Southampton manager Claude Puel boosted his defensive options earlier this week with the signing of Jeremy Pied from Nice on a free transfer.

The versatile 27-year-old, who is comfortable in either full-back position and in midfield, penned a two-year contract at St Mary’s, and speaking to the club’s official website, explained how Puel’s presence at Southampton was the key reason behind making the move to England:

“It was an important factor because I know him and he knows me. I know that he knows my quality so it’s up to me to repay the faith that he and the club has shown in me out on the pitch. Claude is the manager who gave me my big break in Ligue 1 in France when I was with Lyon, which was an important period in my career. Then we worked together once more at OGC Nice, where I continued my progression and enjoyed a great season last year.”

The History

Born in Grenoble, France, Pied spent his entire youth career at Lyon before moving on loan to Ligue 2 side Metz for the 2009/10 season, where he produced four goals and six assists in 37 league outings.

After returning to Lyon, he made his league debut for the club against Monaco in August 2010, and played a further 24 league matches in the 2010/11 campaign, scoring three goals and laying on as many assists. He struggled for minutes during the 2011/12 season, though, making just 14 league appearances, claiming one goal and an assist.

In August 2012, Pied completed a €3 million move to Nice, and he chalked up 48 league appearances over the following two seasons, scoring once and providing five assists, playing predominantly as a right winger.

Pied spent the 2014/15 campaign on loan to fellow Ligue 1 outfit Guingamp, where he again primarily featured as a winger, helping him register two goals and eight assists in 30 league matches.

He returned to Nice last season, and under the stewardship of Puel, spent the majority of the campaign playing at right-back for pretty much the first time in his career, claiming three assists from 33 league appearances, although it’s worth noting he did pick up 10 yellow cards.

Pied has represented France at Under 19, Under 20 and Under 21 levels, scoring two goals in 19 matches, but has yet to feature for the senior side.

The Prospects

Bearing in mind that Pied having worked with Puel at both Lyon and Nice, he’ll be hoping to nail down a regular starting berth at right-back at the expense of Cedric Soares and Cuco Martina.

Discussing his latest new arrival, the Saints boss reckons that Pied and Soares are very similar in style:

”Jérémy Pied is a good player, in the profile of Cédric Soares, with good technique and good quality of course. He can give assists and he is good in defence.”

Puel has operated with a back four during pre-season, so it’s likely that Ryan Bertrand, Virgil van Dijk and Jose Fonte will all remain regular starters for Saints, although from a Fantasy perspective, the fact they’re all priced at 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) does diminish their appeal somewhat.

With both Pied and Soares coming in at 5.0 in FPL, and Martina at 4.5, Fantasy managers will be hoping that one of the trio nails down the starting spot at right-back to hand us a cheaper route into the Saints rearguard.

Looking at the underlying statistics of the trio last season, Pied carried a greater attacking threat, registering a shot every 134.1 minutes, compared to every 197.1 minutes for Soares and every 361.3 minutes for Martina. Soares did shine in terms of creativity, though, averaging a key pass every 75.8 minutes, better than both Pied (89.7) and Martina (90.3).

Pied was also the most impressive from a defensive standpoint, averaging a successful tackle every 24.9 minutes, better than both Soares (27.8) and Martina (29.3), and also led the way for interceptions, averaging one every 29 minutes, compared to Soares (36.5) and Martina (45.2).

The former Nice defender looks to have the edge statistically, then, but with just over a week to go until the start of the season, we’re unlikely to know Puel’s first-choice until he names his side to face Watford in Gameweek 1.

There’s also the fact Southampton will have to juggle their domestic campaign with the Europa League this season, so Puel may choose to rotate at right-back, depriving us of a budget-friendly St Mary’s defender.

The uncertainty is unfortunate from a Fantasy perspective given Saints have three favourable home fixtures (WAT, SUN, SWA) during the opening five Gameweeks, while they’ve only conceded once in their four pre-season matches thus far.

At this stage then, it’s hard to look past Van Dijk as the strongest option from the Southampton backline, given his ability to provide Fantasy points at either end of the pitch and propensity for collecting bonus points.

The right-back berth is clearly worth monitoring, though. Pied’s history of playing as a winger means he’s comfortable in the final third, whilst a familiarity with Puel’s approach could yet see him emerge as a viable option for our five-man backlines.

Mandanda - Ligue 1 GK of the season, Marseille's player of the season, understudy to Lloris for France, highly regarded and 31 years old, chose Palace over Chelsea.

That all sounds like a 1st choice GK to me.

The presence of Hennessey put me off until I did some research. But it looks to me like Mandanda should have the spot.

The only players im completely sold on so far are:

Aguero, Hazard, Gray, Jaku, Simpson, Courtois, Mahrez

    Thats pretty much it.

