundesliga debut for Die Konigsblauen against Stuttgart in April 2014.

The 2014/15 season saw Sane gain further first-team opportunities, scoring three goals and registering an assist in 13 league matches, while he netted on his Champions League debut in a last 16 tie at Real Madrid, which Schalke won 4-3.

Last season, Sane established himself as a regular starter, making 33 league appearances in total, scoring eight goals and racking up six assists.

Sane represented his country at Under 19 and Under 21 level, scoring nine goals in 17 matches, before making his senior debut as a substitute in a 2-0 friendly defeat to France last November. He was a member of Germany’s squad that reached the semi-finals of Euro 2016, but only made one appearance – playing 11 minutes as a substitute against hosts France.

The Prospects

While Guardiola was already able to call upon the likes of Kevin de Bruyne, David Silva, Nolito and Raheem Sterling for the attacking midfield positions, the Spaniard was quick to talk up Sane’s potential after concluding the deal to bring him to the Etihad:

β€œHe has great technical ability, is comfortable on the ball and there is much to admire about the way he plays football. He is fast, enjoys creating chances for others, works hard for the team and scores goals, too. He also has a very positive attitude and will fit in well with our squad. At 20, he is still developing as a player but he is already a member of the German national side and I think he will be a fantastic asset to our club.”

If, as expected, Guardiola favours a 4-2-3-1 or even a 4-3-3 formation, Sane looks set to compete primarily with De Bruyne, Silva, Nolito and Sterling for a starting berth, with the latter’s playing time appearing the most at threat given Sane shares many of the same characteristics.

The German international is versatile enough to feature on either flank, in the number ten role or even as a false nine, although he played the majority of his football on the right wing last season. Sane’s arrival certainly means the likes of Samir Nasri and Jesus Navas now look surplus to requirements as the new manager makes him stamp on the final third.

Sane possesses explosive pace, and has strong technical ability, with dribbling, in particular, a major strength. His decision making in the final third should only improve with experience, although the physical nature of the Premier League could at first be a slight challenge for the 20-year-old, given his wiry physique.

The German’s underlying statistics from last season illustrate he isn’t much of a playmaker, only registering a key pass every 82.6 minutes, worse than De Bruyne (24.7), Silva (26.9), Nolito (41.2) and Sterling (55.1).

Sane’s goal threat was much more impressive, producing a goal attempt every 34 minutes, which was stronger than Sterling (37.1), De Bruyne (40.9) and Silva (62.1) last term, although fellow new arrival Nolito did lead the way, averaging a shot every 30.5 minutes for Celta Vigo.

It’s expected that Sane will be available for around 8.0 or 8.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), given Silva and Nolito have been handed 9.0 price tags and Sterling sets you back 8.0. The new boy should be classified as a midfielder, considering his appearances as a striker have been few and far between.

Given Sane’s relative inexperience at the highest level, there has to be question marks over whether he can immediately command a regular starting berth until he acclimatises to life in England. As was the case with Sterling’s arrival last summer, City look to have bought potential in the young German, and while his undoubted quality should see him impress at times this season, consistency could be an issue.

Sane’s acquisition merely strengthens Guardiola’s hand in attacking midfield and could lead to greater rotation over the campaign. This could allow the City boss a chance to manage Silva’s minutes – the Spaniard was limited to just 22 starts last term and continues to be hampered by hamstring and ankle concerns.

For now, De Bruyne remains our preferred option from the City midfield, then, but with the Belgian only returning to pre-season training this week following his Euro 2016 exertions, there’s perhaps a chance even he could be rotated during the opening three Gameweeks as he builds up his match fitness. City also face two Champions League qualifiers this month.

Looking at the schedule, City’s opening fixtures (SUN, sto, WHM, mun, BOU, swa) are generally pretty favourable, with the plum home fixtures against Sunderland and Bournemouth in particular offering the temptation to double up on their attack.

Although City’s midfield clearly has the potential to offer us at least one reliable big-hitter, with chopping and changing potentially on the cards, many may initially opt for Aguero alone in their opening 15-man squads until we get a better idea of the new manager’s intentions.

At present, there’s no shortage of in-form premium midfielders as alternatives, with the likes of Eden Hazard, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Roberto Firmino and Riyad Mahrez all amongst the goals in pre-season already.

New on here....usually my first drafts do well in first few weeks and I'm left telling anyone who'll listen "I was gonna have him in my team" after someone 5.5 bangs a hattrick....anyways please RMT

    Foster (Jaku)
    Azpil/vvd/Shaw (paredes/McCauley)
    Mkhi/KDB/lamela/Fischer/Ayew
    Kun/long (gray)

Thinking to downgrade Fischer to 4.5 and use the extra mil for Cech instead of foster, also considering negredo instead of gray but generally happy with that team for 3-5 game weeks using my free transfers as n when....thoughts?

Don't waste money on Cech. Arsenal have a lot of injury worries at the back currently, could be used to upgrade Ayew to Firmino and capitalise on that weakened Arsenal defense.

Lots of people seem to be planning an early (circa GW3) wildcard. If that's you, are you intending to use the second wildcard a bit earlier than last year or are you targeting the DGWs again and trusting yourself to navigate 30-odd gameweeks between wildcards?

