Pre-Season

After struggling with injury in his debut season for Man United, the stage seemed set for Luke Shaw to establish himself as a regular under Louis van Gaal last time around.

Limited to just 15 starts in 2014/15 after arriving from Southampton for around £30m, the left-back had finally proven his fitness in time for the start of the previous campaign.

Handed a spot in the Dutchman’s XI, Shaw’s raids down the left were a feature of the Red Devils’ first five league matches and earned him 27 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points, courtesy of an assist, three clean sheets and four bonus points.

A broken leg sustained against PSV in mid-September brought an end to that early promise and sidelined Shaw for the rest of the season.

Having averaged 5.4 points per appearance, it was a case of “what could have been” for the former Saint, as United proceeded to rack up 18 clean sheets and concede just 35 times.

The Prospects

Encouragingly, Shaw – who is priced at 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) – has stepped up his injury recovery over the summer period and started all four of United’s pre-season friendlies.

A strong performance in last night’s draw with Everton had the local press purring and his return to fitness has been duly noted by FPL managers, with over 16% snapping up the full-back, making him the seventh most popular defender on the market.

Although this will be Shaw’s fifth year in the top-flight, the youngster has only managed one full season so far – his breakthrough campaign for Southampton in 2013/14.

The left-back managed just two assists across 35 appearances that term, with a total of 123 points not overly convincing.

Delving into the underlying data for that season shows just why United were keen to splash the cash the following summer.

Shaw’s forages forward to join in the Saints’ attacks saw him ranked third amongst defenders for touches in the final third, whilst only Seamus Coleman made more successful dribbles (64 to 56).

His delivery from out wide also caught the eye. Shaw sat second for both crosses and successful crosses from the back and was placed fifth when it came to key passes, with 33.

In terms of goal threat, the numbers are again very encouraging. Although he failed to score with any of his 24 attempts, Shaw’s total of ten shots on target was bettered by only three other defenders.

Should he steer clear of injury, then, there’s cause for optimism that Shaw could play a significant part in the Fantasy season ahead, offering real potential for points at both ends of the pitch.

Certainly, we can expect him to be handed greater license to forage forward under Mourinho as United move away from Van Gaal’s possession-based approach.

When assessing United’s defence, it would be remiss to ignore the form of Antonio Valencia – identically priced at 5.5, he provided three assists in the recent win over Galatasaray.

It’s no secret, though, that Mourinho was a big fan of Shaw and attempted to sign him for Chelsea prior to the defender’s Old Trafford switch. Arguably, that makes the left-back berth the more secure option, with Matteo Darmian pushing Valencia for minutes on the opposite flank.

Really not convinced by mahrez.... I feel like people are putting him in partly because of that opening fixture. If their first game was away at Southampton I think he'd be half as popular

Am I wrong? Is it a short term fix or longer term? I just really can't see him being a success this season - Sanchez and payet will be in my midfield once they're fully ready and that probably means no mahrez for me

Great first game to assess. Top player in a team that hasn't changed that much. Scores assists and gets bps. Got well over 200 points last season..can always swap to payet when he's back...all for 9.5 absolute bargain

Agree with you think people are gambling on a big score week one without looking long term. If he gets 2 points against Hull it is almost a priority transfer that forces your hand. I will likely go without and hope that is the case against Hull and hopefully be able to save a transfer

Not to mention his statistical per-game performance in the second half of the season was worse than the first half:

fewer goals, assists, box touches, shots, accuracy, conversion, chances created..

I'm likely starting with Mahrez because Hull are in SUCH shambles, but I also have Leicester finishing outside the top 6 this season so it's definitely short-term ownership for me unless he goes on a run.

Don't see Azpi in THAT many teams, any reason why? As a Chelsea fan, he's been nailed from the start and I think he's worth the £6m, biased?

Especially given I'll be WC'ing come international break, can quite easily see a CS come MNF if WH fail to sign a striker. Other two games, again, quite possible of CS'.

I have 16.5m for one striker and one midfielder.
Do I go as I planned: Townsend and Vardy, or swap them and go Hazard and any 6.5m? The latter makes far more sense, right? But a front line of Gray, Aguero and a 6.5m seems far too weak.

Strong team, maybe use the 1.0 and upgrade Foster? A WBA double up is risky and Chelsea could be great defensively this year with Italian tactics, Courtois could be a great option to just leave in goal.

It's good because no one in my league is likely to do this, so if Sanchez or Kane are flying, they have no chance of getting them. That's why I like having Hazard and Vardy as a midfielder and forward as I'm able to get anyone I want in those positions if need be.

As the season draws near I'm sure we will become more conservative with our picks. Nothing worse than having a few too many players 'seemingly nailed on' only to find yourself struggling with rotation/injuries in the opening weeks.

If I can help it, I'd like to think I wouldn't need to use an early WC for the above reasons.

Yup. That last evening made my team much better last season when I decided having Aguero and Walcott in GW1 was just to much of a risk. I tinkered a bit and ended up with Mahrez coming in to compliment Aguero. It worked out OK

Its probably the last thought that should go into our mind when we finalise the team on deadline. Are they all nailed on?

See, I stupidly forgot to transfer Olssen (4m) out of my team last season because I was tinkering too much on the final day. Its these sorts of guys that really stuff you up because it immediately wastes a transfer. Nothing worse than wasting your first 2 or 3 transfers because you were too stupid not to pick properly nailed on players. Those who had Walcott all felt like fools in those early weeks.

The thing is I was sure I transferred him out of my team only to discover to my horror that I hadn't once the game updated.

Of course he wasn't the only issue. Got sucked into the Walcott madness as well 🙁 There are a few players like that popping up in RMT's at the moment.

So long as that risk is pretty much guaranteed to start the opening few weeks I agree. A 50/50 is too risky imo.

GW1 and GW3 fixtures are fantastic. Not too sure on Shaw's first 2 from a defensive point of view in all honesty. Yep, I wouldn't bench Shaw - but GW2 I can just bench VvD for Friend.

I decided to experiment with a top-heavy team, and I don't think it looks too bad. Thoughts?

    Foster-Jakupovic
    VVD - PvA - Pieters - Friend - Mee
    Hazard - Deulofeu - Fischer - Gradel - Capoue
    Aguero - Ibrahimovic - Kane

I didn't expect to be able to afford a big hitter in the midfield for example.

The Midfield is light, of course. But you have a lot of value picks in there. It could be genius.
The problem is lack of flexibility. If you want to jump on a 7.5m Midfield bandwagon, you would need two transfers.

      1. Pierce34
        • 10 Years

Thanks, the midfield thing is probably not a big deal - e.g. I could have Mahrez/Martial instead of Hazard, and Bolasie instead of Deulofeu and then getting a 7.5 becomes feasible.

      I like it I think.

But you will not find a 4 million reliable defender. You could shave half a million off of Shaw, Morgan or Stones and pump that up to a 4.5 defender and keep the concept?

Francis at 4.5 in for him and then the new 4.5 defender is Fernandez from Swansea