    Questions over:

    A. Martial, Mkhi, Ibra, Rooney
    B. Sanchez, Giroud, Ozil, Wallcott
    C. Coutinho, Firmino, Studge, Mane
    D. 4.5s Def

I hope someone helps a brother out

Ibra the obvious and expensive choice, Rooney a neat differential. Not convince by the other two's pre-season form thus far and there's more competition for midfield places in my FPL team.

Also, Ozil + Firmino + whoever rotates.

Nobody knows. What I've read on some sites is that özil and giroud won't play the first GW. Sanchez will most probably come of the bench.

      In decreasing order :

      Ibra Martial Rooney Mkhi

      Sanchez Özil Giroud Walcott

Firmino Mane and don't even think of getting the other two.

Friend/Souare/Evans/Pieters/McAuley/Francis these seem the best to me. See according to the rotation

Want to punt on double Leicester for GW1.. Bar Aguero I don't see any better options than Vardy.. At a price where he's easy to upgrade or downgrade I think..

Not bothered on Liverpool, they'll lose to nil GW1 anyway 😉

Chelsea.. Ideally I'd like Hazard but want Martial and not sure I can find the extra cash anywhere to get him.. Using the cash to double up on their defence is my plan as can see them doing well at the back.

        Cheers 🙂

I like it. At 6 mil and reclassified as a mid, Bojan could be a cheeky punt. Bolasie never seems to deliver when I've owned him.
Vardy a great captain option in GW1.

Yeah Bolasie's a weird one.. Has never done it for me either but at 6.0 and likely to be playing right up in support of the striker.. He's exploded before and think he has the potential/fixtures to do it again.

In fairness, if Bolasie doesn't start well, you'll find a standout pick emerge for 6 mil or considerably less.
I really think Bojan is great value if he stays fit.

Swansea's away defence is garbage and Liverpool's defence as a whole is usually garbage, especially with Mignolet who could let anything in. Chelsea will be tough for him but after that things should be good again.

    Azpi/Shaw/Friend/Pieters/4.0

    Hazard/Mhki/Siggy/Redmond/4.5

I can't really see where I want to spend the money at the moment and don't want to spend it for the sake of spending.

Allows me to hop off Siggy to potentially Eriksen/Firmino etc. or Hazard/Mhiki to KDB. Or indeed upgrade Lukaku if needs be.

Keeping the money if there's nobody you want to upgrade is fine. It's the idea of insisting that you have a minimum amount itb that's a dodgy strategy, I think. I'd sooner have the extra money in play now rather than put myself at a disadvantage by cordoning off funds for eventualities that may/may not occur later.

If a player was there I'd happily use all of the budget. There isn't any obvious upgrade I'd be content with.

For example I think Redmond is under priced, and would still have considered him at 6.5/7.0.

I am monitoring the situation of Benteke. He could be an excellent pick at 7.5 if spearheading an attack like he did at Villa.

If I were to move for Kane/Ibra I'd sacrifice Lukaku. I'm content with owning Mhiki instead of Ibra, unless he bags a brace in the first game. Prefer to have a cheaper 3rd striker spot to hop on/hop off the inform player in that bracket.

But yes, a slight concern but happy enough with the team at present.

Mhiki to Eriksen/Firmino/Coutinho would generate said funds. Or indeed Hazard could be replaced. I don't feel having Kun/Ibra plus two premium mids (9.5+) is the right approach.

Time will tell I suppose. Worst case I wildcard to get in the big hitters, but I'll likely wildcard early anyway barring some miracle that I have picked the best squad available.

Rate my team out of 10 per position?

    Courtois / Jaku
Shaw / Friend / Kaboul / Williams / Stones (subject to change if transfers don't go through)
    Hazard / Deulofeu / Ayew / Redmond / Watmore
    Kun / Ibra / Wilson

Plan is that most of them midfielders have scope to raise in value and all have a good chance of playing number 10 or higher if their clubs don't sign some strikers.

That's the big problem. It's either downgrade Kun to Kane or Zlatan to Lukaku to have that balance. I hate having bench fodder players but I may have to accommodate one in defence and midfield this season...

It's a statistical fact. On average, EL teams that qualify through league position finish 2.8 places lower in the PL that season. That equates to around 9 points less typically.

Occasionally teams undershoot the trend of course and sometimes they do even worse. But that's the average and it makes EL teams less attractive as a result.

CNN above is also right. Often teams playing EL qualifiers advance pre-season a bit and they also have competitive games under their belt when the PL begins. They quite often start well as a result. But over the season it catches up.

People saying my team with Kun/Ibra/Kane is too risky because it makes my midfield too light. I think my team is safer than all of yours. Why?

Well the biggest damage is done by highly owned players and captains.