Ayew - His first two fixtures are great, after that he's easily downgrade-able to the next best bandwagon.

Redmond - This chat from Puel on him operating best as a striker gives me a proper chub on. Some untapped potential there, poor away fixtures i'll admit but those home games can be pretty fruitful.

Gray - I've been sucked in on this one, Swansea and Liverpool at home are much nicer fixtures than folks think. Swansea had one clean sheet way from home last year and haven't improved at all, Liverpool without Sakho and maybe Matip will probably have to play Lovren and Klavan, also Milner at left-back. I can see goals in the opening two, then on to the next one like Ayew.

(My ultimate plan is to save two transfers until the International Break, then make 4 transfers for -8 and somewhat restructure my team depending on what i've seen, rather than wildcarding, that's why the first two fixtures mean so much to me)

Ayew - If he stays at Swansea he looks to be their starting forward. First two fixtures too nice to ignore

Tadic - Playing in the hole I think he will shine. On all set pieces too. I think 10+ goals and 15+ assists is realistic and I'll take that all day from a 7.5 player.

Gray - Following the herd on this one; don't know much about him but I like his first couple of fixtures. If Burnley are to get any goals I think he has a great shout of playing a major part in them (unlike, imo, the two Southampton strikers where Redmond/Tadic/Long/Austin just seems like a cluster as to where the points will be coming from on goals scored)

Firminio or Mane + Erikson +Gray -LIV are going to score big, not worried about their start etc & these 2 will be involved in everything...again easy at 8.5/9m to replace if not firing

Erikson-Spurs fixtures look decent for quite a few weeks so most likely will just leave him in- he will always score consistently

Gray just scores & scores & feel he will do the same in PREM, not worried if he is a flat track bully etc-easily replaced if bombs but has 4/6 home games, not the easiest but worth a chance imo, should be on PENS to....

Your defence is very weak - Aina and Wimmer are very unlikely to start - don't be dazzled by a few pre-season games for big sides - and to be fair Lenihan has made only one Championship appearance for Hull City, so regardless of their injury woes, I'd be very surprised if he brought you any joy. In short, spend that 1M asap and consider downgrading Sanchez for now too.

Isn't it possible that if a Dembele correlation does exist for Kane/Alli, Spurs could change their tactics this season to address it?

If we all know that Alli and Kane had less success with Dembele missing, I'd say there's a decent chance that Pochettino knows too. That said, we all waited for Martinez to strengthen Everton's defence and are still waiting for Wenger to sign a centre back and centre forward, so who knows?!

Ha! Exactly - he's better and more in touch than Martinez, hence he must have a plan B for Dembele's absence. Wanyama and Dier partnership should be good news for Alli - seriously considering him for 3rd midfield berth.

Yes, but not completely devoid, just saw this from the match report:

Wanyama showed great anticipation and strength to win the ball in midfield following Neto's goal kick and he sent it forward for Lamela, who tucked the ball into the far bottom corner from left-of-centre.

              It was a basic pass.

He didn't show, and hasn't shown in his time at Southampton, an ability to transition the play.

We lost this when Cazorla got injured last year, and it hampered the whole team.

Every Arsenal fans prediction varies slightly.

                  I think:

                  -------------------Cech
                  Bellerin Gabriel Kos Monreal
                  -----------Xhaka Ramsey
                  ------Cazorla Ozil Sanchez
                  -----------------Giroud

See for me Cazorla no longer has the legs for a wide position, I understand having the Bellerin overlap helps but like you said every Arsenal fan varies. I'd probably switch Ramsey and Cazorla. I'd love Ox to prove himself for a wide position though too.

If you swap Cazorla and Ramsey round that would be the more likely starting 11 with everyone fit I think.

Possibly so, and maybe that's why we're looking for a winger. (if anything in the press is true.)

But I honestly believe Xhaka was bought in part to get the best from Ramsey.

I think Janssen could leave a lot of FPL players underwhelmed. Spurs play a certain way, so apart from a Kane injury or the odd post-Champions League game against bottom-half Premier League opposition, I don't see him playing more often than Trippier, Mason, Wimmer etc.

My tactic for squad selection... remove as much subjectively from the equation as possible. Teams you support, avoid those players, as firstly if they do well, the team wins and you're happy anyway.
As a Liverpool fan I struggled for years, picking my fav players and holding them for so long in vain (including Balotelli for 3 months) I would eventually give up on the season. 18 months ago I changed from this tactic and saw dramatic improvements (mostly in my cash leagues) resulting in an 11th OR last year.

Best way to avoid bias is to use stats models predictors. typically from people who do research for the betting companies. These highlight how the squads are predicted to do, without the betting bias clubs like Utd (down to huge fan base). and than balance your squad to represent. Take punts on the more cost effective solutions with history or OOP such as Redmond (Deployed as a striker) and you have your squad.

Because Mustafi breaks the defensive line with an aggressive defensive style, whereas Abdennour is best in a deeper structured system.

Presuming Conte and Chelsea keep doing what they have done in the past, I think he fits your style.