Kun for captain option is the reason we all pick him.
Ibra at 34% ownership and rising is obviously a big risk to go without
Kane is the interesting one. 17% ownership isn't huge but he is by far the standout captain Gw2 when he plays CPL, so he can potentially do a lot of damage to OR there. Kun has gw 2 sanchwiched by CL qualifiers so could have limited game time.

I still have Hazard in mids and I think it's quite unlikely that another big hitter will become a must have after 1 or 2 GWs. I can pretty easily get one in if's absolutely necessary as I should have 2 FT heading into gw3.

Now this is playing it safe 😎

Kane best option of captain week 2? Against a Townsend inspired palace? Never.

Hazard v Watford. Or better yet. Payet at home to the cherries.

        😆

Hazard away to Watford without penalties ain't a better captain than Kane home to Palace imo. Payet is an interesting one. Thing with him though is very risky to start being unlikely to start gw 1 and it's not really a good idea imo to plan transfers for after 1 gw. I'm still not sure he's a better option than Kane anyway.

I just think spurs will start slow this year and can't see harry coming out of the blocks firing. Key players for palace have had a much bigger pre season. That will be a tough game.

Just the standard one 4.5 mid Here's the draft

        Foster
        Valencia, Gabriel, Friend
        Hazard, Deulofeu, Redmond, Ramirez
        Aguero, Ibrahimovic, Kane

        Jaku, Capoue, Evans, Lenihan

Gabriel might be Williams if he goes to EVE/any other 5.0
Lenihan 4.0 i know not ideal but i think my defence is strong enough to carry a 4.0 fodder to maximise budget.

If Valencia, Gabriel, Redmond, Ramirez and Deulofeu don't play - which is quite conceivable - then you're in trouble. Lenihan has only played two Championship games for Hull, so he's hardly going to displace Elmohamaddy or Robertson at a higher level.
In a best case scenario, this is a great team, but I think you probably need more balance and a Plan B that isn't simply wildcarding.

          1. Nabs Kebabs
            • 14 Years
            9 years, 4 months ago

Valencia has a spot to lose. I'm hoping he can hold on to it for a couple of months.

Gabriel is there if went sign a CB. Otherwise he will be a nailed 5.0
Redmond also has a spot to lose imo but it is conceivable he loses it fairly early.

            Ramirez is nailed.

Deleufeu I feel would be first choice on a wing. His competition is Mirallas and Lennon. 2/3 will start.

Lenihan unfortunately wont start. B.Smith might though, Charlie Daniels hasnt been in the squad for the last games and Smith has started both. Francis is being used as a CB so Smith could potentially even play RB if Daniels is nailed at LB. So let's pretend he is Smith.

My team is more risky cos of the personell. I could easily have Shaw, Williams and Townend and all of a sudden its quite safe. I have decided that if it all goes tits up, the WC is there for that reason but I love the potential of my side. The main point of my post is that Kun/Ibra/Kane doesn't ruin a side.

There is always gonna be exceptional value to be found somewhere. Cheap gk/def is always a safe bet. I have still managed a big hitting def. I see the mids as where the real value is. Ramirez nailed in the hole for Boro, they won't score loads but he will be involved in about 50% i reckon, he single handedly won them promotion last season. Redmond playing up front @6m, he suits Puels system and has a spot to lose imo. Deulofeu is fpl whenever he plays. Look at his fpl history and compare points with minutes played.

Well, I see your point, but I had that in mind.
        1) KDB may not be ready for GW1 as he came in late after euros.
        2) Hard for me to see that either Sané or Nolito will start GW1.
        3) Silva is better than Sterling, so I think he's pretty nailed for GW1. Or is it just me?

It's not worth it for keepers. Get ones who get save points. Clean sheets a bonus.

You could get away with it without carrying that front line but you've got the two big boys and you need to make cuts somewhere. Keeper is an obvious one.

10M on keepers because on paper they rotate well is madness.

West Ham have no Cresswell and Antonio continues to leave gaps - avoid Adrian, I reckon. I agree with The Hindu Monkey - Foster and Heaton is fine. Also, putting all your eggs in the rotation basket doesn't account for the random, unexpected results, like West Ham beating Arsenal on the opening day last year, or Villa beating them in GW1 the season before that. No one could predict Mahrez hitting double figures the first 3 weeks of last season, or Redmond and Hoolihan doing likewise for Norwich in GW2. Don't get too bogged down with seemingly good rotations basically ...

    Using Draft System with friends,
    Who would you pick:
Townsend, Khazri, Ibe, Chamberlain, Walcott, Touré, Lallana, Henderson, Wijnaldum?

#AFC interested in signing Valencia defender Mustafi. No bid yet + others inc #CFC keen. Also want a striker but not pursuing Mahrez/Draxler

Is Terry nailed and if so for how long do you reckon?

I can squeeze in Hazard if I downgrade Azpi to Terry and Coleman to Taylor.

    Worth it?
